This place is OK for breakfast, you can sit and drink coffee and have a pretty OK breakfast. However, lunch or dinner or a whole different ball game. After a sketchy dinner that we didn't finish we were given a $10 certificate to come back and try again which we did. My husband got the meatloaf, how do you screw that up right, and I got the wild caught salmon. The salmon comes and it is hard as shoe leather. It had taken quite a while to get our meals, so when the waitress asked if she could have the cook re-make it, I told her no, just take the fish back and bring me a plain burger patty that is not over cooked. It only takes about four minutes to cook a burger however this took far longer and when it came, you guessed it, it was over cooked and hard as leather. They said sorry and charged us for the salmon even though I didn't eat it and it was quite pricey - much more than a burger patty. SO If you just want to have breakfast then it's an OK place to go - as for the other meals I probably wouldn't do it. The salad that came with the meal also had a chemical taste to it. Id give the food 4 stars, especially the breakfast. We have been to Black Bear many times and had a good experience. last time was different. The kitchen staff struggled to get our order correct and we waited 30 minutes for our food. They forgot to put all the toppings on my wife's omelet, I asked for a loaded potato and got a plain one. The server did his best to keep up with the circus in the kitchen. He even comped part of our meal. We tipped him well. But the kitchen staff WOW!! They should go home get a good night sleep and try again tomorrow. read more

I don't know about everyone but I don't like to go into a restaurant and be surrounded by a bunch of dirty tables, mean while the employees are gossiping at the register. Our waitress never came back around to refill our drinks, someone else brought us our food and too top it off my wife's food was cold. You would think it was busy but that's my point, it wasn't. I wrote a review of this BBD in April 2017 shortly after they opened their Ogden location. I was underwhelmed by the experience so stayed away. I went back for the first time this week. Sadly, my overall review remains the same as it did almost 2 years ago. I arrived at 10:30 on a Monday morning and was seated right away. The restaurant was about 2/3 full. I was seated at a small booth directly across from the kitchen. My server was training another server. The food was better--but it took 30 minutes to get my meal. At no point in that 30 minutes did anyone offer to freshen my coffee, see if I needed anything, get me a complimentary muffin or toast--nothing. The food was not worth waiting 30 minutes for. Sitting across from the kitchen I could see at least 5 cooks. And the bulk of the wait staff (at least 6 people at one point) was standing in front of the pass begging the cooks for food for their tables. With that many cooks it doesn't seem like not having enough people to cook is the issue, but rather people needing to work smarter, not harder. The server apologized for the long wait but I felt like after that long--in a restaurant that was not full--I should have been offered a discount of some kind. None was forthcoming. I'm disappointed that after almost 2 years it seems like they still cannot figure out how to get good food to people in a timely manner. Came with a group of friends, wait was horrible (waited an hour), service was ok. Unless you crave pepper, do not get the roasted turkey. I like pepper but that was just way too much! I wanted to like this place. I watched all the construction as I drove up and down 12th street the last few months. Hoping for something better than Dennys and IHOP which frankly isn't hard. Service: Why is it every time I go to a chain diner at 6am that a twacked out, sunken eyed, toothless waitress always serves us. Food: I ordered biscuits and gravy, 2 over easy eggs and thick cut bacon. My girlfriend ordered a waffle with scrambled eggs and bacon. My biscuits and gravy was DISGUSTING! The gravy itself tasted fine, but the biscuits were stale, dry and crunchy. When I poked my fork into the biscuit it broke apart like a salad crouton. Then randomly there were 3 (just 3) pieces of sausage in the gravy. What's weird and gross about that is they were the same types of sausage that are used for pizza. Yes, Italian style sausage in biscuits and gravy. I didn't even finish it. Next, my eggs were boiled in margarine. It was smothered all over my eggs. They tasted weird. I don't know if it was the obscene amount of margarine or the eggs themselves were bad. My bacon was pretty damn delicious.... but it's hard to screw that up... Wait, they did. My partners bacon was burned and charred. She didn't finish it. She said her eggs tasted like margarine (imagine that) and her waffle was just ok. I tasted it and it was just a pancake in waffle shape. Seriously. Same batter you'd use for pancakes. I feel like for the price. You should get a freaking waffle. Awful food. Atmosphere: It was very nice and clean inside. All the utensils and plates and hot sauces were clean. I was impressed until I heard the absolute vomit of language coming from the cooks speaking Spanish. Their language was horribly offensive. Loud and disgusting. News alert! White people know Spanish too bro. Just because you speak a different language doesn't mean you should cuss and speak terribly about women. Price: For the size of the portions they are a dollar or two over priced. For the flavor of the food, they should have paid me for my time to eat it. Again, I REALLY