Called Tommy and he was able to come that day (actually, within 90 minutes as he was near my home in Santa Clara) to diagnose why our GE microwave was working in all respects (clock, turntable, vent) except it was not heating(!!). Having watched some videos on YT I was thinking it was the Thermo Fuse (switch?) or High Voltage diode (because our housekeeper every so often short circuits our microwave by applying cleaner directly to the surface rather than to the rag). Tommy took off the back, tested the magnetron and diagnosed it was the cause of failure. He took the time to point out the thermal fuses and high voltage diode (I could see it was not visibly burned) and explained why it was unlikely my housekeeper was at fault. The microwave is 10yrs old and (confirming what I'd read online) Tommy said the most likely cause is simple wear and tear. While the repairs I was hoping to make are cheap, the magnetron replacement part (again as I confirmed from others online earlier) is not. Slightly cheaper than a new GE microwave, but we had actually ordered a new GE on sale, so we stuck with that. Being green people at heart we wanted to repair if possible, but at 10yrs old there was no guarantee something else might not go bad. I called another highly rated repair biz. The owners wife gave me a hard time because I wanted a couple minutes of the tech's time to assess if it was worth fixing. Tommy returned my call promptly, politely listened to my concerns, gave me a ballpark estimate I found reasonable. Excellent repair for my LG refrigerator water line! No water & no ice was a problem. Other technician before did not know the root cause and recommended a wrong fix. This guy replaced a badly rusted component at the rear bottom side of the component. The water runs fine now. He put a safety mat underneath the refrigerator during the fix to protect the floor. It's not often that you are at the mercy of a repair person (appliance, car, roof- whatever) and you feel 100% confident that there was not one thing that they could have done to improve your experience. But yesterday it happened to me! We woke up yesterday morning to a cool freezer drawer and thawing food. We thought maybe it hadn't been closed all the way but a few hours later and it was still no good. I called Tommy and left a message. Less than 10 minutes later he called back and I told him my problem. He asked if I was home now and he was at my house 15 minutes after I said "yes!". Luckily it was not the more expensive repair ($700-$800 for a compressor) but the easier, less expensive one (relay and starter, $120 for parts and service) and we were cooling again less than an hour after I left the message! He even made us throw away some of the food he thought would no longer be good which I appreciate since I really hate to waste food so he probably saved me and my family some illnesses. The panel on my microwave/oven died. I was referred to another company (Ace Appliance), who (mis)diagnosed the problem over the phone and proposed a 1000$ repair. I don't trust companies who offer expensive solutions over the phone. They wanted over 100$ to come do a proper diagnosis. Thanks to Tommy for fixing my refrigerator. My KitchenAid was having a problem with the freezer getting too cold and freezing everything on the fridge side. Tommy came out and tried to do some adjustments and resets to see if that would fix it and same me money from having to buy parts. He mentioned that if it happened again he'd come out and only charge me for the parts. That was very nice of him to offer that since most repair guys go to straight to the parts first. I also mentioned to Tommy that I found him on yelp so I got my 10% discount. After several days the problem came back and so Tommy went ahead and ordered to parts. It took 4-5 days to get the part but he came and installed and didn't charge me labor again, as promised. I would recommend Tommy's repair to anyone.
