I keep forgetting that this gem is here! The Publix on Jacaranda and Venice Av is my primary supermarket. And I could be getting a cup of coffee every time I go there, But - the entrance to Publix is on Jacaranda, and Black Gold is around the corner on Venice Av so I forget it is there - - - I will have to place a yellow sticky reminder on my forehead. Why? Because this place is phenomenal. The coffee is true coffee. The kind where you don't need to add anything to it. The food is fresh, fresh, fresh. The bagels are true NY bagels. For lunch, I love their mushroom soup - even though it was hot outside. So flavorful. So now when I walk-in with the yellow sticky on my forehead, you will know why. read more

This is a very good cafe if you are in Venice FL. I tried ther cappuccino, macchiato, and green tea. They do them well. The coffee roast they use is not over-bitter like on so many other places. Baristas are friendly. Choice for ceramic cups. They have even something like a small picture gallery inside. I recommend coming here instead of overpriced touristic places down closer to the beach and closer to the fumes of all the cars. read more

I ordered an iced latte and when I got it hot I went up and asked for it to be fixed if possible, they asked me if when the cashier repeated the order to me if it sounded correct and I said yes when she repeated it it sounded correct but then I received it hot and the barista said that she won't remake it but she will put it over ice for me and then filled it with more milk to the point you can't taste any espresso. When I got it back iced it had little flavor and was lukewarm. I understand they were busy but not remaking and then saying I was wrong seems to not be the way you treat customers. Their Tolima, Colombia varieties (El Eden & El Vergel) have been my favorite thus far - amongst their other exceptional selections (costa rican perla negra micro-lot, las lajas micro lot , Ethiopian wenago, etc.) Their muffins or zucchini bread are a must on every order. When you talk to the owner Gary, the passion is omnipresent - whether he's teaching you about their coffee/roasting process, offering suggestions on what varieties to try next, or discussing how to optimize cold extraction steeping for at-home cold brews. Staff is friendly and grinds beans to match your coffee maker at home. When you have access to high quality shops like Black Gold, it amazes me why anyone would spend the same amount of money on burnt beans from a coffee chain -- instead of making the easy decision to support local. read more

The owners are RUDE and when I tried to tip and the baristas informed me that they DO NOT RECEIVE any of the TIPS that customers leave!! Tried both mild and strong coffee, black. Definitely exceptional coffee. I would have added a muffin, but they all looked too dark (overcooked). We have been going here since they opened, we always get the bagels and bring them home to eat, never had a problem until this morning. We know you can't eat the bagels until they are toasted, but we like to eat them at home. We go today and they will not sell them to us unless they are toasted. I don't want them toasted at the store cause by the time you get them home they are cold. So today will mark the last time we visit, we will have to find another place to buy our bagels. read more

A follow up: I posted my original review on my way out of the shop. A few moments later a guy - who I assume is an owner/manager - pursues me out into the parking lot with two other male employees, interrupts my phone call, and demands to know why I gave them a bad review. I replied that I felt my reasons were clear in what I wrote; their aggressive attitude toward me wanting to take a photo, being barked at and called out in front of the whole restaurant made me feel unwelcome. Furthermore, three men pursuing me and menacingly demanding an explanation for a bad Yelp review is basically doubling down on a bad customer experience. He then bursts into a tirade about "...you people," "...go back to NY," "...hope you don't get into a [motorcycle] accident on your way home." He then finished by walking around behind my motorcycle, taking a picture of my license plate and then threatens that I'll be hearing from his lawyer (for who knows what). Simply unbelievable. If you take a moment to read through the reviews here, you'll notice most of the negative ones were only the result of off-putting service experiences (and bizarrely enough, this draconian 'no photos' silliness). Look, this shop has a lot of good things going on for it. They roast their own beans in-house which you rarely ever see, interior is well designed and they feature works for sale by local artists. Some of us would like to share what a cool time we had in this one-of-a-kind, locally owned and operated coffee shop with our friends on Instagram, Facebook, Foursquare, Yelp or wherever. Instead, here we are, writing about this. I can only imagine that it must be difficult competing with large enterprise franchises, but I can tell you this: fighting your customers is NOT the way to fight Starbucks. read more

Food is good coffee is great. I was just here a couple days ago for the first time. Had a really good experience. Decided to bring my family with me this time. Ordered a bunch of food and drinks. One of the drinks turned out to be to too sweet and I asked if they could redo it. To my surprise they told me they can redo it but would have to charge me for another drink. I think that's the first time I've ever heard that. Everyone in my party was shocked, immediate response was we're probably not coming back here again just because of the customer service. It's a bummer, really ruined the experience. It's a coffee place, we came in and dropped a 50 on their coffee...I'm sure anyone else would be happy to redo one latte just to make a happy customer. I just traveled Europe for 6 months and think that Black Gold Coffee Roasters has the BEST coffee. My husband and I visited 16 different countries - Italy twice - and toured the Jura World of Coffee in Switzerland. I truthfully think that this is literally the best in the world that I can find. read more
