We've come here for breakfast a few times, and love it! It reminds me of my hometown diner in cedar city, and even smells the same I am not the biggest breakfast fan so if possible I usually order steak and eggs. The last few places we've gone, the steaks have been very poor quality. This sirloin was amazing! And for $14?! Hell yea. Not chewy, and cooked just how I like it. My boyfriend was very pleased with his pancake and omelet. He didn't leave a single bite of food on his plate lol. We will be back! read more

I have eaten at MMC&C for the last four days. I am staying in a local motel while selling a house that three generations have lived in. It is a very sad occasion for my family. And I am the home cook. In a motel without a kitchen is a very hard way for me to be right now since I consider food love and I can't cook it right now (when my family most needs love.) But... I did the next best thing: I decided that MMC&C would be our home away from home until we settled in our new home. (Our Homestead was in Holladay. But now we're buying a retirement home in California. Palm Springs.) Some friends knew that this restaurant has deep roots in the area and the history and the food are extraordinary, so me and my clan started eating there while we get our stuff in and out of storage and prepared to hit the road. let me start off by saying I had the patty melt, and it was extraordinary as were the french fries. The first three meals were extraordinary: food and service all extraordinary. Then I get to Sunday lunch today. My waitress acted like she had something better to do than serve me even though it looked like I was her only table in the back room. So..... I actually wanted to see how long it would take her to ask me if I needed something. (What I needed was dessert. ) First of all, she never asked me if I was done eating in the first place. I was not. I knew I would need a few other items after I'd received my patty melt. When she brought my check to me without asking me if I was happy with service or needed anything, I said I needed another milk. She brought it added it onto the check and that's the last she wanted to talk to me forever apparently. She dropped the check with the milk. I decided to wait and find out how long it would take for her to ask me if I needed anything else and she NEVER did. She always had something more important to do than even meet my eyes. Finally 20 minutes after I finished my burger and wanted a piece of cheesecake. I called her over. She said she couldn't come. She sent another waitress. I asked the other waitress what the hell was going on and she refused to tell me. She said that the other waitress had food in the window so she couldn't come. I told her I've been timing the other waitress's inability to check on me and it had been 20 minutes. I asked whether the food had been sitting in the window for 20 minutes. Second waitress said obviously not. I guess they think that's an apology. It was not. No one ever apologized for that bitch deciding that I wasn't worth her time. I am a retired litigator, and a former Chicago bartender who always tips over 20%. I was also the only black person in the restaurant at the time. I can't help but wonder whether I was treated well when I was with my all-white family but when I came in black and alone, that's when they decided I was unworthy of any service. I left zero tip and I never leave zero tip. I will remember this forever as my worst service episode at any restaurant at any time. And I'm 59 years old and an international traveler so that's a lot of meals. OK, thanks. It probably has nothing to do with you. If you voted for Trump, you probably don't even care if they serve Black people well at your favorite restaurant. If I were rating food alone, i'd give them a four. So if you're white, you might have a really good time here. Even bring along some black friends. But if you're black, I do not recommend the experience. read more

was served the best chef Salad. Fresh crisp lettuce, loaded with sliced cheese.Sliced ham sliced turkey vegetables and blue cheese. When I walked in the smell of fries hit me and gave me a craving. So I ordered some fries. The fries are a meal within themselves. Next time I will try them with cheese and not get a salad. They served me a giant plate of fried yummy shoe string potatoes. What a mistake to stop by here! Raw, undercooked and diluted. Omelette with veggies and cheese was so plain and undercooked, cheese didn't have time to melt. And don't you ever get a coffee in this place, cause I think it's just colored boiled water. No flavor at all. The interior is old American style with a nice view on the main strip. Walking in to Midvale Mining is like a blast from the past. You get a decent meal at a reasonable price, which is why it has lasted as long as it has. You come here for a classic greasy spoon vibe, and because it's one of the few places that make Utah scones (frybread). The meal itself will be classic diner food, which isn't for everyone, but takes me back to my early 20s. I stopped by for dinner more recently. My chicken fried steak, was a little heavy on breading and gravy, but what I expected. But the real reason to stop is the fresh hot scone , dripping in honey butter. The staff is friendly and was good about checking on us. Generally I would recommend coming here for breakfast. And omelet, a scone, and diner coffee are a combination that will fight off a hangover. read more

