Will definitely come back to this one. Was worth the move to Westwood just to be in proximity. I am a beer aficionado, and having traveled the world always looking for the best beer places, I can finally say I found the best in LA. Not yet the best in the world I've been too, but very close. But more importantly, the owner (Shayan) is extremely helpful. me and my wife came in with a list of Dream beers - around 50 of them so far. Shayan knew them all and held a few. As for myself I will not rest before I get my hands on them all (or at least most), but I believe that through this store I can definitely make significant progress. So, so far, 6 beers were scratched off the list - more will come. What a blessed change after having to conform to the likes of BevMo and Total Wine with their un-knowledgable and mostly unhelpful staff. There are lots of great beer shops in Southern California now, and I'll travel for beer any day of the week. But I go nearby to Blackbeard's because of the owner Shayan's old-school understanding of, and appreciation for his customers. I'd go so far as to say that if he were a shoe salesman I'd probably buy my shoes from him, too... As others have said he's quite a curator. He stocks the shelves with delicious local beers, delicious non-local beers, buzzed about beers, and beers that he knows are buzz-worthy but haven't garnered a fan base yet. It's obvious he's passionate about the product as well as the brewers creating it which is of utmost importance to us beer nerds. Also as others have mentioned, if you're looking for something new you can pretty much dream up what you want and let him be your personal shopper for a minute or two. All that said, you won't be shortchanged if another employee is there during your visit- they know their beer very well and love it at least as much as you do, and are happy to help as you shop. If you think you've discovered all the beer, wine and ciders of the world, then visit Blackbeard's and certify that belief for real. Both the place, and the staff have that certain passion that only comes from being truly OCD about things, and in this case (or by the crate, or 6-pack, or singles) the entire staff all have it in abundance. Have yours chilled, room temp. or chilled by the time you swing back after dinner and ready to take it home. More to love in every nook and cranny of the place, like an IPA with real Fruity Pebbles? Even the photos can't quite do it justice because the place keeps updating everything every day. There are things here in generic cans with last-minute labels on them. Parking is street, and some metering, but this is north of the heavy restaurant section of Sawtelle, and closer to the big nursery area, couple of blocks south of Santa Monica Blvd. Regardless of if you're in one of those exploratory moods of beverage roulette, or looking to stack someone's most awesome gift basket of imbibables much more profound than a World Market visit - this is the spot. Diverse selection of microbrews-- some more mainstream, some definitely from smaller breweries. Definitely knowledgeable, although not quite as expert in a few areas... which is okay, given we all have our own preferences! Main issue? I can't make heads-or-tails of the organization inside. If there's a system to the layout it wasn't explained AT ALL to me. And the space is just big enough to justify what they've done, which is to dedicate part of the other side to wine. But the wine selection is not particularly impressive, at least in comparison to the beer! read more

I can't say enough amazing things about Blackbeard's. If you are a beer drinker (or wine drinker for that matter) and on the west side, you need to stop by Blackbeard's ASAP! Not only is the selection incredible in terms of variety - literally any and every style you can imagine, but it honestly feels like they get 10-20 new beers each week. Each beer has a wonderful write up as well, so you have a great sense of what beer you are buying if you are new to the beer world. Definitely helpful, as many cans/bottles don't really specify what flavors you can expect to experience when drinking. Besides the incredible selection, the owner Shayan is absolutely amazing. One of the most genuine and good-hearted guys I have ever met. Always willing to have a conversation and steer you in the right direction of beers you may enjoy. Never do you feel like you'll be pressured into buying something at a high price point or anything like that - he genuinely wants you to find something you will enjoy. Can't say enough good about Blackbeard's. Shayan and his staff make Blackbeard's an incredibly friendly spot and a go-to for the Sawtelle neighborhood for your beer and wine needs. Although they're off the 'main' strip, they're absolutely worth the walk up towards Santa Monica/Sawtelle. Not sure what you want? The staff will help you figure out something good according to your tastes and give you their recommendations. If you're not into talking, virtually every beer/wine is labelled with its flavors/type/etc. If you want something specific, they can go as far as order some for you. Generally though, they mostly have anything you can think of, they have a stellar selection of beer and wine to choose from. They have an extensive beer selection. Never seen so many different types of beer in a store before. I don't typically drink beer, but figured I'd go in and check it out since it's less than a block from where I live and I didn't even know this place existed! I'm a wine, cocktail, and whisky drinker, but was intrigued by all the various beers they had. While browsing, the staff asked if I needed help or recommendations twice - super attentive. Thanks! I ended up getting this local beer from Paso Robles, a mango flavored IPA. Not bad. Oh, for those that don't drink beer, they also have champagne, wine, and sake! read more

