It's our second time to Black Pork, but this time we went to try their LB food scene week specials. I remember my first time trying out this place was really good too, although maybe at that time I ordered too much of fried and fatty stuff haha so it felt heavy. This time we ordered the specials which come with empanada (potatoes and chorizo), mussels in some sort of "curry" like sauce, and and braised short rib with rice (you can also choose mashed potatoes instead of rice). You order at the counter, so we pay ahead. The verdict: wow. Everything was just wow. Such a great combination of food, I shared it with my bf and the whole thing was $31 before tax and tip. It was so good. The empanada was probably one of the best one in the city (the only contender is selva's empanada), the mussels were so good and the sauce too. Short rib with rice was amazing. It has more fat than meat lol but still really delicious. We brought our dog and they have a front patio with high chairs. It was a nice day so it worked out perfectly. The neighborhood is a little "sketchy" to me, this restaurant is literally surrounded by dive bars. I would imagine if they were located in downtown or 4th st, or Belmont then it would be so packed. But then maybe it would be even way more expensive. The price right now is great for what you get. Go try this place if you appreciate tasty food! read more

WOW!!! What an amazing little gem. This little tiny hole in the wall, literally makes some of the best freaking clam chowder I have ever had. It has a smokiness and umami to it that I have never experienced in a clam chowder, and it is FANTASTIC!!! Then I had one mushroom taco, one pork belly taco, and an empanada (I couldn't eat the empanada come out because I was too full from everything else). The pork belly was cooked perfect. Fell apart in my mouth with just a fantastic flavor and texture, and the mushroom tacos were so on point. Not to mention the service here. Veronica was absolutely delightful. So much flavor! I had two pork belly tacos, one mushroom taco, and one shrimp taco. If you're hungry then four was the perfect amount since they're small. My favorite was the shrimp followed by the pork. The shrimp were cooked to perfection and sitting on a bed of cheese which I didn't expect. The spicy mango salsa complimented it perfectly. They also provided an amazing green salsa too but I used it sparingly not wanting to cover up the flavors. If you're a shrimp fan these tacos are a must. Since pork is in their name I had to get the pork belly. The meat was melt in your mouth tender and delicious but the skin was really hard to bite through. I used a knife to cut it up which helped. I wish it had more of a chicharron texture but I still loved them. The mushroom one was my least favorite. It was good but not much flavor. The green salsa came in handy for that taco. To drink I tried the "guava and spices" iced tea. She made this to order and I was blown away by the flavors. Service was friendly and the restaurant had counter, tables, and patio seating. Parking is nonexistent. Zero parking at 10:45am. Had to park in a residential area around the corner. I truly loved the food and will definitely be back. We went during LBFSW and got the 3 course meal. We all picked the Clam Chowder and it was really delicious. I had the Chorizo Empanada which came with 2 yummy sauces. Again - delicious. The Entree was a short Rib with mashed potatoes. Beef was incredibly tender. Food was 5 stars. Service was also great. Order at counter and food was brought to us. Black Pork is a culinary gem! Been there twice. Tucked between two bars. You're greeted by owner Veronica who will take your order. We started with the mussels in white wine curry lemongrass, cream sauce. Mussels tender, sauce to die for. Deep flavorful light and rich at the same time. Served with toasted baguette. Good t'ill the last bite. Empanada filled with spiced pork, slightly crispy crust, delicious salsas. Wanted another. Cuban lunch sandwich. Marinated pulled pork slightly smoky, country ham, pickles, mustard arugula aioli. The combination was spot on delicious. I need that pork recipe. Chef Luis classical training in Mexico and Spain deftly showcases his culinary talents. It's amazing what he can do with humble ingredients to generate a taste experience worth loads more than the fare he charges. I want this couple to move their restaurant to my side of town. I finally tried Black Pork yesterday for lunch with my friend. The whole experience was wonderful. We had the guacamole with puerco, an Asada taco, a chicken empanada, a black salad and a beet salad. That would've been enough by itself, but I also got a cheeseburger with mashed potatoes. All of the food was fantastic. I also had a latte which was very good as well. The owners, Veronica and Luis, could not have been nicer. I originally wanted to try the spinach salad, but they were short on ingredients. Luis made a tiny spinach salad for me so I could taste it. It had caramelized pears and cranberries, and a delicious dressing. I will let the photos of the food speak for themselves. At the end of the meal, Veronica brought us each empanada. Not what you would expect