Worst steak I've (not)eaten in years. Arrived early (5:30PM), with only a few tables occupied, most already served. Salads and rolls decent. I ordered the "famous" pepper steak. Wife ordered bacon wrapped filet. Steaks came on what I thought were to be "sizzling" platters. Not. My medium rare was lukewarm, immediately gristly, and with only a hint of pepper. When I showed the waitress the gristly pieces I'd saved and complained about the lack of pepper, she attempted to show me where the pepper had been placed, but did ask if I'd like something else. My mistake was thinking maybe the rest of it would be o.k. and I responded, "No". The next few bites were equally disappointing. That was the last we saw of our waitress until the check was laid next to my wife.... Now, I'd give this one star, but my wife said her steak was excellent. This leads me to the conclusion, based on so many varied reviews, that dinning experiences are inconsistent, so the Black Steer needs to round up its cook staff to better inspect the Steer before serving. read more

Had fond memories of this place, and had a great burger there years ago. Recently, the cow's arse logo and name matched the food...boo. It wasn't good. Too bad because even though they weren't busy we couldn't get decent service or decent food. Our burgers were the wrong temps, cold, and the buffalo burger tasted old. Good food at a good price. For around $20, the steaks are a nice size, come with a side and a fun salad with Chex mix as a topping. The atmosphere was nice with dimmed lighting and a comfortable dining room. Would go back again. read more

I was realizing that I've been to this restaurant at least a dozen times, and every time I've had a awesome steak; perfectly cooked, medium rare, generous portion, reasonably priced. I was also realizing that the wait help is experienced, attentive, and knowledgeable. read more

The interior is shall we say....dated. It is very dark which some may say adds to the atmosphere but I say it's to try to hide what they don't want you to see. I've eaten here a few times (none at my request). I have yet to get a good steak here. I hear lots of people rave about how good it is. I think these poor people have just never tasted a good steak. My kids did enjoy their meals though which is why I am giving it 2 stars instead of one. I will mention that I did like the chex on the salad in lieu of croutons but maybe that's because I've had too many croutons that were hard as rocks at places. read more

LOVE this place! Talk about a trip down memory lane-- they haven't changed a thing from when they opened, which had to have been in the 1960s. The bar area looks like a spot where Bill Bixby would have taken a date on "The Courtship of Eddie's Father." And the waitresses seem to have been there for a few decades, as well. The best surprise was the food. I had lobster, my b.f. had steak and we both had drinks and dessert. The whole bill was under $60! Outstanding steak and burgers! If I come here for dinner, it's a treat and I get really excited! I'm sad to say that the prices have increased ... but in this economy, can we blame them?? They are still serving the same great steak and potato's! My husband likes to get the Black Steer Burger ... best ever, he says! I like to get the Petite Black Pepper Steak (this thing is everything BUT petite! I almost feel guilty for eating the whole thing because I would not imagine petite being this big!) and the baked potato and salad w/ranch dressing. If you critic your dressing like I do, this is homemade ranch ...very good. The potato is firm but soft at the same time .. does not taste like it's been sitting in a hot oven all day. I was very disappointed. My son ordered the chicken with brown gravy and received the white gravy. It was sent back and the brown gravy on top of the white. Spoke to the manager and her statement was that she seen a new piece of chicken cook and that would not happen. So I guess the customer is not always right. The waitress need to pay more attention to the customer instead of the men that was at the bar. He was very verbal when we left and my son was the same way. Mixed but better than average. The first thing to know is that the hostess is in the middle of the building, you will need to go past several tables to check in. We had read this in the reviews so we were prepared but it is odd. Second, the staff was great. Friendly and helpful. I dunno about the Chex mix in lieu of croutons in the salad. I guess its a thing but not one I really cared for. The streaks were good but honestly, not the best. I'm a steak guy and I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5. For a steakhouse that touts its beef as the best around I'd expect a bit better. The peanut pie is pretty good and worth a try. All in all I'm glad we went and I would go back but I wouldn't expect the best steak of my life, just a good solid no real complaints kind of meal. read more

Best lunch I have had in Loveland! I first went to this restaurant in 1966 on a job interview. Don't remember that lunch. I believe it has had only 2 owners in 50 years. It must be the oldest restaurant in Loveland, I am sure it is. I had the grilled Ahi tuna sandwich with veggies. The tuna was delicious and the veggies were outstanding. I loved the seasoning! My companion thought his hamburger was average. I suppose most chefs don't focus on burgers? There is a nice bar. The margarita was wonderful. Cream pies have been standard since 1966, when it opened. Try Banana Cream. The decor is western with some modern accents. It was very quiet. It is locally owned. read more

I thought this place was great! I could only afford to go once but it was great. I have the chicken salad and it was good....my husband had a burger and it was HUGE! He enjoyed every bite. Our kind waitress was so nice to bring pineapple for my little one to munch on...free of charge. The margaritas are one of the best in Loveland...and they are pretty big too. I loved the inside, the walls are made of railroad ties...clever. It's a dark setting...which I adore. This place is awesome when you want a nice quiet dining experience, the rear of the steer has a real cozy, casual atmosphere. The burgers are some of the best around and the pepper steak is out of tis world. Prices are reasonable and service is always top notch. $45 Nightmare! I have had fond memories of birthday dinners here. Tonight, I took my wife to the steer for their amazing pepper stake. The service was slow, which isn't a big deal. But my wife's stake was rotten. She has worked in the food industry for many years cooking meat and she knew at the first bite. We told our server but it was obvious she wasn't too concerned. She blamed my wife's "taste buds" and didn't even apologize. She made no effort to salvage a bad dinner date. We decided to talk to a manager to find that the manager WAS our server. $45 for a terrible night. I will never return and would feel fine if they went out of business. Go anywhere else. read more

