Food is great, staff is friendly, but the coffee is horrible. You would think all locations would use the same coffee and if they are someone needs to calibrate the machines. The coffee at signal hill is phenomenal and delicious with great flavor, but Downey tastes like it was made by someone angry at life because they hate coffee. read more

Went to black bear diner and was served by Nadia V, and I did not like my experience with her. She had a total attitude, and it ruined the meal for me! Staff should learn to be friendlier, as every time I go to this location, I end up disappointed. The table was not clean well and underneath the table was worse. I think the folks that had the table before, eta underneath the table. The floor was littered with used napkins and smashed food. The hobo omelette was not very good and the pancake was cold. The potatoes had a funky seasoning. The best part was the drinking cup that had lipstick on the rim. Black bear is amazing for it constantly delicious food. Today they dropped the ball. The restaurant was empty besides for one more group. Our food sat on the expo for about 10 minutes before the server with a streak of purple hair and a nose ring stopped chatting with her coworker and bought out our food. Immediately after she set our food she rudely shoved her ordering tablet in our face and told us we had to pay now because she was being sent home, which she never left even after we were done with our meal. People would come and sit themselves because no one was there to greet them. On top of the service my medium well steak was extremely over cooked, bland and terribly seared. I've tried some bad steaks at diners before, but this was on another level. I really hope it was a fluke. Still, I would steer clear of that dish and take your chances on something else. First time eating in Downey, I've had food in one in Arizona completely different experience. This place was lonely literally three tables but yet the server was very rude. Don't know if she was having a bad day. Whatever the issue was I was just so disappointed. It was my baby's ninth birthday didn't even ask why is she wearing a button that says birthday girl. The food was really good, my complaint is about the service. One of the bussers was a better server than our waitress. She messed up our order after several times correcting her when she read it back to us, was rude, and incredibly inattentive. She served us the wrong food and didn't give us any utensils so we asked the busser and he was the main one asking what we needed and helped us out. He got our utensils, grabbed our plates, and gave us boxes to go. She only came to check on us when I was saying this will be reflected in her tip. It always looks so small on the outside but inside is so big and they have shields up and there's always tons of people. It was more way packed and popular than I thought it was. Which is a good thing but it adds a wait time so be prepared for that. This place is pricey but at the same time not. We had four people eat with us and it was like $84 but every meal is like $10+ each and they charge you for refills and pretty much anything you could possibly think of. The food was really good and it at least comes with a lot of food in each meal so it was worth the price which is nice. It's very well proportioned so be prepared to EAT here too. The staff was friendly but she took a while for everything like it took 15 minutes and two reminders for a water. read more

Good food and good service. I like their chicken fried steak with country gravy. I had it with their cornbread which was good, a little on the dry side, but nothing a little butter can't fix. Their servers are very attentive, kind and happy to make suggestions. My kids enjoyed their pancakes and eggs. My only gripe is that they don't have Coke products. If you love diner food and big portions this is the spot!! My boyfriend and I decided to give this a try since it was by his house and I love diner foods even though it has 3 stars we gave it a shot! They have their own parking lot!! Once we went in, we felt like we were in big bear or somewhere up in the mountains! The vibe and decorations were spot on! Cozy cute and cabin feel. The entrance front has souvenirs you can buy. We didn't wait very long to get seated but we could tell the service was pretty slow. There menu options are endless!! Everything you can think of they have it! I was definitely eyeing in the meatloaf and the waitress recommended my boyfriend their most popular dish is the chicken steak. We chose the smaller portion since the waitress says there serving is very big even the smaller portion. We also ordered a vanilla malt milkshake and for dessert we ordered a blackberry cobbler. The waitress was no joking when she says the portions are huge!!! Even for the smaller portion I had to take mine to go! Everything looked really good and it was also very delish! The only problem was the food wasn't very hot. Milkshake was pretty good very generous with the whip cream and the cobbler was alright, there was too much filling I was expecting a pie crust dough underneath but it was just a bowl of blackberry with one pie crust on top for the cover. My boyfriend's chicken and steak was really good think and crispy the only complaint he made was that his veggies were a bit undercook. Overall I definitely want to come back and to try their pot roast as the banana cream pie! Food was definitely affordable for how much they given us!