Shayan and his team have swiftly integrated themselves into our community - because let's be real, what bring a community together better than craft beer and curated wine. Shayan is always available to give me recommendations, and after ~10 different recommendations so far he has not let me down a single time. They have such a wide array of options - you'll be able to find anything that tickles your fancy. If you don't know what you want, Shayan will figure out your fancy and tickle it for you. Best selection of craft beer anywhere on the west side! They also sell wine, hard seltzer/kombucha, and a variety of snacks. The owner and staff are great - very helpful and always have great suggestions for what to try. Right now they are letting in 5 people at a time and requiring masks (bring your own) and gloves (provided at the door). read more

Stellar selection of beer, wine, and other spirits with an even more stellar staff. They have all kinds of beverages to choose from and I haven't been disappointed yet. My bf lives close by so we frequent the place whenever I'm in town. Every time I've gone in the staff is extremely welcoming and eager to help. They want to know what you want so that they can make sure you get the best they have to offer. I've recently discovered a couple of exciting sections, both in the back right corner once you enter the store. On the rack to the right, they have discounted beverages if you're looking for a deal. On the shelf facing the fridge at the back of the store, they have singles of various beers that they broke open to try. It's amazing how knowledgable they are about all of their inventory, especially since they have such a wide variety! Oops sorry for not finishing my draft for a while, Shayan. lol. Been meaning to give this business 5 stars for a while. So Blackbeard is a great place to go if you enjoy drinking all kinds of alcohol and enjoy discovering new ones along with finding your rare beers. My partner came in when they first opened and noticed the store didn't have her favorite beer, Kawaba. We had nothing to worry though as the store quickly ordered some and we've been able to get Kawaba all the time since then and we really appreciate that. :) Also, if you wanna impress a host at a house party, go here! Be a crowd pleaser and bring in some good craft beers for everybody. Since we live in the neighborhood, it's become routine to drop by to say hi and get a cool new beer or cool new beer snacks each time. :) They have beer you'd never find else where too! Blackbeards is one of the best beer as wine shops I've ever found. I don't review places on Yelp that often but this place is worth the time. The shop consistently has a fresh selection of rotating craft beers and wines as well as all the staples you might expect. Every single time I've walked in no matter how busy, I've been greeted with an offer to help me find whatever I'm looking for (I recommend you take them up on this service) and I continue to be blown away at the sincerity and depth of the knowledge that gets shared. One upswing to living in a rapidly growing neighborhood is that the businesses of massive convenience begin arriving. While there is a liquor store ducked away down Sawtelle, the opening of Blackbeard's Crafts has been such a welcome addition! The prices here are actually very reasonable for the craft beer crowd. And the selection is extensive without seeming overwhelming. I've stopped in twice now and left with beers that I would definitely never find at the grocery store. The staff here is very helpful. Their recommendations have been spot on and very honest about what you're purchasing. I love that. I haven't ventured onto the other side of the store to purchase wines yet, but I did a quick walk on my last trip and definitely saw a few things that caught my eye. I'll be back. read more

