Blaze Pizza left me wanting more--- MUCH more This is a review of the 511 S State St location. Seriously, guys, almost TEN dollars for a super-lightweight shell with NO visible cheese after "blazing" (I did see them sprinkle on some cheese, albeit very sparingly but there wasn't any that we could see or smell or taste on the finished product), a scant smattering of what tasted like very cheap pork cheap pork sausage (and they called this, I believe, the "meat lovers" pizza-- what a crock)-- actually, all we could taste was sauce, and some onion-- I think that was about all unless I am missing something-- oh yeah, the oregano which didn't add any weight or bulk to it??!!-- Come on. If it were $5 or $6 each, I MIGHT be back if I were super-hungry and I had no other options.... but this is a HORRIBLE attempt at "pizza". This is NOT a pizza. Not even close. Not when you can walk a relatively short distance to one of the REAL Italian pizza places around and get SO much more "bang for your buck". Like Pat's on Clark, for example, or Exchequer on Wabash where, for around $24 you will get a SUBSTANTIAL, lip-smacking delicious REAL pizza SERIOUSLY loaded with meat, cheese or whatever you want and STILL have leftovers and smiles the next day to feed your inner hungry. But, as I walked out of Blaze yesterday with my takeout order of two "meat lovers" pizzas, I immediately noted the LIGHTNESS of the two boxes which caused me concern because we were hungry. I mean, these boxes weighed essentially nothing. And, when I got them home (we live right nearby so I had high, high hopes that we had found a new "go-to" pizza place, as I had heard good things and read some good reviews but I can only conclude that those people know NOTHING about what "real" pizza is), it took us all but a scant few minutes to suck down these wimpy things and I was worried that my beautiful wife was still hungry-- she dieted all week in anticipation of our inaugural (and, as it turns out, our last) trip to Blaze-- while we are used to GOOD pizza that would fill us up. Here's another telltale item: in our building, we are supposed to take used pizza boxes downstairs rather than put them down the trash chute lest then clog it. Well, there two wimpy boxes were so small that I simply threw them out with the rest of the trash. The both fit neatly into one small plastic garbage bag. Shame on you, Blaze. You left us wanting. And resentful. And feeling shafted. My prediction is that no way this joint will have lasting power and will likely be out of business before too long because, quite simply, they fail to deliver. Met a friend for lunch before noon on a weekday...I had heard good things about Blaze, but I'm not sure what all this hype has been about. It's decent, but you can get better pizza for the same price elsewhere. I guess if you have a hankering, and Blaze is the closest thing, it's fine. What I didn't like about this place is the staff SCREAMS at you while you're in line and ordering, and it is impossible to have a conversation in this place. I was looking forward to catching up with my friend, but this was probably the wrong place to choose. If you're looking for lunch during the week, take it back to your office. read more

I love this place. Went their today for lunch, and created my own pizza with as many toppings as I wanted for $7.95. I created it with their spicy sauce, which to me is the key ingredient that distinguishes this pizza from anywhere else. I can't eat, dairy, so I didn't add any cheese which made this the best darn pizza I've ever eatn without cheese on it. I added pepperoni, bacon, spinach, onions, green and red peppers, black olives, garlic, tomatoes, zucchini and oregano. It's cooked to perfection to still be a thin crust pizza that's still crispy and flavorful in each bite. Took max of 8 min from time I arrived and picked my ingredients to the time my pizza was ready. Will definitely be back and glad they are open not only during the week but on Saturday as well. read more

