I needed a suit and this was the highest rated place that I came across on my search. Black Tie Affair is tucked away in the area by Pillbox Pharmacy and Hale Vietnam by Harding Avenue. The shop is small, but they have a large selection. They had exactly what I wanted. Everything is included in the cost including the shoes, vest, shirt, and fitting. Mike was very good at helping me choose a suit and has a sharp eye to making you looks good. I don't wear suits very often in Hawaii because it gets so hot and everyone is so informal. He was also very friendly and nice, which was refreshing. Parking is relatively easy with stall right in front, but the parking lot does get full sometimes. read more

Really nice guy, sales personality, very helpful, but talks waaayyyy too much...about who knows what. Sometimes a customer just wants to go in, ask their questions, get what they gotta do done, and get outta there. Don't get me wrong, we've used BTA for many occassions and always a success, but many times I'm hesitant because not every single time we have an hour to spare of just talking story. FRIGGIN AWESOME SERVICE so im gonna start off with saying that i was probably the most unprepared, disorganized, stressed out and hectic customer anybody can have, but MIKE over at BTA was so understanding to the point of me almost calling him jesus at one point, lol jk jk. They close their store at 6pm THEY STAYED OPEN TILL 7:30PM TO MAKE SURE I GOT MY SUIT FOR THE NEXT DAYS WEDDING. i had called some other suit rental place, the owners name is Phil, all i know is that he is one of the bigger suit rental shop owners on the island and he told me his store hours were till 6pm but he had some other place to be other than RUNNING HIS BUSINESS AND HELPING ME. DUDE. YOUR HOURS SAY 6PM...CLOSE AT 6PM YOU A$$. so he closed his doors at 5pm instead, probably screwing over at least a couple of other people with weekend suit needin plans. (some of you might say that i should have done my planning earlier and this was my fault...to a certain extent i do agree with you, but my financial situation dictated that i couldnt do anything till i got my paycheck which was on the same day that i got my suit rental) down to the wire on this one. in no way am i encouraging people to go in at the last minute like BTA is always going to take all comers, but MIKE understood that i was panicked and needed a suit for my brothers wedding so he told me to come down and he'd try to help me out. called at 5:30pm telling them that id be there soon, hop into a cab at it takes 35 minutes during traffic hours to get to BTA. at 6:05pm he calls me...let me repeat...HE CALLED ME to see if i was still coming in reassuring me that he was still there and still willing to help! SERVICE! I get to BTA and he fits me with a suit and and even made sure that i knew how to manage a necktie also. We originally got my son's tux for chorus. I have to admit I was a little irritated that his teacher told us or recommended us to buy one, but then it all made sense! Lol Black Tie Affair made sure there's room to grow, so he could wear it for his senior year as well. THEN, they also said he can wear it to prom! Guess what?! He went to his junior prom last night! We still had to rent a different shirt, matching tie (for the girls dress) and a vest. He is also going to another prom next month and another chorus performance by the end of the year. Renting and renting over again would've been very costly, so I'm glad we made the purchase. He'll be wearing it for his senior year at least 3-4 times, so this was well worth it. I tried to make this as short & positive as possible... PROS: 1. Reasonable pricing (compared to Celebrity Tuxedos since we went there first) 2. Location (Kaimuki area) 3. A good amount of selections for tuxedo styles/colors 4. Owner (Mike) and his wife are friendly 5. I liked corresponding with his wife, she was straight to the point and very helpful especially in the store 6. Able to turn in tuxedos 2 days after our wedding CONS: 1. Parking can be kind of crazy especially during lunch time 2. Mike is friendly and likes to talk a lot which we totally don't mind (not a con), we like that we get to know him better BUT upon our first visit, he was talking negatively about other tuxedo companies and what they do wrong etc. (which I did not ask to know and I didn't think that was professional). I would have gone to another Tuxedo place, but price wise, this was the better selection. So I just ignored that. 3. He does not write things down -My dad came in to get fitted and he measured him very quickly BUT did not write anything down and continued to talk stories with my dad and I. Then couple days later he calls to say my dad needs to come in to get fitted again because he forgot some measurements. In addition, when we came in to pick the vest color, style and design we had showed him the exact one we wanted (one of his samples in the store) and covered all the specifics (again did not take notes). The next day I received an email from him asking again what color and design for the vests. 4. He spoke about how big our groomsmen were to another groomsman upon his fitting (Not professional at all and it made me very upset). 