They draw your beers on the spot and put in your food order and when food is ready, they bring it to your table. if you need to order more of anything, head to the bar again to place another order. Excellent pizza and Brussels sprouts. Service was good but I don't like how they (any establishment that serves food that is) asks for a tip when you're ordering at the bar. Not knowing if the food or service would be good, I'm inclined to give zero tip, but when the service and food is good, I want to tip extra. We really enjoyed this restaurant twice last year during a visit. Unfortunately tonight was a huge disappointment. The food was ok and the ambiance is always upbeat, but we had no service to speak of and one person never ever received their meal even after asking 3 times for it. You order on your phone and I ordered first at my table. We had a group of 9. Myself and the other burger ordered never came. My nephew went up to get his son's burger, it's supposed to be delivered to your table. My burger never came and twice I was told "we're very busy". I told them to take my burger off my bill, then maybe 5 minutes later they brought the wrong burger and no fries. We ordered at the bar since our phones just haven't been working well here in Whitefish. Food was excellent- except for the gluten free bun. It was more like a biscuit and just crumbled as you tried to eat your burger. That is the reason for the 4 stars- paid extra and needed up leaving over half of it on the plate. This place has definitely been more consistent lately. As usual the saison was on point. The beer is always fantastic. The food, while not stellar, has been more consistent and a more reasonable value. The vibe has been more family friendly, too. Today they had a really great singer playing acoustic guitar and the music was heard through ALL the in-house speakers, with no audible house music, so...GOOD JOB, THANK YOU. Our first time at Black Star Brewery will be our last. Not greeted or acknowledged at any point. Ordered with a QR code with no one available to ask questions about their menu. Required tip at time of ordering and checking out online. 13 dollar burger was burnt and dry. The meat was at best 1/3 pound. Not a "smash burger" as described and unlike any that I have ever made or ate. It was just burnt. No fries or side came with burger for that price. The food runner appeared annoyed when we asked for ketchup. Napkin holders were dirty. Table and floors were dirty with food debris. Guacamole and chips were good. Iced tea had an off taste. No one came to check on our table (or any other table for that matter). Chopped salad was indeed not "chopped"- just big pieces. Bathroom was dirty. As a former server, I give grace to busy times, short staffed, new menu items, etc. This didn't seem to be the case- just a lack of training, staff, morale, and/or pride for the surroundings. 60 bucks for no service, a dirty restaurant, and subpar food. In theory I want to like this place but so many poor situations happened. We didn't receive half of our orders. We had to go up to the counter and ask 3-4 times. Then the WRONG order was delivered. After the rest of the family finished eating, we decided to just forgo the rest of the order since it still was not delivered. A Togo order that was placed at the beginning of the visit never came. One hour later and we are ready to go with no Togo order. So frustrating. Lastly, none of the cooks were wearing gloves. An upstairs balcony and indoor or outdoor seating. A pleasant surprise to find purse hooks on the tall tables. Enjoyed a beer and some beignets. You must share the beignets, it's a large serving. My pic is after we ate about 3/4s. You order at the bar and they bring to you. The menus looks great and if I base the food on the beignets, then it is excellent. The honey butter is to die for. Great selection of beers. Not just a list of IPAs. Different styles done right. Servers were pleasant and food came out quickly. We visited on a Thursday afternoon. We had a table of 4 sitting upstairs where you can view their big screen. This establishment is modern hip and rustic just like Montana We had the following: Guacamole and chips- the Guacamole was homemade and had an extra lime and spicy flavor that explodes in your mouth. The chips were thin, crisp and salted to perfection. We really enjoyed this appetizer. Enough for 4. House-Cut Fries- golden, homemade, perfect thickness and crispy! On-point! Smash burger: Absolutely heavenly! Crispy burger with lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and a special tangy sauce. The bun was toasted golden. Great meal and was delivered quickly. The staff was all smiles. (Even their ice is amazing!) Note: when you enter, you pick a table that has a number on it and then you go to the bar to order your food and you give them your table number. Yum! Super classy establishment. Good menu - limited but good and food was out super quickly. There is a downstairs area that's contemporary and modern - think metal and leather and floor to ceiling windows. There is a second bar area with seating upstairs. Again - same decor. We stopped in for a quick bite before an afternoon hike and chose a smash burger and quinoa salad. I loved the quinoa salad which was served with a light lemon vinaigrette and quinoa, arugula, grilled rainbow carrots, grilled leaks and bell peppers. Super light and delish. Went to watch the craziness of Halloween. Got a spot at the bar and watched them parade through, lots of fun. While there we had an amazing Italian sandwich, and chicken sandwich. Food was perfect. We walked around for a while to the various areas to decide where to sit and we decided on the small ledge outside since it was a nice night out. The menu offerings sounded good and we ended up sharing a bottle of wine, pesto pizza and a Caesar salad. It was a comfortable place to sit and chat, and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting. This establishment is about a year old. It's 3 stories in all, including a rooftop area. There are bars on both levels one and two. You walk in and place your order at the bar and seat yourself. I had a chopped salad with falafel bites and a glass of CA Chardonnay. The salad is delightfully delicious, and the falafel was not dry and hard, but moist and tasty as it should be. I was happy about this considering the salad cost me $22 and