[[HIGHLIGHT]]At Backyard, you are getting a bit of an outpost experience with a family atmosphere and ambience.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When you walk in, the staff are genuinely friendly. Super-rushed but helpful. The service is prompt and there is seating available if you try to make it in before 5:30 or so without reservations outside of ski season. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love the interior. There is a lot of bear-with-Oakley-sunglasses branding - their logo icon - all over the walls as well as snowboards and bicycles. The lighting is a cluster of paper lanterns, and then as you look out of the door onto the patio, there are these gorgeous string lights.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The bar also looks inviting. It serves - among other drafts - Von Trappe, Zero Gravity and Fiddlehead. They were out of a seasonal 14th Star Maple Pumpkin Ale on draft when we ordered. The thing that Backyard does well here is serve up orders of tater tots. They are crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. I almost wonder if there isn't something else inside of them because they are so delicious. They come with a sweet honey mustard that has a nice kick. There is also another tater tot option. The TOTCHOS are an inventive appetizer. They are the same crispy fried tots topped with house meat (not sure which), cheese sauce, pico de gallo, Heddy Topper Double IPA pickled jalapeños, cabbage, sour cream and scallions. We asked what the most popular items on the menu was and the waiter said it was the Local Burger. He didn't say, "our burgers." Instead, he named the, "Local Burger," answering the question I asked. He also said a particular type of taco was the second most popular. Out of the 4 kinds of tacos available he said the fish tacos are the most popular outside of the Local Burger. Those are the two most popular items so that is what we got. So we ordered the Local Burger. It's a double smashed beef patty with Cabot Cheddar Cheese, apple bacon jam, maple cream and arugula. I found the burger to be underwhelming and the beef had a kind of recently-taken-from-the-freezer flavor to it. The aftertaste of the burger overpowered the other ingredients, including the arugula. We also had the pickled jalapeños on the side with our burger and they are pickled with the Heddy Topper Double IPA from the neighboring Alchemist brewery. The jalapeño peppers were, again, so-so. I didn't taste any Heddy Topper notes, but they are they are strong and notably pickled. The fish taco comes with a power slaw with pico de gallo lemon and 'Yard sauce with a beer-battered fried white fish. My first bites were bland overall, but much more flavorful when I reheated them. I did enjoy the slaw on the bottom of the fish tacos. That was flavorful, crunchy and sweet. And I even tasted a bit of tiny shredded celery which i liked. I'm very curious to try the fried Brussel Sprout tacos with flash fried brussels sprouts, 'Yard Sauce, Cotija and street corn salsa. I feel like they would've been really delicious. Something else that I think I would recommend folks try - if they like duck - is the duck wonton. It is bacon, charred, sweet corn and cream cheese wrapped in fried wontons and served with a sticky dipping sauce that looks fascinating to me. The Ruby Mule drink was so good and i liked the immediate first few sips. It is crafted with Pama liqueur. I looked it up: PAMA is pomegranate liqueur from Bardstown, Kentucky. The cocktail starts with vodka, PAMA, house-made cranberry simple syrup, lime juice and Gosling's ginger beer. Unless you enjoy flavored vodkas, I would recommend that you order the Ruby Mule with an unflavored vodka not a flavored cranberry vodka. It may taste more pure. I actually ordered a shot of vodka, after commenting that I didn't really taste the vodka in the drink. When I got the shot of vodka it was also cranberry, and as the bartender said, the flavored vodka really masks the vodka taste (I am looking for). For dessert, we ordered the mini peanut butter explosion cake. It's a combination of fudge brownies, smooth peanut butter, mousse and chocolate cake topped with peanut butter chips. I thought that if we ordered this, it would be something that could not be basic and that is true. It is very sweet, however. It is deliciously rich and fudgey. Another reason I say that Backyard has an outpost atmosphere is because they do not serve coffee or ice cream. But you can have an espresso martini. Friendly service, excellent food, casual and laid back vibe. We loved our visit here so much that we did back-to-back meals here. If I could have given this zero stars I would have. First, it took longer than normal to get drinks. Someone dropped off our appetizer, and I had to ask for plates. Then after a while our entrees came, even though our sever never checked on us once. Only 3 out of 4 entrees were brought out. We had dinner on Monday night. I can't say enough good things about this place. They're famous for their tater tots, which, topped with pulled pork, are to die for! The Brussels sprouts are cooked to perfection. Also tasted the smash burger and their tacos and they were all perfection. The vibe was just electric. It was crowded - good for them - but we could also hear each other. Our server was terrific (I think his name was Adam W. ) and explained that service might be a bit slow due to the influx of "eclipse" customers (like us) and yet, they delivered. Apparently it was a "smoke break." Because when he came back he REEKED of cigarettes, like from across the bar. Gross. Not okay. This isn't actually the 70s... Ever go out and eat something that was so bad it makes you