5. The color we chose for the vest was GRAY to match the bridesmaids dresses and he ordered TAUPE (a coffee color/tan). The tuxedos arrived (from the mainland) 2 DAYS BEFORE the wedding, no time to really do anything and he did not even say sorry. He was blaming the book (*side note: since the original vest color/design we chose was not available, we had to choose one from his book so I told him to pick the gray that was most similar to the initial color we picked) and he said he thought it looked like gray in the picture, but guess it looks different in person. Of course it will look a little different in person but as the owner/seller, you should know that or if you didn't, you should at least order a sample or something to be 100% sure. It was a lot of additional stress to deal with 2 days before the wedding with no time to get the correct colors or order vests from somewhere else. Unfortunately, we had no choice but to let our boys wear it at the wedding and keep their jackets buttoned up so it's not too obvious (which helped a lot). I'm not trying to stop Black Tie Affair from having business, there are definitely pros to this company (as listed above) but just wanted to bring awareness as these things could have been prevented especially with how each con came about. Our wedding planner from Blink Weddings and Events referred Black Tie Affair after we asked for suggestions on where to get tuxedo's. For those of you like me who weren't familiar with Black Tie Affair, it's in the same shopping center as Big City Diner, Kim Chee II, Happy Day, and a bunch of fine eateries on Waialae Ave. Parking can be tight, but if you go during now prime-time hours, you should find ample parking. When my fiance at the time and I went to visit Black Tie Affair, we were very impressed with the showroom and the friendliness of the owner Mike. We talked story for a long time and he made it seem like you were a long time customer or a friend! He's very professional, helpful, and very knowledgeable with the trends. Black Tie Affair has a ton of selections to pick from and pricing is very reasonable. He has a wide variety of colors and different styles of tuxedo's to offer. We both were very impressed with his selections and already knew we were going to do business with Black Tie Affair. After the tuxedo fitting, I was assured that I was in great hands and we signed a contract that same day. On my final tuxedo fitting, Mike remembered that I mentioned that I was going to lose 10lbs due to a bet and because I wanted to look good for my wedding. By him remembering that, that just confirmed that we were in great hands. Again, he was very friendly and talkative which makes the experience that much better. Finally it was time and picked up the tuxedo the day before the wedding. He had everything ready to go and nothing was missing! Luckily, Mike at Black Tie Affair made my tux experience so much easier. Actually, he was the easiest person we did business with. Mike, a master at his trade, was very professional, friendly and helpful. He was able to keep track of the Groom's and all groomsmen's measurements sent in from four different states. Came here to get a suit rental for job interview. Booked everything and prepaid for it. Then 3 days before interview, I had a stroke of bad luck and wasn't able to attend the interview. I came in the next business day and talked to them, wasn't able to get a full refund due to their rental policy, but the owner was nice enough to offer a refund of half the rental price. Wasn't even expecting anything, but that was a nice surprise. I forgot about it and about a month later, a refund check arrived in the mail from BTA. Overall I would come back here if needed in the future. The only thing that sucks is paying for the parking in the lot, but that's a separate company. Be warned, the owner does talk story a lot, the line does tend to get long and wait times could be awhile, so give yourself plenty of time when going here, don't expect to be in and out. read more

Mike and The lady (I forgot her name, sorry! I think it was Carol) was very helpful in helping me with my wedding party tuxes. Very professional, very knowledgeable in the fitting that you can't get anywhere else especially if you don't have any knowledge in sizing or sense of style. I would say they're very helpful in those areas because I don't wear suits or formal clothing. I needed tuxes for my wedding party and for me and they made sure everyone of my groomsmen were fitted right and looking handsome. I went with a standard black tux and bow tie and comfort fit. It looked ok but i felt something wasn't right. A month after my pick out, I scheduled my groomsmen for their fitting, after seeing my groomsmen get fitted for their grey suits, I decided to change mines into a better fitted grey tux (also I lost 15 lbs) which turned out way better looking. I went with a slim sizable fit than a comfortable baggy fit (which was my first outfit). The slim fit looked way better. Gotta grow up now right? And I am about to get married so I gotta look good lol. But yeah. Mike and Carol (hope that's her name) really helped out with the fitting, for 3 suits and 1 tux to rent, it came out about $600, they charge if you need to resize. I went in today to get my measurements taken for my best friend's wedding which will be in San Francisco. I am not renting from Black Tie Affair, still they offered me great service and friendly conversation. Michael took my measurements, had me try on a tux with said measurements, asked my how I felt about the fit, made adjustments to my preference, and retook my measurements. Black tie affair was a big relief after going to celebrity tuxedo a couple times beforehand. The difference between the two are amazing. Scheduling: I did some research and checked their website to see that they recommend appointments. So I called them at around 9:05 AM (they opened at 9 that day) but there was no answer. So I decided to take the risk and make the trip to Kaimuki (I live in Waipahu) in hopes that they wouldn't be busy. They had one customer in front of me, but the person doing the fittings suggested that I make an appointment because he already had another appointment after the current customer. I was worried that I'd have to schedule an appointment for a later date, wasting my trip there. However, he told me that he could schedule me for a couple of hours later, letting me have lunch with my girl