This chain is good, the best location I have been to is in Madras, OR (best food and service) The menu at all these places is the same, the decor and the whole experience is similar but this location lacks on service and food quality. We usually get breakfast and sandwiches, which are usually great but as of the last two visits here it seems like the fries are not as good, undercooked and definitely soggy and you'll see a plate with a heaping amount and you get the left over 'pieces'. The sandwiches took a hit, lacks taste, bread seemed stale before they toasted it and it just didn't taste as good. Finally, the service seemed a little forgetful and it seems that the waitresses here prefer to talk to some regulars rather than getting you something you asked for. Don't get me wrong, waitresses talk and that's fine but diners always made you leave satisfied, happy and fed. I don't know about this location anymore. It used to be, maybe a good kick in the pants by management is in order. read more

We have never tried a BB Diner and since the one in Roseville, CA is always crowded we decided to stop here for breakfast on our way to WA. First the positives. The service is friendly, energetic and totally over the top. Five stars for the wait staff! We both ordered small meals since we didn't want to "roll put of there" and had a long drive ahead of us. I had an egg, ham, hash browns and a biscuit. The best thing on the plate was the biscuit. It was the largest one I had ever seen; light and fluffy. The ham slice was thick and sweet but had a bit of gristle. I was extremely disappointed on the hash browns. I was looking forward to some crispy potato but got shredded potato hardly cooked through. No brown crispness here. My husband had his favorite, eggs, bacon, and pancakes. He liked his meal okay. The dinner and lunch menu looked inviting but is rather eat at one of my favorites. read more

Worst Black Bear restaurant experience EVER!!! We were seated and served beverages and then ignored for 20 minutes, while we watched patrons being seated and their orders taken at 3 surrounding tables that came in after us. We were finishing up our coffee and juice (at which point we were going to leave) when a waitress came over and finally took our order, very indifferently I might add. Our food was put in the cook's window for pick up and delivery, and the waitress that took our order was informed by the cook the order was ready and she said she'd be right there....instead, she served people coffee, dropped off guest checks, and stopped to check on her other customers right next to us. Our food was finally delivered 7 minutes later by another server. Our food was cold, my toast was dry, which I did not order that way, and my eggs, which were ordered 'scrambled easy were as cooked and dried as a hard boiled egg. Not once did our waitress or any employee come to check on us or refresh our coffee. We have been Black Bear patrons since it's inception and this is the 4th consecutive time the experience has been disappointing...this LAST time being the worst of all! Cool spot! The waiter forgot us a few times, but customer service isn't great in this town. My friend ordered the fish tacos, which SUCKED! I had the pancake meal with eggs, bacon, sausage, ham and hash browns. It was a lot of food for at a great price. The hash browns were soggy without flavor. Bacon was the best meat. Pancakes are hands down the best thing! Buttery, fluffy and delicious treat. Eggs were pretty good. I would return for breakfast. Didn't wait too long for food. Orange juice is freshly squeeze, yet I don't find it worth $5 a glass. Stick with breakfast and get the pancakes. read more

Exactly what I wanted out of breakfast. Of particular note was their spicy sausage patty, which was so flavorful, and their fruit which was so sweet and fresh. As their credo says, the portions are huge, so splitting a meal is very reasonable. The service was super friendly and fast, which means I could have gotten in and out quickly, had I not been savoring my extremely satisfying meal :) I would never even consider hitting an IHOP or Denny's if a Black Bear was within striking distance. read more

Stopped in on the way home from Otter Bar Lodge. Easy to get to right off I-5. Friendly wait staff.....good coffee and food. Had the Black Bear Breakfast Stacker. All my favorite items on one plate. We were greeted by the hostess and she had no personality. She seemed like she was under the influence of something. We were taken to our table and no one came by to offer us drinks. When the waitress came by she got on the hostess for not getting us drinks. The hostess then took our drink order and never brought them! When the waitress saw we never got our drinks she told the hostess to please go get the drinks. The hostess then walked back over and SAID OH YE I FORGOT WHAT DID YOU GUYS WANT. This was horrible service. The food was ok but the hostess needs to go as our overall experience was bad. Avoid this place in Redmond. read more

We love Black Bear but tonight something was off. For the first time we got horrible food. Our waitress was great and kept apologizing. It was in no way her fault, she was great at her job. We found out that the wait staff has to split the tips with the cooking staff. We normally over tip but tonight we knew the Cook was getting part of her tip and and after the horrible food he cooked no way was I rewarding him. We made it aware we would have given more if our waitress was getting all the tip. The manager tonight was not like the other managers we have experienced at Black Bear, this made me question if people have recently changed. Still will go back because our waitress was awesome, just might have to order something easy to cook. read more