I really enjoyed this place! It was one of the few restaurants in the west loop that was open on Labor Day, and that was pretty much the only reason we went there. My boyfriend and I went inside and were greeted by the staff. One of the women asked if we had ever eaten at Blaze Pizza before and we said no. She then explained how the menu worked (build your own pizza or pick from their specialty pizzas). We decided to share two of the specialty pizzas, the BBQ chicken pizza and the White Top pizza. The employees told us that each pizza takes about 3 minutes to make, and we were not expecting it to be so quickly! The two pizzas tasted really good and we paid around $18 for two of them. We were both full after finishing the pizzas. Overall, Blaze is fairly cheap and I would consider it fast-food. Everyone who worked there was really friendly and seemed happy to be there. Fast Casual done right! When you arrive at lunch and see a line out the door you can take it two ways: 1. be annoyed that you have to wait so long on your lunch hour 2. Or be excited about what you're going to eat because so many people can't be wrong. Well I definitely was #2. Much to my surprise the line moved so fast that I still hadn't decided what I wanted before I got to the order taker. I panicked a bit, lol, and let my co-worker cut. I decided on the Link In: Italian sausage, roasted red peppers, sautéed onions, mozzarella, red sauce, and I added hot peppers. Let me just say that this place was packed and they moved every one through so fast! Even though they were clearly busy, my questions were met with smiling faces and patience. All kind of orders were being fired out in the kitchen which is right there...you can see everything....the people in the kitchen were on their A game and their movements looked choreographed; how else could they move at that pace and someone not get burned!?! They still had friendly banter, maintaining interaction with the customers with ease throughout. This place gets A+ for customer service. My co-workers are very picky. We all loved the pizza; we finished eating and there was absolutely no complaints. The food was tasty and my pizza crust was perfect! Crispy where it needed to be and soft and chewy where I wanted it. The ingredients went well together and the flavor was balanced. Five stars because I've been here twice and the employees are friendly. If they see you coming from the door they will greet you right away. It is REALLY packed during the lunch hours on weekdays but that makes sense since its close proximity to the business district. The pizza is prepared "chipotle" style and you get to pick all the toppings from the sauce to the spices. So far two pizzas down and they were both good! I would recommend eating the whole thing since it does not taste as great when it's cold - possibly because the ingredients were fresh to begin with and now they are not. read more

Thank you for the free pizza coupon! I rarely pass up free anything. So I came in and ordered a signature pizza, "Green Stripe," and added ricotta cheese. The ladies building my pizza were efficient and friendly. Paid nothing and took a seat. A few minutes later, my badly mispronounced name was called out and I grabbed my hot n ready pie. It was large for one, but thin, so I figured I could down it. And I did. It was really, really good. With mozzarella and roasted red peppers and grilled chicken and garlic and ricotta and fresh arugula (added after the pizza was baked) and pesto drizzle (also added after the pizza was baked), I loved everything on there and was excited to come back here for more. The crust was crisp and a little singed in places, which I like. A nice touch is that even when you eat in, they have 'to go' boxes over by the parmesan and pepper flakes to take the rest home. But I doubt they ever use any of them because as big as a pizza is for one, it's so good, you can't stop eating it until it is gone! read more

Build you own pizza, what's not to love? They have gluten free crust (make sure they cook it long enough because the crust takes longer to cook than the regular one) and vegan cheese. They also have a variety of toppings including artichokes, goat cheese, pineapple, mushrooms, zucchini, many types of meat.. I could go on. They have a nice seating area and also have wine and beer options. I've seen private events hosted there before too (though they were kindly still making take out orders for the 'regular' people). They close earlier than I would expect (that's the Loop for you), so be sure to check their hours. I believe they currently close at 7 on weekends and 8 on weekdays. read more

