Last minute suit rentals for my family members who needed to attend my mother's funeral (in 6 days). I looked into quotes for two places, and this was the best and most reasonable. He also got back to me right away via email - not sure about the complaints about unresponsiveness. The store was spacious and clean, and very conveniently located in a Kaimuki shopping plaza. An hour fitting is about $1.50 for parking fees which are paid via credit card. They also provide shoe rentals for $20 if needed (we didn't opt for this but very reasonable pricing!). Shopping around for a tuxedo is seemingly getting more and more difficult on Oahu with only a handful of choices at our disposal. I decided to make an appointment at Black Tie Affair when it was about 2-3 months prior to our wedding. My brother had gone here way back in the day, we're talking 20+ years ago to rent a very specific tuxedo with eastern influence, worn by Jet Li in one of his many films. He loved it so much he talks about it to this day and wants to get one custom made the next time he goes on vacation. For myself, however, I was looking for a bit more of a classic look with a little modern flare. I walked in asking them to make me look like John Wick and so they did. We went all black and had to go with the ultra slim pants to compliment my skinny legs. It was a fun fitting and we definitely joked around about how tight everything was and how hot it would be in the mid afternoon of a summer day, but that's ultimately part of the wedding experience and it really wasn't all that bad if I'm being honest. After the fitting, I believe I confirmed my selection a week or two following and decided to go with my own tie and dress shirt which turned out to be the right call. Pricing was in fact probably the best I've seen out of the three places I had visited. My fiancee, however, was seemingly not very fond of the all black look so on the day of the wedding I brought my custom tailored white dress shirt and black tie with the intent of changing into all black once we were in the AC at the reception. Turns out that it wasn't in the cards for a wardrobe change so I stuck with what my wife ended up liking and that's that, no regrets. I've seen some of the photos guests were taking and I think it turned out great. Pick up is a day prior to your event and you can schedule dropoff at the time of pickup for the day following your event. Don't forget to bring a mask before heading over for your appointments. They used to have really good service, but very hard to get in contact with. One will have to email and this could take up to a week to get a response. There is another place that does actual try on the suit for size. This place is no longer the only shop that does this type of fitting. VOWs will have the suits for you to try on as well. Sometimes they're able to fit you in if needed (at Vows). I think service has gone down at Black Tie. It is a husband and wife business. Maybe the times we called was to overwhelming for them. My boyfriend and I came here for his tuxedo fitting since his friend's wedding will be in a few months from now. We arrived at the shop around 1:30pm and had to wait outside the door until an employee came to open the door. As the door was opened for us, we had our temperatures checked and my boyfriend had to show his ID for his appointment. I liked how all the chairs are pretty spaced out from each other but sadly I could not sit directly next to my boyfriend haha. In today's world of instant everything, it's sometimes quite enjoyable (as Dean Jagger says) to spend time in good conversations while conducting business at a gentlemanly pace. This point occurred to me after spending an equally enjoyable 2 hours and 33 minutes getting fitted for a formal tuxedo for an upcoming wedding. The proprietor Mike was a consummate professional in all things associated with the very best in men's formal wear. It was comforting to listen to his sage advice and it was amusing to hear his incredible stories of "wedding stories " and tales of a bygone Hawaiian era. In fact it was his amazing and entertaining stories of celebrities, classical musicians, Stradivarius instruments, and local artists that made the time fly by so quickly. Mike provided expert advice on style, fit, wear, and accouterments. His shop sports a wide variety of styles and options but I appreciated that he also carried some of the more traditional fashions. I came away relaxed and pleased with the selections and with the customer service which was unparalleled in my experience. He took care of everything and I don't even need to clean the suit before returning. Totally world class, and my go-to shop from now on. Sooo, this place is weird.. Let's see, where to begin. Maybe with the complete odd ball owner/employee/gatekeeper whose opening salvo when you enter the store is zero eye contact and a mirthless: "Wait outside." Mind you, this is after you've gone to the trouble of requesting, in writing, an appointment, via email. That's right folks, the only