We made reservations on January 2nd, forgetting that DC is empty over the holidays. But any other time, even on a Tuesday, this place would be packed more than it already was, deservedly! So, reservations recommended. The place is warm and cozy. We were seated in the back room, which was quiet and the lighting was perfect for being bright enough to read the menu but not too bright that I could see what was in everyone else's plates on other tables. The wait staff were very attentive and shared tables (so someone was always making sure we were taken care of). One gentleman helped us pronounce the menu items with patience. Kudos to him for reinforcing our wanting to learn! We had the Kichir-e-Quroot (eggplant) special and Afghania Nakhoud Chalou, as well as the best side dish, Qabuli Rice (with carrots and raisins). Husband ordered beer and I had cardamom green tea (so good). To wrap up the evening, I had the sheer birinj rice pudding with pistachios on top. Nice and cold, too! Came on a Friday for lunch, it was not too crowded and service was very good. We've been to here a few times and this place is definitely a hidden gem for people who love Afghan style meal. Each dishes have great flavors and spices. I usually get their portobello mushroom with beans and rice rather than meat, all is so flavorful with great spices as well. Their appetizer dumplings are delicious too. I came here for dinner two weekends ago and had a really enjoyable time. I can't remember our server's name, but she was great (she had long cute nails and tattoos). I couldn't decide between two wines so she brought me a taste of both to decide. She explained and answered all our questions regarding dishes and was real attentive. She gave good suggestions. We started with the spicy beef dumplings. Very yummy with a nice spice. Then I got the saffron chicken and my boyfriend got one the lamb chop meals. We both really enjoyed our meals! I am not a fan of lamb, but I tasted my boyfriend's dish and the lamb was one of the best I've ever tasted. It was so good I almost stole a piece from him. With a cool soundtrack gently playing, we ordered a bottle of red and settled in for another family-style meal together. We ordered an appetizer plate to share plus two mains. Our server quickly brought out a warm bread basket with four chutney dipping sauces...avocado, cilantro and yogurt | mango | fresh herb | red chili. The consensus winners at our table were the avocado version and the fresh herb version. The mango version was a bit too sweet for our savory palates and the red chili was pretty spicy on the tongue. The hot mazza assortment appetizer platter was filled with warm, soft spreads including spiced beef dumplings, roasted butternut squash, roasted eggplant and leek dumplings. Each had a unique spice / flavor profile and made for terrific bites. For the first main, we had the beef tenderloin and lamb chop platter. The meats were outstanding, simply grilled to perfection. Sometimes lamb chops can be a bit gamey...no these! For the last main, we tried the classic meat tosh payra consisting of beef dumplings simmered in a stew of savory lentils, chickpeas, dill and yogurt. New favorite restaurant in DC?! The food was absolutely delicious. Every bite was flavorful and comforting; really robust, complex flavors but also homey...like food your grandmother would prepare. If this is Afghan food then I might also have a new favorite cuisine...especially for the winter. I ordered the vegetarian/vegan sampler (similar to qabuli veg platter) and every dish was perfect. It came with chickpeas, greens, squash, eggplant, daal, okra, and qabuli rice. Nothing was heavy but I definitely left satisfied. They also put a vegan yogurt sauce on the side as I opted for dairy free. The biggest surprise was the complimentary bread & sauces! I want to bottle that mango chutney and put it on everything. If I could give this place a 10/5 I would. This is legitimately one of my top 5 favorite restaurants EVER! Not just in DC...... EVER!!!! You might think I'm being overly dramatic, but I have been here twice and both times the servers were so attentive and helpful with selecting dishes. This last time our sever even gave us a free desert! The prices are incredibly reasonable for DC and for the quality of the food. The space is cozy and inviting and a perfect place for a special occasion. I suggest getting the taste of Aracosia, you get to taste all of their staple dishes and it comes with the dumplings (which are all perfectly spiced). Just had dinner at Bistro Aracosia and tried Afghan food for the first time! Wonderful experience. Right when you walk in, the ambiance is homey yet elegant and you can tell that the decor is important to the culture. I loved the little poem on the front of the Menu as well, what a sweet touch. My boyfriend and I ordered an appetizer for the 3 dumplings (spicy beef, leek & scallion, and pumpkin) and then ordered the lamb tenderloin and the Frenched Lamb rack. All of the dishes were delicious and had great balance of flavors. We also enjoyed the bread they brought to the table with the four sauces. Each sauce had a distinct flavor, but our favorite was the mango one. I left feeling extremely full and wasn't able to completely eat all of my rice because I was so full -which is great. At first I thought the prices were slightly higher than other places but the portions match the price. Entrees are 25-35 each but they are well worth it! Bistro Aracosia is a really good restaurant to go to - Afghan food is a cuisine I have always wanted to try and this place does it very nicely. