WATCH YOUR ACTUAL BILL! Ordered wine and when my husband commented on the 16.00 glass I asked to check the menu because I ordered a 12.00 Rioja. The server argued with me and told me I was wrong. Insisted on seeing the menu and guess what? My wine was 12.00! He then said it was only 4.00 difference and that the check would remain the same and he would give us back 4.00. We asked for the bill to be changed. I think they rely on hotel guests not checking. I'm not cheap, had a 400.00 steak bill for 2 a few doors down. I hate to be redundant but the wonderful, warm greeting that my two friends and I received from the charming bartender and then by Ali, our attentive and accommodating waiter yesterday was all we needed to remain there and enjoy. I had made reservations at another restaurant up the road, but as I miscalculated the running time of our play, they weren't meant to open for another half hour. Disappointed, we were lured into the calm, upscale setting of the Blue Bar (I understand that it was recently renovated...money well spent, I say) and our disappointment was transformed into one of the best experiences ever. For those of you that find $200 too much, then please do walk on by because you do not deserve the fine quality that Blue Bar is more than willing to bestow on its patrons. I applaud any bar that serves Hendricks gin and also carries fresh jalapeño slices.....if you are into spice, this will be your new tipple. Just make sure it's served up and properly iced. The Blue Bar is a cosmic drinking experience. It brings you back to the days of Don Draper and Mad Men. Bartenders mix the drinks with expertise. It's a blue motif bar athmosphere connected to the Algonquin Hotel. Prices are very 2018. Two cocktails, plus tip ran $45. But, we new what we were getting into having visited before. I happened to stumble into this place by accident with some friends during my last visit to NYC. The bar itself had a nice and grown-up laid back feel to it. Being from LA, I don't think we have anything like this here and it definitely made me feel like I was in NYC. The friendly bartender invited us in and suggested the Old Fashioned and at $20 per drink, it's not what I consider cheap... but then again aren't most things in NYC expensive? Looking back, I believe that drink was worth the price since you can tell that only quality ingeredients were used and one drink was nearly enough to knock me out. My husband & I had great experiences with Cristian while staying at the the Algonquin for a few nights. The drinks are large, have great ingredients and yes expensive (luckily we had read about prices before ordering the non-menu drinks) :) Cristian made us feel very welcomed & offered us a dinner location suggestion that was great! He brings bar snacks & water right away, he knows what people want :) Had us trying new drinks too which was so much fun. Well, for their price, should be good, and in fact it was really a good bar. The bartender there was really attentive and arranged a cocktail for me (sorry forgot what exactly was in...), and was SOO GOOD. They also have nice glass wines. The atmosphere is sedate and relatively quiet, maybe the average age of the guests there is also relatively high, and it makes this bar nice and comfortable. Some of my favorite bars in the city are in hotels. The Blue Bar has a classy throwback kind of feeling, but not so stuffy that you feel out of place, and not so big that you feel lost inside. It's a great midtown place to hide from the post-work crowd. Also, the bartender is extremely helpful and friendly. Best sidecar I'd ever had! read more

I'm putting the review here only because I don't want to put a bar review in the middle of the actual hotel reviews and the last thing I want to do is confuse people. But for my two cents, I would much rather drink in the hotel's lobby than I would in the actual bar. The bar was a little boring, but the lobby is right out of NYC nostalgia. The crowd was a mix between in-the-know tourists (all AMAZINGLY good-looking), well dressed mid-town business people, and crazy NYC characters. Seriously, there was a woman there who was in her mid-70s if she was a day, and was decked out like she was a Chanel mannequin - quilted black and white jacket, several long ropes of pearls, and white chalk make up. I couldn't tell if her look was ironic or dead serious. The only thing that I'm sure of is that she moved to NYC to hang out with the beatniks, then ended up sleeping with with Warhol. As for the actual beverages, I started with a martini - made very dirty, just how I like it - and then moved on to a delicious glass of Pinot Noir. Our foursome stopped in after a Broadway play, and stayed for more than two hours, thoroughly enjoying the classic, upscale but easy environment. Our tab for eight drinks, a cheese plate and generous tip was $200. We all agreed the drinks were pricey but that the portions were well above average. And the service was excellent. But hey, it's the Algonquin and to us, that in itself warranted a more expensive night than is normal for us. To be honest I never intended on coming here but I was going out with someone and the Lantern's Keep was closed for a private party. As made clear by the name "Blue Bar", the bar is illuminated by very bright blue lights. They were so bright and neon that I felt like I was transported back in time and was sitting in the middle of a Bar-Mitzvah dance floor. The server was inattentive, cleared two unfinished drinks without asking and through no fault of the staff but instead by the design of the bar, my chair was hit numerous times. To top it all off this experience and 4 drinks came to about $75 (before tip). It might sound harsh but my profile will show you that bad reviews written by me are few and far between. I would suggest skipping this place and going to the Lantern's Keep next door. read more

