This is a very nice clean and friendly cafe. They are only open for breakfast and lunch. The menu is simple and the food was excellent. We had breakfast and the eggs were cooked perfectly, the pancakes were like homemade and came out piping hot (the pancakes are the size of dinner plates btw!). The pancakes came out with an ample mound of butter and I didn't have to open a dozen small packages . My husband loves the corn beef hash and the country potatoes were fresh, not out of a bag. Not 4 stars because our service was so sketchy last weekend . 3 different people served us and not one of them got my order right. The check was delivered by a fourth and as a result our check was incorrect and they had to correct it. That's the bad part. The good: The food was really, really good. The corned beef hash was as good as previous reviewers stated. My egg platter was done perfectly and the portions were nicely sized. My dining companion appeared to have enjoyed his meal as well. My boyfriend and I frequent this place for breakfast and are never disappointed! We came in on a Saturday morning and it was pretty busy. Nonetheless, we had quick service and had our drinks and breakfast in no time. I ordered the huevos rancheros and he had the blue dolphin breakfast. Mine tasted great and there was plenty for leftovers. The pancakes he ordered were outstanding and melted in your mouth. We tried the recommended granola pancakes - yummy. I like yoghurt for breakfast, but I am having a hard time understanding the proportions yoghurt/granola at most restaurants. (More granola than yoghurt) And, here I had a new experience - granola as a side sprinkled on the fruit. I really like this place, but they serve watery coffee (worse than anywhere else on my Florida trip). Being European I like my coffee strong. But still, I would go back! :) No wifi. read more

A great breakfast spot! You will find well executed classic breakfast dishes here! No glitter and sprinkles that often times take away from great classic dishes. I always enjoy mustard on my sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches but I always taste it without first. This was so good I never even asked for mustard. Great classic home fry potatoes as well! Solid, convenient breakfast spot while on Longboat Key. I usually go with a pretty simple breakfast when I head out, and if you do it right, I'm happy. Over easy eggs were cooked well, no runny whites but a nice gooey yolk. Bacon was a little thin and crunchy for my taste. Sausage patties were good. Fruit was fresh, as well as the coffee. A bit too much butter on my toast, so I'll ask for them to leave it plain next time so I can do the honors ;). Cute, diner style dining with very friendly service. Recommended! What a great place to head for a weekend breakfast! The service was fantastic: our waitress was funny and attentive, and not at all concerned that we took over one of her tables for almost two hours. It looked like there was a little bit of a wait as the morning progressed, but nothing major. The four of us all ordered different things, two of us had omelets, another had the wrap, and the fourth had the banana granola pancakes. The pancakes were the hands-down winner. I ordered the California omelet, but had serious order envy the entire time we ate (and I may have had stolen several bites when the orderer was distracted). The coffee was excellent, and they were quick with the refills. Folks, if you love REAL corned beef hash, this is your place. They do such a good job, I could probably have it at least once a day for the rest of my life! Service was very good and attentive and the place, including the restroom, was clean. They buy their eggs from a local farm in Sarasota and they are tasty and cooked text-book. Had English muffins with my meal and they too were of goof flavor and not under/over cooked. The whole meal was dead on, no kidding! I tried checking in there and had issues with the Internet and the lady honored the buy one get the second meal at half off check-in special. Nice! We were the first to arrive on Tuesday morning, I didn't realize they opened at 9, but just as we sat down, two other families sat down around us. This was my last stop on a wonderful 36 hour stint with my best friend in town from NYC. Our drinks came out in a timely manner, I LOVED the mini biscuits they give you to start! I ordered the Greek omelet, it was DELICIOUS and hit the spot! I also asked for a side of bacon and it was cooked perfectly, not too greasy and not too underdone. I had a long drive ahead of me back to Fort Lauderdale, so I asked our server for a to-go coffee cup and she politely obliged. The only thing I found a little strange was that I noticed out of the corner of my eye that the servers stand inside at the little window or the front door and peek at the guests every three minutes or so, in order to see if they need anything, which I didn't mind, but a person with paranoia might freak out, haha. During our trip in Longboat Key, we came to this cafe twice for breakfast. The breakfast was very good. I'm not a potato eater but since my husband ordered his