I was really happy with my looks throughout the event and Kary was attentive throughout, really glad to have hired her. During the makeup trial she listened to my needs and took times to try multiple styles and looks until I'm comfortable with my choices. Her makeup style is very beautiful and natural at the same time, she has a great understand of Asian features. I felt very beautiful. During the event she stayed around for almost the whole ceremony to reception, helping with touch ups and outfit/look changes. She was also great with my mother and bridesmaids, patient and giving styling support when my mom had questions. However I think there's room for improvement in her team. The second HMU she brought with her to help with the other half of my bridesmaids was not as good. My bridesmaid mentioned that her side bun constantly fell out and after asking to be fixed multiple time they just ended up fixing it themselves. The second HMU also didn't seem to have the same joy as Kary and wasn't too friendly. Outside of that, Kary's husband Eugene does all her booking, scheduling and communications. Have some patience for him to get back to you and double check the booking times as I experienced some mixed up during the trial booking. Overall I would definitely recommend working with Kary for your makeup, you will not regret it, she really took good care of me.

Getting into contact with Eugene was easy, and they were fully transparent about prices and packages from the get go, which I was grateful for. We had a very large group (10 ladies) getting ready the morning of, and she and her assistant did absolutely wonderful for everyone's hair and makeup!! Some of my girls hardly wear any makeup, so they had no reference to work with, but Kary and her assistant made everyone feel comfortable and beautiful. I'm so grateful that she was so attentive, making sure that nothing feels uncomfortable on our hair or on our faces, and I'm especially grateful that her package included touch ups at the venue itself. I feel like most other makeup artists will do your hair and makeup the morning of, and you just hope that it'll last the whole day. I even asked to do a hair change for my tea ceremony, and Kary did it without hesitation and killed it. My mom especially loved the updo! She even included hair pieces that went beautifully with the vibe of the dress/venue, and I cannot recommend her enough.

Blowology Dry Bar & Spa

I really wanted to love this place, but for the price... it was mid at best…read more I came in for an extra-long blowout with extensions $135 + tax (which already felt questionable since personal services like hair in CA are generally non-taxable... Google is free). Add $12 parking at Union Square garage, so close to $170 deep for a blowout. For that price, I expected polished. What I got felt rushed. I paid extra for extensions but was paired with someone who clearly didn't have much extension experience. The wash was super quick (definitely no massage), and when she brushed my hair she was rough, like yanking-my-head-around rough. At one point she even asked, "Does that hurt?" which is never a comforting question mid-service. By the end, one of my front extension beads had been pulled out, leaving a noticeable bump at the front of my hair for weeks. When she finished the blowout, we both kind of looked at it like... ummmmm. It just didn't look good. She asked if I wanted her to touch up the front, so she grabbed a curler for my bangs, and literally picked old hairs out of it before wrapping my hair. I wish I was kidding. It felt very last-minute. She adjusted a few pieces I pointed out, and I left saying, "Maybe it'll fall and look better later?" She said, "Yeah..." It completely fell the next day. I ended up touching it up myself. Before leaving that first appointment, I asked if I could come back for the complimentary touch-up and upgrade to a half-up style by just paying the $30 difference. I was told yes, of course. Three days later I came back downtown for my touch-up. New stylist. I asked about upgrading to the half-up and paying the $30 difference like I was told. She checked and came back saying no - I'd have to pay the full $165. I said I didn't have time for a full wash and everything, and she said, "Oh you don't have to wash, we can just do the style." But for the full $165 For just styling. Wild. So I just did the complimentary touch-up. Ironically, she used a straightener for the curls and it looked way better and lasted way longer which only reminded me how poorly the first blowout was done. Overall, the vibe felt slightly annoyed and not very welcoming. For this price point, I expect consistency, extension experience, and a polished result. Instead I left feeling overcharged and underwhelmed.