for the location. I was looking up burgers in Long Beach when I came upon Black Pork. I actually didn't even look at where it was located, and I assumed it was closer to the dtlb area. I wanted to try the burger with the black bun, but there were out of the bread and were currently making some more. Instead, I tried the chicken sandwich, and it was so good. First of all, it's HUGE. And gorgeous. It's truly Instagram worthy. That and the fries in the gold bowl. They really have their presentation down. I wasn't even that hungry, but I ended up eating every last bit of it. Black Pork is a small spot hard to get to with no real parking. The lady taking our order was not the most friendly. We ordered a burger and fries over $12 is too expensive for a whole in the wall. The water available is tap water- I never drink the complimentary water given but here it is diy and not iced. So warm water... my biggest reason for 3 stars is prices. It cost over $8 dollars for a small bowl of clam chowder with already placed crackers inside. Because the service wasn't warm I felt odd asking for more crackers or hot sauce. Ordering is simple and service feels like you're getting a home cooked meal. Made a trip back to the LA area in 2026 and came here with much anticipation after first trying it in 2025. STILL AMAZING! Not a typical Mexican restaurant I understand that the chef trained in Madrid and mixes several latin styles. This was my first time at Black Pork (I've been wanting to go for a while) and finally got to try them out during Long Beach Food Scene Week. They had an affordable three course meal that really gives you the chance to experience their food & service. If you've never been (like me), you order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. I arrived around 5:30 for a later lunch/early dinner and by about 10-15 minutes later all the indoor tables were full. I tried the mango & spice iced tea and fell in love. That's saying something because I usually don't like flavored iced tea but this one doesn't fall into the pitfalls so many do. It wasn't overly sweet and didn't have that fake fruit flavor to it. Whatever the "spice" was also added a nice depth to the flavor. I honestly started googling mango spiced ice tea at my table to see if I could find a recipe to recreate this at home. The mussel starter was quite good. I found them a little overly salted but not to the point where it impinged upon my enjoyment of them. Empanada: The outside was perfectly crisp and bubbly without tasting/feeling oily. I had the chicken and liked both of the sauces with it. Korean BBQ & Mashed Potatoes: So good. The person at the table next to me was complaining to his dining companion that the mashed potatoes weren't smooth but I enjoy a good chunky mashed potato and these were so flavorful. The food here was incredible. Great flavor, quality, and presentation while being affordable. We had the beet salad, mussels, pork belly skewers with mashed potatoes, and criollo shrimp. My favorite was the criollo shrimp and beet salad but they were all hits. The establishment is small and casual which is in itself an appeal since you can enjoy a high class meal in flip flops. It's an order at the counter set up but they bring out the food to you. The woman (I believe she is the owner) who took our order was SO patient, helpful, and attentive. I can't even begin to explain how delicious the food is here! Every taco has a different flavor profile, and each one is like a work of art--unique to itself and full of flavor! You have to try them all to find your favorite. Mine is the shrimp! The combination of ingredients in their salads are also so perfectly balanced, I don't think I've had a better and more filling salad anywhere! I highly recommend the beet salad. They were all flavorful but my favorite were the pork and papas con chorizo. Then the sauces they give you to go along are just chefs kiss! I previously dined in with my husband during LBFS week and I still haven't gotten over the curry mussels, so tasty and full of flavor! My best friend and weekly lunch buddy was very excited to bring me here for lunch on Wednesday. He raved about the food, particularly the chowder, and the Cuban sandwich. This is not in the best neighborhood in Long Beach. It is not a fancy-pants kind of place. The bar next door was being pressure washed inside and out when we slid by to the front door of Black Pork! The menu was intriguing, the beef sandwich grabbed my attention at once. The gal behind the counter was very nice about explaining the options. The steak sandwich which I had ordered, turned out to be fantastic. The steak was perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned perfectly presented and I ate every single bite. The French fries were exceptional! Very crispy, hot fresh seasoned, even crave-able. I am still remembering them 5 days later, they were that good! My friend got the chowder, he let me try it and it was 10 out of 10! So creamy, filled with yummy clams, potatoes, and dreams! You Must get the chowder! Black Pork is a small restaurant that is located on the side of a busy street in West Long Beach. Yelpers brought me here with their photos and