In planning a celebratory dinner after my husband's Bachelor's graduation from SUNY Empire State, Black & Blue Steak+Crab's quasi fine dining came out on top out of the other restaurants in Albany, NY. Now we gotta have a conversation. B&B is put together with an over-flashy feel: blinding, ginormous 'Black & Blue' light sign outside, high ceilings, there's faux brick, plank laminate flooring, beams and these dramatic, mounted, round ceiling lamps over the hostess station hitting serious heights. Our 8:30 res. gave us enough time beforehand to chill at the bar with a cocktail while our table cleared. The back dining room is spacious and I was hoping we didn't sit on these booths. But.....we did. It's a matter of taste I guess. Moving right along. Our server Emily and her assistant Riley were sweethearts through and through. Between the crab 'fondue' with 2 carbs of a tasty popover and crisped up pita chips, my chopped salad with my request of balsamic+oil: the balsamic overpowered everything and auntie-in-law's Caesar, they were substantial. Our main plates were equally big. Hubs' Kansas City steak was cooked to a medium when he wanted a medium rare, antie-in-Lw's filet m. was cooked to her preference and my Cauliflower 'steak' was a mound of a glorious vegetable to look at- but again, the balsamic was obvious. Dessert, was great and the price tag was ok for all of our meals nonetheless. Drinks? Well... we had a crappy hand dealt to us with weak cocktails. read more

The restaurant itself is really beautiful. You walk in to a giant bar on the right and a "party" room on the left. The atmosphere is trendy and industrial. We got a drink before our reservation and the bartender was really great. But he seemed to be the only one really working super hard while others took much longer. This impacted service and frazzled him. Our server for our table was luke warm. Our seafood tower came out incorrectly and so did our streak temps. Not his fault but it impacted our meal. The food was good. Our bill came to over $500 for 4 people. Not bad for apps, dinner and drinks. I'd rather spend that at Yonno or Prime. read more

Black and blue is a keeper. The food is consistent and wait there for attentive. Don't miss the bread basket for something for everyone. This visit we had to ask for warm butter for the seafood tower, and it was not as plentiful or diverse as the last visit. Steaks are done perfectly very flavorful. I do find the rosemary a bit of an overkill, but that seems to be their signature. The Kansas City is quite flavorful, but and I think the fillet is superior. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and attentive and perceptive asking if we did not like something and he would bring something else. He was knowledgeable about the wine list as well. I made recommendations. They're definitely come back to this place for an overall experience. This used to be my favorite nice steakhouse in the area but I feel like everything went downhill. The service was good though. Our server was nice. The table was dirty. The atmosphere is always nice, but there was no music in the area we were seated which was awkward. My martinis was fabulous, as always. The bread was fine (I thought it used to be way better, my bf thought it was great) but the butter was way too cold that it didn't melt on the bread. The Caesar salad was really good and the croutons were crunchy and flaky without being too hard. The croutons were really good. The oysters were fine but the cocktail sauce for our oysters had barely any horseradish, it was like they gave us ketchup. The steak was really flat and the filet side of the porterhouse was over cooked. The truffle butter tasted cheap and again, too cold that it didn't even melt on the steak by the time we got it. The French fries were definitely just like regular frozen french fries that you'd get at a bar. Like Sysco french fries, and it came with a "herbed aioli" that was just pesto olive oil. It wasn't an aioli at all. It was just flavored oil. The banana trifle was really good, and i recommend it. The chocolate "truffles" that come with the bill were just pieces of milk chocolate. Like a slightly higher quality hersheys kiss, but not a truffle. This restaurant used to be fancy. Now it tastes like everything is frozen and reheated. read more