angry? Like you're still angry about it days later?? May I introduce you to the so-called "Nachos" served at Backyard. I cannot remember a time I ever encountered something so bad in a restaurant that I not only didn't eat it, I told the staff how bad it was. That happened with the "Nachos" at Backyard. And we should be clear that they weren't executed incorrectly. What they served was precisely what they sell as "Nachos" at Backyard: a base of tortilla chips topped with lettuce, a small amount of basically flavorless pico de Gallo (it didn't occur to me that restaurants are out there serving premade/scooped out of a jar pico #eyeroll), jalapeños they claim to be pickling in house (honestly? I think all they have out back is a freezer, a deep fryer and a prep unit...but they could have taken a jar of jalapeños and added some beer, coulda happened) and what they claim is a "cheese sauce" and sour cream. The "cheese sauce/sour cream" is really what tasted like some sort of Ranch Dressing. With the same consistency and temperature you would expect from a squirt bottle of Ranch taken directly out of the fridge. Get that? The entire thing was not even "room temp." It was FREEZING. Nothing hot. No melted cheese. They doused chips, lettuce, some crappy pico and jalapeños in freezing cold salad dressing. Horrendously awful. Someone should be in prison for the affront to Nachos that is being perpetrated on the daily at Backyard. So. Bad. Also though? NOT NACHOS. Salad on top of tortilla chips is NOT NACHOS. So Bad I'm still angry about the damn things. And that's partly because I LOVE nachos. All sorts of nachos and I was excited for nachos. I then ordered the "Tachos." And yes, I know, I'm the idiot here. Because this was the same, exact thing, only even less toppings. But the base this time was Tater Tots. So at least something was warm? Genius idea: Tater Tot Nachos. ABYSMAL execution. 2.5 out of 5. I tried the Deep Fried Black Bean Ravioli app. Acceptable bar food/app: frozen ravioli that they threw in a fryer and topped with the premade tasteless pico. 3 out of 5. I got a Caesar Salad. It was fine. Sadly, by this time my spirit was broken and I couldn't even bring myself to finish a salad. Which basically has never happened in my life. 3.5 out of 5. But I was DEFINITELY going to review Backyard! So I ordered the beer battered fish tacos to give them a shot at a main course. And these were the best item I tried. You get 3, so portions are generous. But again, these were pre frozen fish filets fried to order. Which could definitely be good. These are solidly mediocre. We are visiting Stowe and during the rainy weather my husband went out to pickup some takeout. The staff was super friendly and fast. We ordered: the Caesar salad, Carne Asada tacos, the Local Burger, and the popcorn chicken. Caesar Salad: pretty good, just a little too much dressing, but still very tasty. The Local Burger: Good and the sweet potato fries that came with were even better. The Popcorn Chicken: felt a bit undercooked, but had good flavor. The Carne Asada Tacos: these definitely do not travel well. The sauce on the meat made them pretty soggy. The meat was pretty bland, more salt or seasoning of the mean would've helped a lot. Synopsis: The food is great. The drinks are better. The staff is the best. Full review: My wife and I ended up here twice during our romantic weekend getaway. When we rolled into town I wanted to watch the football game before checking into our B&B. The place we are staying recommended 3 places. We went to the one out of the 3 that my wife likes the most. But there was at least an hour wait, the bar was full, and the staff didn't seem very accommodating. To be fair, they appeared overwhelmed, given the lack of finding decent help, it is understandable. Across the street was third place on the recommendations list, Backyard. The parking lot is a little bit off of the main street and seems a little sketchy. Do not let that deter you. There was a wait for a table here too, but we were able to score a couple of seats at the bar. They have a nice, lengthy bar, so it is not difficult to snag a couple of seats. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The bar was where it was at. We were wearing our Patriots attire and they put the game on the TV in front of us without us asking[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Our bartender/server, Mikaela(sp?), was outstanding. My wife ordered one of the drink specials, a pumpkin spice espresso martini. The amount of care Mikaela used was commendable. Shaking up the drink to make a nice froth and working the microplane to get a generous amount of nutmeg on top of the froth. It wasn't just for our benefit. We saw her make these for a number of other patrons and she used the same amount of vigor and attention to detail. For food we ordered duck wontons, buffalo popcorn chicken, and tots. It all came out fast and fresh. The duck wontons were tasty . Creamy, nice duck flavor. Can't go wrong with tots. Hot, fresh, and delicious. The star of the show was the popcorn chicken. Super fresh, it seemed like they were marinated in buttermilk before being coated and fried. The buffalo sauce and blue cheese was on the side, so you had total control over how much you wanted on each bite. I had several just plain they were so good on their own. They have a great variety of beer on tap, plus a good selection of canned beer/local cider. The specialty cocktails we tried were fantastic. We saw several margaritas going out. Apparently, they make their own sour mix. Mulled cider behind the bar smelled heavenly. Jake, was managing the whole operation. Running around like crazy making sure everyone had what they needed.
