I went in at 9 minutes before 8pm and was rather blatantly encouraged to leave by the lady working because she said they were closing in 5 minutes. I just wanted a quick takeout order and didn't realize they closed at 7:56pm. I thought it was 8:00pm but must have been mistaken. 3 stars because the outside area is comfortable, well-spaced, clean and has a lot of shaded seating. The beer selection is good too. Just make sure you get there well before closing or you might be encouraged to leave like I was. read more

Food and service is great. Very quick with orders and I have had many delicious sandwiches. Back patio is fantastic set up with a great deal of space and designed well. One suggestion would be to add more umbrellas or sun shades to the back as it does get a lot of direct sun light read more

I was very surprised to know that they don't have any hot drinks. I asked for coffee. Nope. Then I asked for tea. Nope. The guy said, oh there's a coffee shops right around the corner. You can bring it here. I looked out the door and there was a line all the way out the door of that place. Why should I have to stand in a long line at a coffee shop just to have a hot drink? It's open! And busy! Literally only two sears at the bar and two more (though not together) at the community table! The food is sumptuous as excepted! It's a little loud with all the guests chewing and/or chatting; thankful no one was shouting. They've two registers, two expediter staff looking for your number and bringing you tour food. Props for two choices in the ladies washroom, old school paper towels or green air dryer. I'm sure they will get the handicap stall fixed soon. For those needing ADA access, check out the parking in the back. For the foreseeable future, we are all going to be looking for parking! Not sure how many stars to give a place where I wasn't able to try the food. Last night (Saturday) my family and I decided that big salads sounded like a good idea for dinner so we headed to Blue Barn. I had checked their hours and they were open until 8pm. When we walked in and up to the counter at 7pm we were told they were no longer taking orders unless they were online orders. There were three people behind the counter. I told them I had checked the website which stated they were open until 8 and she said that things were so slow they decided to close early. Lame. read more

I love this place. I am going to start with the slight negative and that is not only here but most places. The prices are high. A salad for 17.00 is sometimes the norm these days but crazy. Now the positive. Their food is delicious. I have had their Thai salad (BOMB and huge), their sandwiches (delicious) and their tarot tots ( best I have ever had. I want this place to succeed. That's how I want to start this post. I've been to other Blue Barns in Corte Madera & SF and I'm a fan..... The food has been good at the Novato location so far too. BUT...In hopes it will be helpful to get this place on track I want to leave my comments on what I don't like about this place: -it's just too expensive. The sandwiches are not worth $15+, especially when you're ordering at a counter and not being served. Everything is overpriced actually... -The salads I've gotten seem significantly smaller than the other blue barns I've been to. With the prices the size should be closer to the other ones I've been to.... And I've only been there twice so maybe I got a small order that is out of the normal. -They also seem to skimp on things such as giving you a quarter piece of a breadstick with your salad. When I asked for more breadstick they wanted to charge me. They literally give you about an inch long piece of bread. The other locations definitely are more generous in terms of giving you what you should get with your meal. -I asked for a couple simple things at the counter during my order and they were unwilling to do anything special. The girl taking order acted annoyed that I even asked to have half salad & half quinoa... which should be pretty simple because you can pick either for your order. I always find it weird when a restaurant won't do something simple like that for their customer. -It's also very annoying to have them turn the screen on you when you order and have it bluntly asking you to tip them.. Annoying to try and pass on paying your employees to your customers And I just find it plain weird that everybody is asking for tips now when they aren't even providing true waiter service.... it's also pretty hard to tip not having your food or knowing what type of service you will actually be getting. I would definitely remove the request for a tip from the ordering process. With all this being said I think this place has potential. They just opened and need to get their game together. It takes a while to do that.. A little bit of employee training and working on being a lot more willing to please their customers if they're going to charge quite expensive prices.... II'd love to see a response to giving a little bit more bread stick with the salad, and why they would ask us to tip at the counter which I find really borderline offensive with the price of the food. Would love to bump this up to a 4 or 5 star review once I hear back and return to try again which I plan to do.... read more

The food was great! The reason I am giving it three stars, and I hope their owners or management read this, is that are incredibly wasteful of plastic and paper. It is unnecessary. My daughter and I had lunch there, eating in their lovely, relaxed garden in Novato. We both received our order in a large paper bag with handles, even through we were eating in. My salad was served in a box, which made it very hard to toss, and again, was unnecessary. Our drinks were served in plastic cups, that had to be thrown out, as their was no recycle bin available. This was my first time there, and I hope that the owners figure something out. I just had lunch at Crepevine, and they served on plates and used glasses for those of us who were not take-out. Ditto for Taki in Novato. At the least, have separate recycling bins!, but the bags were totally unnecessary and wasteful, as were the glasses. Thanks for listening. read more

Yum, yum and yum. It's like having Rustic open at night, except better. We had really hearty Thai Chicken salads, and they were great. Really fresh ingredients, nice spicy dressing, and the ambiance is perfect. A warm inviting space, plenty of employees scurrying around getting things done, really clean. Free water glasses are good size, not the thimbles that you can find at other establishments when they are resentful that you didn't purchase a drink. I spoke to the owner, who advises that while sammies are only available until 3 PM, and Burgers after 4, once things get settled/dialed in, both categories will be available at all times. Because we are selective (closet foodies), we are thrilled to have another option for casual dining out. read more

