I'd give this place 2 stars but it technically is the best sushi restaurant in town since it's probably the only one in downtown Birmingham. I'd strongly advise driving out a few miles to Noble Fish or anywhere else instead of eating here though. Recently starting work in Birmingham, I've been checking out local restaurants for lunch. When I saw that this place had lunch specials, I was expecting $7-8 options, not $10-12. I was hungry so I ordered a bulgogi lunch and Crunch Crunch roll. The portions were definitely underwhelming and the food did not taste exceptional. The decorations in the restaurant make it seem very authentic; unfortunately, the taste did not match up. If you really want sushi and are downtown, this is probably your only option. However, I strongly recommend checking out other places such as Noble Fish. read more

This is my absolute favorite Sushi place! I'm always surprised that it's not busier. The staff is friendly and the food is fantastic. I personally recommend the Lion King Roll, The Firecracker Roll, and the Spartan Roll. My one issue with this place before was the price was too high to go regularly but the last time I went they had dropped the prices considerably, I absolutely give this place my highest recommendation. read more

Came here with the family after heading to the movie theater nearby and it didn't disappoint! The staple cucumber rolls and spicy tuna rolls were fresh tasting and nicely presented. Meals were a good size. Lots of Japanese and Korean options on the menu in addition to the sushi, including bibimbap. I ordered the tofu glass noodles (jap chae, basically) and they were good and not greasy like some other places I've had it at. The kids ranked it highly as well - the 8 year old 5 stars and the 4 year old "ten hundred" stars. Staff were attentive and returned to our table frequently to refill our waters and make sure we were happy with our food. Would definitely come back! read more

First a Disclaimer... Neither me or my husband eat fish so this review is only for their Vegetarian variety! Cant comment on the sushi :) Now... This place is a delight for vegetarian sushi lovers!!!! 24 veggie rolls ... 25, when you count the Tempura sweet potato roll, which is not listed under vegetarian (but is to die for!) I have not seen so much variety in veggie rolls at any restaurant!!! Trust me me and my husband have been to so many places in search of good veggie-sushi!!! We tried three of their rolls: Spinach Veggie roll, Jalapeno roll and the Sweet Potato tempura roll.... all three absolutely spot on!!! Cant wait to try the rest of the rolls!!! They also have a good choice of appetizers and entrees for vegetarians which we would love to try. The service seemed a tad bit slow and our server came to our table with ice water which we didn't want, after she got us our water no ice, we ordered our food... she never asked if we wanted any drinks. After we got our food, no one checked on us or asked if we wanted anything else or told us about dessert choices! We even had to wave with both hands to get a servers attention for our check!!! and that took 10 minutes!!! And it was not like the place was packed.. we went in on a Sunday for lunch, there were hardly 4 tables occupied. Also the prices seemed a bit high specially for the vegetarian rolls. I've loved this restaurant for years and agree with their claim of best sushi in town. However I received a spring roll today that had a huge chunk of glass in it. I bit down and spit out this 1 inch x 1 inch chunk of glass. Will include pictures. I will be reporting this to e city of Birmingham as well as the health department. 3 reasons that turned us off from Birmingham Sushi Cafe: 1. Cultural insensitivity- even though its an ethnic restaurant, we faced racial bias. We had a reservation at 7.30 pm and reached there at 7.29 pm. There were two Caucasian groups who came after us and they had no reservations. We were asked to move to the entrance place (with arrogance) and it was cold there. The other 2 groups were not asked to do so even though they waited inside the warm restaurant. Secondly, both the groups were seated before us. 2. Make sure you ask for good wasabi- We ordered 3 Bibimbap's + Glass noodles+ Gyoza + 5 plates of sushi rolls between 4 adults and 1 kid. The sushi came with a tiny bit of sub-standard wasabi (non-pungent & artificially-colored) & a few pieces of ginger. When we mentioned about the wasabi to the server, the manager (she said her dad owned the place) got us a tiny quantity of a better tasting wasabi and angrily said that she will charge us if we want more. Really? A pinch of wasabi doesn't suffice 4 adults and a teenager when we would want to enjoy 5 different kinds of sushi rolls. When calmly discussed, the manager raised her voice and said in Birmingham the white folks left it anyways as they don't know how to use/ nor like the taste (another generalization & cultural inappropriateness). We should have let the restaurant know in advance about the wasabi. It was our first visit there and we had no idea nor was it mentioned on the menu nor by the waiter about the wasabi. 3.Payment- from my knowledge, auto-gratuity is added when you have a party of 6-8 people at 18% at most places. With 4 adults and a kid, they charged us with 20% gratuity. It pinched to pay that after experiences 2 episodes of cultural discrimination. I write in the hope that if the owners of the restaurant read this, they do not repeat such behavior with any other ethnic groups. For the consumer, to be aware that even though the place belongs to a person of color, at times the restaurant can be insensitive. This is my first review on yelp. Sushi Cafe has great food that tastes super fresh! It's a go-to place for a lot of Birmingham natives, so you know it's pretty consistent quality. One of the classics is the shrimp tempura roll, and it's a huge behemoth that you wouldn't really expect - especially if you've gotten shrimp tempura rolls at other places. Their specialty rolls always look super cool, but it sucks that they don't have pictures of them to help you with the selection. As a result, all the food I get from here is pretty conservative. That said, the nigiri was great. The rice to fish ratio was excellent. What sucked was the price. However, considering the cafe is situated on prime Birmingham real estate, it makes sense. Four pieces of nigiri made me bill come out to a little over 11 bucks. I got salmon, cajun albacore tuna, inari and roe. The Cajun Albacore Tuna was new to me, and the marinade has a sour taste to it. It wasn't bad, but personally, I prefer just the taste of fresh fish. In term of architecture, the place is very clean! I love how mostly all of their seating is booths, which is awesome for your typical parties of 4. They also have outdoor seating, which is nice in the summer. Service here isn't top-notch, as noted by other yelpers, so expect something along the lines of a Chinese restaurant. However, based on purely the sushi, there's nothing to bang on this place for! read more

