We really don't understand what all the fuss is about. Their "signature" food items are nothing to write home about. We went there with a group of 6 people to celebrate birthdays. The service was delayed. The food cheaply made. I ordered a rubbery chicken fried chicken, my husband had their very tough "signature steak." And insult to injury we were celebrating three birthdays, paying a bill for SIX people's meals and liquor and we were told we could only be given one free birthday dessert all three birthday people would have to share. Classic decor matching their 1966 founding. Clean and well maintained. Casual and enjoyable atmosphere. Onion soup was fine - pretty standard. Calamari out of a box perhaps and served with cocktail sauce vs. marinara. Nevertheless, enjoyable for an unpretentious palate. Side salad with a slightly too sweet bleu cheese had corn chex for croutons. Turns out corn chex on salad is tasty. Pepper steak is the signature sirloin and it was very good. As the name suggests, the marinade is heavy on the black peppercorns. Baked potato was ruined for me by being too sweet. I thought it was the sour cream but later discovered the potato itself was the culprit. That said, my neighbor's fries looked wonderfully cooked IE. well done. Recommend those instead. A friend and I went to Black Steer for lunch on a Tuesday. We arrived at 11:30 am. We were the first. Chose the table ourselves, which I like. It began to get more diners after we ordered. My friend got Pepper Ka Bob medium rare with rice and ice water. I got the Lunch Ka Bob with mushroom gravy, medium, and sweet potato fries extra, and side salad extra. Unsweetened iced tea was raspberry which they told me before I ordered it. It was very good. The skewers had 6 oz of very nicely cooked chunks of beef, skewer removed, which were tender and flavorful and no fat or sinew to deal with. My mushroom gravy was rich dark brown and although I didn't see any mushrooms I didn't really mind as it was very flavorful also. Melt in your mouth sweet potato fries. Nothing needed any salt. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away The Rear of the Steer and the front portion of the place, The Black Steer were owned by the same person that ran the Charco Broiler. That was a long time ago and a new owner took over at The Black Steer. The new owner apparently knew to keep a good thing going. The Charco Broiler has been a staple in Fort Collins for years. The steak, salad and baked potato taste almost identical to it's northerly neighbor to this day and that is something you just can't go wrong with. I specifically ordered on my very first visit to this place recently, a peppered char bob which tasted wonderful! A baked potato, salad and bread also accompanied my meal. The wait staff were wonderful and friendly. The place was very quiet unlike the steak house up north which has a reputation for being noisy. The waitress indicated that this is not always the case. Went here awhile back for a birthday dinner with my family. As someone that works in a restaurant I was blown away at how abysmal everything at this restaurant is. Prices are normal for a quality steakhouse, so I had high hopes. However, the steaks we were all serves were quite poor. Extremely tough, small, yet very thick cuts of meat. Maybe some people like that, I sure don't. All steaks ordered were circular, about 4in in diameter and about the same in depth; basically cubes of steak. Poorly seasoned in my opinion. The mashed potatoes seemed on par with high school cafeteria potatoes. I can move past the food though, I mean I've had worse. But the service, was just... Ugh. I'm a waiter, it's not a difficult job but we had an older woman as our waitress, she was pleasant but a little distant and that's okay. Though there was a young man there however, maybe a busser, that had no idea what was going on. At one point I remember him just standing over the table without saying anything for awhile. It was pretty awkward. Maybe it was his first day, seemed like it. Too get even better, during our meal one of my party started choking on their meal. I know that's not to be expected but there was no acknowledgement of it by any of the staff what so ever. This cozy place reminded me of a hobbit hole. Lots of unique art and sculptures to look at. The ambiance is definitely blue collar and family friendly. Chex cereal on a salad. Interesting but not an improvement to a salad. My friend ordered the bacon wrapped filet and she said it was tender and perfectly cooked. She also ordered one of the lobster tails. She said it was very tasty. For $26 I would hope so. I ordered the petite pepper filet. Normally when I have ordered pepper steak they use cracked black pepper. This restaurant obviously using regular ground pepper because you could not see it. They also did not use any salt. The outside was overcharred which made it hard to cut. It was done medium well inside but it was a very chewy piece of meat. My friend even commented on how hard I seemed to be sawing my meat. The watermelon is a different touch. It was a good piece of watermelon especially for this time of year. But watermelon served on a hot plate? Rolls also would be better if they were warmed. My filet I ordered medium, it came out well done and I sent it back. The second one came out almost raw, sent it back. By the third time my husband had completely eaten his meal. He ate alone and then I ate alone. I wasn't even hungry by the third try. I think my meal should have been taken off the bill or offered a free desert instead the waitress didn't charge us for our two soft drinks. Went to Black Steer for our 38th anniversary. It was recommended by a friend. I read several reviews before going and was a little worried what we'd experience. We were very happy with our experience. Keeping in mind that we went earlier than the dinner rush arriving at around 5:30. We were seated promptly and greated by our server soon afterward to take our drink order. We each ordered the pepper steak. Salads were fresh with wonderful house made dressings although they only contained iceberg lettuce. The steaks arrived in a timely manner and were perfectly cooked and seasoned. I had requested steak sauce but did not use any. Wait staff was attentive keeping our drinks topped off. When we were finished we received our check without waiting. The place filled up pretty good by the time we left but I'm sure we'll be back again! read more