Stopped here on our way home from Ashland , Oregon to the SF Bay Area after seeing a billboard advertising the place a few miles down the road. It is very close off the freeway, with lots of places to buy gas as well. My husband wanted breakfast for dinner, my daughter wanted a big salad, and I was just hungry! Our server was VERY friendly, accommodating, and fast. The food was tasty and plentiful and everyone got what they wanted. I would definitely stop here again. read more

Just the most awful breakfast I've ever had :( What is wrong with Black Bear diner, first time and they are giving u 2% milk and warm to boot, the food comes cold and the egg's must be powdered too..we waited close to 45 minutes to have cold sausage's to boot, bacon is done in a fryer too..the bacon was so oily I refused to eat it and they still wanted me to pay something I said, no way..it's still on the table and I'm not paying..The owner needs to go to Becca's in Anderson, Ca and spend time with a real cook to learn how to cook food properly...There milk Ice cold and real too, OJ cold to the touch...Just broken hearted on how Black Bear Diner is ripping off the public...the OJ is sitting in a plastic container who know's how long and it was warm when I tasted, so it had been sitting awhile..there bringing to many people in and not enough cook's properly cooking and they are cutting out the real milk, juice, egg's to make more money off the public...Christine Palma read more

The breakfasts we ordered were excellent. They consisted of sweet cream pancakes with the most generous slices of bacon I think I ever had. The pancakes were delicious and tasted as billed "sweet cream" almost like a dessert. The eggs were cooked perfect. The service was outstanding and immediate. In all I would highly recommend you stop wether you are headed south or north on the infamous 5 freeway. read more

Big portions does not make a good tasting meal!! We've been to the Mt Shasta BBD and it's always been pretty good. The Redding BBD is another story!! The service has always been good but the food always leaves a lot to desire there. Especially dinner!! What I've always received was either cold or over cooked! the french fries are as dry and hard as the come (cheap brand I think). Also, the other night we had two burger meals and our son had a waffle with hash browns. the meal was over $45!!! Not impressed! The portions are big but a whole lot of crap is still crap! read more

Everytime we visit redding we stop at black bear we love it! great big plates of good comfort food. We've been there about 10 times over the last ten year and we've alway left full and happy. Wow! My husband and I used to love coming to eat at the Black Bear Diner and have fond memories. We understood this is the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend and a busy time. However, we arrived between breakfast and lunch. What a huge disappointment. We didn't mind the half hour wait for the food after ordering. What we did mind was this.....I ordered a half turkey sandwich & salad. Some of the lettuce in the salad was previously frozen & most of the remainder slimey. The bread that used to be served as sourdough was actually sourdough. This was more like mushey white bread. Not only was there something that appeared to be part of the edge (aluminum?) that is used on a container to cut plastic wrap/foil embedded in the top of the bread, but two hairs inside of the sandwich next to the turkey. This was discovered after picking the sandwich up to take a bite, while mayonnaise being so thick that it was oozing out the bottom. Immediately my Husband informed me that it was all over my face. ( proceeded to scrape off what I could and wipe the remaing teaspoon or so off of a piece of lettuce with a napkin) That is when I dicovered the hair. By this point, I thought my Husband was going to be ill just observing it all. Since our Server did not once ask how our meal was, I asked another worker if there was a Manager available. The Manager was prompt and reassured us the piece embeded in the bread was steel they used to clean the grill with. Wow! Thats comforting. Told Him that we are not ones to complain but this was all just too much. Let us know, no problem & this was part of His job & offerrred to replace my order. No thank-you! We'll take care of your lunch. My Husbands o.j. was warm & his corn beef hash more like "dried out jerkey" We didn't complain about that. His bill waas still over $16.00 for one. The food was awful and the service pretty much the same. We headed over to Trader Joes where someone overheard us talking about the experience we had just encountered. That person said...I have just recently heard three different people saying the same thing.....How the Black Bear Diner used to be so great and has become a real dive. Also stated how could they still be in business. Our guess was #1 location & #2 the former good reputation. We are just so sorry people link this establishment to our wonderful Redding. read more

Their fresh OJ is to die for and everything there is absolutely reasonably priced. Fantastic family environment, and our usual waiter Jon is super friendly, efficient, and helpful. I've really liked the food at the Grants Pass Black Bear, but the one here in Redding is pretty ordinary. Nothing special. Tried those little pies in the front case once, and it was terrible. Cardboard crust, canned filling (tasted like) and fake "whipped cream". Won't be going back. read more

Horrible service and staffing issues. The past 2 times I've been here there has only been one waitress, multiple bus people and the place was slammed. Food stacked up in the kitchen waiting to go out and an hour wait time. This place used to be amazing but recently it has declined greatly. I will not be returning anytime soon. read more

