We frequently travel along I-15 through the greater metropolitan Barstow area and always look forward to a food stop at Black Bear Diner. As one finds at most BBD locations, you can expect great menu items, generously portioned for a very reasonable amount. There is plenty of parking in front and a very roomy, sparkling clean venue with numerous examples of the namesake animal on display throughout. Breakfast, lunch or dinner are all exceptional. The friendly staff helps to ensure your meal and visit are enjoyable. A nice, varied family style restaurant. We often stop here when rock hounding in the area. Salads are a bit routine and limited. The one thing that our group found disappointing was they run out of desserts regularly. Most of their desserts are pre made off site, frozen and thawed. We learned they're simply too cheap lack good business acumen to insure they thaw enough for dinner. They appear to want to save money on a few leftover pieces of dessert rather than actually sell dessert. We were told we had to be there for dinner by 5 pm to be sure we got dessert. How ridiculous is that!?! The dinner manager needs to rethink that strategy. read more

Service was also great. as long as you ask for a to-go cup, you can take your drinks home! same with the food. ask for it to-go and you can take it home! Finally I have a go to breakfast spot for traveling to and from Vegas. I've always tried to give my business to local diners and eateries but I've been so disappointed. If your chicken fried steak and eggs don't look like the photo that I've posted then don't serve it to your customers. It's that simple. Had prime rib medium rare. Brown around the eye of the meat. Only eye had color. We also had fish fry. The fish was good. Fries were cold and hush puppies were dence and dry.The only excellent part of a meal was the green salad and the mashed potatoes read more

Having a lot of family and friends in Vegas and living in SoCal, we often visit this Black Bear as a meet-up spot. The ambiance of this restaurant has a traditional cabin/mountain feel. Adorned with the looks of log cabin walls and cute black bears scattered throughout, it just feels warm and welcoming. Our group started coming here in place of Peggy Sues after having experienced Peggy Sues rude servers and staff on multiple occassions. The service at this Black Bear is awesome. The waitresses and servers are always super friendly and never make us feel rushed out the door. The food always comes out promptly and still hot. The Bigfoot is perfect for sharing. Their chicken fried steak is one of the best I've had anywhere, but the pancakes are ALWAYS a must. Protions ranging fromvery large to fit-friendly make it easy for us all to find something to eat. The fact that this restaurant is inside a truck stop makes parking easy, and being right off the 15 makes getting to and from smooth. read more

Hostess was great, friendly and welcoming. Our waitress did not have a great attitude she didn't even greet us. The food was pretty good. Clean restrooms. You get your check right after you get your food, no time to order dessert. I personally don't like that makes me feel like you're getting rushed out. read more

GO TO DENNYS INSTEAD! Trash dinner. Good breakfast. Went for breakfast first on thanksgiving. Had to stop my truck over night. Food was delicious but server wasn't even looking at me even when taking my order and didn't even introduce herself until giving the check (Gloria) & Restaurant was NOT busy. and when asked for condiments she didn't even come back I had to ask the other actually really nice severs. Dinner, thanksgiving dinner. At 9pm they were out of turkey and all greens. Seems like management either gave the employees all the good food or they purposely ran out over and hour before closing to detour guests. So instead of turkey and green beans ( came with stuffing and mashers) they offered chilli which was mainly all onion, a salad, and either prime rib or ham. My gf and I got one of each. The ham was like seared on a grilled that was overused and the flavors were so gross. Stuffing was just bread. No flavor. So weird. Then mashers were over mashed like so starchy and thick. I didn't eat anything but the salad and half the chili. Got an extra pumpkin pie slice for my dog which they forgot. I then had to go back in get it. THANKS FOR A BAD THANKSGIVING ON THE ROAD BLACK BEAR $75 I've been going to black bear diners since I was a kid it was a special place growing up with my grandfather who recently passed. This place is a disgrace and has totally detoured me going to another in the future. read more

Had a meeting at Black Bear. Wasn't too hungry but some MacNcheese sounded good. Ordered some Mac & Cheese and when it came 20 minutes later I thought it was a joke!! For $7 of Pasta & cheese sauce it was all of about 4 Ounces in this tiny side dish bowl.... I think the next time I feel like Mac & Cheese I'll go to Panera Bread where for $7.50 you get 10 ounces of Pasta & cheese Sauce! read more

A bit dark indoors and could use some updates. Some of the booths had tears in them so that was a bit off-putting. Decent sized portions considering each plate was average at $20-$25. Server was really nice and brought extra napkins and straws right away. Ribs could use a little more sauce and the shrimp was just ok size. Garlic toast was good. Tri tip was cooked a bit too long so it wasnt med/rare by the time it got to our table. read more

This Black Bear Diner is located right off the 15 at the TA. I had their Taco Salad with beef. It was a huge salad with an assortment of fresh toppings including avocado. I heard that taco salad is for those who want to eat the equivalent of 20 tacos in one sitting. Well, this salad is actually shaped like a giant taco! Good thing I was going home because I would have hated to leave all that delicious salad behind because I couldn't finish it. This salad was so good, I am craving it as I write this review. I have a birthday deal for their Bear's Choice breakfast so I will definitely be back. The Bear's Choice is the smaller, more portion controlled version of The Grizz for those who can't take leftovers home for whatever reason. I come here often, usually pretty good service but this time we had a waitress who was extremely rude and offputting. Kept talking down on us, shouting and insulting us, randomly changed something the last waitress said was fine, and was just straight up insulting to my son because I assume she thought he was the one paying. My son and I stopped in here for a late breakfast while road-tripping, and it definitely hit the spot. The servings here are GIGANTIC. Easily big enough for at least two people to share most items. I got the shasta veggie scramble with hash browns and a whopping big biscuit. The veggies in the scrambled were fresh and tasty, although the shredded potatoes could have been crispier for my taste. I took the biscuit with me and ate it later in the afternoon when I finally started to get hungry again. My son liked his thick sweet cream waffle as well. The kids adore Black Bear Diner because it is a family road tipping place to duck into for the best hot chocolate and chocolate chip pancakes (basically special treat/holiday food) ever! We've been here a couple of times since living in the area. My boyfriend loves this place! It's a bit on the pricier side compared to Denny's prices, but the portions are great and it's nice to support a smaller chain. Service is great and fast.
