Empty tables that needed busing while so many people were waiting to be seated. Jackie and the buzz-cut girl were up front walking the "I'm busy without being busy walk" and picking their own glasses to sip a beverage when they could've been busing tables and getting the waiting people to tables. When we came in, Jackie greeted us and told us it'd be 15 to 20 minutes. It was about 15. As we walked back, we glanced and saw so empty tables. Food was okay and didn't really take that long to be served. It was really okay. I can't recommend the pancakes, though. While we ate, we saw others leave. And (really) in 30 minutes, the dirty tables just kept adding up. On the way out, we heard a manager-type tell Jackie to wait 15 minutes before seating anyone. I came here for a Yelp event a few weeks ago. It's hard to miss the building with the bears outside close to the door when you enter. I'll start by saying two main things, the staff is super friendly and welcoming! Secondly, it's a great place to take little kids. The best and cabin theme is inviting and they have a bear mascot that walks around kids fly to to hug. However, as someone who doesn't have kids and lives ~25 minutes away, I don't know if I'd go back. The menu is huge but I still had a hard time finding something that enticed me. I ended up getting a Cobb salad, which I know is not the usual diner food. It was ok. Nothing wrong about it and the portion size was good but it was just ok. I have a friend who comes often with her kid because he loves the kids menu but she herself has also struggled to find something on the menu she likes for herself. Sadly very disappointed. I've ventured into several Black Bear's before in other states. So hearing one was opening local I was excited. Not quite sure why they picked this specific spot to open. The interior has the traditional bear cabin feel, but is one giant open room. Very cold on a winter day and less home-y. Luckily, we were able to be seated immediately. The menu is pretty large and includes break/lunch/dinner options. We were there for the big breakfast spread. I ordered the Mini Volcano. After what seemed like forever, our food was finally brought out. The portion size, taste and overall experience fell a little short. For as many breakfast joints there are around the Kc area, this wouldn't be one I would b-line back to. read more

The marketing and online look to this restaurant is cute with their theme, but I cannot say the same about their food. Let me first off, start by saying that Black Bear Diner is better for breakfast rather than food-food. If I had to eat dinner there again I would've gotten a burger or chicken strips, because you can't go wrong with either at any restaurant. I have had Black Bear Diner for breakfast and their pancakes were great, but it was so long ago. In this instance I had dinner. I ordered the fish and chips and my friend ordered the blackened salmon. Fish and chips are basic, they came with three fried cod fillets, french fries and coleslaw. I ordered extra tartar sauce because something told me I should, and I am glad I did, cause it was the saving grace for the fillets. The frozen fish fillets you can get at the store have more taste than what I ate, I sprinkled salt pepper and lemon on them, lots of tartar sauce...but it didn't help. Fries were nothing to rant and rave over. I used extra ketchup to help them out. If it wasn't for the fries I would've left hungry. My friend wanted to eat something healthier and picked the blackened salmon dinner which is 740 calories. She said the salmon was cooked ok, but no seasoning. She doesn't eat pork and the mashed potatoes had beef gravy so she asked to leave it off because beef and salmon didn't sound appetizing. When the green beans came they had bacon in them so she couldn't have them. Overall I would stay stick to breakfast when you come to Black Bear Diner, cause you cannot get breakfast wrong. I gave them two starts cause their pancakes are great, but the decor and taste of the food I ordered deserves no other recognition. We've been anticipating the opening of this restaurant and are sad to say we were really disappointed. We both ordered the all-you-can eat fish (Fridays only). It took a while to come out, but not really bad, but as soon as the food was on the table we were turned off by the look of the fish, but I'll start with the sides: Coleslaw - looked great. Had barely a hint of coleslaw dressing. It was basically watery cabbage. Almost like you took coleslaw and tried to wash off the dressing. Fries - fine. Not special. They give you way too many, but okay if you want to say "generous portion". Hushpuppies - meh. Not bad, but not good. I wouldn't eat them voluntarily. Just bland, boring. Fish - the breading was a turnoff. It's not a battered type of breading, but not really a "catfish" type of breading. It was thick and too crispy. I will say the original portion for me wasn't horrible, but much thinner breading and less overcooked than my second portion. For the second portion (they bring 2 pieces at a time even if you only want 1), it was so over cooked, I basically just hollowed it out to eat the fish inside (also what Mom did on her fish). The fish inside was really stringy and chewy. Our server was still getting used to being a server. We got NO REFILLS on our drinks. Barely got checked back on. Watching others around us, a lot of food was being left on