I have always been impressed with the BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse chain but this particular one located in Salinas really blew my mind. Upon entrance we were immediately greeted with a warm & genuine smile from the hostess who promptly seated us to our booth. Then our waitress came by and introduced herself and informed us of any specials and took our drink order. The food arrived promptly, the drinks were delicious, but most importantly (for me) the service was professional and the bathrooms and restaurant was sparkling clean!! Although its chain restaurant, you wouldn't be able to tell her. The front ladies are amazing, and got my boyfriend and I seated right away. The service was not terrible, but certainly not great. It took a bit longer to return with our drinks, and then again to return to take our order. Even then when it was time to order, they were out of everything I asked for in the food and drinks. I ended up getting a burger which thank goodness was delicious. But even then the service took longer again. I think we ended up staying there for two hours. We probably won't be back unless we have to be. Or maybe the bar area has better service. read more

This place is great during the evenings and has a lively middle age crowd. The food is tasty but a tad costly. We had Andy as our server (great service!). The one thing i LOVED the most about this restaurant was the calorie count it had next to all their items. LOVED to know the fact but so saaaaad to not be ordering a 1,200 calorie meal like i was initially planning. I had the single person calzone. Super delish and healthy(ier than the other items) but it was made with white sauce instead of red tomato sauce. I think the calorie count on that was 590? or something like that. we also got the 8 glass beer tasting. the darker beers (stouts) seem "flat" but it's because they make it with nitrogen so that it's "smoother". The food is great and the beer selection is large. However, the service is beyond terrible. As a matter of fact to be honest there is no service. Went in last night for a quick beer and a few appetizers. To begin with there was no one in front to seat us. When someone did appear they simply peeked their head from a corner to say I'll be right with you. He went along side to where I could see through the window the entire waiting staff hanging out in the patio area. Once he did return to take us to a table he basically ran to the table as my girl and I walked behind him. He had a huge smile on his face as he said your waiter will be right with you. Of course he went back to the patio. From the moment we sat down we had many servers pass us by not even aknowledging us. Wouldn't even look at us or the couple behind us nor the large group next to us. About fifteen minuetes later we simple gave up and walked out. I wanted to visit this BJ's a couple of more times before writing my review. I have to say that our first visit was below standards but it was to be expected for a very busy Friday night. Nonetheless, that does not excuse bad service. For my second visit, I'd say it was a much better experience and they deserve every star because of our server Adam. Adam was the epitome of a fantastic server/waiter! He was attentive, friendly and genuinely happy! My friend and I dined here for lunch. We order the artichoke appetizer and it was delicious - the only suggestion I'd make is possible replacing the chips with baked bread. I ordered the Cajun Pasta with Blackened chicken and it was delicious! I ate my entire plate... It was yummy!! My friend ordered the Parmesan crusted sandwich with potato wedges and he loved it just as much as he loved the dinner dish which is served with veggies and mashed potatoes. Surprisingly we still had room for desert! At the recommendation of Adam, we had the Oreo Pazookie and Salted Caramel Pazookie! Good lord it was heaven in the form of dessert! Seating is fast, the server was at my table within 3 minuets and very knowledgeable and helpful. In 20 years of traveling, this is one of the nicest places I've eaten at. Where do I begin? We came here for a birthday brunch today (3 adults, 3 kids). The calamari appetizer had no flavor. The so-called guacamole and salsa with chips tasted like it was sitting out for a few hours. I ordered their breakfast sandwich which actually wasn't bad but it was supposed to come with breakfast potatoes which they failed to bring out. Two of our family members ordered their steak which was way too chewy and had no flavor. The service was okay and she was good at bringing drinks. Decided to try BJ's for the first time with my family and it was a major disappointment. I requested to be seated by their heaters because dining is outside and it was a cold evening. Unfortunately, only parties of four or less are able to sit by the heaters that aren't portable. Understandable, but they should have heaters for the tables of bigger parties, because winter is upon us. Our waiter was really nice but besides that, our experience was subpar. We thought lunch at BJ's was a good idea so we set out around 11:30. When we arrived we could see many patrons were eating breakfast. We had no idea they served breakfast at BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse. (it's a weekend thing) I ordered spaghetti and meatballs and my wife wanted to try breakfast. Our server Tonirose sent my order in as my wife was ordering. After my wife ordered I changed my mind to a pancake plate and we waited. Along comes a side salad I had ordered with the pasta dish. The salad was a remnant from my initial order. An orphan salad. I ate it. It was a nice garden salad. The shift supervisor Joey stopped at the table and we chatted. Nice man. He comped the salad. I would not think about breakfast at a brewhouse