the Char $12. I even tipped the staff. Service was meh, however. I walked in, placed my order at the bar on the ground level. The young lady asked where I was sitting. I told her I wanted to check out the rooftop area. She said she needs a table to put my food order in, but said no big deal, just pick a section facing Railway St. So I went up there but found no tables in the shade, so decided to seat myself on the second level. I approached the bartender behind the bar of the second level and told her that I told her colleague below I was going to be on the rooftop, but wanted to be on this level instead. Her response was, "Oh, but if you said rooftop, then your food will be sent to the rooftop." I asked her if she could possibly communicate to either her colleague or the kitchen that my chopped salad was going to be on the second level instead. She said ok. And then it was fine. My food came to me right where I was. But honestly, who says that to a customer?! People change their minds all the time. Don't make it like you can't accommodate. I also had to ask for water, helped myself to napkins, and that was that. No other service. So you wonder what is the gratuity for? If anything, it should go directly to the kitchen staff as they're the ones working hard back there while the bartenders just twiddle their thumbs not doing a whole lot. Not even a simple check-in. I also heard this same bartender tell a customer she had "no idea what chicken kaarage was." Hmm, sounds like to me, management needs to train its employees on the menu so that all are educated and can speak more wisely to customers. That was a lost sale on that food item. In all, nice open, airy establishment with plenty of seating, a solid menu, beer on tap, and some wines. Front of house service, however is lacking. We went to Blackstar twice during a trip to Whitefish. The food is consistent and very good. The views from the second floor and roof top are great. Unfortunately, their service is terrible. The idea of ordering as you go from a QR code is unique and likely saves them money on staffing. It's also a relaxed way of visiting with whomever you're with and allows each in the group to pay for their own meals without splitting checks. However, other than bringing your food, bussing and cleaning of tables rarely takes place. The smashburger and cowboy chicken were great. If you go, it'll be for the food but know what you're getting re: service. read more

We drove here from Columbia Falls because it was one of the few places open later at night. Most places in town close around 8-9 but we drove and hiked all day and needed something open later. This place is open due to the brewery aspect but they serve the food late as well. The inside definitely caught me off guard as I was expecting a small town local country vibe. However, this place is hipster and definitely gives off big city vibes. There's a bar top to the right with open seating and some couches. There's an upstairs with seating as well. We sat downstairs and you can either go up to the counter and order or scan the barcode and order from your phone. We decided to order from our phone. The water is self serve, which I love but the cups were way too small. The menu was not ideal. You could only look at the menu on your phone to order but they did not tell you what was included. They have 5-6 house made pizzas but do not tell you what ingredients are on it. When I looked on their website, the ingredients ended up being different... We didn't try and of the local crafts and stuck to water but we started with a Caesar and the side of fries. The ketchup is self serve but they give you their special sauce with the fries which was AMAZING. It was extremely flavorful with a hint of spice, super delicious even with the pizza. The Caesar was good and had the perfect amount of sauce on it. However, it is over flavored with lemon and would have preferred the lemon on the side. For the pizza, I ordered the pesto pizza with pepperoni and sun peppers with mushrooms. I'm not sure if the pizza even comes with mushrooms but it said that online. There was also artichoke on the pizza but to be honest, it was one of the best pizzas I've ever had. It was definitely a thinner crust and super greasy but the quality was so good. Loved the casual dining atmosphere! You order at the bar, tell them where you are sitting (first, second, or third floor/rooftop patio) and they bring your food to you. Originally we planned to sit on the rooftop, but there was no shaded areas and it was very sunny so we sat on the couches at the top of the stairs, right before you walk onto the patio. This worked out perfect for my active baby who didn't want to sit still! The falafel burger was tasty, nothing to WOW about but it was good. My husband enjoyed his pizza and said the crust was delish. I had an IPA (can't remember the name) and it was perfect! *Mom tip: elevator only goes to the second floor, so you'll need to carry your stroller up stairs if you plan to sit on the patio. read more

We were excited to review menu and it offered adequate number of choices. Food was good. Ordering was by QR code, not too bad. First issue was tip was requested prior to any interface with a human other than the young man who picked up the plates, oh, did not wipe the table. No setups were provided, but there were extra napkins on the next table. After the order was received, still no utensils or napkins. A bit later drinks were received, and dropped on the table. Conversation, no glasses. We were never approached, no one. Would have liked water, no one to ask. Going back to the tip thing, if this was a normal process, a penny would have been generous. I like this place, but there is one huge downside. Do not order the chicken wings. They are the most overpriced item on the menu, and definitely not worth what they cost. They had a slightly rubbery consistency, some of the wing bones were broken and had bone chunks in the meat, and they were very heavy-handed with the sauce. In addition, we were given a store bought single serving cup of to go ranch with a peel off top like you might see a cheap hotel as a side for dipping. Now, for the good stuff, the beer is fantastic, the Smashburger is better than average. And the pizza is one of the best in town. I will definitely be coming back, but I now know not to waste my money on the chicken wings. read more
