I enjoy Black Bear Diner. They have enough menu items. Most are good, some are OK. Pastries and milkshakes are good. Comfortable restaurant, I enjoy sitting in a booth. Service is good. Prices are more than a fast food restaurant, of course, especially with a tip. But it's worth it. Been to this location three times and have enjoyed it each time. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I know better than to come here, especially when I have to drive out of my way to get here. Uugghh you know when the bathroom isn't clean it makes you wonder what the kitchen is like. This is an open floor plan meaning the kitchen is in plain sight, and if you're lucky enough to sit at the counter like I was today you can hear EVERYTHING including the waitresses that were talking bout another co-worker who obviously wasn't part of the conversation. Nice size portions and lots of items on the menu to choose from. Today my pancake was gooey so I couldn't eat it. I didn't say anything because there was plenty to eat. Four of us met at the Black Bear Diner (Sandy location) on Friday to try the "all-you-can-eat" fish fry! What a delightful treat! You start with three large pieces of delicate fish in a crispy bread coating, not greasy at all. They came with a generous pile of french fries, tartar sauce and fry sauce, and freshly made coleslaw. What's not to love! Additional servings (second and third helpings in our case) were offered cheerfully. We had an attentive waitress who quickly catered to all our requests. Delicious helpings of peppermint chocolate cream pie and blackberry cobbler completed an outstanding meal. This restaurant tries so hard and has great, attentive staff. We love coming for breakfast. They have great kid meals and generous portions, great with coffee refills, and friendly service. They remember details like condiments, kid cups, plenty of napkins and aren't bothered when you have kiddos with you. Lots of parking. There was one night we came with a large party and even though they served us well, we could tell there was some drama with short staff and one staff person seemed to bad-mouth the restaurant and then walk out (maybe was fired?) It was confusing but they still gave us a good dinner even if it took awhile. There are weekend specials and we tried the pot roast and all-you-can-eat fish fry (which is just frozen patties, just keep in mind so you're not surprised, haha) but they are good and sometimes you just want comfort dining food. Got some pie and ice cream for dessert and that was a win. We might not return for dinner but love their breakfasts and hope to see them up and running with full staff again soon. read more

They lacked the country potatoes, claiming the truck hadn't come in, The hollandaise sauce was way too lemony, and the fruit not yet ripe. I've had breakfast here almost every morning during my trip and lunch here once. The food is delicious and the portions are large. Even the ones marked as "little less" are still quite large. My spouse and I started ordering just one breakfast to share and it's plenty of food. Thier biscuits are the largest I've ever seen! I'd recommend the steak and eggs, the chicken fried steak and eggs, and of the sausage or bacon and eggs, or the bear's choice with pancakes. My spouse tells me the chicken and waffles was good too. Don't get grits, they are the one thing to avoid as they are watery. Join the club that there's a QR code for at thr tabke and they'll email you a code for a free breakfast. (The email takes a while to arrive so plan to use that on a second visit.) The service is friendly and efficient. It's a chain of restaurants and I hope to visit somr of thr others. read more

It's Black Bear. Some things are better than others. We have one very close so go frequently for breakfast. We enjoy their breakfasts far more than the other meals. But we're southern so maybe their take on lunch and dinner is just different than we're used to. I was craving comfort food and had visited another Black Bear Diner recently that was very good. So I thought this would be a safe bet. Not so. Service was less than stellar-our server was uninterested and mostly absent and the food was just mediocre. We were there on a Friday around 4:30, not prime time. We waited 1hr for the staff to tell us they had to redo our order! We got seated in the back corner They took our order. We all ordered the same exact plate 2 eggs sausage, hash browns, and French toast. 4 orders of the same exact thing. 45mins go by and we ask about our order and the server looked confused. He then came back to tell us there was no sausage so we said we would go with bacon. 