wanted to like this place. Ate at the Black Bear diner in Ogden Utah this evening. The service was great (considering the waitress was very over extended)but the food was downright terrible. The waitress was handling 28 persons between four tables. I ordered the paw size chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. The meal arrived Luke warm and probably had been sitting under a heat lamp for quite some time as the gravy was "skinned" over and dried out out. I had no green beans on the plate as ordered but literally two small slices of carrot and three small broccoli flowerettes. Hmm... musta ran out of green beans and substituted mixed vegetables....what little there were, it was a pathetic looking plate. The fried stake was dry as as well. Not impressed! We also did not receive our pancakes as part of another order item and ordered two separate scopes of ice cream for dessert and only received one of desserts. I would say the waitress was well over extended and clearly had other things on her mind. I won't be going back to Black Bear! In summary bad food, poor service and the staff at this place was over extended and not in tune with the orders as food was piled up on plates at the pick up point and sat under heat lamps for way too long! read more

Where has this diner been all my life? I have ordered many things from here since it has been popping up in different locations in Utah. I love the variety on of the menu and the feeling of the whole environment is awesome. The menus are adorable faux newspapers with the menu printed on them. The staff is always so nice and the joint is pretty much always in tip top shape. Now the food. Oh the food. It never disappoints. They offer a huge taco salad that is easily enough for two people. And when I say huge, I mean it. It's ginormous. They have incredible burgers, hot sandwiches and salads. Their biscuits and gravy and one of a kind and their pancakes taste like candy. This place has been open 16 days. It showed. They need more staff. 20 minute wait with a half empty restaurant because of the lack of staff. Now I rather they keep tables empty than stress the staff but they need staff. The side salad was large. The bacon blast was lacking in the blast ingredients, especially the avocado. 1 slice for a large sandwich is sort of insulting. The bacon was great. I didnt know there was an onion ring shortage in utah. I got 5, 3 mini. Other plates I saw had them piled high. Felt wronged. Taste was fine. Portions way off. Needs more in staff. Stopped by last night for dinner (was told by a close friend that the sweet cream pancakes are a MUST TRY) and IM 100% glad I decided come here! I ordered the griz (I think) and HOLY COW. That was AMAZING! 2 pancakes, 3 eggs, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, 1 chunk of ham and a HUGE portion of hash browns. My daughter (1yo) and I had the BEST waitress helping us and all of the staff was extremely friendly! Everyone kept stopping by and talking to her, waving to her and keeping her happy so that I could eat in between feeding her bites of food! There weren't many people here (maybe 8 tables full that I could see) but still, unbelievable service and GREAT food. Yes, the pancakes were so worth it but dang they are SWEET! I was a waitress here, I walked out Sunday morning may 23rd at 10:30. I've never in my life been so disrespected as a waitress. I am in the process of being diagnosed with a seizure disorder, I had my second documented seizure while I was employed here. I'm currently in the process of spending thousands of dollars on tests to figure out what's wrong. Yesterday, when I had an episode at work where I started blacking out and lost control of my thoughts, I was told that I was inconveniencing the restaurant by needing to go home early, even though I called the next server on and got her to come in early, and I talked to the servers on the floor about me being cut first and it wasn't an issue. We cut another server at the same time as me. I did not inconvenience the restaurant by letting the other servers make more money. Then this morning I told the hosts to stop seating me because I had several tables in my section without orders, and was told by the assistant in the middle of me running around trying to figure everything out that I was not allowed to talk to the hosts like that. I walked out then. As a utah waitress I made 2.15 an hour, the restaurant doesn't even cover my taxes, let alone enough to yell at me over my own disabilities. read more

Tori treats her staff like garbage. I love the food and most of the employees, but something really needs to be done about her. She creates a hostile work environment, and therefore an unpleasant dining experience. No staff should be treated that way. Update: Totally shocked that one pancake is $3.50. Yes ONE pancake not a side order of pancakes- Just 1 pancake!!! It better taste like the Prime-Rib of Pancakes at that price. Mediocre. Fish was frozen fillets. Vegetables are individually dumped from a plastic steamer bag onto the plates. Felt like most of the items seemed pre-prepped and were basically heated and served. Staff is learning but helpful and friendly. We sent a dish back and ordered another item. There were other food complaints within earshot. Tried to make my way through a Big Bear Burger, but I think my stomach is shrinking. It's good, and messy, which is the main component of any burger. If it's not messy, then they made it wrong. Taco salads are somewhere along the lines of something to get if you haven't eaten all day. I have seen people's heads smaller than this