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is surprisingly modern and eclectic. There are some nice pieces of art on the walls and the lighting is good. It is clean and modern. The menu is very large and there is a heavy vegetarian presence on it. So it is easy to go here with a crowd of people. We started with a dumpling sampler that was very good. It came with 4 different sauces - mint-yogurt, spicier sauces too. The dumplings were very good. My main was a type of chicken stew served on top of a bed of rice. Saffron Chicken. This course was very flavorful and the spices were strong and aromatic with a Middle Eastern flair of course. I had ordered an upgrade to tabouleh rice, which the waiter forgot, but when I asked, he brought it to me and he did not charge me. So that was quite nice. My spouse had Chicken Aracosian as his main dish and he liked it very much. His chicken, like mine, was presented like a thick stew on top of a bed or rice. The chicken was in a spicy tomato sauce and also had eggplant and garam masala. Our friend had a vegetarian dish of spicy risotto with eggplant and butternut squash. This, in reality, was 3 different dishes placed on her plate. The risotto was not remarkable but the butternut squash was out of this world. Bistro Aracosia is not a place you can go often. The flavors are very strong and the spices are used liberally. So, it is NOT that the food is not great, it is just very strong and not something that I would want every day. Aziz was our server. He was friendly. However, he had the entire room to himself and was VERY busy. So, we relied heavily on the wait assistant who brought the drinks, etc. Plus he forgot a few things that we requested. One thing I did not like is how he upsold us on some items. One of us asked for hot tea and the waiter offered ONLY the most expensive tea available (there were in fact other hot teas that were cheaper). Also, we mentioned that we wanted a certain type of dumpling but there were only 4 in the service; with 3 of us, that did not work. So, he suggested the sampler dumpling platter which we suggested. However, when delivered, we received both the sampler dumpling platter AND the platter that we had originally talked about. These things were not bad enough to sour my opinion on Bistro Aracosia. So I recommend that you try this restaurant but just keep strict control over what you order. read more

I was persuaded to try some dumplings with mixed greens in a lentil-based stew, which was quite layered in flavor. However, the bread and chutneys they brought were also tasty, and the spiciest one definitely enhanced my dumplings. Some fried dough appetizers were predictably delicious. The level of service and atmosphere of being in Palisades is particularly valuable now, as is being in a safe, quiet part of the city with easy parking. Stopped by here last night for takeout. They are currently running a takeout special that is a $75 dinner for two which includes an appetizer, entree, side, and dessert per person and a bottle of wine to share. For the quality of food that Bistro Aracosia offers, this was a great deal! My boyfriend and I ordered the mantu (beef dumplings) and the leek dumplings (my personal favorite) for our appetizers. These are our favorites, but I've also heard their turnovers are delicious! For the entree, we ordered the Chicken Karahi and Chicken Aracosian since we were both in the mood for tomato based sauces. Both were absolutely delicious, but I recommend the Chicken Aracosian if you're in the mood for something with more heavy seasoning. For our sides, we ordered the potato and also the eggplant which were both delicious! For dessert, I ordered the rice pudding and he ordered the pudding which were both spectacular. (I also highly recommend their cakes--they are soft, fluffy, and some of the best cakes I've ever had in my life!) Overall, I absolutely LOVE Bistro Aracosia--it may be my favorite restaurant in the city. We started with the veggie dumplings which were delicate and delicious, more like tacos. Two of us had a special salmon dish and two had different veggie dishes. I tasted the salmon, which was perfectly grilled with a delicate sauce. And my veggie main dish was yummy. Sorry but I can't recall the name of it. At some point it was mentioned to the servers that two of us were celebrating a birthday. Lo and behold they brought out two different custard desserts on plates decorated with a