Its been a long while since the last time i came here. My last visit was not so good. It was the bad customer service that didnt want me to come back. Its been years now so i figure lets have another go. We came on a tuesday, to our surprise it was quiet busy. The setting is like a cozy cabin. The staff was friendly and our waiter was attentive!!! I came in last Friday with my husband, and it had been years since our last visit. We had such a great experience--definitely a 10/10. It was a really busy night because of the all-you-can-eat fish special, but our server, Marco, made sure we were well taken care of. He checked in on us often and made the night enjoyable. The food did take a little while, but that's completely understandable for a packed Friday night, so no complaints there. The fish was delicious, and I'd definitely recommend coming here! read more

The hostess was grumpy & acted like we were an inconvenience when we walked in. She asked us how many in our party...2. Then she took our name and walked away. (The restaurant only had 5 other tables full at the time). After waiting 5 minutes with no other communication, we left. One of my favorite places to get a nice home type meal, Turkey mashed potatoes and green beans; delicious meatloaf meal or sandwich. Really delicious cornbread and or biscuits. So many choices to choose from. The meals are all generous servings and the service is really good most of the time. A really big bonus to add to all the delicious food options is their excellent assortment of cakes, pies and pastries. I have visited several of their locations and everything is very consistent. We went to Black Bear Diner in Modesto on Thanksgiving Day with another couple. I have to say it was one of the worst for the prices. I had the prime rib dinner which was $31:00 The prime rib was the thinnest piece of meat I have ever had it was about 1/4 inch thick and overcooked. The cornbread dressing was so salty I couldn't eat it. My wife had the ham dinner and the ham was sliced so thin like for a sandwich nothing was like the picture on the menu. I came into black bear with my best friend, my mom and my daughter for her 15th birthday and it didn't disappoint at all. The food was great and so was our server Linda, she was the nicest person ever to make sure we were taken care of. We waited about 20 minutes for a table for 3 at 11:30 on a Sunday morning. Eric was our server and couldn't have asked for better service! My husband and I went to Turlock diner a week ago and the prices they charged was absolutely ridiculous. I ordered fish n chips NEVER AGAIN it was over cooked and tasted like old fish. My husband got a vegetarian omelet with a side of chopped ham they charged him $8 for the ham. The waitress never came over and refilled our drinks then when we went to check out we had to walk to the register and stood there about 5 minutes before my husband finally got her attention she and the cook were talking in the kitchen and not taking care of the ONLY 2 couples in the restraunt. I walked up to the greeter to give my name and was told that it would be about a 20 minute wait. I look into the restuarant to see all these empty tables while there were so many people waiting. I actually took a video. I just couldn't believe it. As we are standing there with all the other people waiting to be seated, I started watching the waitstaff. They were all working hard. Tiffany was our waitress. She came by quickly to tell us she would be with us soon. We had to wait but we could see how overwhelmed she was. Tiffany was friendly and professional. She checked on us and continued to apologize for us having to wait. My fiance had coffee and not once during our stay here was it empty. Thank you Tiffany for your amazing service. You are a hard worker. We will no longer visit this location on the weekends. If you are in a hurry or a person that does not have patience don't go here. There's an urban legend of travelers stopping at a diner where everyone looks at them like they shouldn't be there, the vibe is eerie, and they eat hastily and leave because it's all so uncomfortable. Dinner at this Black Bear is the closest I've come to that experience. Being almost empty at dinner time was eerie enough. Servers were genial, yet strangely unclear on the concept that orders should be taken and food brought. My pancakes were fine. They were recognizably Black Bear sweet cream pancakes, and nothing was wrong with them. The women's restroom was mostly clean, but the sink counter appeared to have had a bite taken from it by a gigantic angry bear. These stories usually end with the travelers discovering the next day that the diner burned down decades ago, which I'm pretty sure isn't the case here, since I get promotional texts from them all the time. Black Bear is a great concept, but something is just off about this branch. read more

We were excited to go somewhere new as a family and decided to try black bear diner. Such a let down we were a party of 6 (5 adults and 2 kids). We ordered our meals and an extra one to go. Tell me why the Togo meal came first, then a giant salad. And sure a salad is easy so I guess, but then we got the rest of the meals except for a kids pancake option. My poor niece waited patiently for her meal while the rest of us almost finished our meals. She was so hungry she shared her cousins meal and ate some of my fries because of how long her cub meal took. I think what made it worse for me was when I asked about my nieces meal there was no sympathy or apology given. Not even when they dropped it off. While the waitress was friendly service was terrible. Overall good is underwhelming, under seasoned and cold by the time it got to us. Bummer will NOT be coming back. read more

I have been to several different Black Bear Diners in my life, especially in Sunnyvale, Carson City and thos one in Modesto and have frequently been pleased with service, food & price at the first two locations. The Modesto restaurant is an exception with incredibly slow service, clearly understaffed. They were much better during peak of pandemic with outside seating area. Now just indoor seating & definitely slower than the average bear. Ordered meat lover omelet, veggie omelet & blackened salmon with an oreo shake. The wait for our food was very long. Upon food arrival the server spilled the oreo malt so had to be remade which to their credit they did quickly. What they didn't do quickly was clean the spilled shake on table or floor next to our table. It remained 25 minutes later as we left which was pretty sad. The food quality was commensurate with expectations which keeps rating at 3 instead of something lower which they likely deserved. Smokey and Yogi deserve better so hire more table help & clean up the mess. read more

Went on Christmas Eve. (That is also our anniversary.) We went there specifically for the sweet cream bear waffle and eggs benedict. They had a holiday menu, which didn't include either of those unfortunately. We ended up talking to our waitress who managed to get our order in even though it was considered off menu. The food is excellent, my waffle eggs and bacon were delicious. My husband seem to enjoy his eggs benedict and they brought him Pico for his eggs. The coffee is fresh, and they have a very respectable decaf. Our waitress was very polite and efficient.