Really happy to have Blue Barn in Novato. It is expensive but that's the price for good quality food! We went on the first weekend they were opened and the manager was greeting people in the very long line to let us know what they were out of. Very friendly and definitely appreciated the heads up as my husband wanted a burger but they had sold out. I had the burrata sandwich which I probably wouldn't order again but my daughter got the tostada salad which was delish and my husband got the turkey sandwich which he liked. The little kids got a kids grilled cheese and ate the whole thing, nice and thin for kids to hold and bite easily. The fries were also good. Wanted to try the tots but they were out. This a new spot for Novato / I'm a bit saddened as it replaces some history though I suppose I'm biased as I like dive bars- they do serve alcohol/ perhaps that's retaining it's past- service was good- order from menu- given a number and delivered- the tipping part is a bit confusing/ you're to tip in advance? Though you pay first so I suppose if you're inclined to tip tip 10-15%.good fries if you like fries. Overall give support to the new place and you'll be satisfied. Good for kids too. read more

Great outdoor dining with super fresh food. We miss dining out (actually out, not just take out), and were delighted to find the awesome outdoor dining space at the Novato location of Blue Barn. Combine that with the fresh food and this place is a winner. The salads were big enough that we shared one (Cobb) and then each had a bowl of their soup of the day (butternut squash). Had dinner recently at the new spot in Novato. The place is nice and the atmosphere was good. I ordered the Barn BLT and an iced tea. The Barn BLT was very good. I would reccomend it. The iced tea ($3.25) was in a small mason jar full of ice. When I asked for a refill it was provided along with a new charge of $3.25. Although I've never heard of iced tea refills being charged would have been nice to know ahead of time and geez......$3.25 twice....really? Oh and the soft serve machine was broken.....just like McDonalds. Maybe need some time to work out the problems. read more

These guys and rustic bakery will dominate the downtown sandwich scene and hopefully their success will attract many more of these type of dining options in Novato. We ordered for the office. They got the food ready really quickly, and we were able to pick it up very quickly. We had such a large order (8 or so people) so that was pretty impressive. Nothing was labeled however so we had to open each sandwich to see who it belonged to. The tots and fries weren't bad. I got the clubber, it wasn't too flavorful at all, could not really taste the pepperjack cheese, didn't really have a distinct flavor at all. So happy they opened a blue barn in Novato. The Barn BLT is so delicious. And of course their fries. On my last visit, I was offered a cocktail while I was waiting so I bought something called a "Strawberry field" it was also delicious. But dangerous. I recommend Blue Barn. Been there a few times before, seeing many dogs. This time I decided to bring my own dog very well trained but unable to become a service dog right now because of the pandemic. Thought they were dog friendly but I guess not. Their signs only specify that dogs are not allowed on the grass, nothing stating they have to be a service dog. Found an awesome place in Novato with a great menu right up the street! Service was great, food was great, and everyone welcomed my pup with open arms. Stay safe everyone read more

Omggg. What a place. I've been searching for an epic salad and sandwich spot and this place is dope. My favorite is the Thai chicken salad. Made with a homemade peanut and sumac dressing, this salad hits the spot every time. Also, I believe they use Mary's Chicken which is always a double score for me. Definitely recommend! read more

The vibe in this place is great and the staff and service is WONDERFUL! That being said- it ain't cheap. Two salads (with chopped chicken added) and two bottles of iced teas came to $63. I used to love the Blue Barn in Corte Madera - great seasonal salads; fresh, healthy and tasty daily soups; and a killer sandwich called the Ragin' Cajun which was my go-to favorite. I was very excited when they opened a location in my home town of Novato just prior to the pandemic, but disappointed that the menu was different than the Corte Madera location. Now ALL locations serve the same lack-luster options. All the sandwiches are either too rich or too sweet, and the salads I've tried aren't particularly tasty. My first attempt to enjoy the food at the Blue Barn was thwarted because the restaurant had run out of hamburger. My second attempt to enjoy the new restaurant was not great and happened yesterday. We ordered tomato soup, a turkey sandwich,(by mistake/misunderstanding) tater tots, a side cesar salad and the kids salmon which came with sugar snap peas and peas...and after realizing the turkey sandwich was not what I had wanted we ordered the clubber. In my opinion there was nothing special about the tomato basil soup. Flavor of the soup and the croutons was flat. Both sandwiches were very bready with large amounts of not very tasty turkey and the condiments the aioli and the mayonnaise felt like grease without much flavor on both sandwiches. The tater tots were deep fried which gave them a crunchy edge but those two had no flavor not even a bit of salt. The salmon was good. And the cesar salad dressing was tasty. The food tasted like it came from boxes and bottles - maybe I just ordered the wrong food items. The area in the back has seating and a group gathering area with cornhole and a few other things was very pleasant. The area in the back creates a nice family. read more