Steaks were excellent, I had an Australian Wagyu strip, second choice as they only had 3 ribeyes and they were sold out, my wife had a cowboy ribeye, both were what you would expect. Mashed potatoes lacked about everything but the potato, no flavor, nothing but a potato. Mexican corn was ok 6 out of 10 Just wasn't the best. Brussel sprouts were again good but not anything to order again. Flourless chocolate cake .... Please stop offering this it was terrible as it is everywhere, but they offered it to us. It's a little dark, not as bad as Morton's, but still what are you hiding ? Service was good not excellent.... We went for my son's college graduation celebration. The vibe is really nice and gives a special occasion vibe. The hostess and servers were friendly and accommodating. The apps were really yummy- beef tartare and a wedge salad. 3/4 of us ordered the ribeye. They were not very flavorful and my son's was overcooked. They were happy to take it back and give him another. The cut of meat did not look appetizing. I took my grouper home. I came here with a friend for his birthday for the first time. The atmosphere was a low key, nice vibe, loved the wall with the wine bottles. Food was perfectly cooked, we both got fish dishes and service was on point. However, my only complaint are the prices for the portion of food that we got was insulting. I am from the NYC area and have eaten at very classy upscale steakhouses (Palm and few others) and they serve portions that match prices for an upscale steakhouse, this place does not. The atmosphere here is so fun! Each room is decorated differently with an industrial spin. The service and waitstaff were fantastic. Very informative and helpful. They even went above and beyond with a dessert for the table to share, as we were celebrating multiple birthdays. Black & Blue seemed Torn & Tattered. Some rave about the swanky, bougie vibe, but we got seated in a grungy, run-down booth. In fact, multiple booths were. The vinyl seats featured ass tears and the yellowish cloth backrests were blackened. I've been in shittier dive bars with finer upholstery. For the prices, they should be able to afford a couple of bottles of stain removal and some furniture rehab. As for the food: Felt a bit skimped for the $ The 7 oz. steak w/ a dollop of butter = $50 and didn't include a side of mashed potatoes & corn, which was an additional $22. We had a party of 6 celebrating 4 birthdays at once. Ambience of the restaurant -wonderful. Cool bar area. Staff very engaging and attentive. We ordered an appetizer of shrimp cocktail (excellent -fresh and wonderful seasoned cocktail sauce.) Dinner orders consisted of 4 of our party ordering steaks (filet mignon, regular and cowboy ribeyes), roasted chicken and scallops. All excellently seasoned, prepared to our tastes and plated nicely. Sides were asparagus, mushrooms, mashed potatoes, generously shared. Wine as well as beers ordered. Nice touch was given to each of the 4 birthday people- a slice of chocolate cake- great finish to a wonderful evening. Meal- well worth the cost. I was so looking forward for trying this place. I knew it was going to be very expensive but I was ok with that. The food was not worth the price. The steak was barely ok. Seriously we drove 2 hours because we thought we were going to a good steak house. It was not any better than the " just ok" cuts of steak we are use to. My partner got the most expensive bone in cowboy ribeye and it was again ok. I got the NY strip steak and it was less the ok. It was rather tough. The sides are all separate so the $50-$66 steak comes with nothing and the sides are quite expensive. We ordered the lobster Mac and cheese as one side. It was very Al dente and doughy and mushy, with very little lobster. I'm glad I splurged for some oysters as they were the best part of the meal. Just extremely disappointed. For the price this was a huge let down. When your bill is $450 and you only drank water you should not leave the restaurant hungry . Staff was friendly and nice but not overly attentive. We visited from out of town and we were looking for a more upscale meal for our last night. Steak and seafood were perfect. My daughter had the lamb chops and demolished them, declaring them the best she's ever had. Best part, the wait staff was kind, attentive, and did an all around great job. Our anniversary was a great night out thanks to Black and Blue. I like to choose a nice finer dining experience when it comes to our anniversary, and we hadn't tried here yet. I had heard a lot of good things so I was excited to give it a go. We were seated immediately and the dining room was lovely. The table setting was great and the wine glasses were very nice quality. There were many secondary servers running around filling waters, filling bread baskets, and we had an amazing server for our mains. I started with the wine list and I was very happy to find a cheap ($32) bottle of wine to enjoy with my dinner. They do have a sommelier on site to help if you are looking for an amazing bottle, but I was looking for something in my price range. My fiancé started with a rum and Coke cocktail. The bread brought to the table was really good and we honestly went through a few baskets. When perusing the menu, I thought I might try king crab, but was taken back by the astronomical pricing due to the market. I opted to start with the Oyster Sampler and the She Crab Soup and was so glad I did! My fiancé started with the Mexican Street Corn as an appetizer. The oysters were decent (small), but served with amazing accoutrements. There were these little wasabi caviar balls served on the side which were so exciting. I