plates and food was coming out overcooked. Biscuits were way over done from the way it looked and even the muffins looked lifeless and rock hard. A person I was watching picked hers up and sniffed it. I love this place! The service is great and the people are really nice and go the extra mile to make things right even if you make a mistake when ordering from not reading right! Not many places have this level of service anymore and the food selection is huge! It's diner style food and a good quality of it. It's more a chain level food quality and not the best I've ever had found only at independent places, but the fun and cozy mountain great outdoors cabin bear feel is original and the best (maybe only) in the region. It's great for bigger groups too. The prices are upper medium but not bad. The coffee is good too and I really enjoy this place. You can see from my many reviews I don't just give out 5 stars, but this place gets one from me as it's a nice place for good food to make great memories with friends and family. read more

We ate here tonight. There were only two tables occupied in the place, but our server wasn't particularly attentive. I was very disappointed that they were out of the turkey options- I settled for pot roast. It was good, and the portion sizes are nothing to sneeze at, but when you start to look forward to a certain dish just to be informed that it isn't available, it's disappointing. Salads could use a lot of work- way too simple. We were told tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and lettuce. My dad ordered his normal and they left out the cucumbers, and our salads came with the tiniest amount of tomatoes. Terrible experience from the minute we walked in the door. Called ahead because we had a party of 11, but no "reservations" for parties less than 15. Arrived shortly before 1100, 45 minute wait. Settled in for the wait, and at about the 42 minute mark, let the hostess know 1 of our party decided to leave. Hostess was nasty and said we should have let her know sooner because they were setting the tables up for 11. Because a party of 10 instead of a party of 11 would change the number of tables to prepare? Hmmmm... Finally seated and waited 15 minutes for drinks. Waitress was flighty, never asked our large party if we were or were not on 1 ticket, spent time trying to get an order out of a 3 year old and telling her parents to be quiet when they tried to order for her, then completely forgot one of our party's order before heading back to the kitchen. Had to follow her to remind her she'd forgotten one of us, so she came back and got his order. Waited another 25 minutes for food. Unfortunately, the missed order the waitress came back for? She never actually entered it, so the rest of the table was almost done before he even got served, and others were sharing their plates with him while he waited. End if the meal, take the ticket to the hostess to check out, but when we began to tell her how to split it (same nasty hostess from when we arrived), she asked us why we didn't ask the waitress to split it, then walked away in a huff to get the waitress to come split it, herself. Waitress was huffy and in a hurry, "Nobody told me to split it." Well, we kinda couldn't get a word in between you trying to pry a full sentence breakfast order from a toddler, and then running off without another one of our party's order! We will not be back. And judging from the ridiculously bad service...I doubt this place stays in business too long. read more

We had a great breakfast experience. Husband ordered the Grizzly which had two large pancakes that were sweet and tasted of vanilla, ham, bacon and sausage. Both of our orders came with hashbrowns and we got the strip kind. We really enjoyed them. They are basically grated potatos graded with a very large grater. They were perfectly crispy. I want to give this restaurant a better review but not tonight. I know that they just opened and are still working out the kinks. My wife ordered breakfast for dinner. Her meal was French toast with bacon and eggs. This is a simple order but my wife's French toast came out under cooked and mushy and it took 15 minutes to replace. I ordered the meatloaf with a side of mashed potatoes with gravy. Again a pretty simple order but my meatloaf came with brown gravy which it should and my mashed potatoes came with white gravy. Who does that? The waiter should have asked me if I wanted brown gravy for both or at least told me that the potatoes had country gravy. With all of these little issues the food was decent. The meatloaf was tasty and my wife was happy with her meal once it was cooked correctly. I want this place to succeed because Johnson county needs a good American restaurant besides Cracker Barrel. There was no wait when we arrived. Our waitress was the highlight: rather tall, very friendly and helpful (Zianna). My drink was never emptied before a refill came. The food came pretty quickly as well. When the steak my wife ordered was under done, the waitress was quick to come get it to cook it longer and apologize for the inconvenience. My steak was a little over cooked with a slight charred taste, but it was close enough I didn't feel I should mention it. If this restaurant didn't offer unexpectedly low prices for steak, I would have rated it three stars. You get more than you pay for... but not necessarily all you want. If you're coming here for the