20mins later we noticed everyone around us get their food in which they all arrived after us. I do not particularly care for diner/greasy spoon sort of restaurants, and I really don't like chains, so you can imagine my displeasure at having dinner at Black Bear Diner. No, I'd never been there before, but I know what I like, thankyouverymuch. This was one of those occasions where I really needed to not be a picky pants, however, so here we were, and I kept my complaints to myself. We arrived around 5:30 or so, and there were just two other tables occupied. I imagine this is a happenin' spot for breakfast more than other meals, though more customers arrived as we were leaving. Speaking of breakfast, you can get it all day (lunch too)! Considering this, I went for the corned beef hash, switching out my fruit/potatoes option for seasonal veggies. The waitress didn't even bat an eye when I asked! Even if you don't get all crazy with special requests (as I have a tendency to), there are many ways to customize your meal: most come with toast/biscuit/pancakes along with the previously mentioned fruit/hash brown/diced potatoes. My husband ordered onion rings and a bacon cheeseburger salad. We waited probably fifteen minutes for our meals, which seems just about right. A large part of their shtick is generous portions, and this was definitely the case, particularly with both my husband's orders. My corned beef was surprisingly well done: not too salty, eggs cooked to medium perfection, and even the steamed vegetables were pretty decent (especially with the addition of the various house hot sauces at our table). The pancake, too, was surprisingly well done: mildly sweet and quite fluffy, served with real butter (even it was packaged). Of note, they have natural jams and jellies too. For dessert, there are pies, brownies, bread pudding, and a few other baked goods on display at the front. They didn't look all that exciting, but based on our meals I'd consider trying them next time. They also have milkshakes, malts, and sundaes. Funny story: there were some kids seated behind us, and one of them asked for a to-go box for their scoop of ice cream. Our same waitress again, didn't question it at all, just brought one over, much to the mother's embarrassed amusement. Our server checked on us just the right amount, kept waters and coffee filled, and was cheery. Prices are reasonable, and great considering portion size (seriously, my husband's salad was like some never-ending magic dish). This is a diner with a cabin in the woods kind of vibe. Lots of exposed wood and bear carvings outside, probably a hit with the kids. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a table around 11am on a Saturday. Once we were seated, our server appeared quickly to take our drink orders. Their menus are made to look like newspapers which I thought was cute and on brand for the place. An iced tea and cranberry juice later, we were ready to order. I got the tuna salad croissant with fries, and my partner got the chicken and waffle. The tuna salad was a large portion, with avocado, tomato and mayo on it. The fries were hot and crispy and the fry sauce was really good! While nothing really stood out about the meal it was good and I'd order it again. The chicken and waffle was okay but the waffle was average and my partner wasn't too crazy about the chicken breading. It's more crispy and almost reminded me of Panko crust (which I'm sure it's not) but it almost had a bit of a sweet aftertaste. Not bad but my partner just wasn't a fan. Just depends how you like your chicken. Overall, you get a lot of food for a reasonable price. Our service was quick and friendly and I'd return again, just nothing out of the ordinary. Update: Look, this is not a yuppie/wasp/dink type restaurant. This is a diner. Dont go here if you're in a hurry. The pace is like a small town diner. Is the wait-staff always 100% awesome? No. Don't eat here for that. Is it cheap? No, but it's a lot of food. I'll repeat: Eat here because the food is good, and the portions are HUUUUUGE. Either share a plate, take some home, or don't be a quitter and finish it. I'm not your mom. You want fancy/contemporary dining? Lots of other places for that. Stopped by for lunch/brunch the day after Christmas. They were short staffed, so we waited a few minutes for a table. All the servers and kitchen staff were hustling. Everyone was friendly and courteous. I'm sure they have been short staffed for some time, like other restaurants, because server/bussing stations were a bit of a mess. Disappointed! Ordered our food for pick up. We were told 20 minutes. Arrived in 20 minutes and was told it wasn't ready. Waited an additional 30 minutes. Finally got tired of waiting so I went up to ask about our food. I was told our food had been ready the whole time and had been sitting out for 30+ minutes at this point. My husband chose this place for lunch while waiting for truck repairs at the nearby discount tires. There is a Wendy's, McDonald's, Zaxby's, Costa Vida and a pizza restaurant close too. We shared a country fried steak meal that came with three eggs, fried potatoes and biscuits with gravy. It was still way too much food. Tasted fine though. The restaurant wasn't very full, but their policy apparently is to seat people as soon as they come through the door instead of helping people check out even if they've been waiting longer. Strange. The pancakes (pumpkin) and French toasts (stuff blackberry and cinnamon roll) were slightly undercooked but had good flavor. Service was good and got us through quick and was very attentive.