I'm a fan of the Algonquin cocktail and make them at home all the time. Not many bars know of them or how to make them, so we visited Manhattan, I had to stop in and have a drink or two at the spot where they originated. All in all I really liked the atmosphere and the drink was excellent as was to be expected. I would stop in again if I were right near by and dressed for the occasion, but I don't think I would go out of my way again as I did the first time. read more

We stopped in here on a whim & what a great find!! Very old school New York. From the music to the decor & the bartenders. We felt like we stepped back in time. The crab cakes were very good& the hubby loved his Manhattan Rye cocktail. We will definitely stop back in on our next trip. read more

I was here on a Saturday night with my girlfriend; enjoying a much needed break in work. The ambiance in this bar is great. The blue lighting is great in this bar. It is a fun place to be in. Rodney was the bartender and he is one of the best bartenders I've had in a hotel bar. He made me an excellent old-fashioned and my girlfriend's cosmo was so good that she has said she won't go to any other bar for one. We ordered a variety of different foods to snack on. The ordered the chicken caesar salad, lobster rolls, and fries. The caesar salad dressing was delicious and the chicken was cooked really well. The lobster roll was pretty good but there was too much bread considering the amount of lobster (it would have been better with either smaller rolls or more lobster). The fries were perfectly seasoned and not greasy. The bar gives you spicy/sweet popcorn. This popcorn is very addictive and we could have eaten it all night. I ordered a black and moon to finish the night (blue moon on the bottom, guinness on top). Most bartenders can't do this correctly because they don't tier the beers, just drop the guiness into the blue moon. However, Rodney did a great job and the beer was layered and my drink was great. We will definitely be returning to the Blue Bar. It's a great place to talk, people watch, and enjoy some food and drink. read more

Well, I will confirm after being in that place for just one minute. When I looked at my friend's face, and glanced at my own reflection in the mirror, I was horrified! We had to run... My anatomy has taken too far a tour of duty too be easily swayed by the fancy cocktail at the expensive hotel bar. Just make my drink strong and make it well. I ordered a Manhattan at the Algonquin Hotel. Mistake #1: You tried to upsell me to a rye whiskey at $25. For a Manhattan at $19, it better be made with rye whiskey. Mistake #2: You tried to upsell me to another terrible drink. Certainly I appreciate the effort and courtesy, but a bourbon and blood orange juice is not going to cut it as an "off-the-menu" drink. Mistake #3: Under gin drinks, you don't list a martini. Um, uh, that's how you make a martini. The thing that I hate most about NYC are bars and restaurants that clearly make money off their vaunted and storied reputation. I'm sure the Blue Bar was quite the place back in the Don Draper days, but unfortunately, it's sort of a tourist trap now. Nothing beats a great bar in the lobby of your hotel, the best part being that I had the Tastiest cocktail of my whole NY Trip here. It is the 10 Thyme Smash, (what a name!) and it's pretty much a Gimlet with Thyme. I adored it! My boyfriend had some raspberry chili cosmo type drink which was lovely too. Just shady enough for a midtown bar. Crowd is a good mix of creepy finance dudes with their mistresses, your oddball European tourists, and a smattering of everything else. My new favorite bar in Times Square. I've dined at the round table which I think is same hotel but never at Blue Bar until this weekend. Coolest bar in Times Square so unique. They serve the martini in a silver cup with no stem and it was the coolest looking glass I've ever seen. The popcorn was quite tasty. All the beers were from Brooklyn dug on that. Was a little slow there but don't care. I'll be back. Only gripe was I wished they had more of the usual vodkas I like. read more

i love cool vintage ambiance, and free table snacks, but at least $20, up to $27 for a standard cocktail????! not cool at all. it's not like it was a crazy high end fabulous cocktail that gives you an orgasm at the end. standard bar snacks were also around $20-$25. i decided to eat dinner somewhere else. obviously the algonquin is awesome and old timey (even though it is now a marriott), but the blue bar wasn't SO cool that it can charge those prices for an okay cocktail. fun to go to but, meh! read more

where do you go when you are on a first date and while you are walking to the royalton for chocolate martinis she mentions that she's married and has 2 kids and did she forget to tell you that before? right across the street to the algonquin's blue bar! yup, it's perfect for just that situation. have a blood and sand, it has johnnie red and a bunch of other stuff in it. it tastes just fine. it also costs $15 and goes down in about 2 swallows. but you got to give credit where credit is due: you can sit with an emply glass for two hours and no one will pressure you to move on, even when the place fills up. read more

Very upset. Ive been bar hopping through Midtown for years BUT I've never felt so ripped off. I went with a friend and4 drinks later im at 120 bucks! Now in reality captain morgan is 18.99. Why is a drink 30 bucks? I quickly paid n proceeded to leave BUT was immediately approached for a TIP! You have to be kidding me.