My favorite restaurant in Downtown Birmingham! The bibimbap is absolutely delectable, the best part is that it comes in a hot stone bowl so it's still cooking when it is served to you. I usually get chicken or tofu bibimbap, but either way it is just as amazing. The sriracha sauce on the side is the finishing touch for this dish. I am also a huge sushi feign. Therefore, I have tried many rolls here and my favorite that keeps me coming back is the ninja roll. It's basically a california roll with tuna and salmon draped on top with none other than the best spicy mayo doused all over it. I went here on a recommendation from a friend, inside is very modern down to ikea tea mugs. Reading the other reviews on this place, I expected poor waiter service. Which in part was correct, as much as it appears upscale to have the waiter sparingly visit the table, it really hurts the level of service. My tea was never refilled and was served to me in a mug with a bag. For a sushi establishment I'd like to see fresh green tea or at the very least ditch the bag. Onto the sushi, I found the quality to be very good and the fish was very fresh. I had the "strawberry roll" that was fantastic combination of sweet, spicy and savory. A first for me. This cafe also serves Kobe beef, which is also top notch. They fit very well with other higher end eateries in Old Birmingham. I would come visit this place again if I was traveling out that way again. The chefs are all Japanese and produce a quality product. Surprisingly there isn't a jar for them which is really were the tip should go. Perhaps sticking to the custom of not requiring it. My favorite sushi place in this area. read more

