Quaint and artsy kinda vibe with art on the walls for sale as well as other little decorative items and cute earrings at the counter. We were seated right away inside on a Friday morning. Great breakfast!! Everyone enjoyed their meal. So many amazing looking options, can't wait to go back. I ordered the El Luchador, which was pretty dang amazing. The coffee which was very smooth and fresh, from a local roaster. Service was most excellent! Very attentive & friendly, like being her personal guest. Wish I'd gotten her name, so was so great. Mannnn how bad I wanted to like this place!!!! it wasn't that it was awful because it's not but for the reviews and from what I remembered years back... I thought it was supposed to be super yummmmmmm BUT it wasn't. It was "ok". I ordered the tortilla with beans and barbacao.... It was dry and even with the sauce. I guess I expected this place to wow me with the reviews and all but it didn't. Hubs felt the same way so I guess no coming back. Maybe they are known for their pancakes and waffles? I didn't feel rushed while eating, and I liked that the café gave us enough space to enjoy our food without feeling crowded. Even though I've only been there once before writing this review, I never doubted that the experience was going to turn out the way I hoped it would. One thing that stood out to me was how many teenagers I saw there. It honestly made sense because the whole place has this lively, youthful energy that teenagers would enjoy a lot. The contemporary style, the comfortable seating, and the relaxed vibe make it feel like a spot where teenagers can hang out, eat something good, and feel like they're in a place that matches their creative side. Stopped by here for breakfast before a flight and we were pretty satisfied. We got two plates and shared. Portions were decently sized. I thought the benedict we had was super unique and quite tasty. It had chorizo on top of a sopes with hollandaise sauce. The monte cristo for me was sorta of a miss. maybe i'm not a monte cristo kinda guy but it was okay. I brought my 4 breakfast buddies here for the first time this morning and we were easily seated at 8:30. Lydia was friendly and suggested her favs from the menu when I asked her for suggestions. I love the variety on the menu and the prices are very reasonable in today's economy. I had the shrimp lorraine omlette which was delightful. The shrimp was perfectly grilled and decent size. I would order it again but I'm curious to try other items on the menu. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos this time. The cafe has been open for 14 years and is located in California Heights area of LB. A nice retro diner ambiance. Ample street parking on Orange when I arrived. My boyfriend and I came in around 11am. We noticed we came in way before this couple and sat before them, once they sat down someone got to them immediately and took their order for food. we waited 15 minutes and the waitress kept passing us by before someone took our order for food and by time we got to ordering the couple and that came in after us already got their food so we were confused as to why they kept passing us by. we wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and maybe were short staff but then we waited another 15 minutes for our food only for it to be lukewarm almost cold, we were really hungry so at that point we didn't care. This was my first time at this little local gem in LB and I was pleasantly surprised with everything. The service was very good, I brought my dog since it was dog friendly so the patio was perfect anyways as it was a gorgeous day. The food was super delicious and the portions were definitely on the bigger side. My foodie partner got the Dos Caballeros and I got the Juan Wayne. This place used to be good but it went downhill ever since they remodeled it seems like. Maybe they got a new chef? Pancakes sometimes seem raw in the middle, the chicken in the wraps had fat chewy pieces, the breakfast chilequiles burrito changed majorly. Everything is very bland now. The strawberry Lemonade is terrible for $6 I made sure to try my 3 go to meals to be sure and YEAP! Im sure. They're no longer that good restaurant especially for the high prices. read more

Have been wanting to eat here since we moved to the area and finally go to today. Loved the selection and everyone was friendly. We ordered a pancake combo, BLT AND OJ. Love the fact that they have lavender coffee but we didn't try it this time around. The food was delicious and the selection is very tempting. I feel like we got lucky and got the best outdoor seats and the weather was perfect for morning brunch. We had good shade and a nice light breeze. Service at Blackbird is always great. I've been there several times over the years and there are severs who've been there the whole time. The restaurant is doing construction. They've opened up their dining space, but lost the open bar. Right now, it's a little bland - BUT they are still working on it. Normally, I have a breakfast burrito or an Eggs Benedict. These are both fantastic. I was too hot today and had the BLT with avocado. It was okay, not very flavorful, but their fruit was perfect. I appreciate