5 stars for Miguel and the kind staff here!! I came in and ordered the Country Scramble, which was definitely enough for 2 meals (probably 3 haha but I made it 2). Loved the generous cream gravy slather and the fresh hash browns. My car is currently in the shop, so Miguel was gracious enough to provide the WiFi password and let me stay at my table and work for a few hours while waiting to hear that my car was done. Tonight was the 30th Anniversary celebration of the diner offering prices for many items at 1995 rates. What a great night to visit. If you chose to order a dinner off the one-night special menu, the only things that were missing was the soup or salad and bread. Otherwise, what a deal! The place was crazy busy; understandably so! So service was pretty good considering. The food was served hot and was tasty as usual. With regard to decor and cleanliness, I don't think a thing has changed in the last 30 years. A friend and I went to lunch here. Only 3 tables being used! Not crowded at all! Never had worse service anywhere! Both of our orders were wrong and the server said it was the cooks fault. Never got drink refills ... had to track someone down to get our server for ANYTHING! I will never return. I wish I read reviews before I went! I returned my food and ate elsewhere! Here's the kicker: 4 attendants sweeping, vacuuming, "looking busy" (no patrons to clean up after)....but the restroom was atrocious! I have pictures! Some of the sweepers should clean the restrooms. We've been wanting to try the Friday night all-you-can-eat fish fry basket at Black Bear Diner, and we finally made it in tonight! For $19.99, you get two pieces of fish, three hushpuppies, French fries, coleslaw, and tartar sauce, and it is a LOT of food. My husband and I each ordered one and didn't even make it to a second round. Honestly, we could've shared one plate. The fish was crispy and delicious, i really liked their tarter sauce The fries were great, even the coleslaw was really good. Everything tasted really good overall. The only letdown was the hushpuppies -- they just didn't taste quite right, and were very dry inside, alomost like they wernt fried all the way through, which was disappointing. Our waitress was very attentive and kept our drinks full the entire time, which we really appreciated. The kids loved their meals too. Each of them got the Mini Volcano from the kids menu, a hot chocolate, and a free sundae with their kids meal. Overall, a great family-friendly experience with generous portions and friendly service. Plus the restaurant is cute with a little gift shop insude. We'll definitely be back and next time we plan on trying some of thier pie! read more

We were seated at a clean booth. Our server came quickly & was a nicer presence. Everything was pretty straightforward. We ordered The Grizz, The Volcano, & a Kids Sprinkle Cakes. It didn't take long for our food to arrive. We were able to add a side of strawberries with whipped cream & have incorrect scrambled eggs corrected to the ordered poached eggs quickly. I ordered a thanksgiving meal for my Mom and myself. I sent an email that same day to two different addresses requesting a full refund. Never received a reply back. Not only was what we got awful except the turkey 1. No cornbread for either meal. 2. Missing one slice of pie. 3. The service was extremely slow! It wasn't busy, with only 6 tables occupied with guests!! We waited 15 minutes for the waitress to come take our drink and food orders. My husbands burger was amazing! My cornbeef & cabbage, not so much!! My broccoli was rotten and the cook said it was not rotten, but "fire grilled!!" I was not going to argue, but it was rotten!! Not sure what has happened under the new ownership here. Meals are mediocre at best and the last 3 visits you will wait at your table for up to 30 minutes until the wait staff comes to you to take your order. This was our go to for breakfast almost every week. Donny and the manager, Francisco, were the best and knew the customers and always had something nice to say or ask. Not to mention remembers your favorite orders, we never had to say what we wanted. We've been busy the past couple of weeks and haven't been able to make it in. We went in this past Saturday to find there is new ownership and they fired almost everyone..,including Donny and Francisco who have been there for forever! We waited for a table, staff seemed to be oblivious there were people waiting. We ended up leaving. Funny though I see this recent review and the compliment for Donny. Man...what happened to Black Bear Diner? It's been a few years since we've been to this location. We left today thinking that it might be our last. We've enjoyed meals at BB in the past at various locations but not sure if this location is poorly run or just having an off day. We were promptly seated in a comfy booth when we arrived. The table next to us had a baby with them and we noticed them placing the order with the server after we were seated. Food took a long time to arrive. So long that the table next to us just stood up and left without saying a word to anyone. (probably because it'd be too hard to find someone). As a result, we got to watch the confusion when the server brought out their order but they had already left. Then another server came by to drop off their food and had to ask every table if it was theirs. My California omelette was extremely dry. I usually love omelettes and am not super picky but this was just inedible. House potatoes were good so I ate those. Turned over the omelette and it was brown and