Thankfully, Blowology Dry Bar and Spa came through! I needed a slicked-back bun for an event, and my stylist, Ali, was awesome. He told me it was his first time doing that kind of updo, but honestly, you wouldn't have known. He took his time, made sure it wasn't too tight (huge win for my scalp), and the end result looked great. He even gave me a discount since it was his first time doing a bun for a customer. which I thought was super thoughtful. I also thought the ambiance of the salon was super cozy and brought all the vintage vibes!

We met over zoom for our hair and makeup lessons and I was able to record myself going through the steps. Shana gave me so much amazing advice from managing my hair in the heat, to applying eyelashes, and which parts of the eye shadow palette to use for various looks. Being able to have the video with me while I was getting ready at dawn with every step made everything feel seamless instead of stressful. I've never felt more confident doing my makeup. Waking up at 4:45am and being ready to go at 6am felt crazy, and I was so happy I knew exactly what I was doing and what to pack for touch ups. It was so wonderful knowing I had everything I needed.

However, my last visit left me a little disappointed because while it was extremely relaxing and the service was great, I'm not so happy with how my actual nails turned out :-( I did the Volcano Spa service for both my pedicure and manicure which were absolutely lovely, along with gel remove and gel on both my fingers and toes. The 10 minutes of massage for both were so nice, especially the shoulders and upper back that came with the manicure. But during the gel remove, the gel on my fingers was removed with the drill. It was the same on my toes but I don't have an issue there. Normally I wouldn't mind, but my natural fingernails were drilled down so thin that even though I cut my nails short, they're ripping at the ends with normal daily wear and tear. I went on Saturday morning and I've had two nails rip at the ends already and it is only Tuesday morning. I'm not sure if it was because I came in with long nails already (imagine asking for a medium-long set) and they may have been mistaken for gel-x or something of the sort, but it was just my natural nails with gel on top. I can even feel on all of my fingernails just how thin they were drilled down because suddenly all my nails are very flimsy, even with several gel coats on top. The rest of the service and experience were great, so it's a bit disappointing to feel like I regret how much I paid because of how weak my fingernails became after this appointment. Regardless I would still return in the future if I want the pampering experience, but if I can do without the massage and just need my nails done I may choose another salon instead. Just something to note if you're someone who is worried about your nail strength. UPDATE 8/4 9:48PM: Another nail ripped pretty far down just from scratching my head :-(

A very tasteful, custom design for an 11 y.o. They lasted almost 4 weeks but finally time to take them off. We made an appt for 2:30 today and due to Jenny not getting the message we had to wait about 30-40 minutes. Not the biggest deal, really nice out and our favorite boba spot just a few blocks down Polk St. When we got back the other woman in the shop started taking off the gels, they were taking a while to saturate enough to fully remove so the cotton with acetone and foil had to stay on longer. My daughter's fingers started burning and when we let them know, Jenny prompted the other woman to take a look. Not ready yet so while the owner was finishing up with another client this other woman needed to take care of it. At one point a customer had to ask this other woman to help my daughter, that she would kindly wait. It took over an hour to remove and clean up her nails, no manicure after. Two hours later my daughter's poor fingers are still burning. Jenny was quite apologetic and adjusted the price as a courtesy. We love Jenny but maybe she needs some more support in her shop.