and come back on time where he was ready for me. Service: The man started off by filling out a form for the measurements that I already knew, and those that I didn't know, he measured for me. It was quick and easy. He then told me to choose a jacket that I liked from the store's selection. Instead of just following what I thought I wanted, he shared his expertise and told me what would look better on me and definitely sold both me and my girlfriend. He also let me try on jackets and all other pieces of the tux to make sure that the measurements he made were correct, and made more adjustments. After that, we just paid and went on our way. Pricing: the entire package which included the jacket, vest, shirt, pants, cufflinks and shoes. The grand total came out to be less than $150, where it would cost me $200+ at celebrity. All in all, Black Tie Affair is supreme in organization and service. Their appointment system lets keeps you from wasting time waiting there and allows you to make use of your time in the area. Speaking of which, the location was a bit far considering I live in Waipahu, but is decently practical considering the majority of proms and weddings will be taking place in the Waikiki area, just a few minutes away. Even with the hour or two wait for our appointment after walking in, it seemed to go by a lot faster than all of my times at celebrity tux waiting in line. I did find out that celebrity has an appointment only system nowadays, but I double checked it and they're booked for about a week. So you could say that BTA is still much more time efficient. The service was also much better, considering that it was much more one on one and less of making me just a customer that they have to get through. This will be my last time needing a tux until weddings start coming up, but I will definitely remember to go to BTA when the time comes again. read more

Very impressed with Karen and the shop. Needed a tux for an out of state event for my son so he'd need to rent it for a week. Checked with the other tux rental places and found the prices to be very high. Was thinking about just buying him one when I looked on YELP and found good reviews on the Black Tie Affair. Black TIe Affair has assisted my family for 3 weddings and have never disappointed. I will admit tho that I did try another tuxedo shop(located off of Ward Ave) at first because I heard from a classmate that they were good. BIG MISTAKE! They are under new ownership and the employees there didn't speak English well and even though I emailed the owner what I was coming in for, when I got there she had no clue to who I was and at one point couldn't find my forms that I had filled out about a month earlier. This left me, my fiance and family really worried and concerned so I decided to go with another tuxedo shop since a wedding is a huge occasion and a once-in-a-lifetime event. Before going to Black Tie, I did look into other tuxedo shops like: Phil's Milaniko Tuxedo, Celebrity Tuxedo, Men's Warehouse(no employee greeted us or asked if we needed any help so we left) and Macy's Tuxedo. I only did this because you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket, you want to see what is out there and take your time making decisions. Also, with some of these shops you pick the tuxedo you want, they measure you but you don't pick up the tuxedos until a couple of days before your wedding. I'm the type of guy that wants to try it on and see how it will look or probably look. I didn't like the fact of leaving it up to chance and not having it fit correctly. I contacted Mike from Black Tie Affair and made an appointment to come down and get measured and fitted(most shops will only take your measurements but you won't get fitted, these are two different things and the fitted aspect is just as important). Mike and his wife(Karen) really know what they are doing and are very professional. I mentioned to Mike that my family came here for my brother's wedding tuxedos about 5 years ago and within no time Mike pulled out the form that I had filled out with all my measurements! In a day and age where computers are used to keep track of things, having a hard copy with my info was shocking, a good shock that is. Needless to say, I was very surprised and impressed at how well organized they were. Mike explains things so you, as the groom, so you understand what you need to visualize and if that is the look and style you are going for. I didn't see a light gray tuxedo that I wanted but was able to choose from a catalog that they provided. Mike let me try on a light gray tuxedo to show me how it will most likely look with everything on. I was ecstatic that I was finally getting the tuxedos that I felt was right for myself and my wedding party. If I could give only one piece of advice to all those grooms out there, start with Black Tie Affair and then look at other tuxedo shops. You won't feel too stressed out with finding a tuxedo because you know you can always go back to this shop and will be in good hands. Even my fiance mentioned that we should've started with them. You want to have peace of mind, considering that there are a lot of things to be done for a wedding. I felt that the prices for the tuxedo rentals were very reasonable since they were shipped from the mainland and for the alterations. Mike and Karen make you schedule another final fitting during the week of your wedding and, if any, they make minor alterations to the tuxedo(s) depending if the mainland shop followed the measurements correctly. I mentioned "peace of mind" earlier and that's what you are getting from Black Tie Affair. I hope this has been a helpful review for all those grooms and groomsmen out there. Michael took his time with me and not just used the tape measure, but suited me up and he took his time to get all the measurements right.