The meal was fine, nothing special. The really big deal was when my sister who is in a wheelchair, can't walk or stand had to use the ladies room. She is in a very narrow wheelchair as she is very small, could not get into the ladies room to go to the bathroom. The only way we could have done it is to lift her from her chair and carry her into the bathroom. ADA compliant restrooms should be a must in restaurants....this is 2017! If I'm going to pay premium price, for a steak, I should at least get what I'm ordering. 2 guests, 1 filet mignon, 1 New York. Filet is medium rare, New York is medium. Filet mignon is an inch thick, and as well done as you can get. As much as we hate to return food, we did. It came back cold, 25 minutes later. My partner felt guilty eating his gristle and sides, that he ate 1 bite a minute. To wait for me to eat with him. Sorry. We've waited 2 months, of savings, to do this. Let me just say first and foremost Alex our server was polite and trying her best to work with a horrible situation, so all comments forward have nothing to do with service. This restaurant is infested with drain flys, they're stuck to the walls, the ceiling, and periodically dive bombing the patrons. Now I know at this point you're saying "why did you stay", we being in a party of 8 with 3 kids and all of the chaos that's involved with that, we didn't really even notice until our salads were half way eaten and bugs floating in our drinks. The atmosphere was the only positive thing about this experience. This was a birthday celebration planned for 6 of us. We had made reservations. When we arrived we were told they forgot to reserve our table and that it would be about 20 minutes. We did see at least 3 other tables empty and with reserved signs but we went to the bar area to wait. 20 minutes later we were told it would be another 5 minutes or so. After waiting 35 minutes we were taken to our table, 3 feet from the front door in the middle of the walk way! I feel we should have been offered a free drink at least , but we were not. The service was very slow. My companions waited almost the entire meal for their drinks and one never did get his. We also requested 3 separate tickets at the beginning of the meal. When they came there were things on the wrong tickets plus additional entrees not ordered at our table! Last but certainly not least... The food was not edible. My husband had to dismantle his steak sandwich as it was so tough that it was impossible to eat the way it was intended. He tried to cut it but finally gave up and ate a few grease soaked fries. So very disappointing. Went there at 4 in the afternoon before they get busy. Our server could not say you're welcome any of the times we said thank you. We had to wait forever to get our meal. The excuse was that we ordered a burger well done so it was taking longer. Even though there were people that came in after us and got their lobster order before we got a burger. My girlfriend and I tried this place for the first time on the recommendation of her dad, he used to go there 20+ year ago. The steaks were really good and cooked exactly how we wanted them (and we have opposite tastes in how we like them cooked), and the service was great. When you enter the front door on Lincoln it's a little strange how you walk basically in to where people are eating, but otherwise this place has a ton of old Loveland character, and we'll definitely be back! read more

Always used to come here as children. Had the opportunity to try it out again last night for the first time in ages. Was sadly disappointed. Both from service and food quality. First we ordered the calamari and fried mushrooms. They were the smallest portions I've ever had for $9 each. The fried mushrooms were fried but had no batter? They just took raw mushrooms and fried them. The calamari was burnt to a crisp and almost inedible. The salads had corn chex on them? Next was dinner. $23 ribeye that I ordered rare was cold in the center. The 2 that ordered theirs medium got rare cooked. We questioned the mushrooms and the server said she'd only had fried mushrooms that way and didn't know they were supposed to be battered. Way better steakhouses in Loveland. My wife and I have past this place many times thinking it was a dive. Well, we were so wrong, the food and the service were top notch. And yes the place is different and out of yesteryear, but that is what makes it so great. The chicken fried chicken was perfect, with cream gravy that was almost a cream sauce was to die for. If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Imagine this: Anniversary dinner. Thursday evening, around 6:30 p.m. the place isn't packed. Two people in the "Rear of the Steer" outside. About 3 tables inside had groups of people around 6-8 per table. Plenty of empty tables inside. Since the evening was nice, we went out front to dine. Because it was a special occasion, I ordered the Surf and Turf. Filet Mignon, $21 and lobster for an additional $27, with baked potato. I specifically said I did not want my steak brown on the inside, but pink. My husband ordered the pepper steak, medium rare (I don't mind if it's still mooing he quipped.) with a baked potato. It was taking an unusually long time to get our food. As my husband was just getting up to see what was taking so long, the waitress came out with our plates. Mine was missing the lobster. My husband's did not come with any butter or sour cream. The waitress immediately noticed this and said she would bring out the butter and sour cream for him. And she said the lobster was coming out in a bit. When I cut into my filet mignon, it was completely overcooked and brown through and through, My husband cut into his steak and it was partly brown, and not anywhere near rare. She offered to comp us the beer, but we had enough. We paid for our drinks, sent the rest back and refused to pay for it. I only ate my potato and we didn't eat anything of the other items. (the lobster never did come out.) Mary, the waitress was fine, it was not her fault at all. But the kitchen staff really needed some serious help. And the manager should have come out and comped the entire meal and had the correct meal cooked for us. We will never go back there. read more

My table had the mussels, chilli cheese burger, sweet potato fries, 10oz steak and baked potato. I like to get mussels wherever I go because they're delicious, especially with garlic and butter but here they were just ok. The steak was very chewy and they did cook it medium rare as requested. I mentioned it when the server asked us how the meal was and she was very nice and wanted to do something to help but we said it was ok. She comp'd us for the soda which isn't much but it was an extremely nice gesture on her part. The sweet potato fries weren't sweet and tasted a lot like regular fries.