I had gotten so desperate to find a beauty salon that does African American hair in San Francisco. Almost everyday I would ask women with cute cuts what salon they used for their hair cut and style. The answer was always the same 80% Oakland,10% a friends house and 10% they did their own hair. Last week I had just left a business appointment downtown in San Francisco and a very nice soft spoken African American woman name Del marketing her salon skills handed me a 15% first time off card for a treatment. I asked a few questions and she was right on with the answers. Before we parted ways I told her I would call by the middle of the week with a decision but I knew I had made it already. I called the salon Lisa answered the phone with a very friendly hello, I asked for Del's earliest open appointment for that Friday. I arrived about 5 minutes before my time and was greeted by both Del and Lisa. The Acheme Salon is a very NY/European hip open space feel. Del is professional detailed, quick, and very kind. I left the salon with a very hip cut that made me feel and look at these 20 years younger and at my age that's what I call happiness. I'm the first to admit that I am horrible when it comes to my hair. I have naturally poofy, curly, long hair that gets very little attention paid to it and boy does it need it. Yes, it has a life of its own. With all the hair drama aside, I found Selida as a solution during my hair coloring days. I actually followed her from a couple of other hair studios because she's really that awesome. Not to mention, she would knock out all sorts of color on my hair like no tomorrow without a single break in sweat. Selida is hilarious and always had me cracking up in the chair with updates on Flavor Flav or I love NY. Ah, the guilty pleasures in life! She's great at putting her client's wishes on the forefront and communicating realistic results. She pays attention to detail and I never wound up with the dreaded "brassy orange hair" color. I don't color my hair anymore, however. Way too much maintenance for my own good. Okay, maybe it's pure laziness. I miss Selida though! The fact that Selida never tries to push product is also a definite bonus. As for the actual salon, it's very modern and artsy. read more

