Black Bear Diner in Cypress was a letdown. The country potatoes were cold and had such a strong chemical aftertaste that I stopped eating them. We even took them home thinking maybe I imagined it, but the next day they tasted exactly the same. The biscuit was so dry it could have patched a wall. Service was fine, nothing memorable and nothing terrible. The black mold in the men's room was not a pleasant side, according to my fiancé. He was very disgusted how the bathroom was kept. I went here for my free birthday breakfast meal. It was excellent as always. My friend came with me and she got the two biscuits with gravy and bacon, and I had two pancakes with eggs and bacon, so I gave her one of my pancakes, and I got one of her biscuits. It's so much food you can barely eat it, and we ended up taking some home. I absolutely love their pancakes, and I'm not a breakfast person. The service was pretty good. We normally eat breakfast here but mom wanted the all you can eat fish. They advertised it on their menu. We got there and the place was crowded with a bus full of kids in front of us. We were seated and immediately placed our order for 3 AYCE fish plates and one breakfast plate. The waitress was new but she said you get two sides. I ordered Mac and cheese with my fish diner and it was more expensive. We waited for our food and she came and said they were out of fish. Offered something else like the fish and chips. We also ordered onion rings, which were extra. We got ready to order a different dish and she said oh we do have fish. She only brought two plates along with the breakfast plate. Great service, our waitress was very friendly and attentive but that's about it. The food is not great. My husbands biscuit and gravy had hardly any gravy. He wanted sausage patties with it so he paid extra and while they absolutely had great flavor and seemed decent quality....pretty sure it wasn't cooked fully. His breakfast was very salty. I went on a Sunday Morning with my family. The atmosphere was nice and cozy. Waiter was cool and food was good with large portions. When it was time to pay the waiter stated the total of the bill but never brought out the bill. She added the tip into the bill without giving me the opportunity to tip. I tipped her an additional 10% because I was in a good mood but I could be a customer who maybe didn't have what she thought I should tip. I didn't make a fuss about it. If you want to hear people arguing and leaving you to deal with your hunger and thirst, then you'll be in good company here. I've usually frequented the Sugar Land BBD. I didnt think there would be a big difference in experience. FAFO-I was wrong! First off, it was not very busy, but the waitress we had was very slowful in returning back to the table. She was having a whole conversation with another table. I finally flagged her down to order but when the order came out, it was incorrect. They gave my Mom the regular size entree she ordered versus the smaller version. We brought it to another crew member's attention because our waitress was no where to be found. In fact the other crew member provided us refills on drinks as well. Still the restaurant was not packed at all, so where was the waistress? Refereeing two other employees that had gotten into it. I mean it was LOUD. Just really unpleasant. When we were pretty much finishes eating, the waitstress did come by to offer to go trays but the real waitress was cleaning tables. I did tip my original waitress, but I gave a much larger one to the person who checked on us and made sure we lacked nothing like refills and utensils. She also made sure I wasn't charged for the mistake on the order. If it wasn't for that crew member, I probably would have asked for my money back and left due to the ruckess and noise from the arguing. I will say this: Food was spectacular, especially the cinnamon roll french toast!!! You have to try the next time you to BBD, but maybe a different one. read more

This is a hard one to write. Previously I would have given them 5 stars, but the last three times I've gone it left a bad taste in my mouth. And not just mine, but my dining companions as well. The restaurant did not have any Blackberry Bear Claws, I assume because the driver sent me a message for substituting the item, their options was apple pie, which is not a substitute. So I declined that, and I was still billed for this item that I didn't receive. Next, the restaurant did not provide any syrup for the orders (3) besides the one order we never received. Finally, our food looked like it was fixed in a UFC match, one order of the pancakes jumped off the ropes and landed on top of the sausage and Sunnyside Eggs. The next order the eggs looked like they were placed in a choke hold and the sausage could only be found by using a treasure map which was not provided. Lastly, my youngest child said what happened toothed Eggs, they lost the match, and the sausage links were Mia until I had to remove the pancakes to retrieve them. It was really crowded this Sunday, but the service was quick. I sat at the counter since it was only me. Plus, the tables are better suited for larger groups. It comes with gravy on top, I wish I asked for extra gravy being that I'm a sauce person but I added some hot sauce instead and it was perfect. The grits was okay, I added a lot of butter to make the grits creamy since it came out a bit clumpy. My friend had eggs and biscuits. I don't normally like biscuits but this biscuit was actually really fluffy and buttery! The food was good but the service was slow... This Cypress location is still the WORST location. I have avoided this location since my first visit years ago when they first opened. I purchased a family breakfast meal and several items were missing. Someone gave my second bag to someone else. I ultimately received my items as the manager promised, but not as easily once I showed up. This visit, the server was uninterested in serving. The hostess took my order and served my food. He put my water on the table on the edge of the table and more on the other side where another person would have sat. He gave me a flimsy to go type of container that is easily compromised depending on the weight of the food, so I requested a bag as I was leaving with my partially crushed to-go container. He went to the drawer, pulled