Fancy fancy!! I had an ever-changing party count for my reservation, which they were so delightfully accommodating of over the phone. I really appreciated that! I kept going back and forth about whether I wanted to meet at this location or the one in the Wharf. Because of parking and centrality, I decided on this one, which is a block away from Union Station. There's plenty of street parking that thankfully doesn't get crowded on a weeknight, so it was perfect. This location is connected to the Royal Sonestra, a lovely looking hotel. As expected from being both a French restaurant and connected to a fancy hotel, Bistro Du Jour is quite fancy itself!! The lighting really sets the mood. There's a fairly spacious bar and plenty of outdoor seating as well. I was able to get seated with the members of my party right at the reservation time... more than half of the party was present. I believe her name was Christina (that's what's on my receipt at least) -- she took wonderful care of our table the entire night. Started with water, then orders for drinks, appetizers, and entrees in a timely manner. I never had escargots so I HAD to get those. The garlic butter broth definitely dominated the flavor... so of course it was delicious and rich! Great first experience. And the baguette on the side was a nice bonus. I got the Coq Au Vin has my main entree. It was a braised chicken leg dish with a yummy broth, mashed potatoes and veggies. I finished it and was quite satisfied! I got a scoop of coconut sorbet to finish the dinner, and it was a refreshing end. I loved the attention to table etiquette, properly placing silverware in between courses. And Christina checked on us regularly for water refills and making sure everyone was OK. For a party of 12, this was beyond efficient. Everyone enjoyed their selections -- while I didn't get a cocktail, everyone loved what they got. Now, I did want a macaron, and that was the one small item that didn't arrive for me, but it was a minor setback that didn't come close to ruining the experience. I had dinner at Bistro du Jour this week with some colleagues, and I really enjoyed the meal. We shared a starter for the table - a special of the night: roasted duck croquettes with a fig sauce, that was very good. For my entree I had the Fluke en Papillote (with lemon, garlic, ginger, shiitake mushrooms, tomatoes, and fennel), which I thought was fantastic. The fish was perfectly cooked, and everything that came with it was delicious (that ginger? a surprising touch that I really enjoyed)! We also shared a couple of desserts for the table: a creme brulee and a mini tarte tatin. Both were good (although I'm more of a tarte tatin girl than a creme brulee girl)! I had a great glass of French sparkling white wine. The service was good, and the restaurant is nice - elegant, traditional but fun, comfortable. Overall, I really enjoyed the meal. Wow! Now this is a restaurant. Elegant decor, fine service, top notch food. From start to finish this was an amazing experience. My mom and I were looking for a nice dinner near our hotel the Bistro checked all the boxes. so we made a reservation. We were greeted and seated immediately. I have some mobility issues which the staff Tended to right away as if I was family. Mom ordered a gin and tonic and I had the manhattan; perfect. The manhattan was the best I've ever had. For appetizers we both had the escargot, it was served in a pot and was delicious. For main courses, mom had the Orzo Al'Homard and I had the Gnocchi Parisienne, both dishes were exceptional. For dessert I ordered the crepes Suzette. I had to take it away because I was so full, but I ate it the next day on the train back to New York and it was great. I would give this place a great however these two things - 1. We arrived like 5 minutes early, but they wouldn't seat us because they were transitioning from breakfast to brunch. Thought this was a little odd b/c the place wasn't busy. 2. Service/food output was a little slow. Maybe they are going with the French way of things? Servers were wonderful, but everything seemed to take a little longer than normal. Food and drinks were ah-mazing!! Like total *chef's kiss* to everything! The pastries were warm and so good. The croissant had a flaky crust and the inside was absolutely buttery goodness. My pain perdu was soo good. The blueberry compote - I could have eaten that on it's own! A "Little Paris" near the Hill with true French cooking is waiting for you. You must try "Vol-Au-Vent De Champignons" and of course, all their desserts! Five stars to the pastry chef! I was invited to BDJ for lunch by a client. My initial reaction was thay convenience was behind his selection of this restaurant located in the Royal Sonesta Hotel. I quickly realized thay their is much more to BDJ than one may assume. It is an extremely well run restaurant focused on typical French Bistro food. The service is excellent and very efficient. They clearly understand that their audience is working on or near Capitol Hill and need to make thr most of their lynch time meetings. Friendly servers, are hapotbti share solid recommendations, and i was delighted to have taken their advice. The Croque Madame was delicious, and perfectly executed. From thr bread to the judicious application of bechemal, it was the poster child of the perfect croquet. It was paired with a green salad tossed in a bright vinaigrette, the perfect foil for thr rich melted cheese, ham, bread, etc. Service was spot-on, and the room was bright yet subtly stylish. We visited for happy hour and got great service and food in a nice atmosphere. The place was pretty quiet on a Wednesday for happy hour, with only 3 other people at the bar, so it was easy to get seats. It got a little more lively over the next hour or so. If you've been to the Wharf location, this one is very different. If you enter from the street, you'll see the host stand and a pretty large dining room, but you won't see the bar -- it's tucked back behind the host stand, along with some lounge seating, which makes the bar space feel a bit more private. I liked it. The space is very pretty with gold, pink, and green colors. The happy hour menu is pretty large and well priced. We got the gougeres ($4 HH, $8 reg), burger americaine ($15 HH, $21 reg), Colette's Punch ($7 HH, $12 reg), red wine ($10 for 8 oz HH, unsure reg price), and Denizens Southside IPA ($6 HH, $9 reg). All of the food and drinks were solid. The gougeres came ~7 to an order and spot on for flavor and texture. They are a decent size, 2-3 bites each. The burger was ordered medium rare and cooked more like medium well, but this was understandable because it was a smash burger and the flavors were still great. It came with standard lettuce, tomato, pickle toppings as well as cheese. The included side of fries was also very good, with the right amounts of salt and crispiness. The punch was very tasty and other drinks were standard. Our bartender was JP and he did a good job with friendly service. It's a great addition to the neighborhood which otherwise has pretty mediocre restaurants. We'll be back. read more

