There was a pretty good wait which is always a good sign for great food. I was alone so I sat at the bar and had zero wait. Shannon was my server and she was great. The good came out really fast and was really good I ordered the single biscuit and the potatoes with a side of sausage. Really good little breakfast spot!

They do a LOT of things right, I've never had a bad experience here. BUT this time my Scram Bowl eggs were a little wet/runny for my personal taste. They must be short-staffed though because there was a long wait with lots of empty tables. Staff is very friendly though.

Always great breakfast. Love the Scram Bowls - my go to that is full of flavor and a little spice to kick off the morning. They also had pumpkin pancakes for the season and they were the perfect flavor. Oh and the biscuits...feels like enjoying a home cooked meal at grandmas. Comfort is the word that comes to mind.

The food is ever so yummy! This is my new favorite place for breakfast! There's only one waiter I've not been pleased with, but I think he learned his lesson the day when I was not pleased. Oh, and the seating is very comfortable as well, the booth tables can move which is really nice for those with a bigger tummy such as myself! Many places have stationary tables which makes booth seating uncomfortable.

The City Diner is outstanding! They definitely have their locals and regular customers, but we're also welcoming to us as first timers. Our waitress was jovial and courteous, and answered all of our silly questions. My wife had a half order of biscuits and gravy. I had a double cheeseburger, which was enormous. Those patties are no joke. I would get a single next time. Thankfully, it did not come with fries or tots as that would've been entirely too much food. I could hardly finish it, and I was ravenous. We want to come back and try other things here. It will not take a long time before we return. My wife loved her biscuits and gravy, and she is from the south. You've got the best neighborhood charm, the BEST breakfast and lunch fare, and honestly some of the nicest folks in town working. The sandwich came on this thick toast that was super crunchy, in a good way. The inside had Fluffy scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and some aioli that tied everything together without being too much. It wasn't greasy, just rich and satisfying. I had fresh fruit on the side, which I appreciated after that salty-savory hit from the sandwich. What surprised me was how filling it was. I wasn't hungry again for hours, but I didn't feel gross after eating it. The coffee was bottomless and good. The vibe inside was chill, cozy, kind of like hanging out in someone's artsy kitchen. The staff was friendly! I loved all the fresh flowers and artwork adorning the tables and bulletin board. It added a nice touch to the eclectic vibe.

Portia's Cafe (Feb 14, 2023)…read more Portiia's Cafe was not a planned visit while visiting Kansas City. It was my last day in Kansas City, and I was planning to hit the American Jazz Museum before flying back to Seattle late afternoon. As the airbnb area where I was staying did not have any fast food around, I had to decide on a breakfast place before the American Jazz Museum opened at 10 a.m. As I was traveling cheaply using public transportation, the 2 closest places to the Jazz Museum that's easily accessible and within walking distance to the museum were either Portia's Cafe or McDonald's. Bring a fan of diners, Portia's it was. It was drizzling that morning, and Portia's was a slight walk from the bus stop. Dragging my wet luggage into the Cafe, I was cheerfully greeted at the entrance and took my seat not too far from it. The waitress recommended some of the food and I sat down to observe life in the cafe. The place is old but very comfortable. A different area ( I sat near the counter in a booth) had many pictures and posters on the walls, and provided history of the restaurant, and more. The food came - a solid omelet with melted cheese and meats, a nice portion of hash browns, a fresh squeezed glass of orange juice and a cup of eye-opening coffee. It was on the greasy side, but that was exactly what I wanted as I intended to skip lunch before the late afternoon flight. The restaurant environment was lively, with many long term customers coming and going exchanging Valentine's Day greetings. Feels like "Cheers" in the day time - "You wanna go where everybody knows your name." After finishing my meal, I visited the other area of the restaurant to look at the pictures and posters. The younger waitress there told me stories of some of the pictures. I actually met Portia as well, the proprietor of the restaurant. So cool! Please have fun by visiting the place and enjoy some home style cooking. Shout out to the young waitress there who showed me around the photos and posters. So I jumped in my car and drove to West Bottoms, a less than desireable, industrial area. There, I found a little corner store. I go in and walk up to the counter and say, "I hear I can get the best cheesesteak in KC here." The gentleman shakes his head and takes my order. Cheesesteak, add lettuce and tomato. Ten minutes later, I'm walking out with the daily special that included my sandwich, fries and a nice strong Orange Crush from the fountain. I am starving, so I rip open the bag, determined to devour it right there on the side of the street. The first sign of disappointment was the size. Maybe 6" but no more. Maybe I'm used to the footlong portions of Atlanta, but this was leaving a lot to be desired. I forgive it because maybe this is the size for the special. (Shrug) I take my first bite and get a mouthful of well-seasoned meat. But where is the cheese? I try another bite, thinking that maybe the end just was missing it. Nope, still no evidence of cheese. It takes me until midway through the sandwich before I reach the gooey cheese that makes a cheesesteak great. As I was eating my sandwich, I grab a few fries. Eh. Hand cut, which is good, but they have a slightly rancid burnt flavor. Like the grease has seen one too many days. And the lack of salt just elevated the off-flavor. I quickly abandon them and get back to the sandwich. I look down, but there is hardly anything left. Three bites and I am at the end...minus cheese. I'm left with bread ends, a few pieces of meat and a ton of lettuce and tomato. Sigh. Overall, I give the sandwich a 6/10. The meat was flavorful, but the size and the lack of cheese left me wanting more. The fries...let's not even rate them in this review or we will definitely be doing less than 3 stars. The redeemer? That crisp, delicious Orange Crush. Thank you God for soda...or as Midwesterners say, pop. (lol) Would I go back? Maybe. I would see if there is a 12" version and I would ask for EXTRA cheese and emphasize that I would love it to be spread across the whole sandwich. And I would skip the fries. Trust me, skip the fries.

First off, let's hope for a major infusion or potentially new owners, I don't really know. But it's undeniable, the vibes that made this Winstead's growing up and coming here with grandparents are long gone. The jukebox remains, but doesn't work. The carpet remains, but isn't cleaned. The original booths remain, but are cracked to pieces. They don't even pipe in music half the time, which leads to an odd atmosphere. The crowd can be interesting here too, depending on the time of day. That being said, the combo of nostalgia + price + kid friendly makes this a spot we still attempt to visit from time to time. The servers are always friendly here, and their onion rings are delicious. Of course, you have to get a shake/malt/skyscraper of some kind as well. Lately, each burger I've had here has been a step down from the last. There are quite a few fast food burgers that are better than these. Hopefully they can revive some of the glory days of this iconic spot, and if not, we'll still find ourselves here on occasion, taking in the Plaza lights and having some fun family time like we used to with our grandparents back in the day.