steak because Texas Roadhouse is too busy, the wait might be worth it at Texas Roadhouse. The house salad dressing (bacon ranch) was good, but thick. The house salad presentation was lacking. You should try their house Shasta Steak Sauce. It reminds me of A1 sauce but with a twist. The atmosphere is very cabin in the woods feel. There were tables that were dirty when we came in and the same tables were still dirty when we left. There was only one person busing, yet there were others standing around, doing a little or nothing. The food was decent, but nothing to write home about. We had a nice server. We were there Thursday evening at about 6:40 and sat at the counter. The lighting in the restaurant is too much for evening. It was like being in a convenience store. Don't sit at the counter even if you're alone. It's really just in front of the hold window where the manager expedites. You watch food sit and listen to the person yell for updates in food prep and call for servers to deliver food to tables. "Paws!" Ugh. Bad place to sit...you just see too much. Terrible server in every way. While we waited for our food...she was bending over doing something on a terminal. My wife's food came first. Because it was a triple digit summer day, I was lookin for a lighter option and I'm hooked! Best chicken salad ever!!!! Every part of this was fresh and the fruit, avocado, bacon, and crispy greens were spectacular. Server offered to bring salad dressing but it was so not necessary. VERY DISAPPOINTED. The food was okay and came out in a timely manner. Nothing at all to write about except of the two orders, both were missing ingredients. My burger had none of their homemade thousand island dressing. I was looking out for it since the menu made a deal out of it. The other order was missing several promised ingredients, including avocado. The French fries had zero seasoning and were dry. But the worst offense was the cleanliness of the place. See photos. I brought it up and was told they were understaffed. That may be true, but I counted 4 front of house for 4 occupied tables. Not acceptable for any restaurant that cleanliness becomes optional when and if you are stretched thin. Cannot recommend. read more

We went to the Black Bear Diner today for the first time. Luckily we went a little later between breakfast and lunch so the wait wasn't long. But they were busy. The staff was super friendly when we arrived. We only waited about 5-10 mins for a table. Our waiter was very friendly. He had quite a few tables he was tending to. But he kept everyone taken care of and was still attentive. Good server. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger. And my wife and daughter both ordered eggs and hash browns (one ordered bacon and one ordered ham). They both very much liked their food, as did I. The biscuits were very good and were enormous! This place has good portion sizes, so if you leave hungry it's pretty much your own fault! The quality of food was good as well. Thick cut bacon. Good quality beef and ham. Comfy and casual! Haven't had anything off the menu (except the chocolate cake) that wasn't terrific. Is it trendy? No. Are the portions massive? Yep. But the food is comfort-food perfect, and it's not overpriced. We LOVE the turkey club (best in JoCo), the sweet potato fries, the burgers, and the pot roast. Last night was our first time at Black Bear Diner. Needless to say, we won't be returning. We were excited to try a new place in the area. So much so, I took pics of our food which will be posted. I watched as there were at least 9 plates just sitting under the heat lamps while 5 wait staffed mulled around. This place could really benefit from an expediter. To much of my surprise my plate was one of them sitting, while my fiance's came up fresh. The waitress grabbed my plate and squeezed the portion of veggies that came along with my meal. I ordered the Wild Alaskan Pesto Salmon served on a bed of steamed spinach meal that came with soup or salad, corn muffin and two sides. I chose the minestrone soup, which was the star of my meal. The Salmon was overcooked, the pesto spread was cool to touch and was smeared on with what appeared little effort. For my two sides I chose seasonal vegetables (apparently right out of a bag) and fries. My fiance ordered the Chicken Parmesan plate which he liked. The chicken was seasoned pretty good and served over pasta with marinara sauce. Now let's talk service. Our waitress was really sweet and answered all our questions promptly. What I hated was there was a waiter that kept laughing into his left hand, not elbow. He proceeded to serve food to 5 other parties, coughing into his hand once he returned to the food pick up station. He served with both right and left hand, not once stopping to wash or sanitize his hands. The temp changed with the waitress DeeDee came. Wow! Some friends told us about this place and I'm glad they did. There was no wait. We liked the atmosphere of the place. Neat decor. The waitress was great and the food was fantastic. I had the pot roast and my husband had the meatloaf. It was so good. The portions were generous. We tried sweet potato fries and loved them. The cornbread muffins are like cake - so good. We were not impressed with the cobbler or coconut cream pie, as they neither had much flavor. That was the only negative part of our experience. We will be coming here again but skipping the dessert.
