Black Walnut Cafe was exactly what I needed--- a simple breakfast without all of the extras. The mimosa flight was the perfect morning starter. The bacon deviled eggs were very tasty and not your typical deviled eggs. This is one of this restaurants where you pay for your food upfront and then it's brought to the table. Because of this, the pricing seemed a little more expensive than the norm. Overall, it was a solid experience and I'd be open to trying it again. read more

Absolutely a great choice for dining w kids. This restaurant is cozy, great variety of food for picky palates and service is phenomenal. Haven't been to BW since the SL location closed down years ago. We tried this for brunch one day, and most recently for dinner. Everyone was happy with their meals. Black Walnut for lunch was nice! The food is pretty consistent. I wouldn't say it's fine dining but I do enjoy coming here for the occasional lunch on a weekday or brunch on a weekend. Today I tried their new three course meal special (sorry I didn't take a picture of the dessert). The crawfish Queso was really good! 7/10 Creamy and the crawfish wasn't over cooked. I'd give the chicken parm a 5/10 so nothing to write home about but again, this isn't your finest dining spot. However, my friend's pot roast grilled cheese did look amazing and she said it was fantastic. Service is counter and I didn't think it stood out but this isn't a full service place. I would give this place a little makeover if I were the owner because I think the ambiance left a lot to be desired. I took my spouse here for Father's Day this year since then he's returned multiple times to enjoy the steak and eggs dish. We love the walk up & order situation, still haven't tried the boozy shakes yet but looking forward to them. Abagail makes a great margarita and espresso martini! I enjoy stopping in just for a drink & dessert. For brunch, my favorite meal is an omelette with hollandaise sauce on the side. My kids love the pancakes. Salads are my lunch of choice usually. Shrimp with zoodles was another one of my favorite main entrees though I'm not sure they still offer this. Did takeout from this restaurant last week, which they are doing great. Did curb-side pick up, and they were ready outside when I pulled up. However, they do charge an additional 5% packaging fee, which I found unusual. There was also a lot of extraneous packaging, such as wrapping the breadsticks which while thoughtful, was also unnecessary. In terms of food, we ordered the pot roast and fish tacos, along with a small tomato soup. The pot roast was the highlight of the meal, and the meat was extremely tender, which was great. We've been going here for 10 years. Today is probably the last time. Service was fine but the food was crap. Scrambled eggs tasted horrible and were soupy with oil or butter or whatever. Potatoes were undercooked. Chicken sausage had no flavor except for the parts they burned. To be fair, the bacon and pancakes were terrific. We also ordered the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. This place never fails me! I always go to the Katy location. It is definitely a family vibe for Sunday brunch. For some reason, when I am out for brunch, I prefer big hearty meals. Well Black Walnut Cafe in Katy, TX always delivers! The outside patio with heat lamps is perfect for the cooler months. Aside from your meal and bar beverage being brought to your table, it is fully self-service. But you know this walking in. So if you are seeking a pampered experience, that is not the setup here. You walk in and place your order at the register, take a number, get your non-alcohol beverages from the machine(s) and take a seat. Your order is then brought to your table by waitstaff. Then dig in to the goodness! There is ample parking directly in front of the building. The Sunday brunch crowd starts about 12:30 (ish). The last couple of times we ate here we have not had the best food. I previously had a salad with salmon and had to send it back so they could cook the salmon more. This time I ordered quesadillas and they were hard and crunchy and didn't even look much like a tortilla. (I get them a lot here and they are usually great). My husband got a Turkey club sandwich and the fries were mushy and greasy. Low quality overall. It used to be delicious. We talked to the very busy and hard working manager. At this restaurant, as you walk in, you take a menu while standing in line, then order your food, pay for it, then you find a place to sit. Cafeteria style, but much classier. The ambiance of the Black Walnut Café is wonderful. It is a very very clean place. That's always top of my list. I had an opportunity to talk to Siling, one of the managers and she was just a delight. I was able to get the history of the restaurant. The restaurant has quite the variety of food and drink, and at a reasonable price. My gluten free daughter in law had options, which made me happy. Now, I ordered myself the lobster eggs Benedict and while the lobster portion was plentiful, the eggs were definitely overdone. It was more like hard boiled eggs. (It's a good thing I like hard boiled eggs as well) but I was disappointed. The grits I ordered with it was just phenomenal and a good sized portion at that. All in all, I enjoyed the food there ( even got a cannoli to go ) . Next time I'm in town, I would not hesitate to come back to try some of the salads they offer. read more

My first time here. Was in town so decided to give it a try with my friends. Pretty easy to order, don't have to wait to be seated. We ordered a side salad, tomato basil soup, big plate (eggs, potatoes, bacon and toast) and two coffee. My friends ordered strawberry shortbread, coffee, big plate, and gelato too. First, let me say that we have been coming here for years, mainly for their Eggs Benedict (lobster, Nashville chicken, but the old salmon was my favorite) and the grits. Recently though, we've noticed the portions getting smaller and the quality of the food declining. The grits are now more watery and the size of the Eggs Benedict are substantially smaller than I remember. This has happened a couple of times now, so I'm guessing shrinkflation has gotten to them too. If this place was the same price as Denny's or IHOP, i would understand. I love this cute little cafe and love that it's right around the corner from my house. My one issue is that they don't take cash. Nope. Don't even try. Corporate policy. The manager was a very nice man, a stand up guy. He tried to buy my tea after I had a little "granny Karen" moment when I tried to pay for my tea with cash. I was heard to quote: "This note is legal tender for all debts public and private."... And those aren't just empty words. There's a federal law, 31 USC Section 5103, to back it up. Professional and friendly staff at this Black Walnut Cafe location. Celebrated my wife's birthday with 25 family and friends. The workers were all smiles and seemed to really enjoy what they are doing. Food arrived timely and the General Manager Doug was very appreciative and available for any challenges that may have come up. Very clean restrooms. This location definitely lives up to the expectations of Black Walnuts loyal customers and makes the ones that are not providing the experience standout. We have been to this restaurant 4 times in the last week and haven't seen a frown yet. A smiling staff makes the world of difference. Sauce went well with it..very thick for a salad. It also came with a piece of garlic bread that was dry and had a dusting of garlic flavor on top. I ordered here a few times before. I've known of Black Walnut Café's existence for quite a while, but have never taken the opportunity to visit. I'm glad I finally did! First off, they're doing a stellar job in minimizing contact during this pandemic and that's such a relief to see. When you order, your order is taken at a counter, then you're given a pager, then you take a seat and your stuff is brought out to you. Everything came out quickly and was delicious! Everything on my sandwich was fresh and the bacon was thick and flavorful. I got zucchini on the side and it was well flavored and cooked - not slimy at all! Their orange juice is fresh and delicious! The French toast is absolutely wonderful. I got a hint of orange...maybe in the syrup? Anyone else pick up on that? So good! I really dig the atmosphere as well. It feels like an escape and I enjoyed being there. I'd definitely go back again! Edit: And I did! I was craving chicken Parmesan today when I remembered Black Walnut Café on offer. We visited again today and everything was wonderful - again! We had chicken fried steak and chicken Parmesan and finished off with the blackout cake. If you have a chocolate craving, that cake will do it for you for sure! The chicken fried steak is well seasoned and tender. I loved the chicken parm because despite it being over fettuccine Alfredo the spinach makes you feel just a little less guilty! Their old fashioned was good as well; it was very orange forward. There was a mixup with my order. I think the cashier thought I wanted shrimp Alfredo because I was asking if the chicken parm was over Alfredo, so they brought out shrimp alfredo. But they had it fixed lickety split!