thing. Horrible horrible horrible experience last night (11/14/2018). My wife and I love Black Bear Diner. We've been quite often to the St. George location and the Layton, UT location. Both of those places are great. However, we attended the Ogden UT location last night and were met with some of the worst dining experiences we've ever had! We came to the restaurant at roughly 7pm. We stood at the desk waiting for a host/hostess to come and seat us for nearly 10 minutes. The restaurant had maybe 4 or 5 tables that were occupied, so the place was nearly empty. There were a few servers walking about, but they all ignored us. Finally, a hostess came and took us to a booth. She placed us at the very back corner of the restaurant next to the window. It was freezing temperatures last night, so sitting next to a cold window was not ideal, especially when there were so many empty booths that were available. Additionally, the A/C vent was right above us, and it was ON! Why they would have the A/C on when it was freezing outside is beyond me. I'm not sure why we didn't ask to move booths, but we definitely should have. Failure on my part. Our server brought us our water and we asked for some straws. She said she would bring them soon and took our food order. She came back with my wife's salad and our cornbread muffin about 10 minutes later and again we asked for some straws. "Of course", she said. Another family came and sat down at the booth across from us. She came and took their food and drink orders. As she walked by us again, we asked AGAIN for some straws. She placed one down on the table. Just one. She said she'd be back with the second one. We sat there for 26 minutes (I timed it on my phone) before she finally came back with our food. EXCEPT it wasn't our food! The food was for the family that came and ordered 10-15 minutes after we did! She just set the food down, handed us our second straw and then started handing the food out to our neighbors. We were beyond frustrated. She then turned around and said our food is "almost ready" and that my wife's "BLT" was taking a bit longer to cook. Now, I'm no expert, but a BLT seems like the easiest and quickest item on their menu to make. It's bacon, lettuce, and tomato on some toast. Period. I had the croissant egg sandwich (which tasted horrible, by the way) and that is also something super quick to make. If we had ordered the roast or Prime rib or something, I would have understood. Additionally, there were still only 5-6 families in the restaurant and they all had their food or were just wrapping up eating. So we're not sure what the kitchen staff were doing for almost half an hour, but they certainly weren't making our sandwiches. Our server FINALLY brought us our food. Cold and disgruntled, we started eating and found that it was cold, and clearly had been sitting out for a little while. Additionally, my croissant and egg sandwich didn't come with the bacon I ordered. When the server walked past again, I asked her about the bacon. She said she would go grab it. While waiting, our neighbors finished their meal and left. This family of 5, arrived after us, ordered after us, received their food before us, and finished eating their food ALL BEFORE we even got all of our food. Finally she brought my bacon and we finished eating and asked for the check. We walked up to the desk to pay, only to find that nobody was there to take our payment. We stood there for a good ten minutes. There was a young man who we had seen taking payments earlier, and we saw him over at the kitchen talking to the kitchen staff. A few servers saw us, but ignored us. Finally, we heard one of the kitchen staff say and point to us that, "they're waiting to pay" to the young man. He said, "I know, but I need to take care of this to-go order". He then proceeded to grab a bunch of food and fill up some bags with it. Again, it took a good 10 minutes of being ignored before he finally came up to the desk and took our payment. He handed us our receipt and pointed with a pen to the tip line and said, very bluntly and unprofessionally, "You'll put your tip payment here". YEAH RIGHT. Like I was going to tip you guys! I do believe in tipping, so I did tip just 10%. But as far as I'm concerned, not one person in that entire restaurant deserves a tip, or even any business in my opinion. Me and my significant other recently dined at Black Bear diner in Ogden. Our server was amazing and the food was good. However me and him still left feeling disappointed and disheartened. This is due to the general manager Torie. Although she was decently kind to her customers she was the complete opposite to her co workers. Me and my boyfriend were seated right by the cooks window and spent our whole dining experience hearing her raise her voice, put down, degrade, and overall just be a jerk to her employees. I understand that as the manager it's her duties to make sure things run smoothly however there was no constructive criticism it was all pure dismissive rude and judgmental. Black Bear Diner did not disappoint tonight. Great food and lots of laughs with friends. Exterior of restaurant is clean and trendy. Interior was ok, booths were a little dated and lots of "rustic" bear decor. Our waitress (Jil) gets 10 gold stars for being awesome and on point the entire night. Food was good from the chicken avocado club to the cheeseburger salad. (Yep, it's a real thing.) Taco salad was a huge, probably the biggest salad I have ever seen. My husband and I love the cinnamon roll French toast, but last time we went I had some green stuff on the top where all the icing is?!