This was a company dinner, so the menu was pre-set with many dishes to share at the table. All were very good, some excellent. Stand outs for me were the herbed toast (think crusty bread with escargot butter/herbs without the escargot), the bouillabaise-- fish, good sized shrimp/prawns with the heads on (so you know they had to be pretty fresh), mussels, in a spicy soup--more like a sauce in a shallow dish, with rouille and toast, and something like a soufflé with a gruyère sauce. They also offered French75 cocktails, which as it was a warm day were terrific, and a quite good red wine (not sure if it was the house red or something else--part of the sit down). I often hesitate to consider a restaurant that may be affiliated with a hotel, but this one I would go back to on purpose on my own with my DC. Service was fine--and it's not easy to deal with multiple tables of folks talking hard and also wanting another glass of something. If I had to be concise with the review I would go with something like: Delightful interior with an exquisite meal. I am sure that would be an accurate portrayal of this place that people would understand. This open a short while ago in the brand new Royal Sonesta located on Mass Ave a short walking distance from Union Station. I may sound redundant, but I am happy that there are now more option in the area to get a quality lunch at. To note, they are also amazing for happy hour which starts right as I am done with work...right across the street. My coworkers and I came here for a holiday lunch. We were able to review the menu before hand and select our meals according. We were able to request our drink, entree, and dessert. This made it so much easier on us so that we didn't have to peruse the menu and waste time in the restaurant. The only thing that we needed to do in house was select an appetizer off the menu if we wanted any. I did not get an appetizer, but there were many brought out to the table from my coworker's orders. The service here was impeccable. Once we were all settled and situated drinks came out. Each time one of the servers brought or removed something they would apologize in advance for reaching/setting items down. Of course, each time I would thank them and they would always be gracious. They addressed everyone at the table as sir or ma'am. The also made sure that if our drinks were low they were on top of it to ask if we wanted refills. This is by far the best service I have had at any restaurant in quite some time. Now for the food and drink. I had ordered a iced tea as my drink. The menu doesn't really give that much of a description as to what type of iced tea this is so you are led to believe that it is a regular iced tea. Sugar is on the table for your sweetening level or they office you a small shot sized pitcher of simple syrup to sweeten your tea with. When I finally sweetened my tea with the simple syrup I come to find out that it is a peach flavored iced tea. I'm not a huge fan of peach but I still drank the tea. If this is the only misstep, no part of the restaurant's, I can't gig them on that. For my entree, I went with the Burger Americaine. I know, leave it to me to get a burger at a French Bistro. But I wasn't feeling anything else on the menu as it was mushroom heavy and I didn't want to be that person that requested to have a key ingredient omitted from their dish. Even though it was a burger, it was one of the best burgers I have had. The double patty was seasoned perfectly, topped with American cheese, lettuce, onion, and pickle. My god, I still have thoughts on those pickles. They were amazing. I am not sure, but I think they are made in house and are quite nice. I wished I could have taken some of them home with me. There was so much flavor going on in this burger that before I knew it, it was gone. Pairing it with their fries was so good. The fries were what you would imagine fries to be. A nice crispy outer layer with all that potato goodness on the inside. And being a French bistro you have to dip them in mayo. Man, my mouth is watering all over again. For dessert I went with their Gateau Au Chocolat. The description the menu doesn't do it justice. Warm Varihana chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and a candied orange. What they should have written was a hug on a cold day. Think chocolate lava cake and you can wrap your head around this. With such a good first impression, I will definitely be keeping this on my short list for when I want to get lunch while at work. Maybe that will give me time to explore more of the menu and take in dinner one night before heading home. read more