bold happy birthday. So thoughtful of them. Our party was the last in the restaurant and nobody said anything or hurried us along. The whole experience was awesome. We had eaten there before but not since COVID. So it was our fourth anniversary and we were looking for a nice restaurant that would wow us and this place certainly delivered. For years now I have been telling my wife about this one sweet and salty Afghan dish called Quabili Pulau which is pretty much lamb over a bed of basmati rice carrots and raisins. She found this place through a friend and surprised me with it, we were both so excited to try the dish and for good reason, it was amazing! Along with that we tried the assortment or Mazza of dumplings as well as grilled meats which were perfect to dip in their four chutneys - each of which were unique and made fresh in house. They knew it was our anniversary so they went above in beyond to make it special, not only letting us sample the sambosas which was a first for me - and may have been my favorite the way the sweetness of the powdered sugar crunchy outside complimented the savory juicy beef and lentil filling - but they also brought us out a cake with a candle to properly celebrate! Neither of us are big cake fans typically and Sammy doesn't like cardamom but this was no ordinary cake, it was spectacular! It was rich in flavors that combined perfectly and soaked in a milky sauce that made it dense, leaving my wife talking about it all night. The menu is quite extensive with both meat and non-meat alternatives, plus a reasonable beer list (we did not look carefully at the wines. It was $140 for 2 people and that's with only 1 glass of wine. We ordered a salad , the butternut squash appetizer, salmon, chicken kabob, and the rice pudding. The entrees come with different vegetables and a small amount of rice. The other couple ordered the rose water ice cream which was much better than the rice pudding. I know the name on the dinner menu was different but I cannot remember for the life of me. It was beyond amazing and full of flavors. The bread is served with four dipping options - all yummy though one is very spicy/hot - which we were warned about! The dumplings are fresh and the spices really make the flavor come live. We've been meaning to come here for forever, but then the pandemic hit and it seemed hard to get carry out from a place you didn't already know what you liked from. We finally did it for my wife's birthday and we were ecstatic with the results. The food was great across the board--although a bit pricey for the portions, but we kind of expected that. We thought we hugely over-ordered to be able to try everything, but wound up only having mildly over-ordered. The Hot Mazza Assortment and Beef Tenderloin blew us away. Our favorite by far was the Hot Mazza Assortment (beef dumplings, leek dumplings, roasted butternut squash and roasted eggplant). It was all amazing and the biggest thing I would change next time would be to get two or more orders. It was big enough to share between two people, but not enormous and I might want it to be my appetizer. My wife got the Bistro Signature Lamb Chops & Beef Tenderloin. The beef tenderloin was simply amazing. It was tender, but still had great texture and was seasoned perfectly. We could have had 3x as much and would have gladly eaten it. The lamb chops were also good, but my wife--who loves lamb--preferred the beef to the lamb. I also preferred the beef to the lamb, but I don't normally love lamb and still really, really liked the lamb chops. They weren't at all fatty and were instead just tender without falling apart and delicious. We got a mix of chicken kabobs, beef tenderloin and a beef bistro burger for the kids and I. The chicken kabobs were good, but not as good as the beef tenderloin, but the kids loved the chicken, so that's what they ate. The beef bistro burger was supposed to be for my burger-loving son, but he wound up not liking the seasoning and wouldn't eat it. I ate it and really enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as the beef tenderloin or the hot mazza. Next time, we'll get more chicken kabob for the kids and skip the burger. We also got an order of pumpkin dumplings at the last minute because people talked about it. They were good, but a bit too sweet and we enjoyed the beef and leek dumplings more. Everything came with a potato curry over rice on the side that was simply amazing. Also the qabuli (looks like shredded carrot with raisins) which came with a few things was also a great side. The sauces were amazing as well, but I wish I had done more experimenting with the different things and different sauces. To round out the birthday experience we got three cocktails (Fig Fashioned, Spiced Pear, Cherry Bourbon Sour). The Fig Fashioned was easily our favorite, but the spiced pear was good--if a bit sweet, and the cherry bourbon sour wasn't bad either. It was nice to have a few decent mixed drinks for the first time during pandemic. We'll definitely be back. read more