reviews flaunting the stellar portions of meat. The value for the meat is pretty fair. For today's visit I had the Guacamole con Puerco ($12.50). The guacamole is nicely balanced with citrus, onions, and serranos. I like that it's topped with pork rinds and thin pork belly. I did have more guac than I could eat with the toppings - I ate my leftovers with my entree. I should have bought some extra tortilla chips for $2.50, but it was not recommended to me as an option. For the main course, I went with their pork belly skewers ($17.50). You can't tell in the pictures, but the pork belly servings are MASSIVE. I chose it with mashed potatoes on the side. The pork is cooked nicely; however, I should have ordered it with rice to balance out the fattiness of the pork. I purchased a side of rice and brought my leftovers home to eat it this way for lunch. I didn't see their specials listed inside the restaurant, but I saw another patron eating a huge steak. When I looked at their website, I saw it listed online as a special. Their steaks look impressively huge, and I would have considered it if I knew that they were serving it. I really like the meats that are offered here. I think sandwiches and apps sound tasty/balanced here and it's probably the best way to eat their delicious meats. I think their entree-sized meats are generous, but I think that they could be better balanced with acid/spice/carbs/herbs to elevate it to a five-star level. I also wish I could have had a beer, but my mexican coke was fine! Other yelpers are correct: it's not the best neighborhood and you'll have to find street parking. It's counter service. You order as you enter, and they deliver your plates to your table. You could also order online for pickup orders. The restaurant is small and there are about 5-6 tables and bar seating. Overall, I think that is a small business that's worth supporting! Next time I come by here, I'll probably get some of their sandwiches to go! Black Pork is a hidden gem that is helmed by Luis and Vero, two of the kindest, most welcoming, most generous and most talented people I have ever met. I still remember the very first time we went there. We heard about this new, tiny place with really great food. So one Friday, we went in and ordered food to go. We started chatting with them, and were made to feel so comfortable and welcome that we decided to order appetizers while waiting for our Korean BBQ and pork belly. We had their mussels, crispy seafood and empanadas. All were stellar, and served in such great portions that we left full and happy knowing we had Saturday brunch in the (literal) bag. Fast forward through months of us going back with friends and family in tow, many, many times. Every single time, anyone and everyone we brought there were wowed. From their beautifully crafted (and massive) burgers and exceptional fries to the best Cubano sandwich (per Brentwood food snob relative), to the impressive salads, to the chowder, to their famous puerco con guacamole, to the most magnificently decadent yet balanced French toast and smoothies (the healthy green ones assuage my pork overload guilt often) ... everything is chef's kiss worthy. All from just two people ... they are the front and back of house, the cook, the dishwasher, the barista, the cashier and the cleanup crew. They were crispy and jam packed with meat and sabor! We also had their bbq ribs and pork belly skewers with mashed potatoes. The mashers were beautiful! I am not sure what is in them, but we fought on who was getting the last scoop. The pork belly skewers were generous in size and flavor. Food After the absolutely stellar word of mouth from this place, including an Eater article in the works, I had high expectations and wanted to try a handful of options. Everything started off strong but had diminishing returns. Mango Passionfruit Tea - A bit pricey, but I was incredibly impressed with this balanced, tropical tea that had flavor linger gently in my mouth for minutes before the first food arrived. 4.8/5 Pork Belly Taco - Perhaps they got my order wrong but was this a carnitas taco? Pulled pork with an excellent smokey flavor, but clearly dry, lean meat that seemed like it was sitting in a steam tray all day that eventually ran out of water. The toppings and sauce it came with were excellent. Overall, I will give the meat a pass because I did show up an hour before closing. But is this really pork belly? 4.4/5 Chorizo Empanada - Very flavorful and balanced filling, could use a touch more and depth of flavor. Pretty heavy. Chimi was solid. 4.5/5 Burger - I have pretty high standards for burgers, and this one was more visually stunning than flavorful. It just tasted a bit one note despite having an array of toppings. No sauce on the bottom bun helped the structure and freshness but hindered the flavor. Not a fan of the pickles jumbled up on the top either. 3.5/5 Fries - Very flavorful seasoned fries that were crispy and hot. They seemed like they were from a frozen bag as opposed to fresh cut. 4.4/5 Porchetta - A heavy, over-seasoned dish with overrated, clumpy, and salty mashed potatoes. The meat was fatty and had a nice fresh undertone via the fruit garnish, but it was not enough to cut through the fat. 3/5 Flourless chocolate cake - A dense cake that had a strong first bite, but it was a symbol of the meal - visually sharp presentation and strong first impression but wavering appeal. The dipping sauces were mostly just alright and a tad sweet. 