loved them. I wish I got more oysters just to have more. Additionally, the She Crab Soup was heavenly, dreamy, creamy, delicious. I would go back for this soup. You should come here for this soup. It was to die for. The Mexican Street Corn was also super good and nice and spicy. Very well prepared. We had an amazing round of apps. For the mains, I ordered the ribeye, rare, and he ordered the small filet, medium, both steaks came out to the perfect temperature. We both ordered side sauces, I tried the truffle butter and he got the brandy peppercorn. Both side sauces were great and added a ton of flavor. For our sides we ordered the Orzo Mac and Cheese and the French fries. The Orzo was good, but a little bland, it needed a little something something to amp up the flavors but that's about my only nitpick of the night. The fries were great and I really enjoyed the bright aioli served with them. Half way through the mains, we were stuffed and had plenty to go home with. We were brought the check and some chocolate truffles while they wrapped up the leftovers, a nice touch as we couldn't stomach a dessert. It was a great night out and I would definitely suggest coming here for a special date night! Stoped by early on a Saturday. I was seated at a table in the bar since I was alone. The server who waited on me had a discussion with the bartender about whether she had to serve the tables-- that's really my only ding-- she also flirted with the men while I waited for her attention. The food is worth the price. My steak was cooked perfectly, and rarely do cooks get medium rare just right. The atmosphere in the dining room is cozy and perfect for a long, relaxed meal. Black & Blue gets a gold star for an amazing night. I wore blue, my fiancé wore black. Anyone who didn't go should be green with envy. The restaurant is gorgeous and modern without being overly trendy. We were seated promptly and given some delicious bread while we looked at the menu. We ordered crab cakes to start, which were accompanied by a zesty citrus sauce. Very yummy. For entrees I had the the filet mignon ordered medium rare and my dining buddy had the rack of lamb ordered medium well. My steak was tasty but unfortunately a little over cooked for my liking. It was closer to medium. The lamb, too, was over cooked closer to well-done. We had some sides with our order: asparagus, potato's in truffle butter, and cauliflower au gratin. The asparagus tasted wonderful but was a little over cooked (there's a trend here for sure) so it was stringy, hard to cut, and harder to swallow. The potato's were fine, but the real treat was the cauliflower. Perfection, and by far the highlight of the evening. The service at Black & Blue was impeccable. I think the chef must have had an off day since most things were cooked a little too long but everyone has bad days. Was looking for a good steakhouse in the Albany area that wasn't deep in the downtown and close to the Wolf Road/Central area. Found it, and in fact, it's better than anything I tried anywhere in Albany. It's a bright, contemporary steak and seafood restaurant, upscale but not stuffy or pretentious. The menu is perfect for what I look for, with the only exception being not having Creamed Spinach; I suppose the Creamy Kale could be a substitute, but it's not to me. The steak selections are perfect, something for everything I look for: great NY Strip, bone-in Strip, filet mignon, ribeye, bone-ribeye, and even a Tomahawk cut. I had the Porterhouse because I couldn't make up my mind for a Kansas City Strip or a ribeye or filet. Perfect choice! Seasoned perfectly! Cooked perfectly and served on a sizzling platter. Sides of scalloped potatoes and creamy kale were ok, except nothing can replace creamy spinach. The She-Crab bisque was awesome, and a welcome change from lobster bisque or clam chowder, all favorites of mine. I ended with a cappuccino, pressed perfectly and served fresh and hot. The bar selections were great, even having a great Manhattan to tempt me away from my standard Makers on the Rocks with an orange twist. Beer selection was great with local favorites. Can't wait to return to another Back and Blue, like in Massachusetts, with this very high bar to experience. read more

We ordered oysters and crab cake for appetizer and it was perfect. Steak and snapper was again perfect. Even though we were stuffed after dinner we wanted to top off the night with something sweet and ordered the cake. And to our surprise the portion was more than enough for us to share. My only critique is that the hash browns were a bit salty. I think next time I would try the mashed potatoes based on the positive review of the table next to us. Our dining experience started as we were politely and graciously greeted for our 6 pm reservation. Our server Katina was professional and personable. The service was impeccable. I started with the calamari, which had a wonderful little kick to it. Next came my ribeye which was grilled just to my liking.