breakfast with potato in it, I tried it and it was very good. The cafe closes around 2 pm, so if you think of going here, enjoy breakfast and lunch only and find your dinner some place else *:) We had a friendly waitress who seemed happy with her job. That's important. When the staff happy, customers happy and vice versa. It's not a good reception to make phone calls or check Internet at this cafe. It didn't seem to pick-up wi-fi either. On this visit, I got the breakfast wrap- a vegetarian delight served on a spinach wrap and alongside a generous fruit plate. Including a tall grapefruit juice, it was a 10 dollar meal. The burrito was quite large and I ate half for breakfast and half for lunch. The seating is ample and our waitress was great, but they could benefit from a hostess. It is a tourist hot spot, and when we walked in there was no one to greet us or even a sign letting us know if we should seat ourselves. After a moment, someone did finally address us and that is when we realized there was a wait. After we had been seated, I saw several other parties experience the same awkwardness. Four of us stopped in for breakfast while vacationing in the area. The service was weird-3 different people waited on us. One took the drink order and brought the drinks, one took our food orders and brought the food, & another who brought the check. Odd. Anyway, 3 out of 4 of us enjoyed our meals. I had the bagel with salmon and cream cheese and it was delicious. My husband ordered a special, the crab Benedict and it was amazing!!! A friend ordered another special, the seafood omelet and he said it was very good. Another friend did not eat her meal-she ordered biscuits and gravy with bacon. I also ordered the corn beef hash and eggs based on a fresh local egg endorsement, and rave cbh reviews. The eggs were a great tasty choice, and the cbh was all it was supposed to be and more! Fresh and unique! The home fries were a little bland, but I wasn't going to take a star away from this gem of a place for an item that typically gets ketchup anyway. We've had many good breakfasts at Blue Dolphin. Unfortunately we finally had a bad meal on a day when the staff was having a bad Monday. Our outside table had not been cleaned or set, nor was this done when we asked for the table. We were seated at a dirty table with no settings, salt, pepper, condiments, sugars, etc. We asked for these things twice before we went inside to get it for ourselves. Our coffees and waters were never refilled. Our food was very much under the normal standards of the restaurant. The corned beef has was inedible, and looked like plastic balls of pink wax, not meat. Couldn't eat this meal. Didn't bother to send it back as we were already an hour in and late for work. Hoping for a better experience next time. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast. Since we're both gluten intolerant, we asked about the cafe's GF options. The waitress told us they have GF bread and can make French toast with it, so that's what I ordered. The GF French toast was excellent! My boyfriend ordered an omelette with baked potato slices. My spouse had the special breakfast and loved it. Good bacon especially. I had oatmeal, and excellent. Homemade steel cut oatmeal with butter, brown sugar and a bit of milk. Passed on the raisins. Not only is it overpriced but the facts are that they take big shortcuts that effect quality. The hostess told me that early each morning they crack a bunch of eggs into a pail and dip into them all day long. Well as fresh can be it is probably gone in the first 45 minutes to an hour! Result the omelets are practically tasteless and are dry as the eggs don't fair well after they have been sitting! Next is the potatoes, gone from our planet except for "Peaches" a 10 in anyones's book who knows quality are restaurants who actually make Hash Browns or Homes Fries on a grill, Blue Dolphin like every other "low quality as I am more interested in the money type of places" deep fry their's like they were a McDonald's. I do like the staff and coffe but over all save your self drive to Peaches in Anna Maria near the new Walgreens! oh and by the way the Beach Cafe that you pass, well keep driving as they have a filthy dirty kitchen maybe that is why the health department has closed them down! First time on Longboat and stopped for breakfast at this gem. Laid back, homey feel with servers that were very friendly and attentive. Coffee was very good and refills came quickly. Menu offered a lot of options that appealed to me and made my selection very difficult. I had the corned beef hash with two eggs over easy and fruit on the side. Topped the hash off with some good hot sauce and the dish was outstanding! The pumpkin pancakes intrigued me so I also tried one pancake which was huge. Not too pumpkinee and not too sweet, just perfect in my book! My wife had the huevos ranchero with side of grits and thought it was wonderful as well. Portions were very large and a value for the price. I usually stay in Sarasota when in Florida for business by will definitely make the trip back here for breakfast very soon. read more