way you can procure an appointment , for the two hours a week they operate, is by opening up that laptop to pen a letter. I'm surprised they didn't ask for a 650 character application, hand delivered by messenger to the store, to kick things off. If you call their number it basically says they are not there to help you by phone. Fabulous. Perhaps they are observant Amish and avoid speaking on telephones. Or, or, maybe they're just nuts. Answer the phone people, it won't kill you. Once you are deigned worthy of entering the store they proceed to sell you a pretty basic overpriced Men's warehouse tux with all the joyless fanfare a shoe salesman can muster when he hands you a shoebox dug up from the back. Awesome stuff. After some fussing around to hem your pants you're done. But not until they make sure you know, that the only way to pick up your item, is, You guessed it! Writing another email. Came here to get fitted for a suit for my friend's wedding. The staff that work here are really nice and personable. Pros: -friendly staff -they were very fast and efficient. They could do my measurement and provided it back the next day! Really impressive. Cons: -depending on what time you come, the Parkin lot area can be pretty miserable. I came here twice during the work week. The first time I arrived around 11am and it was impossible to find parking anywhere in the lot. However, the second time I came, I arrived around 3:30pm and the lot had tons of open parking spaces, so plan ahead! -there is a fee to pay in the parking lot. Short version - customer service is outstanding and my tux rental came out less than what I got quoted at MW and the fit was also better and looked a lot better! We decided to come here after seeing the amazing Yelp reviews to possibly switch our tux rental to this place after not being so thrilled about our experience at Men's Wearhouse (it wasn't BAD, just not great). I sent an email to Black Tie Affair to inquire about setting up an appointment and received a call back from the owner that same day and got an appointment. The owner gave me parking instructions prior to ending the phone call, which we found very helpful because Maps did take us to the shop but wasn't necessarily how you get into the parking space. Parking entrance is on 12th (not Harding) and you will turn in between Hokkaido Ramen and 12th Ave Diner. You will need to take a ticket and I believe it was $0.75/hour. I paid a total of $1.50 for parking. On our appointment day, I was pleased to see that they're doing an amazing job at following appropriate COVID-19 precautions. Temperature checks, and they monitor the amount of people allowed in the shop at a time. We met with the owner and he did my fiancé's fitting and right off the bat, our experience and customer service was astounding! He explained everything thoroughly to us and made sure all our questions were answered! He also gave us some helpful tips/suggestions on how we could style the groom and groomsmen differently. He let my fiancé try on different things just so we could see how it looked. We appreciate all the help we received! My fiancé and I are trying to enjoy every step of planning for our wedding and who would have thought something as simple as where we went for our tux fitting made such a difference - also, your groomsmen would also be coming for their fitting as well so making sure to choose somewhere they would also feel comfortable is something to consider! When our guys showed up for their appointments, they stood outside for 20-30 minutes just hoping someone opens the door. (Email only). He was very friendly, courteous, and straightforward, and extremely informative. He talked about the tuxedo trends and what, and how these younger generation individuals are renting different color tuxedos that his store never carries and need to be special ordered. Well, I'm not exactly younger generation, but I'm always a traditionalist. Black coat, black tie, gray vest. Suit me up! He was happy to hear that. I tried on a few styles and colors, and already have a decision made, but I still want to do more research. He told me it'll cost only $147 and change (tax included) to rent the whole tux. Sounds great! I remember renting a tux almost 20 years ago for $99 plus tax. And I haven't returned it yet lol. Black Tie Affair is definitely a great place to rent a tux for any occasion or event. This store is located in Kaimuki inside the paid parking lot between 12th and 11th Avenues, next to Territorial Savings Bank. The lot is 75 cents an hour, which is exactly the same as the metered stalls outside and across the lot. Michael is very easy going, honest, and professional. The prices are very reasonable. When I arrived, I quickly realized this is a mom and pop kind of place. The couple who works here were already servicing people so I had to wait 20 minutes beyond my appointment time. I was little frustrated that they couldn't have me fill out their short form while I was waiting or my younger could have been trying out different sizes.