It seems that I'm always on the hunt for someone else to make me breakfast on Sunday mornings-this past week was no exception. Over the years, I've experienced an erosion of interest in cooking for myself, and it comes to a peak on the weekends. Thank goodness for Midvale Mining Café-they saved me from being hungry. My wife and I visited around 9am-typically a busier time on a Sunday, but we were immediately seated. Service was pleasant-not over the top, but efficient. The building is bursting with history-not only is it old, and I'd venture to bet that most of the furnishings are original, but there are signs, plaques, newspaper clippings and other nostalgia all over the front lobby. I spent a few minutes reading about the past and would have loved more time to just browse. But I came here to eat. And eat, I did! The breakfast portions are generous-with the pancakes stealing the spotlight both in size and flavor. The bacon was cooked just right, and the eggs were...well, eggs. I heard the table next to me ordering the biscuits and gravy-a meal that I usually swoon for. But I didn't stay until their food was served, so I don't know how it looked. Seen this place for 20 years and finally decided to try it and I was not disappointed. It is a blue collar restaurant with a lot of history of the mining industry from way back when and to the mining days today. Very relaxing. The service is amazing, Brooke was our waitress and she was amazing was there with refills checking in on our table was polite and friendly. The food was very tasty and amazing, with lots of portions. You will not leave hungry, been there for breakfast and lunch and wow both times satisfied. Next will be dinner. Midvale Mining Cafe has been here for decades. They are one of the only restaurants I've seen who offer an Atkins Diet menu. Some version of Salmon is available at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The scones are excellent, and big. In fact, all their portions are quite generous. Two other observations: the service is -- well the food is good anyway. Just don't be in a hurry during busy times. And how the devil does one refer to red chili as "Chili Verde"? It's quite good, but not chili verde whatsoever. read more

I feel like a 3.5 star rating for this place is spot on. I've lived in the area for 9 years and have driven by MMC countless times. I finally got around to visiting with my husband this previous Sunday. The verdict? It was OK! We shared a honey butter scone and some biscuits and gravy. I do love me a Utah scone (fry bread, let's call it what it is), but this one was just OK. Did anyone ever try Johanna's before it exploded? I liked Johanna's scones. The biscuits and gravy were also just OK. The biscuits were dry, and the gravy got a little weird after a minute. I had the French Toast combo. Eggs and bacon are hard to do wrong, so those were fine. My French Toast was just OK. It wasn't very flavorful; I make better at home, honestly. My husband got the steak special. It was exactly what he wanted, cooked exactly as he wanted it. He was a happy camper. Our server was super nice and took good care of us. We came at prime time on a weekend and expected to wait a while, but it was only 15 minutes, just like they quoted. The interior is as you'd expect when you drive by outside. Outdated and old, but not dirty. The old newspaper prints on the wall were cool. I think if you're looking for a quick and affordable bite, with pretty standard food, MMC is probably a solid choice. But if I had the option, I'd probably rather go to Coachman's (RIP), Park Cafe, or Ruth's Diner. read more

Midvale Mining Cafe is nothing to write home about, when it comes to flavor, but it offers above average portion sizes at a decent price. Ingredients seem to be fresh, and our party's meal was served to the table really quickly, which was great. Don't expect a whole lot of attention from your server--ours stopped by once during the meal and once to deliver our check, but never came back to pick up the check, even though they said they would. I hate writing a bad review and rarely post them In the past I have rated this place as one of the best Breakfast spots in the Salt Lake valley. Sadly, today was a big letdown. Maybe it's because It was hyped up in my own head, but I can't recall a more disappointing breakfast. 1) the coffee is already not great, typical for a diner. However, it is made even worse with Coffee Mate being your only option for cream. Cream or Milk is not an option. 2) when I ordered I requested extra crispy hash browns. I was told "I will do my best". When I tell you there was no effort made I'm not kidding. They could not have been less crispy. On top of that they weren't hot, and had the look and feel of having been sitting for a while. 3) similar to the hash browns the sausage patty was only warm at best and had the dull look of a patty that had been sitting. My guess is that there is a big pan of pre-cooked patties in the back. One with hash browns, another with sausage. 4) the scone was doughy in parts. This is pretty common with scones.... Only mentioning as part of the review 5) lastly.... The eggs. Normally I would over look this, but since I'm taking the time to write..... you guessed it, egg shells in 2 different bites. Not a lot in either, but there. And on top of that one of the two over easy eggs was more of a medium as the yoke had broke. Again this is minor to me. My biggest complaint is the milk/cream selection for the coffee, or the lack thereof. And the hash browns being old with no attempt to be made crispy. 2 eggs over easy, Hash browns, sausage patty, and scone. With a coffee. $16.45 Service was good. Staff was nice. I tried out the pork chop entree that came with a side of green beans and fresh cut fries. The entree option comes with your choice of salad or soup. The soup of the day was navy bean and ham, but I opted for a salad with ranch dressing instead. Recommendation to not use pre-mixed salad. A simple change with fresh cut romaine greens, cherry tomato, and julienned carrot sticks can help spruce up the salad. I liked how the side salad came with a scoop of macaroni salad but I'm not sure if this is needed since it's pretty filling for the customer. Uncessary additional cost for the restaurant. Might be helpful to save some money for business owners by not including the pre-mixed macaroni salad and spend a little extra time and money on the fresh greens instead. The pork chop itself was quite tender and delicious. The overcooked canned green beans was unappetizing and reminded me of my days when when I was eating lunch in elementary school. The green beans would be typically left uneaten. Don't get me wrong, I love veggies but not when it's over cooked and bland. Recommendation to explore other methods of cooking styles like utilizing their grill to cook up zucchini, squash, corn, or carrots. Grilled or oven roasted veggies can bring in more flavor and freshness. The fries were a little overcooked and the Utah scone was comforting but very heavy and dense. The staff was friendly and provided excellent service. Our server was even joking around with us and was very attentive. Keep up the great customer service. The decor and furnishing is outdated but charming with plenty of Midvale city-based memorabilia. Some of the light fixtures and corners of the restaurant have visible cobwebs and semi-thick layers of dust. Recommendation to refresh the placement of the decor and deep clean the restaurant. Great place for some good diner food. I eat here fairly often and the food is consistent and the service is friendly and attentive. It is your classic diner, very casual and usually a lot of the "regulars" are in attendance. Their hamburgers are very good the kind you'd make at home and if there were a French fry Olympics this place would take gold with their double fried crispy and creamy fries. There is always a special available for breakfast lunch or dinner. It has great access to and from the freeway (I-15). read more