I got my hair styled by Lauren on the day I was hosting a big event. I was hesitant to pay to get my hair styled because the last time I got it styled at the Dry bar was a horrible experience-they were really unprofessional, used cheap products and my curls fell out within an hour after getting it done. My experience with Lauren was completely different in every way. She is extremely professional and skilled, I explained the kind of look I wanted and she made it look amazing-even though I have a grown-out bad cut from a different salon! The best part-She let me keep the curler clips in all day so I could take them out right before my event started and wha la-perfect curls that stayed all night long! I love my hair stylist at Alcheme Salon "Helen Chung" she has been cutting my hair for over 15 years and I fly all the way from Los Angeles to San Francisco just to see her. She has an amazing touch from the Shampoo bowl to the scissors that transform my look every time I see her. I've asked her to cut my hair in many different and extreme styles and she delivers every single time, hasn't missed a beat. She is up to speed on fashion and gives me a look that is always "Today". I found Alcheme salon last minute in union square and they were able to accommodate me and give me the best blow out ever. My hair is frizzy and the stylist even used hot tools to smooth out all my hair without extra charge. They use Milbon products which is perfect to condition my hair. It's Japanese product which is perfect for Asian hair. The staff makes me feel welcomed right away with a cup of coffee and helped me picked out the best product to take home after the blow out. They have Milbon, Rene Furterer and Kerastase. I left feeling like a brand new girl and they even escorted me down to my parking garage. A+ for me. Rudy Sandoval is my hair artist at Alcheme Salon. My best friend referred me to Rudy. Her hair always looks great and the color so natural. I was having a hard time finding a colorist that could give me the color I desired. On my first appointment with Rudy he knew just what I wanted and proceeded to create a beautiful, natural color for me. He is also excellant at cutting and stying my hair. Thin, fine hair can be a challenge. Rudy's cut helps me to accomplish a look of volume that other stylist could not attain. I often get compliments on my hair since Rudy has become my hair artist. This a very warm and welcoming salon. Shelly's friendly personality sets the tone and is felt throughout the business. You will always be greeted with a smile. Douglas is a professional and an awesome stylist. He asks questions and collaborates with me in order to offer suggestions that best suit my personality and lifestyle. I love my new doo from LeAnne Cowan at Alcheme - it is a great space and everyone was friendly and helpful. I am a tough customer as I know what I like - but don't always know how to explain what I want - and I like a stylist with creativity! LeAnne was great - we talked through some ideas (some mine some hers) and we came up with a great cut and color. And in my first 8, I probably went through over a dozen stylists - just never finding the right one, someone who offers the combination of contemporary style 'and' phenomenal precision to their craft. but i found Lana 3 yrs ago and haven't gone anywhere since. Can't say enough about this salon. I've been going here since it opened and have been going to Angela for over 12 years. If it isn't the great work that you see on so many heads around San Francisco, you'll see it in the hair/fashion shows the salon regularly puts on (last one was at Ruby Sky) or on the several TV shows that have featured them...one being on a nationally broadcasted show on NBC two weeks ago. Fantastic,vibrant energetic hair salon. I had my hair tinted and blown out by Hannah G. She listened to what my vision was and chose the most beautiful warm auburn brown tint. The quality of the products are the best I've ever had. At the washbowl she gave me a very warm massage on my head and neck. And then to top it off Hannah gave me the best hair blowout I have ever had. People were stopping me on the streets. Jean Pierre Serrau has been making my hairlook amazing for 16 years. I followed him from Saks, Premier Atelier and now Alcheme. He is THE BEST. I first went to him for my wedding when my regular stylist at Saks wasn't available, and never went back to anyone else. He makes my mousy, curly brown hair look smooth and shiny..I feel old and ugly when I walk in young(er) and chic when I walk out. Gib totally rocks! I started going to Gib to fix a bad haircut in 2001 when I lived in SF. He not only fixed it, he guided me through a boy-short, Cesar-like haircut to the long locks I have now. He was the only stylist I would trust to do this, and I went to him regularly until September 2006, when I left SF. I now live in NYC, but I made sure to visit Gib on a recent visit back to the West Coast. I found a good stylist here in NYC, but no one knows or cuts my hair like Gib. Janina is wonderful! She completely transformed my hair. I walked in with long, curly brown hair that I hadn't had cut for nearly 5 years, with four small dreadlocks interspersed. She gave me gorgeous long layers and beautifully colored the tips with a red-to-orange fade. All while working around my dreadlocks! I imagine that many women think nothing of spending 50 bucks or more on a haircut, but not most men I know. Me, I'm an $18 haircut guy, or less if I can get away with it. That was until I met Selida Cazares at Alcheme. If you're going to spend money on a haircut, it better be for a good reason -- wedding, job interview -- or the stylist better be kick ass. Sam is a true alchemist! He transformed my hair from a disaster (home bleach and dye attempt) to a dream, taking a dark reddish pink with uneven colouring to a gorgeous rose gold blending into 'natural' brown roots. I had an appointment with Brandon and 4pm. I walked in at 4 and he was still working on the person before me. I was okay with that because he was taking his time to make sure the customer was satisfied and he only took an extra 7-10 minutes. I've been getting my hair done at a $15 place and thought that I needed to get it nicely done this time around especially since I haven't gotten my hair cut in 7ish months. First off, he took time and washed my hair was superior products than what I use. Although, I think everything has to be better than a giant tub of Costco brand shampoo and conditioner. I got side swept bangs and a little bit of layering in the front. He also did a dry cut after to make sure everything was beautiful. He also gave me great tips on how to keep my hair pretty and natural. The cut is expensive for me but it was completely worth it. He took his time and I came out with a professional looking cut. Long cuts are $80. Because I was a first time customer, Brandon's partner and business associate gave me a 20% discount. I saw 3 returning customers there during my cut. It was pretty amazing considering there were only 2 chairs and I was there for 1 1/2 hours. I will be returning.

I've had curly hair all my life so I wasn't sure how well this would work for me, plus I have damaged hair at the ends from heat and grown out highlights. But Ada was so sweet, attentive, had great communication, and was so so knowledgeable so I felt I was in good hands. I left the salon with my hair feeling softer, shinier, and more healthy than it has ever been before. I waited 48hrs, washed my hair, and air dried it, and I am so happy with the results. It feels like it undid years of damage and my hair is smooth. It got rid of approximately 80% of my curls air dried, and I'm sure if I blow dried it straight, it would look like I just left the salon. I am definitely recommending this to all my friends and would highly recommend booking with Ada. Also, the salon is so pretty and in such a nice area. I went for a walk before and got myself an iced coffee. Overall, great experience!
