Best dive bar in the Chicagoland area!!!! Staff was great, perfect spots to watch games

Standard bar with many choices. There were a dozen people sitting around the bar (out of about 16 seats) and all seemed to be regulars. We sat and one of the 10 or so tables and enjoyed a fantastic italian beef sandwich, great greek salad, and quite good thin crust pizza. Very reasonable prices. Nothing fancy. read more

Busy local bar. Friday night fish fry was mediocre. At least 40 patrons in bar. One bartender/waitress. One person bringing out the food. Had to get up to give the bartender our order. Had to go back to the bar to get the bill. The exterior of the building is old and dirty. It needs major deep cleaning inside and out. A little updating wouldn't hurt either along with additional staff. read more

Definitely a hidden gem! This is now our favorite spot for the best thin crust pizza. Very thin and just the right amount of crispy. The flavor I cant explain what it is but is very good. Very small local vibe that welcomes everyone. read more

A place where everybody knows your name! I hadn't been to the Blue Heron in several years after having been an "out of town" regular for some time. A family illness kept me away for several years. A couple days ago I was in Barrington for the first time in a long time. I walked into the Heron and was treated like the Prodigal Son. Addie, still running the place, tending bar and cooking amazing pub food. The same bunch of regulars that I'd said goodbye to years ago greeted me as though I'd just left the room a minute ago. All sitting 6 feet apart and watching whatever sports can be found on TV. But there's more to the story than that. You see that ill family member was my wife of 33 years, Mary Jo. I had returned to Barrington to lay her to rest in the town of her birth. Upon learning the reason for my return Addie organized a (very) impromptu wake. He whipped up a rum and lemon concoction based on her drink of choice: Bacardi Limon and Diet Coke. He dubbed it the "Mary Jo Shot". Toasts were given and eyes grew misty. The Blue Heron is more than a building where you can watch a game, have a beer and get a great pizza. It's a community. It's an institution. One for which I will always be great full. I'll see you all next time I pass through town. read more

Based on the great reviews posted here, we wanted to try the Blue Heron. When we asked, we were told that the kitchen was closed "until the owner gets back because he is the cook." No indication when that would be was offered so we finished our drinks and left. Disappointing. read more

Just finished a fresh walleye dinner at the Heron . The fish is exceptional . Not sure if Addie serves the perch and walleye on other days but he has it on Friday for sure . Homemade tarter sauce and hot French fries make this a great meal under $20 . read more

I recently discovered this gem. Dissatisfaction with a nearby restaurant prompted me to step in. They've been here for over 35 years and have a great clientele. All are friendly and welcomed me in, and I soon became part of the group. Much like the CHEERS show. 8 TV's for all the sports. Great music, much local team memorabilia. The bar seats 20 with 3 booths, and tables. They have Guinness on tap, other beers on tap and bottled beer, wine and full bar. The owner is always there. He makes Football Sundays fun. It's 2021 and a global pandemic, how do they only take cash? While a carpet maker in Bangladesh without running water can have a credit card machine, apparently that's too much to ask for here. Looks like the typical dark, dingy, and sad local bar that hasn't seem a new customer in 30 years. Don't recommend. read more

This was our first visit to Blue Heron Cafe! Our first impression was a cozy neighborhood style bar with friendly patrons and staff. (Ruthie was very friendly and welcoming) We took Ruthie's suggestions and ordered the Patty melt and Italian beef. We also shared a basket of seasoned fries. Food was hot and delicious and we both cleaned our plates! We also liked the throwback songs in the jukebox! Happy birthday to the owner! We will be back again. read more

This is a great place for Cubs and Bears fans. The owner (or manager??)is friendly, kind, and a great cook. If your alone, dont worry! Go anyway. Your safe and everyone will talk to you. Watch a game there, drink and eat. The pizza is great. I had more fun catching up on Barrington (my home town) with the locals. They fed me, bought me drinks and invited me back.