Okay I promise I literally never come on here, but I felt compelled because our experience today was so odd. How do you completely run out of croissants? At a French cafe?? At 11:00 AM? We had brunch at 11:00 AM and they were out of: all croissants, all muffins, everything on the pastry menu except for (1) the cinnamon roll and (2&3) the chocolate chip and snickerdoodle cookies. But the weirdest part was that no one mentioned this? You'd think the dining experience may start with an update on what's not available, but our waitress and I had some extended banter about the banana bread and I ordered it before she told me they don't have it today. I then tried to order the Sandwich Au Petit Dejeuner and it was only then that she informed us they were completely out of croissants. Being out of stuff is generally fine, but my first instinct was that this French cafe should probably just bake more croissants. This all makes me think the bistro outsources its baking, which is disappointing, because then you end up in situations where you're out of all baked goods well before the brunch period has ended on a Sunday. Separately, the vibes were loud and chaotic. And the options for heat while dining were to (1) sit directly beneath a heater set to one million degrees, or (2) freeze. read more

We were really happy to find this newly opened place right around the corner from our hotel. They have a nice cocktail list in addition to a list of wines by the glass and bottle as well as beer. I went with the Amere Blanc which was excellent. We shared some of the cheese puffs and bread to start and both were excellent. I had the coq au vin for my entree and it was perfect for a chilly day. The chicken was tender and flavorful and mashed potatoes made this a perfect comfort food dish. Service was excellent: our server knew the menu well and seemed to have a passion for the food and sharing that with guests. We will be definitely be back on our next trip to DC. read more

One of the most beautiful restaurants I've been to with absolutely gorgeous decor and details! Also very reasonably priced given the ambiance. We came for brunch and it can be a bit tricky to find on Google maps, so just keep that in mind. If it takes you to the hotel, it's on the side facing the street (we had to take an alley through to get to the restaurant). The service was prompt and good, and the food came out hot. We weren't super impressed by the cheese bread option, but everything else had beautiful presentation. I loved my mushroom tart dish (cannot remember name anymore but it had a coffee inspired sauce that didn't taste like coffee but was incredibly rich and delicious). This place seems to be more about the vibe and the aesthetic than anything else, but is a cute spot to try. I'd come back for lunch or to try other menu options. read more

This is a good place for brunch, but our first time going here for dinner was not at the same level. I had the roasted chicken for my entree, & it was on the dry side. On the other hand, my husband & I shared a bowl of onion soup that was very tasty. The other couple with us were happy with their food. My big issue with the place is how they charged me for an item I didn't order. We took a friend here for his birthday. I didn't mention this when I made the reservation. But when 3 of us were being seated at our table, I mentioned that the 4th person in the group was parking the car & would be along soon--casually adding that it was ironic that it was that person's birthday & yet he was outside in the rain parking the car. And then, after we finished our entrees, the waiter arrived at the table with an order of crepe Suzette with a candle in it. At the time, I thought that was a lovely gesture on the restaurant's part. But when the bill arrived & I saw that we were charged $14.50 for that dessert, I had a very different reaction: I don't think we should have been charged for that dessert. It may seem petty for me to object to a relatively small amount being added to a bill that totaled more than $300, but it simply wasn't right to have been charged for an item we didn't order. read more

Whenever I come here, I sit at the bar. It's usually lunch, so I come for a quick burger and fries. At $20 it's a great price point. The bartender, Aisha B., is awesome. Always attentive, courteous and jovial, she remembers your preferences and will ask if you want your usual order. The restaurant itself is situated inside of the Royal Sonesta hotel and is gorgeous with lots of light and friendly staff. My recommendation - get the fries. D.C.'s Wharf area is a great place with great restaurants, but Bistro Du Jour is at the top of the list. My husband and I are outside, which boasts an incredible view of the water. Our waiter was amazing and always checked on us to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. For our entrees, I ordered the Croque Madame, which is like a gooey ham and cheese sandwich complete with a bechamel sauce and a sunny-side up egg on top. It was so rich and flavorful! Had a good meal and good service. However we shared most of what we ate. Except for the octopus. Two of us that ate that were violently sick all night. Called the restaurant the following day to alert them so that others would not endure what we did: a night of vomiting! And the restaurant would not take any responsibility or even offer to comp us the meal. Lousy customer service and dangerous place to eat. The DC health dept found some issues.
