Cute little cafe on 24th - very close to the Freehand hotel, where I was staying. I popped down there in the morning to grab a breakfast sandwich and some treats for us for later in the day. The siracha egg sandwich was tasty, but next time I would definitely ask for it on a bagel. The bun was light and fluffy but didn't offer a lot of flavor. The tea selection was good, there were three donuts to choose from (I went with the confetti!), and there were a variety of other pastries. My friend really liked the lemon poppyseed muffin and my donut was very good. The seating inside is limited to about 4-6 people, but there were a few outdoor options. Not the most picturesque street (lots of scaffolding on surrounding buildings right now) - but I'm sure w/o that it would be a lovely little place to spend the morning. read more

Cute little bustling spot tucked away on 24th st. I got a flat white and an egg, cheddar cheese, and avocado croissant. The flat white was smooth and velvety. The sandwich was very good: I ordered my egg over easy, so it was nice and runny, and the cheese and avocado tasted super-fresh. The croissant was nice and chewy on the inside, flaky on the outside. My friend enjoyed a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel with tomatoes, red onion, and capers. There are a few tables and some bench seating inside, but overall, there's only space for about six people to dine in. All inside spots were occupied, so we grabbed the lone table outside as it was a relatively mild winter day. We'll definitely be back to try some more dishes, drinks, and pastries. read more

I love this little bakery. It has a very relaxing and cute vibe - only I think 2 tables and a couple window seats inside but there's some outdoor seating as well for when the weather is nice. It's next to a comedy club. I usually come here on the way to work. Their croissants are divine (fresh and flaky)- They have an egg and cheese one that's perfect for breakfast and their egg salad croissant is also phenomenal - super fresh. They also have an assortment of baked goods including some less common ones like canneles and scones and I believe they change them out regularly. The staff are also very, very nice. I really need to cast aside preconceived notions I have about multi-loc eateries being soulless, flavorless places because Black Star Bakery is anything but. They seem to be thriving despite opening this Gramercy location in the midst of a pandemic, and it's no surprise their array of pastries, delicious breakfast sandwiches, and Oslo coffee brings customers back to their airy, plant-filled space. People need their coffee in a cute environment after all, pandemic be damned. They're carefully following CDC guidelines by enforcing mask usage among staff and patrons, limiting occupancy inside at any given time, installing a hand sanitizer station, and having contactless payment available. They have a couple of tables outside under a huge patio umbrella so you can stay dry and shaded while satisfying your caffeine fix. Under this umbrella I enjoyed an admittedly overly sweet iced chai latte, which I viewed more as a dessert than a vehicle for caffeine. I was so pleasantly surprised by my breakfast burrito, which had the perfect ratio of cheese, eggs, avocado, sprouts, and sriracha mayo. $9.99 felt appropriately priced for the area, and adding lox to the burrito was only $3.50 extra-- that's less than even a bagel shop would charge, and the bagel shop wouldn't even be cute inside. The burrito itself is pretty sizeable and left me feeling pretty sated for the rest of the day. Separately I've tried the Avocado Trip, which is an avocado, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich that comes on a nice pillowy croissant--my preferred breakfast sandwich bread. There's been so much turnover for businesses at this location over the years, but I have a feeling the foot traffic this cafe has been bringing to this block will break the curse. The good: Lattes are pretty good. Chai latte pretty good. Wide variety of danishes and breakfast menu. So far I have had: plain and almond croissant; egg and cheese on a croissant; bagel with cream cheese and tomatoes and breakfast bowl. All have been good. The so-so: There is one person making the coffee and running the register so when there a lot of people it can take a while for you to get serviced. Same thing for the food, one person making food for pick up and to go orders. The prices are a bit high. The bad: No bathrooms for customers (this is coming from a pregnant woman who needs to pee all the time lol). They open at 8am which is kind of late for a coffee shop especially since there are a lot of hospital workers in the area. Final Verdict: I don't think coffee every day but will certainly keep coming. read more

Love this little cafe! I've stopped by twice and both times the staff has been super friendly and maintaining safety precautions. The croissants here are buttery, light, and have the perfect crunch. If you're looking for something a bit more substantial, but still on the lighter side, I highly recommend their apple and brie croissant. The addition of arugula and honey make this the perfect sweet and salty sandwich. So good. They make a really good dirty chai latte, and their cold brew is solid too. The food is good but I am irritated by their service this morning. I put in a takeout order and arrived a little earlier than the estimated pickup time. I told them I just put in an order and my name when I arrived and told them I'd just wait there until it's ready. There were no customers at the time. But then, after my food was ready, they did not give it to me right away but just set it aside. It was not bust at all this morning. Only a couple of customers came after me. I do not understand why they just put my food aside after it's done instead of handing it to me directly, while they had no problem handing the food to the other customers as soon as their food was ready. I was really annoyed and did not appreciate that no one called my name after my food was ready until all the other customers came after me and ordered on the spot already got their food and left.