Worst customer service ever. When I last ordered food my order was completely wrong, wrong food and the steak was totally over cooked. When I called to talk to someone about my order being wrong I was only offered a piece of pie for them screwing up my order. Because I couldn't believe that's how they handled the situation I drove back to the restaurant to return the food. I got a refund and a backhanded apology which prompted me to call a manager. When I spoke to the manager she basically told me it was a "misunderstanding" on my part, that they weren't in the wrong for completely screwing up my order. Not only did I waste my whole entire lunch break returning food I didn't order, I had to go back to work without lunch because of this, then on top of that they had the audacity to try and blame the customer. This is one of the best places I have ever eaten. Honest. You will love this place. I only ate lunch there once back in March 2008 but will be back in July. I live in Maryland and only get to Colorado for work, but this place... oh man. Just go there for lunch once and get the lunch special which is a sirloin steak and a small salad and ... well, that's about it. If you love steak you will love this restaurant. There's nothing fancy about it but the food is great and the setting is nice and comfortable. You will enjoy a meal here. No doubt about it. read more

I have been coming to the Black Steer since 1976. Today was the last time. They used to serve wonderful lunches at a great price with great serving sizes. This last time I had the Tao Chicken. It was served on flat bread instead of panini. The chicken breast was cut in half, thin and chewy, avocado was shaved paper thin, tiny poblano and a thin slice of cheese. Fish and chips was also ordered and was smaller than previous times. The lunch price is up with smaller portions. I know, go with the healthy times. We have came back a few times, having steaks, kabobs.... hoping for wonderful, tasty food. But it is a disappointment now. We have enjoyed the staff who are friendly and attentive, they deserve five stars. read more

This is the most bizarre restaurant I have ever been to. My friend and I decided to have dinner here on a Friday night when the restaurant we intended to go to had a very long wait. We wandered in and thought we had come in the wrong door as there is no host station, lobby, or waiting area. The decor is tacky, cluttered, and unsettling. As we awkwardly stood in the midst of tables right inside the door where other patrons were staring at us, a teenager emerged from the depths of somewhere and seated us by saying, "Uh...here?", pointing to a table about two inches away from the door (a spot where a host stand could have fit nicely). We sat down and were brought the minimal, overpriced menu, and decided to both get the same burger. Our server came back about twenty minutes later, after visiting a reserved table several times. She took our order, and then we waited about 40 minutes until our food arrived. In the meantime, several other patrons walked in through the door about a centimeter away from my chair, looking confused and also thinking they were in the wrong entrance. The server brought our food and pulled ketchup and mustard bottles from somewhere under her apron (?). Then, she disappeared for another 15 minutes. The burgers were not cooked the way we ordered them, the bagged shredded cheddar on top was not melted, and on the menu the burger was described as being topped with caramelized onions...it was not. The pickles looked past their expiration date, and everything was lukewarm and weird tasting. The fries had no salt or seasoning on them at all and were basically flavorless, oily, half-cooked potatoes. Lastly, there was a perplexing, out-of-season slice of watermelon sitting on the plate, which was neither ordered nor mentioned on the menu. We explained this all to our server when she finally returned, and she just said she'd talk to her manager. The only good thing about the night is that we were told we don't have to pay for the food we refused to eat. I am not paying ten dollars for a burger if I can make a better one at home. Unless you have 2 hours to waste before you expect to be served, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this restaurant! When we got there, a customer that heard our wait time was going to be 25 minutes, told is it was not true! He said that was what he was told, and the reality was AN HOUR before being seated! After being seated, no one offered us the usual bread or a glass of water! We ordered our plain salads and WAITED! After another half an hour of waiting, I asked for the bread, just to be informed that the restaurant ran out of bread! Still not one drop of water or salad! Finally we were served the salad with a few crackers! We finished and WAITED AND WAITED!!!! We finished our drinks and still no food or water! The waitress apologized for the delay, informing us there was nothing she could do. After almost TWO HOURS since we stepped into the restaurant, I asked to talk with the manager. She was unapologetic for the wait time, informing us that we should have expected the delay since it was a weekend!!!! I told her they should NOT LIE to customers and be honest about the wait time! She said that the sitting time was one thing and had nothing to do with the serving time! I responded that WAITING AN HOUR AND A HALF to be served was ridiculous! Finally, starving with no sign of our food, we informed the manager we were going to leave. She then informed us our food would be out in four minutes, but who knows? It could be another 40 minutes. Hungry, we decided not to wait any longer! The manager brought us the check, charging us $14.00 for 2 plain salads that were supposed to be part of the meal! I asked her about the charge, and again, no sign of regret or apology for the delay! I paid the $14.00 charge for the salad and our drinks, and left! I am glad we were not served water and bread because she was probably going to charge us another $20.00 for having consumed water and snacked on bread while we waited!!! There is NO WAY I WOULD WANT TO GO BACK TO THIS HORRENDOUS RESTAURANT!!!!!! read more

I've been here 3 times & my steak has consistently been overcooked. Tonight, my husbands steak came out cold. We're not people to complain about much or send things back but he did tonight. Walking into this place is super strange. The exterior looks like a greasy dive bar, but when you walk in, you're suddenly in Old People Disneyland. The aesthetic is nice, but curiously kitschy. The food is like really, really high-end nursing home food. It's not bad, but it appeals to a certain crowd. I don't think I'd consider going back before the age of 60. read more
