Passed through Amarillo during a recent road trip. I'll admit I was out of my element, but Black Bear Diner was a name I recognized so I went for it. I didn't actually dine in and just ordered takeout, but the quality of the food and the service was great! I was a little bummed they didn't have my favorite chicken & waffles that day, but what I got instead was still pretty good. I'd probably try them again if I were in the same area. read more

Food was good and hot. Service was horrible. We (2 of us) were sat in a corner booth, the waitress acknowledged others that were seated after us. She definitely wasn't observant. Service here is amazing Aly & Mia were amazingly attentive and kind, some of the friendliest service we've ever received. I wish I had gotten the host's name as well because he was just as great, the second he seated us he figured it was our first time there and took the time to explain the menu to us, and was very pleasant as well. Mia constantly made sure all of her tables were doing good even with her multitasking she still kept everyone taken care of with a smile, and is very patient even if you have no idea what you're ordering :). Aly wasn't even originally our server but she still came by to check on us and always cleared the plates way faster than you would expect anywhere else and even kept up conversation with us and the other tables, her vibrant energy lit up the room and made the already great experience even better. The food came out super fast and was SO GOOD. My husband and I came here for the first time ever expecting just a standard diner experience but this place is truly top notch and they clearly have a strong team manning the floor. We love this place. Yes, it is in a truck stop, which means it's probably open when everyone else isn't. The portions are huge and everything that we have ordered has been great. Benedicts, pancakes, enormous biscuits and gravy, grits, really every traditional stick to your bones kind of breakfast you can think of. Service has also been amazing on every visit. We take family here from out of town and everyone is shocked at how good it is after we pull up to a truck stop. As for ambiance, did I mention it's in a truck stop? JK. I went to a Black Bear Diner in Phoenix...food was so bad said I'd never go back....we'll, I needed to find a breakfast spot near the airport cause Rick Husband Airport food choices are bare minimum...Saw Black Bear, knew I hadn't been to one in years so figured I'd give it a try. Host was nice, brought coffee and water right away...Waiter was really nice...all downhill from there. It took over 15 minutes to get my breakfast. Then let's discuss the food. I ordered the hash and eggs with grits. The hash had the flavor and consistency of shredded beef jerky and the potatoes were barely warmed up let alone cooked...I ordered over medium eggs, they were fried to a crisp...the cold toast was slathered in butter and the grits were a solid clump. Got stuck in Amarillo and was excited to try this place. Put in an order and they called and said they had no cobbler but happy to make it for us. When we got there they said they wouldn't make it. They couldn't figure out how to issue a refund and 3 of our 4 items were wrong. The next day my friend went to pick up a slice of cobbler when they opened and they were also out? We decided to order a day later because we wanted avocado toast. They called and told me they had no avocados? I asked if I could cancel and the person said I had to call the store. I called the store and the phone said it was not in service and unavailable. I called the gas station attached and they put me through and the restaurant, who said they didn't have the ability to refund me and I had to figure out how to do it online. Anyways, big hassle. The last time I have been to BBD was when it was here in Westminster Colorado. So we decided to drop by before heading out to go home. It's not quite as I remember. The portion sizes was HUGE for one, I didn't remember that at all. The staff definitely friendly for sure, the prices were on a high side. Which I don't remember that, but then again, inflation. The chipotle sauce I used was amazing, which I personally wish they would bring it to retail stores. That could be a huge money maker there for them. I had the ham and cheese omelette. The ham was on the salty side and the biscuit that came with it was massive. The biscuit alone could be a meal itself!! But dang it was so good and moist, I also made it into a sandwich with my omelette. And I still had to get a doggie bag. But I would definitely stop by again if I'm in this part of the woods. I walked in the main door, and stood at the host stand for a while. There was no hostess at the host stand. The bartender wasn't looking in the direction of the main entrance, and she was talking with one of her patrons. Another customer comes in from the secondary entrance and gets behind me in line. The hostess (after 6 minutes) finally shows up, but helps a guy by the secondary entrance that has a sign saying to go to the host stand. She seats that guy, effectively blowing off the two of us at the host stand. She finally comes to us (about 10 minutes at this point), realizes we're not together, I am wanting to carry out and he wants to dine in. She seats him while another couple comes in behind me. She comes back, asks if I've decided, which I have, and opts to seat the couple behind me. Two diners finish their meal and go to be checked out while she's seating the couple. She goes to check them out, for the 3rd time blowing me off. I give the menu back and told her not to worry about it. Worst service ever. Unable to rate the food. read more

Rating a one because zeroes aren't allowed. Chose a Bkack Bear because we've eaten at others and they were good, but this one was TERRIBLE. Ate there on a slow Friday night - place only had a few customers, should have been a clue. Could only see one employee, working the till, bussing tables, and trying to seat new arrivals. Finally another waitress showed to take our orders. Simple order & pot roast dinner, and the Fri. Night fish fry. Took fifteen minutes for the waitress to come back & tell us they were out of pot roast. Changed that order to a cheeseburger. Took twenty more minutes for the fish fry to come out - worst one I've ever had.. Hash browns had obviously been cooked on a dirty grill, and tasted terrible. Fish was overcooked, probably in dirty oil, and borderline burnt. Meal was Inedible. Finally, fifteen minutes later, the cheeseburger came -- overcooked and on a stale bun. Cook was obviously incapable of fixing more than one meal at a time, and doesn't care how it turns out - he/she should be fired! Never again! read more

Black Bear Diner is one of my faves! Shay at BBD in Amarillo TX is amazing! Being a truck driver, there are times that we can't take our time and hang out. Weather and accidents sometimes sets us back. Today is one of those days for me. Shay quickly acknowledged me when I walked in (that's a huge plus for me) and took my order. I don't like being ignored when I'm about to spend my hard earned money. Shay was very helpful with the menu. I got what I wanted and then some. She's great at upselling. We ordered a prime rib dinner medium rare. The prime rib was cold. They took it back and brought a new one which was well done. I had to ask for the salad, which came with the meal because our server didn't realize it did. We also never received the cornbread which came with the meal. Terrible service.