As a whole I love Black Bear Dinner's but this location is a disgrace to the chain. We were travelling through and thought let's get a good breakfast. The hash browns on the outside were cold and I requested bacon crispy. They kept putting the bacon IN the MICROWAVE. If I wanted microwave bacon I would have gone to a fast food joint but they said it was so thick they don't put it on the grill. The correct way to cook bacon is to have it on the grill and put a press on it. It honestly would have not taken long at all. But twice he kept putting it in the microwave and waited on other people while I was waiting for it. When I gave him the "glare" he realized he forgot it and scurried over to get my bacon. At that point I am almost done with my breakfast. It also took 40 minutes to get our breakfast as well, other people that came in after us received theirs before ours. The best thing about the whole breakfast tho was the fresh squeezed orange juice that is why I gave it one star! read more

We planned a trip to the Mt. Shasta Lavender Farms and several friends recommended the Black Bear Diner. We stopped for breakfast in Redding. Unfortunately, perhaps we should have tried the Diner in Mt. Shasta instead. The waitress forgot about us after seating. The platters of food were enormous, which was great because we were hungry. The food was disappointing. The hash browns were not completely cooked and bland, the biscuit crumbled (obviously not made that morning), eggs bland, the mushrooms in my friend's omelet were cold. I ate my eggs and dumped a lot of ketchup on the hash-browns. As were were leaving we decided to purchase the homemade bear claws. The bear claws rode with us until time for a snack. We thought at least the bear claws would be tasty. No, we were wrong. The bear claws were so old and stale and dry that not even a glass of water helped them go down. ...and I'm not one to pass up a bear claw. I won't return to the Redding Diner. I loved the decor.....so I may try Black Bear Diner in another town. The Redding Diner took no pride in the food they serve. read more

i have eaten here many times and mostly it's great. i noticed they seem to be getting an attitude towards all the homeless people that hang out around there. they put up a iron fence to separate themselves from the 99 cent store across the parking lot no biggie to me but it's the attitude that bugs me. i think it might be rubbing off on their other customers i was eating there last night and a guy rushes in and starts saying that somebody is stealing a old school caddy parked outside well it was my ford falcon and it was my son putting his bicycle in the trunk the customer who was mistaken was out side yelling homeless slurs at my boy and seemed to be wanting to start a fight or something. after i straitened them out and went back in to eat i just was not all that hungry anymore so left and went home i did not bug me much until i thought about it this morning i mean they seem to be harboring an attitude about the homeless as something to be fenced out or harassed. i do not know what to do about them but when it wrecks my dinner over my boy just putting his bicycle in the trunk of my classic falcon just seems easier to go across the street to denny's instead. they just ignore the bums that have been hanging around there for years. oh by the way while it might be easy to mistake me and my boy for homeless bum's i am actually a hillbilly and proud of it! and so is the boy. but we aint homeless we got a five bedroom ranch house sitting on ten acres out in beautiful bella vista and have lived here since before there was a Redding "150 years" we pay taxes go out to eat and other stuff just like the rich fake cowboy's that seem to dislike the homeless and populate the black bear since i do not normally put on my Sunday best to grab a bite to eat. i just do not need any problems created by people who really thought that he was stealing my car i get that. but it's the why did they think that just makes me want to go somewhere else. or maybe they could just move the restaurant to a swanky neighborhood if that's the kind of people they want to attract. i mean they are after all located in the old jerry's restaurant building next to kmart and the 99 cent store behind mcdonalds not exactly the most perfect place to be if you do not want homeless or hillbillies hanging around read more

The food is always A LOT so if your starving, go to Black Bear diner. The service leaves quite a bit to be desired. Don't expect a "good morning" with a smile. If you do get that, reciprocate. Those people need more smiles! The meal selection is casual & breakfast options are typical; eggs any way you like them, sausage, bacon, ham, toast (several bread choices), muffins etc. The coffee is pretty good & is served in a giant mug so you can sip on it for a while without having to flag down your very busy server. Lunch & dinner options are "home style"; french fries, burgers, sandwiches (if you like BLT, they make a super one. The same with their club sandwich. STACKED high!) Their fries are very good & are "steak style" large fries. Black Bear is famous for their blackberry shakes & blackberry cobbler, both made on site. If you saved room for dessert after your meal, splurge on the cobbler & make it ala mode. You will not regret it! The crust is rich, flaky & buttery, as it should be. There are plenty of other dessert options as well. The ambiance is very casual & often folks from church on Sunday occupy the Bear so get in before 10am on Sunday or prepare to wait in a line that literally goes out the front door. Attire for this restaurant is come as you are. Travelers are welcomed in their sweats the same as Sunday church-goers. Come one come all. No need for any special attire. Simply pants or any kind and a shirt of any kind will suffice. This is a great restaurant for kids as the children's menu offers options children will actually eat and mom & dad often have more than they can eat so sharing is easy without leaving anyone hungry.