they don't overdo the melon. The older hispanic woman with reddish hair was extremely irritable and gave me horrible treatment. It was a problem me asking if they carried oat milk and I said its okay if they put whole milk even though i'm lactose. Another thing is I was asking what proteins do they have since I have an egg allergy and she was super irritated and rushing me. This was maybe a full minute conversation and she was in a bad mood the moment we first spoke. She may have been the only server working but there was only 3 other tables and parties of two. If she can't handle that then this restaurant needs to hire more servers because I've never had such bad service. I was in the area for work and decided to give this place a try. I wanted to place my order before arriving but their phone was not working. Based on that alone, it is a deduction of a star. I arrived with a colleague and informed them we were on a tight schedule and needed to order quickly and will take the check with our food. Location is definitely small and unsure if it has AC as it was very warm around noon. They had ceiling fans to circulate the air but it was still quite warm. We both ordered sandwiches and fries and the food was good. Portions were decent. We would have enjoyed ourselves more and felt more relaxed if they would have had their phone on the hook to take calls so we could have placed an order. Food was decent. I visited this location on a Saturday around noon. I was put on the waiting list to sit inside and waited approximately 10 min which isn't bad. While I waited I asked to see the menu so I can take advantage of the time. The menu is very extensive but not overwhelming. I was able to read the whole thing and decide what I wanted . Even decided what I would get on my next visit! Our waiter Annette was amazing! She was very helpful and very funny! It's a small location with artwork on the walls and a great ambiance. STEPH JUDGEMENT: A charming neighborhood eatery with good food and great service. Been meaning to try them for years, and finally the hubby and I made our way to Cal Heights for a weekend brunch. It was crowded, as we expected, so we put our name on the list and decided to go for a walk. We got a call sooner than expected--a couple counter seats had opened up and they wanted to know if we wanted them. Nice of them to check! We hoofed it over posthaste to claim our seats. I decided on the Benedict Flower (eggs Benedict with spinach) with hash browns and a coffee. The hubby had the Dos Caballeros with cottage cheese. I'd asked for the hash browns to be extra crispy, but they weren't quite crisp enough for me--otherwise, great food, great coffee, and friendly prompt service. Long wait and everyone in your party has to be there before u can be seated. Waited close to an hour before table was ready and it was packed and there was a line outside. Got lucky there was a bench outside that was partly covered by the table umbrella and i was able to site under its shade bc it was hot outside w/no shade. Street parking only. Food was very yummy-but pricey for what it is. My review is mostly due to the fact that it took over an hour from sitting to receiving food. The servers were super nice but obviously overwhelmed and the entire meal felt tense and awkward because of it. The were dealing with some internet issues but instead of communicating that and moving on, all the staff seemed preoccupied at the computers. We sat down and it took 20 minutes for us to get a high chair for my baby(my husband had to go find someone because no one even checked on us for drinks). I found this place on Yelp and I am so glad I did -- I've been looking for a new brunch part to go to in the Long Beach area. The food is amazing, you need to get the Chilaquiles Torta -- it will change your life. The service was excellent and it definitely made my brunch experience that much better. We didn't have to wait too long for a table -- wait was about 25 min for memorial day weekend. You can choose to sit inside or outside. I will say it's a very cozy atmosphere and a bit tight inside so if it's a nice day out, I do recommend sitting in their patio area. French Toast: 10/10 Classic french toast and the syrup came in a little log cabin shaped glass container, so cute! Blackbird Cafe is one of my favorite Long Beach breakfast spots! It's nestled in a residential neighborhood in/near Bixby Knolls. I've been coming here for many years, and know that it can take awhile to be seated on weekends. So, it's a fave spot for me to come by myself or with a friend or two on weekdays I happen to be free. The restaurant isn't very large, but has about 10 tables inside + bar seating, and a handful of patio tables available. Staff is friendly and attentive. The menu offers a wide selection of traditional and mexican style breakfast foods. My favorite item is the Spicy Mexican Omelette, as a scramble, with shrimp added. Blackbird IS NOT stingy with the shrimp, and the size and quality of the shrimp is amazing. My only call out here is that they seem to have shifted to mashed avocado, which tasted fine, but had a slightly strange texture for me. I've also had the French toast, which is simple and tasty.