I for the most part agree with the other 3 reviews....however, my service here blew. It blew hard. Then it blew harder. I got seated and saw other tables come strolling in and I just knew it was going to be one of those "don't drink all your water because you will be fucked if you want more" nights. However, I am willing to overlook this because I am pretty sure they were unprepared for how busy a new place would be a on a cold thursday nite. When my friend joined me she tried to shoot the shit, I said, "Don't talk because when the waitress comes we need to have our entire order ready" 15 minutes later my friend got her water. 10 minutes later our full order was taken. That sucked because we felt so rushed to have our order ready we couldn't really review and take our time exploring a new place. Now on the the important part, after my rant-the FOOD. Granted, our veggie tempura appetizer came when we were almost done with our sushi, it was good, just as tempura always is. We started with 2 house salads with the ginger dressing and this was one of the more impressive basic house salads I have had at a sushi place...aside from the fresh strawberries in it, it was large and fresh and had an array of greens instead of a handful of iceberg out of the bag. The fish was fresh and flavorful and the rolls were average size...I have had rolls with a little more fish in them before. However, I was satisfied. They also offer a brown rice option, which I would have liked BUT I knew on a night like this that was asking for trouble. Someone else mentioned the Firecracker roll....it was FANTASTIC(keep your water glass full) and I cannot wait to go back and have it again. It's pricy but filling and spicy-crab tastic. I also loved the soft-shell crab roll...the basics were done as expected-tuna roll, philly roll, etc. I am looking forward to going back with someone that is more into the 'raw fish' sushi than the super american-ized rolls. I will for sure go back, and hopefully they will have had their wings under them at that point to be properly staffed and organized, should it get busy. I was glad I wasn't in a hurry and with a friend whose company I enjoyed AND I got good food, eventhou I had to wait...otherwise it would have been one miserable experience. It's a shame, and I'm disappointed to say I can't give it a good review (even though the food is great) due to the service & attitude of the owner. It's a bummer that it is now the only option for sushi in downtown Birmingham. I've dined here numerous times in the past 5 years (used to frequent weekly for lunch when I worked downtown Birmingham). Service has always been an issue, we've never seen the same server working there twice, we always have to seek out & ask servers for refills on drinks (even water) and the servers seem genuinely scared of the owner. My most recent visit was my last. They are overpriced for what they give you (even though the quality, presentation & flavor of the food are all great). Very small amounts of fish in the sushi. My husband ordered the BiBimBap with beef and he asked for extra beef in it (which he does at most Korean restaurants), willing to pay the extra charge. When it arrived it MAYBE had 1-2 oz. of meat in it. The server double checked and assured us that the chef put extra beef in it. We then asked for more, again willing to pay the extra charge for it. The owner refused to give us any extra beef... and then proceeded to argue with us about the dish and what it's "supposed" to be (focus on rice & veggies). We understand that, but still wanted more meat. She then insisted that we order a whole other dinner of Bulgogi. Bottom line is that the owner needs a serious attitude adjustment and a crash course on how to properly provide cheerful customer service as well as train (& treat employees) correctly so that she can actually keep a consistent staff. read more

Okay so the food is still okay. But today they sorta pissed me off and I witnessed another upset customer... They had 2 tickets today at lunch, one was a carry out the other was my dad and I. I ordered a "lunch box" with 3 rolls and soup, my dad ordered 2 rolls and soup. His tea had a tea bag dangling on it - really? They can't brew a pot of tea? Sigh. Anyway, I asked if I could have the 3 rolls (as ordered it was cucumber, cucumber/avocado, and asparagus) be all the same (3 avocado rolls...which was CHEAPER than the ones in the box according to the menu) instead. Originally I was told yes, however the young waiter came back and told me that the chef couldn't substitute. I could understand if they were busy or if I wanted a more expensive roll in my box, but it was a cheaper roll and we were the ONLY people in the restaurant. Fail. THEN the carry out order person came in. She had a huge order which they placed all on one tray. She said, " these are going to different places in my office, can you separate them please?". They looked at her like she was nuts. She called her office and you could tell she was agitated. When she got off the phone, she asked again if they would please separate the rolls. They said no. Very good sushi at reasonable prices, in downtown Birmingham. This spot isn't fancy - you don't take a first date here to impress them. But, once you've gone out a couple times and have things sealed down, this would be a great choice for a more casual weekday date. :) The menu has everything you'd expect and want a standard sushi joint to have - from specialty rolls to the traditional, to sashimi and nigiri, and all the non-raw options in between. We sampled a few rolls along with an appetizer of potstickers, and it was all very good. Wasn't very crowded when we were there, so our server was able to be very attentive to us. Went here with Brian B. and Dave S. before going to Laser Quest (review for LQ upcoming. You're pretty excited about that, I can tell). The service here was pretty good. The place was empty on Christmas Eve Eve so that might explain it. Sushi here was pretty average. It was good, don't get me wrong. But it's really hard to stand out as a sushi restaurant. Sushi is like burgers. It's hard to find some truly stand-out ones. I don't like the fact that there is not fountain soda. Just canned.