cooked too long. It tasted like they had hired an inexperienced teenager to cook the food and they were trying their best to make it look good but failed. Even the avocado slices tasted slimy. How does one do that? Husband had to send back his ground beef patty from the Loco Moco because it was red inside and he did not want to get sick. The pancakes were extremely dry also. Took a few bites and decided it wasn't worth it. Went home with stomach pain and had to run to the bathroom. The heck?! So disappointing for a meal where we spent $60. Server was nice but also seemed too busy to really care. The older Mexican man who took our payment did not say a single word of greeting to us or even thank us for coming. He seemed too busy writing down names and numbers in a party on a folded up placemat. As we stood there waiting to pay, we had nothing better to do than to stare at the pies in the display case. Husband commented me on how sloppy the whipped cream was on the pies. He guessed it was because whoever put it in the case wasn't careful in putting them inside. My feeling was that they simply didn't care and employees were just doing enough to get by. While it seemed decent a few years ago, now this location just seems like it's tired and doesn't care anymore. Can't really eat without hearing word-for-word conversations of tables around you. We came in for brunch on Sunday and were seated right away. The service was quick and nice. My husband had the New York Steak and Eggs. It was a huge portion and very fulfilling. It would've been a 5/5 if the steak wasn't well over done. :/ Especially since he asked for it medium rare. lol I had their Chicken Avocado Club with Sweet Potato fries and I was very happy. The chicken was tender, plenty of avocado + bacon and my fries were extra crispy without being burnt. Long overdue post. When we used to live in the Bay Area and dined at Black Bear spots - we didn't think to ever make it our favorite place nor a place to keep trying to go back for breakfast. So when we moved to Rocklin, we completely ignored going to Black Bear even though it's along the way wherever we go to and from our house. Big Bear in Rocklin serves menu unique to this location and they're amazing. Today, we had the Cajun Pasta and my husband had one of the best hamburgers he's had in Placer. Both didn't disappoint. Black Bear has already a big menu but apparently, they have seasonal specials and often, they are a must try. Rodrigo is the friendly manager that runs this location. One time, my friends and I were having brunch and he made sure, our drinks were filled and our needs were met. Another time, my husband wanted an omelet special made into a breakfast burrito and Rodrigo asked the chef to make this happen. His hospitality and attention to details is consistent in running this place. Even his crew loves him. I want to also commend Alyssa who's been twice my server and she's been nothing short of wonderful - whether it's peak or slow time. She works very hard and very respectful with customers' needs. The restaurant interior could use some carpet or floor updating or consistent clean up of crumbs, but I don't think it's fair to ding them stars for that since it gets busy on Sundays. The impeccable service and good food the customers they offer - should speak big time for why they should get more to come here. read more

Donny was hilarious & there was always a happy vibe. Logan, Ray, & Ray's dad, a supervisor, were also excellent. I asked where everyone was & received different answers from different people which is not a good sign when the stories can't be kept straight. Under the "New atmosphere", the server took my order then he did not come back. I saw him speaking with a female & they both went out the side door. A different server brought me my food & came back several times to assist me. The original server FINALLY came back inside & stood between the back counter & kitchen. He FINALLY came by my table, I obtained my check, paid & left. Now there is a bell by the front door to ring if you liked the service. Overall I would rate this place about 3.5 stars. The food was pretty good and came out fast. The only issue is that our waiter was unusually rude and acted annoyed while taking our order. He seemed okay otherwise but it felt very strange. The food was good and the quantity was filling. The place felt clean and decorated about the same as most Black Bear Diners. This place used to be a reliable, well-run restaurant. Sadly, those days are long gone. On my latest visit, I was immediately turned off by the lack of cleanliness--the first thing I touched was a sticky, grimy menu, which said everything I needed to know about the standards here. The staff showed no sense of customer service--disengaged, inattentive, and completely unprofessional. And then there's Raul, the manager. He looked disheveled, weathered, and out of breath, with a visible stain on his shirt, like he had just stumbled in from a long, rough night and hadn't taken a moment to pull himself together. Watching someone that unprepared try to lead a team was honestly uncomfortable. It's sad to see how far this place has fallen. What was once dependable is now just a neglected mess. There were not many diners during that early part of the day, mostly seniors or retirees LoL, as I was led to a booth by the young hostess, I was seated immediately. My visit was during midweek. I claimed my free birthday meal. The free birthday offer was for a breakfast entrée from their popular Bear's Choice which comes with 2 Eggs (any style) and...
