I'm not a little man by any means and for $17 this thing is HUGE!! I can't finish it. My wife got the vegetarian omelet and she couldn't finish hers either! Cool menus. Located somewhere between Disneyland Grand California and California Hotel and Casino (I know you read those reviews) is this diner. The reason I pulled over was for gas and to use the restroom. And I was going to just grab some snacks and keep driving but I really like the wood carved bears. And I've been to a couple of Black Bear Diners in California. I don't remember if all the BBD have the same gimmick with the menus but here they are printed on newspaper. I really like the idea. I got the meatloaf and it wasn't too bad. I was hoping for some tomato paste gravy but they use the standard brown. And the kicker is one onion ring. Food was good and the service was great. Our server handled a lot of tables but dropped by when she could to check on us. Overall four stars. Great design of the place and food was good. Service was great. Why is it hard to get good service at places? I have stopped in this location several times throughout the years and the waitress that served us this time, didn't do a good job. She came over and took our drink order, and then took our food order. She never came back to check on us and refill our coffees. The food took long to show up and the coffee got cold. She never came by again to let us know why it was taking so long or check on the food. It was not busy and I can see her hanging out in the back talking instead of checking on us or the food. Another waitress came over and provided the service we needed. So when we left, I took most of the tip I was leaving and gave it to the other waitress!! What a shame that people can't provide good service. read more

We have a Black Bear in Simi Valley, but this one is about ten thousand times better. The food, the attitude, our server Ebony, all were well above the average. Great location, well worth supporting this diner. My wife had breakfast which included a blackberry bear claw turned into French toast, let me give you her review, her words not mine, a religious experience in my mouth. Our Black Bear won't even serve these. I had their country fried steak and eggs, with biscuits and gravy. I think theirs is the best biscuit I've ever had, tasty, fluffy and just perfect. Dr Praeger's Veggie Burger is just fair and really unimpressive. It's a soft veggie patty on a white bun and I didn't feel healthy eating it. Coleslaw was small and mediocre. Corn muffin is good with butter but sweet. Side salad was just fresh lettuce with a good dressing. The inside of the restaurant has a nice solid American appearance but food, service, staff, everything today was just mediocre, like it's a fast food stop for travelers going to Las Vegas. read more

Another server whom I did not get her name but owns a Donkey and lives a hour away in a valley made everyone laugh with her Bunny comes about people eating there salads. The service was great and our server answered all of our questions and provided great suggestions. She knew the large menu very well! Surprise Surprise Surprise! I was not hopeful stopping for lunch in Barstow. We usually stop at Molly Brown's (also recommended) in Hesperia. This time we were hungry early due to skipping breakfast. We like the Black Bear on Las Vegas Blvd so we gave it a try. The service was top notch, our server was tattooed and super friendly. She took our order and brought our drinks straight away. My patty melt was just right with a side super crispy onion rings. The other meal was bacon, eggs, potatoes and a bagel. Good portion sizes, hot food when delivered and a smile from our server. Stopped in Barstow for gas and decided to grab lunch at Black Bear Diner. The Saturday lunch estimate was a 15 to 20 minute wait time to be seated. So 30 minutes later we were still asking how much longer? We thought about leaving, but the staff was nice and we didn't want fast food. Eventually got seated; ordered and back on track.
