Blackbird Cafe is one of my favorite Long Beach breakfast spots! It's nestled in a residential neighborhood in/near Bixby Knolls. I've been coming here for many years, and know that it can take awhile to be seated on weekends. So, it's a fave spot for me to come by myself or with a friend or two on weekdays I happen to be free. The restaurant isn't very large, but has about 10 tables inside + bar seating, and a handful of patio tables available. Staff is friendly and attentive. The menu offers a wide selection of traditional and mexican style breakfast foods. My favorite item is the Spicy Mexican Omelette, as a scramble, with shrimp added. Blackbird IS NOT stingy with the shrimp, and the size and quality of the shrimp is amazing. My only call out here is that they seem to have shifted to mashed avocado, which tasted fine, but had a slightly strange texture for me. I've also had the French toast, which is simple and tasty. I came here a few years ago. I forgot with who and I thought I wrote a review but I guess not. So I came here 19 days ago with a guy friend who wanted to thank me for walking his dog. I forgot what he got... a burrito? Or the Juan Wayne! I got the Huevos Rancheros! Crispy, savory, mouth watering and perfect amount of spice. I think I tried the country fried steak last time. My first time at Blackbird after hearing so many good things about them. The inside gives local hole-in-the-wall vibes: nothing fancy just a simple space to sit and enjoy your food. I sat outside and loved the people watching and making friends with the pup of the people sat across from me. The menu has great variety and as an eggs benedict aficionado I loved all the options I had! I ended up settling on the Dos Caballeros with a few substitutions: bacon for the chorizo and regular hollandaise sauce in place of the spicy sauce. My server handled the substitions without a blink of the eye - love a place that does what it can to make food you'll love! Food came out surprisingly quickly despite the St. Paddy's day rush. Eggs were poached perfectly soft, just as I asked. The benedict was very tasty. If I were going to nitpick I'd say the hollandaise was a little thin, but for the value of this meal I really can't complain. Hashbrowns were tasty. Food was very yummy-but pricey for what it is. My review is mostly due to the fact that it took over an hour from sitting to receiving food. The servers were super nice but obviously overwhelmed and the entire meal felt tense and awkward because of it. The were dealing with some internet issues but instead of communicating that and moving on, all the staff seemed preoccupied at the computers. We sat down and it took 20 minutes for us to get a high chair for my baby(my husband had to go find someone because no one even checked on us for drinks). This place is pretty small, cozy, with both inside and some outdoor/streetside seating. I've eaten here a few times in the past 6 months, and overall it's been very good, with friendly and attentive service. On my last visit I had Virginia Country Club sandwich, add avocado, with fries (good seasoned fries, sando was good but not double decker, better than some others in the area, but not mindblowing). My lady had a nice shrimp and chorizo omelette (big & hearty, great flavor, with spinach and cheese, and a generous side of tater tots). She's also enjoyed the shrimp Lorraine omelette. As always we start with the food, I ordered a breakfast bowl, a mimosa and a Bloody Mary. Suffice to say after the drinks I don't remember the details of the bowl other than it had egg avocado and beans. It was good and definitely a LOT. Took the other half home. The service was super friendly and prompt. They always made sure we had what we needed and with smiles and friendly interaction. The ambiance inside was a little cold so I think outside would have been better but overall not noisy and quaint. Would definitely recommend for drinks and food! I have been going to Blackbird on and off for years and introduced this cute little cafe to family and friends. I always order my tried and true breakfast burrito. It is a basic breakfast burrito but it has always been very comforting. If you have dogs they do have a little outdoor area where they are welcomed. The staff adored my dog when I brought him and one even came up to share dog photos with us. Things to be mindful is that it does get busy for brunch on weekends so anticipate a little bit of a wait. Small local spot in LBC. A big variety of options. A mixture of Mexican and American plates. The food was out quick. Hubby ordered the breakfast burrito. He said it was good, but nothing special. But he did like that it was a decent size. I wish the hash browns were cooked more to get that crispiness on it. The plate itself was good. It comes on top of tostadas with a smear of black beans. It's been awhile since I've been here. I ordered their Juan Wayne. It starts with 3 extra crispy corn tortillas which stays crispy throughout. Topped with their delish barbacoa, eggs and cheese. I skipped the sour cream. It also comes with a side of bacon and sausage. The sausage was tasty and wish they had another one ;) I opted for the fruit. There was plenty of food and reasonably priced. Service was decent. The server was nice but she could have been more attentive instead of popping her head to see if I was ok. Sat outside with the noisy traffic, but I like to sit outside. They are renovating their inside with a bigger kitchen. It is a small restaurant so make sure your whole party is there because they won't seat you till everybody is there. A few weeks ago, I tried the Blackbird Cafe for the first time after hearing about it for years. I had the Poutine Tots--barbacoa beef, cheese, hollandaise sauce, topped with cilantro, fresh jalapeño, tomato, and onion. It was amazing. The service was excellent, and the waitstaff was super friendly. My only complaint was that the decaf coffee had a burnt taste, like it had been brewed hours ago. I decided to go back to the Blackbird and ordered the Poutine Tots again. This time, however, there was hardly any barbacoa beef and very little hollandaise sauce. While it still tasted good, it was nowhere near as good as my first visit. The decaf coffee was fine this time. The inconsistency of the service at Blackbird shows that you may receive a significantly different experience from one visit to the next. I wish I knew which days the chef who made the Poutine Tots on my first visit works, so I could return only on those days. read more

Ok, the food is good. I ordered the Juan Wayne but the sausage they gave me was not even cooked. I brought this to the attention of the waitress and they brought me a cooked sausage. But who does that? Lol We waited a long time to be seated. I think their seating process needs some improvement. Because we were a party of three all of these other people were seated before us, even though they arrived after us. I think a 90 minute dining policy for a place that small would help. Also, after we were finally seated, we were asked if we would mind moving outside. We refused. Came earlier today because we were going to be in the Long Beach area and decided to grab a bite before going to the Aquarium. This place is located near some residential streets (where we parked) and offers indoor and outdoor seating. This place looks small on the inside but there are two rooms that can sit maybe 50 or more people at one time and includes bar seating. My husband got the Cubano Benedict (has pork, ham, and cheese) along with one side of pancake because he wanted to try it. He liked the pancake, which was slightly sweet and ate it without maple syrup. As far as the benedict goes, he can't remember how he felt while eating it! (It also doesn't help he's making cookies as I'm writing this and asking him questions about the food!)...so I'll leave it at that.... I got the half soup and sandwich (tomato soup and a BLT). I really liked my meal which also came with chips and a garlicy type of dip. The BLT had a lot of crisp lettuce in it, which I love! And crispy bacon! The soup was also homemade and delicious (even when I dipped my sandwich in it). The only 'blah' thing about this dish were the chips and the dip. I didn't care for them (thought they could be crispier, and more flavorful), and I didn't care for the dip. read more

Blackbird was one of my favorite go to spots. The food was always fresh and creative. It had been a few years since I last visited the restaurant. I came in on a Sunday (I believe) and to my surprise there was no line. Excited, my daughter and I quickly were seated and we anxious to experience nostalgia. The restaurant is currently thru renovations which didn't bother me. However, we did have an insect swiftly crawl between our table. I gave it a pass due to renovations. The food took a bit to come out and when it did it was far from what we anticipated. The food was bland with no flavor at all. The customer services had gone down tremendously. We didn't even put dents in our food. We ended up paying the bill and leaving. Unfortunately, what was once our favorite place to eat is no longer. I wouldn't say don't try this place.