out the paper bag and was about to open it, but stopped, smiled and handed me a collapsed bag. At that point, I wanted my tip back. The hostess served my meal so I wasn't going to tip him, but that's not me to tip nothing especially since I've been told they don't earn much per hour. Very organized. Seated promptly. They conveniently have text option for when your table is ready. Went on a Saturday around 12 and the place was packed! When we were seated we were promptly waited on and served. She was on point. Overall the menu is awesome they have so many breakfast lunch and dinner options to choose from. We have been looking for a go to breakfast place in Lakewood Forest area of Houston, Northwest Houston area. Waffle House, Dennys, IHOP, not what we are looking for. A mom and pop place that still has real customer service and good basic food. No fancy omelettes, just good old fashion breakfast mom used to make. This morning we tried Black Bear Diner-Cypress, with the hopes of finding the place. Reading the "Credos" adopted by Black Bear. We hoped to have found at least an option that would get us through until finding "it". Waking in hopes were high, greeted immediately by someone, don't know if waitress, hostess or manager. Decor is nice, place was almost empty, got there before 7:00 am. We're seated and waited for waitress, took our drink order quickly. Coffee and a glass of water for my wife. Waited and waited and waited for coffee and to place our food order. Waitress was talking with a table near by for quite sometime. 2 other employees, again not knowing what position they were assigned that day. Waitress, Hostess or Manager, were leaning on counter behind area that employees used. Finally got our coffee and water, took our order. I drank my coffee and finished my coffee. Looking towards kitchen area and you could see multiple plates of food under heat lamp ready to be served. Waitress had gone thru doors towards back. Food still waiting under heat lamp. 2 people who were leaning on counter moved out to counter area and were talking with another employee that just showed up to work. Waitress still in back, food still under heat lamp. Waitress finally came out and served another table that had came into diner same time as us. She then went back thru doors towards back area. 3 employees still talking at edge of counter. Few minutes later, waitress came out and got our food from under heat lamps. Brought our food. Easy order nothing crazy, no added requirements. I ordered 2 eggs over easy 2 pieces of "thick cut" bacon 2 biscuits and gravy. Wife order 2 eggs over medium 2 pieces of "thick cut" bacon 2 sweet cream pancakes Food did look appealing. Eggs cooked right, bacon looked cooked right, not thick cut, but thicker than what you get these days, this is not their fault, our society has shrunk what is considered "thick". Pancakes looked good. Here is my problem. Biscuits and Gravy. Biscuits were huge, cut in half, so 4 halves. Barely covered in gravy. Gravy was bland not much flavor, not sausage gravy, just gravy. Consistency of wallpaper paste, but with less flavor than wallpaper paste. Looked like biscuits were strategically placed with cooked sides up. Tops were up but bottom halves were flipped over so cooked sides were up. Again these biscuits were huge. Taking bite, found out that biscuits looked to be undercooked in middle. Doughy, pressing on middle was like pressing on playdough. It compressed and did not decompress. Obviously could not and would not eat biscuits. One of the 2 people who were either waitress hostess or manager had moved from her spot at counter to front area near door near where we were seated. She proceeded to put her foot up onto bench area and on her phone, sounding like she was on TikTok, Instagram or Facebook. Not seeming to care what was going on, obviously I do not what she had going on, but perception is key. I now know we can scratch this place off our list of go to breakfast spots. read more

Let me start by saying we've eaten in BBD in California as well as in Las Vegas both for breakfasts and I must say both were excellent in service as well as food. So my expectations were high when I found we had one here in cypress. I must say I was so disappointed. we went on a Friday around 5:30 pm there where very few people in the place and still we had to stand at the door while the server and another employee were in conversation. we were seated and given menus there was two with a baby across from us and a group of 4 behind us. the waitress arrived got our drink order and left. when she returned, we gave her our orders, my husband was the small version of a chicken fried steak and his side was mashed potatoes with white gravy and Italian green beans, mine was small version of pot roast my side was mashed potatoes and I asked for fruit, the waitress and I even had a conversation about it, her telling me it was a mixed fruit and I was good with that. she left and only a short time later another person brought our plates. I was a bit surprised to see that the potatoes had white gravy on them and there was no fruit at all. our waitress came by and even commented on the white gravy when I had a pot roast dinner. I let it go but I watched my husband eating those beans that were swimming in liquid almost like they were out of a can, his comments about the chicken fried steak were not kind, I once ordered from a home delivery chicken fried steak and he wasn't pleased, he described the one he received here as tasting like that steak hard and no flavor. My pot roast was ok but the vegetables that were literally hidden under the meat were mushy and again looked like out of a can. our waitress only briefly stopped at our table to ask about tea refill and left again. we waited to get our ticket but didn't see her anywhere, again no business except for the ones I previously observed. She finally showed up to clear our plates and asked about dessert, we declined. she came back then and placed the handheld on the table and walked away. we never got a receipt. and we finally got up and walked away. Great disappointment after 2 previously excellent experiences at a BBD in other states. I do hope they get their act together in that location as there are numerous very good establishments in very close proximity to this store. read more