We went at a time which wouldn't accurately reflect a busy, breakfast-rush environment. It was plenty busy but I think the late hour affected the food quality, which I will explain below. I think it's an important consideration. The restaurant is in an older neighborhood with limited parking next to a "Discovery Inn" motel. In my opinion, the area is a bit...undesirable. I didn't feel very comfortable outside the restaurant. The cafe has retained its themed decor and atmosphere over time, which was lots of mining memorabilia such as pickaxes, shovels, fun signs, and other curiosities. The dining area has booths, tables, and breakfast bar that keeps its vintage experience alive. It is -very- casual. We were seated immediately. We ordered the chicken fingers, steak and eggs, and breaded pork chops with a scone and honey butter as a side. We also ordered coffee. Just an FYI, the restaurant only has diet Coke as a choice for low or no-calorie sodas. The chicken fingers came out so fast I that figured that most of it was already prepared. The freshest part of the meal was the chicken fingers while the fries were old and the corn was cool. They were pretty standard fare fingers; nothing particularly special but my son was happy with them. The steak and eggs were a cut above. The steak was tasty and not overcooked, which was a pleasant surprise. We usually end up with drier, well-done steaks when ordered for breakfast in other diners, such as Black Bear or Denny's. The eggs were over medium and as expected. The breaded pork chops were hot and thick, but tough, while the hash browns, toast, and scrambled eggs were cool. The hash browns were especially disappointing as they were fried but left to sit so that even the crunchy parts were soft. The eggs had that sort of powdery texture that I sometimes experience at buffets or large catered events, rather than the out-of-the-carton type or even -fresh- eggs. It seemed to me that everything was pre-cooked and sitting except for the fried foods and the steak. Again, maybe this is a consequence of it having been past the breakfast rush, but this is still pretty unacceptable. The best part of the meal was the "scones", which are not scones at all, but a lovely fried bread that is very much like a donut, minus the glaze (and are pretty large!). They are really yummy! They were delicious with the weird, bottled honey butter mixture, but these would be awesome with chocolate drizzle, ice cream, whipped cream, fruit, you name it. These are really good. You can order these in batches at the diner and pick them up separately from a meal. These will make someone happy, trust me. The visit overall was disappointing, except for the scones. We won't go back for the food, but I do plan on ordering some scones for my son's next birthday party. **For my ASD (autism spectrum) families and friends** The noise level was high in the diner, especially with high-pitched clanking of silverware and plates. I thought I had reviewed these guys before. Go in here in the morning or on a weekend. You'll see Midvale denizens doing what they do and have always done. It's actually fascinating because the place is a local institution, and when you walk in, you become part of it. Good food, generous portions, consistent quality. It's not a Michelin restaurant. I love old school diners and definitely don't need everywhere I eat to be a killer atmosphere or unique, but this place was just plain dirty. We had to request our table be wiped off again and there was still crap on it. That being said, our waitress was fast and friendly. They have a lunch and dinner menu too but we came for breakfast. My girlfriend and I both got the pancake combo (two pancakes, bacon and two eggs) and weren't very impressed with the taste and quality of the food. You do get large portions though, I usually get my girlfriend's bacon too and I had a HUGE pile. Others in our group got the French toast, hash browns and toast and were impressed.