but it was very good. My pancakes were as good as pancakes at a good pancake house. The sausage was exquisite and my eggs were cooked perfectly. My wife enjoyed ham and eggs but she was surprised the ham was not a thick slice from a ham steak. It was thin sliced, sandwich-like ham. No matter she was satisfied with the dish. Currently sitting down in a booth as I write this. It is clear that this place tries to run half of the restaurant with half the staff which results in awful service. It started with a full bar area that is probably the only half decent place to get service in here. There wasn't any place to sit in the bar that night. So we had to check in for a 20 minute wait. Strange considering that half the restaurant is closed and shouldn't be that sorta wait. The people who were sat when we checked in didn't get their food/drinks until we had ordered as well...a solid 30 minutes later...Bummer to also see that the tables that also weren't occupied were completely TRASHED! We were seated next to one. Awful, just awful is all I can say. To top it off, our food went to the wrong table right in front of us...just completely awful. House root beer tasted like day old soda that was left out overnight and was returned twice before I just gave up on the kitchen. The birthday Pazookie was appreciated, as my niece, mother and I enjoyed that thoroughly. I use to love coming to BJs but the service and food have gone downhill greatly. A few weeks ago I was there for a late lunch with my mom. I ordered something I had never had before- the chicken club sandwich- instead of being grilled it was burned. The salad I ordered in place of fries came after I was half done with my sandwich instead of before it like requested. Last Friday we went to dinner there and were a fairly large party (8- of which three were children). We were told the wait would be 10 minutes. It was more like 35 minutes. I ordered the Atlantic Salmon dinner grilled and it was...yep burned. I have never had such dry salmon in my life. My mom ordered the Parmesan chicken- which too was a little burned (not as bad as the salmon though). It was TERRIBLE! Another person in our party ordered Fish and Chips but instead of fries wanted Couscous...which came at the end of our meal. Our drinks were not refilled in a timely manner (I just had water- it's not like I had anything fancy). The time it took us to get our meal after our appetizer was lengthy. I have been to this location a handful of times and I've always been dissatisfied with the service. Wait times are extremely long, food takes a while even on slow days, staff would benefit from training, and the outdoor space is never used even on warm days in Salinas due to the lack of staff. I've been to other locations and it does not compare to the service in this one. It's unfortunate as there aren't too many businesses like this one locally. My boyfriend and I went to dinner around 7:40pm and we're told it was going to be a normal 25-30 min wait. 10 mins later they sat us down and gave us menus but we waited 40 mins with 6 different waiters/bussers passing us and "counting us" we had our menus FACED DOWN & we're ready to order. No one came to check on us, offer a water, absolutely nothing. We got up and left because we get very disrespected. In a nutshell: -Typical Salinas service ( servers know they probably wont get tipped / used to being stiffed or feel entitled so they make no effort to provide any type of service) -food at this B.J'S takes a year and day, prey your entire order comes out at once, not in bits or pieces -restrooms are nasty, what does the kitchen look like? -bartender is void of doing their job, or even being behind the bar at that matter. -hostesses are Extremely RUDE , why were they even hired? it's the HOSPITALITY BUSINESS!!! Every guest should feel warmed and welcome. This is so sad, great location, nice building.....could be a gold mine. Food is a hit or a miss, sometimes right, most of the time incorrect and a long wait time. Servers will not check back on you, be prepared to flag someone else down to get a drink refill, or a fork or a check...... I like coming here on Tuesdays for the $3 pizookies. We usually order one of every flavor and just enjoy a little bit of each. I do not care for the lighting during dinner time. It is way too dark. I can barely see the menu, and there have been times my grandfather actually had to pull out a flashlight to read the menu. The service is really a hit or miss. I have had excellent service and also really horrible service. It just depends on the day. As for the food, it is pretty consistent. I like the soups and salads. Walking in, you'd expect a warm welcome. Well the girls at the front "desk" make it awkward. No greeting, just the general question "table for 2?" and that's after they finish their conversation. The food here is just OK; not the best, not the worst. But they sure do make you wait for it. Food prices are questionable. You don't get checked on too often even though they have plenty of employees to go around. Don't see why this place is popular. Been here twice and left dissatisfied both times. I ordered curbside for 4 meals today. The app did not ask if I wanted sliver ware, I just assumed they will include them . None was there not even napkins. Anyway, that wasn't a big deal; I always have those in my car. What I was unhappy about was it took a while to get my food and one of the employee was extremely rude to my sister when sister asked her if we could eat outside underneath the tent since no one was there. It sure a lot easier than eating in the car. She said no and said to wait for the manager. The manager never showed so she finally said ok. I didn't understand why it was a big deal since we told her we wouldn't need service and will clean up.
