Black Bear Diner is a chain restaurant with typical diner food. The menu is a newspaper with many breakfast, lunch and dinner choices. Breakfast seems to be most popular as it does seem busier in the mornings. They do serve breakfast all day but I do not recommend the bisquits and gravy later in the day. I suspect they are reheated which does not fair well. We ordered a meatlovers omelet for dinner with the bisquits and gravy. The bisquit was hard, probably from reheating it too long in the microwave (just a thought). We also ordered the rueben sandwich with french fries. The sandwich was decent the fries hot and crispy. First off - we like the breakfast... but we decided to come for dinner. I ordered the meatloaf- and it was AWFUL. slice so thin (1/8 of an inch) had no texture to it or taste. The fillings were gross as well. My GF had the club sandwich- barely any meat and it too was tasteless. We will never get any food from there except for Bfast (but don't get the biscuit and gravy either- tasteless like the cornbread that came with dinner). They were short handed as all restaurants are now days. The food was good. The trademark biscuit was one of the biggest that we have seen, and good. Joyce our server was very good, and ontherun. We got in before the breakfast rush. One of the better BBDs that we have visited. My wife and I recently visited on our way through town. 4 years since our last visit, it appears they still operate short staffed. A short wait for the server to take our drink order. Then off to the next table when he could have taken our food order. To which we waited about 5-10 minutes for him to return to take our food order. It was taking at least 20-30 for the food to come out from the kitchen. It was interesting watching the manager clear all of the food orders off the monitor when there were about 10 tags hanging. Yes when service is slow it gives people time to watch to wonder while the service is slow and observe what is happening. I've heard of Black Bear Diner and wanted to give it a try. I was getting my car serviced at Frontier Toyota you know how that goes so I had some time to kill and decided to stop in for breakfast. Gail seated me and took care of me. She was great at multitasking and stayed attentive throughout. I ordered the bacon avocado Benedict with thick-cut hash browns. The presentation was great, and the poached eggs were perfectly runny (which is a big plus some places really miss the mark on that). The hash browns were super crispy, just how I like them. Today we came in and had such awesome service and a fun conversation with a server named Aj. He was extremely attentive and it's nice to get someone who shows true hospitality and warmth. I got today's special which was the prime scramble (scrambled eggs with BEEF ribs) which tasted great. And is also so hard to find a place with beef ribs instead of pork ribs. Came with two sides the biscuit and gravy and the sweet potato fries. My friend got the breakfast chorizo burrito, it honestly looked soooo good but I'm not fan of burritos but it just looked huge and said it was delicious. The white cheddar Mac and cheese however was so normal and I'd just prefer the normal traditional yellow Mac and cheese imo. We got the chocolate cream pie AND omgggggg that was sooooooooo delicious! I'd just go there to get that next time.(sorry if the pie was half eaten lol that how good it was. I remembered to take the picture when it was almost done hahahaha) The service was very awesome and attentive with all of our requests, thank you so much irelanda (I believe that was her name, I apologize if I miss wrote it) drink refills she was in it. I've been going to Black Bear for years, usually the one on the other side of the grapevine in Arvin but we decided it had been quite a while and stopped in here. It was very quiet and not busy at all and we were sat immediately. Our food took some time, and I'm sure some people would have complained because we were like the 3rd and 4th people dining in that day, but people should realize they cook their food to order. Obviously there's random prepped ingredients but 95% of the items have to be made to order. The upside is that it will be fresh, but the downside might be that it isn't the fastest in the restaurant game especially if it's a busy weekend morning. Personally the portion sizing and great value as far as pricing goes are what brings me time and time again, but the fact that it's actually really good food is a major bonus! We were seated way in the back. Overall the staff did ok, but it felt like they were under-staffed for sure. The food was not particularly hot, but was timely. As usual, the portions were huge and lots of left overs. We have had better experiences there, but overall we will return as we know some times not everything can be 5 stars. We had a union meeting there for the Mail Handers of Santa Clarita P&DC. This was our second time and both times were top notch. There is a separate room that seats 40 people.