I am visiting Chicago for an all-week work meeting and we rented Blaze's out for a few hours. The staff and manager (Shantrese) were so accommodating and attentive to our group. The staff members helped us make our own pizzas behind the counter and came around often to make sure that every table was doing OK. It was a really cool experience. So I went to the new Chipotle-style pizza place next to the Chipotle-style barbecue place, across the street from the Chipotle. I was nervous as fuck because I knew they were going to try and make the experience like AN EXPERIENCE and over complicate things and ask me all kinds of pizza questions. You know, like when you go to DSW and they yell "HI SHOE LOVER" at you when they come in the door because they want you to smile like an imbecile at their LOOK HOW NICE WE ARE HERE, ISN'T THIS A NICE PLACE inanity. But I just wanted a simple pizza. I didn't want to build my own. I wanted something directly off the menu. It was loud and hot in there and I just wanted to leave (with a pizza). So the lady at the beginning of the Pizza Maker line asks the guy half a foot in front of me "Have you been here before?!" and he says no so she launches into this high-speed overview of how to select ingredients off a list that you would like them to put on a circle of dough for you. Her lips were moving so fast I thought I was going to pass out, she was like the Micro Machines man of pizza mechanics. So she explains the intricacies of a Basic Restaurant Menu With Under 15 Items On It and ol' boy picks something and moves on. Bravo, Sir! She then turns to me and offers me the exact same motormouth "Hihowareyouhaveyoubeenherebefore" to which I say, "Uhhhh YES?" (lie) hoping she will just leave me alone, also because I was less than a foot away while she explained the whole thing to the other guy, so I felt like maybe I should get a pass. So she says "YAY WELCOME BACK" and decides explain the entire premise of the restaurant to me anyway. "So you already know that--" and then there it is again, the Guide to Getting Pizza Here. In my opinion, it should not be any more difficult than this: 1. I say the words meaning the kind of pizza I want, 2. You go get that pizza or tell someone who can get that pizza, 3. You take my money, then 4. I leave with pizza. But no. They just had to dook it up unnecessarily. So after she's done acknowledging what I already know and then repeating it to me, she allows me to order just a basic old no-frills pizza straight off the menu, and I move on down the line. The thing is? I'm cursed when it comes to ordering things. No matter what it is, if it's something I really want, they will either be out of it or just screw up my order so that what I want isn't what I want anymore. It's a CURSE. It happens to me ALL the TIME. Ask anyone. So I'm standing there trying not to be excited about the ricotta cheese that, according to the menu, they're going to add to my pizza. I'm repeating "don't think about the ricotta, don't think about the ricotta" over and over in my head, but all I can see flashing behind my eyes are giant dollops of ricotta sizzling and bubbling on my pizza's crust. Oh, heaven! What joy! RICOTTA! So, of course, my pizza slides right past the cheese station with nothing but mozzarella on it. My hands are all sweaty as I follow it down the line and realize that at the part where the salt and pepper are offered as toppings for your toppings is the END. No ricotta for you, jerkface. So I verrry delicately say, "Uhhm. Is...is that supposed to have...ricotta cheese?" The lady who was juuust about to toss my pizza in the Ready to Bake queue looks down at my neglected pizza and says, "Oh, yeah, I guess it is." So they add the ricotta. PHEW. This ricotta disaster has been averted. FOR NOW...dun dun DUNNNN So they pop my pizza into the flame den at the back and ring me up, and tell me to stand over to the side until my name is called. The pizza comes out fast at that joint because they have this whole "Fast fired! Cooked in 180 minutes!" thing they're always on about, it's on every sign and menu and they even tell you that at the beginning of the line, whether you want them to or not. So when I lifted a slice out of the box by the crust and tried to take a bite, it did what things do when you hurry and just went straight limp dick, sagging down onto my wrist, its toppings flopping out onto the bottom of the box. All of my beautiful ricotta just splattered all over the place. Our hero defeated, ricotta disaster accepted. Wahh wahhhhhhh. I think they use good ingredients, at least, what was splattered all over the bottom of the cardboard box as I ate the naked, floppy, marinara-flavored crust flaps looked to be quality stuff. Maybe I'll go back someday and be that crankety old lady type that says "Couldya cook mine longer, please? I don't mean to be a burden!" Also maybe by then the novelty of forced friendliness will have worn off and I can just order pizza like a normal person, from a normal person. read more

Because they're making the pizza right before your eyes, you can really tell them exactly what you want at every stage. I generally buy pizza from the blaze pizza located at 24 S Clinton Street, Chicago(the one near Presidential Towers). Today I came across the most disrespectful employee who basically had a problem adding topping to the pizza, like I am ordering the pizza for free. Was extremely rude and behaved extremely unprofessional that I had to leave the place. If she does not want to work then she should not be standing and taking orders. I went in on opening night and was extremely impressed with how efficient the entire staff at this Blaze location was in spite of the long line. I ordered the BBQ Chicken pizza which was actually recommended to me by a very courteous, smiling young lady. Everyone behind the counter was super professional and I had my pizza in my hand within 5 minutes. The pizza itself was delicious. I didn't think I'd ever eat a pizza without a sauce base since they actually drizzle the BBQ sauce on top of the cheese (Other pizzas do have a red sauce base!). The pizza was cooked perfectly. It was nice and crispy, and the cheese had melted wonderfully. The banana peppers went really well with the sauce and chicken, which was also grilled to perfection. I am a deep dish person myself but I have to give it to what they are making at Blaze. I have been told to try their Red Vine pizza the next time I go so I am looking forward to my next trip here. Fast, friendly, made-to-order pizza with a wealth of toppings at a reasonable price. We're glad to have another business in this area open on weekends, just wish they'd stay open later.