They get new, incredible shipments regularly, and social media is the first place to see what's newly in stock. Step 2: Get to Blackbeard's. Look, I love myself some suds, so I've experienced what the Westside has to offer in terms of places to grab yourself a cold one. Generally, you're stuck with either decent variety and a pretentious beer buyer... or you've found a place that'll talk your ear off about whiskey and happens to sell a bit of beer on the side. Absolutely LOVE this place! Amazing selection of beer, cider & wine! My husband and I could easily spend an hour there just trying to pick a few out to take home. And that's just the time looking at everything. Then it comes down to Shayan. That guy is the coolest. Super knowledgeable & really friendly. These guys are seriously the best. The staff always have really good recommendations (I don't think they've ever given me a bad one) and clearly love the products they work with. They're always eager to chat with people who come in and find out what you liked, what you didn't like, and are really good at tailoring their recommendations to every person they talk to. The stock is a good size and quality, so you'll definitely be able to find whatever you need for any occasion (or no occasion. Just do what I do and buy individual bottles for yourself. Pour the Rekorderlig ciders over ice cream. Pear cider + caramel ice cream = you won't regret this, I promise.). Prices are great, in line with bigger "discount" stores, and the quality selection and service push them over the top. I really love these guys. It's a little bit of a hike for me to get to them, but for me it's worth it. There's plenty of street parking nearby and even if you have to walk a block or two from your car to the shop, the area is very pretty. read more

This is a legitimate craft brew store. They get the stuff that is rare and sought after. Any beer geek's slice of heaven. I just popped in for some founders breakfast stout that I have been on the hunt for for 2 weeks. The only place westside that sells it. I hadn't been in for a while (porch bombs have filled my fridge) and the inventory was even fiercer than the last time. All the local stuff including Santa Monica Brew a Works; but also whalez like 10barrel cucumber crush. Shayan is an awesome curator. I love this place! I've noticed a few craft beer stores popping up, but not to this extent. I'm a huge IPA fan and the selection is unbelievable. The owner and the employee that was working there were super cool, knowledgable, and gave me a better understanding of the ever-changing world of beer. I was so excited when I found out there was a craft beer spot in West LA, and even more excited to hear that it was on Sawtelle! Checked the place out today, and I absolutely fell in love with the store. I was impressed with the selection and the hospitality, and I can tell that this place will be my go-to for craft beers for years to come. I especially loved the selection of Almanac beers that I had seen at Blackbeard's. Most places like Whole Foods usually stocks 2-3 varieties, but Blackbeard's was well stocked with a nice variety of Almanac brews. Blackbeard's Crafts is an amazing craft beer store. I know they have a great selection of wine as well, but that's never what I go for haha. They obviously aren't competing with other liquor stores and corner markets, because their selection is insane (over 500 beers). They are more on par with Bevmo, but I think they even have more beers than that, and definitely friendlier staff. There is no other place like it in west LA. The owner has created a gem here. Blackbeard's Crafts a pirate themed liquor store, sorry craft beer and wine, on Sawtelle! It's in middle of Sawtelle near The Plan Check. While entering the establishment it took me by surprise. When you first walk in you see the cool theme of black and red walls with a huge chandelier in the middle. The aisles are filled with wine on your left and on your right all the aisles are filled with beer. Also on the right is their huge open refrigerator with skeletons on top and inside is ice cold beer. And in the back left is the register and the right are more refrigerators with a huge awesome wooden chair with skulls on it! As I entered I could hear the chime of a motion sensor alerting the staff someone walked in. And just then Blackbeard himself greeted me with warm welcomes and we started chatting as if we were old friends. Then he found me the greatest Pinot noir pier 39. And it's cheap! I'm no craft beer connoisseur so he found me a great beer. I think his name was Cayenne...? He told he had the most beers than any liquor store this side of the 405 to the beach. I believe him because the beer selection is overwhelming! He also told me they just got their tobacco license but I don't smoke. Checking out was a breeze with the new age tablet POS system. The place is a decent size but they have dedicated the whole store to show off their amazing beer and wine selections. The staff is incredibly friendly and the store is like an awesome pirate den full of booty. If you're looking for a nice craft beer/cider selection AND an employee who isn't a snob, this place is for you! I stopped by this location on my way to Plan Check. It used to be another store but I noticed that the storefront was different and the interiors looked cool, so I was lured in. I LOVE cider but I'm not an expert. The employee (I'm sorry, I forgot your name... or I didn't ask what your name was) was very kind and helped me choose a cider that I would love based off of my requests. Some of the past stores like these had employees who expected the customers to know their sh*t, so it was nice to walk out with a smile on my face instead of feeling awkward and embarrassed. read more