3/5 Service I did point out I arrived about an hour before closing and ended up being one of the last customers. As someone who has years of experience in the front and back of the house, I completely understand the frustration at the end of a day where you just want to go home, and I felt that from the service. I think I was polite myself, but was taken aback from the light frustrated tone in the owner's voice when I had to ask many times in different ways what she recommended. She did finally arrive at a few, but it felt like pulling teeth. I do understand, it does depend on what I like - however, I am asking you for your expertise. When I was asked for recommendations as a Server, I had them ready to go immediately. It's essentially what your go-to foods are. I am open for flavor of all kinds. Parking : it's a busy street on Willow street so definitely score street parking that's about 4 minute walking distance. Amenities: super clean and dark theme hence the name Black Pork! This section of downtown Long Beach is not exactly the place I would be looking for the #1 best burger in the nation. This sad neighborhood is, at best, post-WWII scruffy and run-down. Parking is sparse, you will likely need to find parking on side streets. There is nothing else here to attract the masses. But by golly, I think I have found the ultimate burger right here. And the rest of their short menu is just as appealing. My advice? I would NEVER allow outside appearances to keep you from venturing here. This is a little jewel. Every inch is adorable, fresh, clean, witty, and welcoming. The interior is tiny, able to squeeze in 22 guests. Starting with being greeted by a 4' pig statue at the front door, the theme throughout is piggies and industrial modern decor. The kitchen is glassed in so you can watch the delightful, diligent husband and wife team, Luis and Veronica, at work. He cooks, she serves, cleans, and manages the cash register where you must order and pay. She also did the wonderful decor. The final touch is the relaxing, classy, soft jazz in the background. First came the Guacamole con Puerco- slices of pork belly and crisp, light chicharrones topping a bowl of fresh, lightly spicy guacamole. Wonderful in every way. So outstanding were the pork belly slices, their pork belly skewer needs to be on our next meal list. But today, after seeing the photos of the Black Fried Cheese Burger, I had eyes for nothing else. It started with a House-made black brioche bun. It's distinctive color is from black squid ink. The bread was so soft and moist, and topped with toasted sesame seeds. Delicious all on its own. Then came the inner layers - mayo, lettuce, tomato, red onion, a thick patty made of well aged beef (1/2 lb ?), melty sharp Cheddar chunks, a couple slices of thick bacon, fresh chimichurri sauce, a slab of breaded, fried yellow cheese, and dill pickle slices, all skewered together, looking like a leaning tower of Pisa. It arrived quickly. I was startled into the reality that there was no way I was going to get my mouth around this showcase burger, so my fork rescued me from humiliation and I dived in. I only made it about 1/3 of the way in and had to cry "Uncle!". Basically, that means 2 more heavenly meals on the horizon for me. Oh lordy! Mr. B has never met a braised Short Rib meal he could pass by. This and a pile of mashed potatoes, surrounded by a mellow, well seasoned, brown gravy, were his reward. Very tender and moist, this was a huge serving that was also destined for glory as leftovers. (But frankly my dear, my burger was better!) His final indulgence was a Coconut Mango smoothie, big and luscious, and not overly sweet. They have multiple flavors to choose from. At this point, I knew I needed to make up excuses to return to this area. This is a 45 mile drive on nasty freeways for us, but who cares. So much to try, and that includes one of the most amazing looking Cuban sandwiches I have ever seen that went to a smiling face at another table. Really! They have been open just 6 months. Luis Mendiola is my new favorite chef! We heard about Black Pork through Long Beach Food Scene and came for dinner a few times. The Korean barbeque and braised short ribs are outstanding, but my very favorites are the porchetta and empanadas. There is such attention to detail; even the french fries are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. We had a holiday gathering last week and we decided to cater from Black Pork. The food elevated the party! Veronica was so easy to work with and guided me through the process of what I should order and how to reheat to basically present to food at its best. Went here for the first time! And the food was solid! My husband and his dad have been here and I've been wanting to try it, don't let the area fool you! It's definitely a good spot to eat! Definitely recommend the braised short rib and the Mac and cheese bomb! read more
