I had high hopes after discussing my hair goals with Tanya -- we went over photo references of the color and tone I wanted to achieve. Unfortunately, the results didn't match what we discussed. The balayage turned out much warmer than the photos, and there were no lighter or blonde pieces like the ones we planned for. Tanya did mention that the toner and blow dry were separate services, but it was still frustrating given that those steps are usually part of achieving the finished look. Even after getting the toner, it wasn't applied evenly, leaving a noticeable patch that didn't take properly. Tanya was kind and communicative during the consultation, but overall I left feeling disappointed with the outcome -- especially given the time and cost. I haven't colored or bleached my hair in over 5 years and was excited to for my full highlight appointment. The stylist recommended a haircut even though it had been about a month since my last cut. she took a total of 5-10 minutes on the cut which was not transformative or anything crazy to merit the $125 charge. She took about 40 minutes to put the foils in.... I typically spend 4+ hours at a salon when I do full highlights. I knew something was off... the lift was pitiful and pretty much the entire bottom half of my hair is untouched. I paid a total of ~$550 when I could have gone to ulta for the same quality of work and fraction of the price. I will not be coming back read more

I am more than happy to be at Blake Charles and Stevie is beyond wonderful. She is highly experienced and understood my needs, concerns, and the nuance of what I described perfectly. I have multiple different color bands in my hair and she was able provide a wonderful color correction with her broad base of experience and knowledge of color, and it really sits beautifully with my skin color now. She also identified the translucence that was happening from previous color applications and that I am gray resistant and I feel held in her knowledge in how to work with this to avoid this as its growing out. There is a certain level of training that she demonstrates that I have not found easily in the last 6 years with newer stylists resulting in issues with coloring my hair. My face looks so much brighter with enhanced features with the new richer brown. I understand now, how important it is to get the right color for the face. Even the care her assistant took to even get the color off of my forehead and precaution was a sigh of relief, as I usually have to ask for another pad to scrub it off myself. Also, having and applying treatments after coloring for cuticle health with fine aging hair is a breath of fresh air, where a lot of places don't apply that knowledge or service. Stevie also recommended blunt cuts and to avoid over texturized cuts for my fragile ends. I walked in with frizzy uneven odd layers that stick out in the wrong places and she saved it all with just the color and Milbon hydrating treatment and I have not even gotten a refined cut yet. I had seen her for a couple of years ago or so, and she had done a wonderful hair cut that I was very happy with, and I did not get a chance to do color with her as I went traveling for a year afterward and then sought someone closer to Marin when I came back and I will never do that again. I am extremely happy with the detailed level of care and service she provided, even when I was late due to downtown SF traffic as its coming alive again with 2 conferences at once. They honored all my services, which did I not expect! The level of professionalism Stevie demonstrates is exceptional. She really takes care of her clients and keeps them coming back. I look forward to evolving my cut as it grows out and color with dimension, and feel extreme relief that I am in super good hands. I had been coming to Joseph Cozza for years before, for my color with Zana, until she left and covid. I've always had separate colorists and stylists. I was going to an old friend that has cut my hair forever and ever and I thought always did an amazing job. I also am always open to helping anyone learn in any way, so have been a model for several education days here at the salon. My hair is complicated to say the least. In my last education day, JAY was the educator and asked if they could cut my hair. I normally don't do the cuts here (since I see my old friend for that). I said yes, and wow! Jay is an expert and told me all about my hair and its tendencies by looking at it wet after color. I was blown away. With that being an education cut guided by Jay, it was a phenomenal HC. Naturally the next time I needed a cut, I saw Jay. Best HC of my life - not kidding. He took his time feeling and learning my hair before cutting it. (Angela (Gela on the website) was my stylist. On Google you can sort by "Lowest Review" and you'll notice most of the 1-star reviews for the entire salon involve Angela.) I went to Blake Charles Salon for blonde highlights. I wanted to avoid clumsy/harmful bleach jobs and (naively) assumed based off BC's 4.9 Google reviews (keep in mind, this salon offers many services besides hair color) that the salon employs competent stylists who can nail the "easy bleach jobs", as well scenarios that require just a little more forethought + professionalism. Basically, anything that you can't do at home. 1/2th of my hair was virgin and 1/2th was dyed black 2 years ago. Angela failed to give me a single thing I asked for, and she compromised the health and integrity of my hair with shocking unprofessionalism. Basic bleach fundamentals she failed to do: - She didn't conduct a strand test to see how long it would take for my hair to lift. - She didn't apply a color remover to my nonvirgin hair before going in with bleach. I was shocked but decided to trust her because I assumed there was some good reason she neglected to do so. While I was being rinsed in the sink, I gently mentioned to her the option of using color remover to address my nonvirgin hair. She said "oh... yeah, maybe we could try that next time. That's a good idea." - She started to bleach/foil the hair around my temples + hairline first. Those hairs are the thinnest on the head and process faster than any other part. This is probably her most negligent choice and led to considerable amount of breakage around my hairline. This breakage could've been avoided under a professional and competent stylist. The universal guidance (that even novices follow) is to bleach the hairline last. - The highlight placement/application was nothing like I'd asked for and not what was indicated in all my reference photos (I had 9 for her.) I wanted chunky dimensional ribbon highlights with a lot of contrast between thicker ribbons of light and dark. She gave me an extremely "melted" ash mouse gradient that looked like I had grey hairs due to the lack of space between the highlights and my natural hair. - She toned my hair 3 times, and each time the resulting color was nothing like what she promised: First time: she toned my hair a mousy cool ash color - honestly one of the strangest colors I've ever seen, which I couldn't even describe. She told me she was aiming for a "warmish blonde." Second time: She again promised to go warmer. The resulting color was pretty much identical to the first color. Third time: she tells me she'll be sending me home with a coppery red. When I get back home and dry my hair, the color is purplish dark burgundy/plum. (Other random surprises: she didn't show me the back of my head - not once - with a mirror. She didn't offer to dry my full head; I was sent home sopping wet with the wind blowing. Both of these things I have always assumed were part of regular service at every salon I've been to.) So now I have broken, damaged, burgundy plum hair. Please, please, if you're going with this salon for highlights, ask for a different stylist if they assign you Angela. She was friendly/considerate enough to waive the entire cost of service halfway into the session when it was clear that it was a failure, but I would rather be a thousand dollars in the red than deal with the years long heartache/road back to health thanks to her. read more
