This is one of my favorite places to eat and drink. They have excellent service whether your sitting at the bar or at a table. They have a lot on their menu to choose from and everything is good. Skip the fish fry. I've had decent food here in the past. Probably should have ordered the Salmon with Asparagus.. but, our group of 5 seemed to be in the mood for a Friday Lent Fish Fry. This was described as 5 pieces of beer battered cod. So far, so good. I'm thinking, "Geeee 5 pieces! That's more like an "all you can eat" fish fry. To the contrary. What we each received was 5 "Fish Fingers". Pre-made, flavor-free, frozen, fish sticks. so disappointing. This was topped off by what "appeared" to be tartar sauce. Tasted like Horseradish and sour cream. Again, not good. Lesson learned. I'll stick with the Steak Bites and delicious salads I've eaten here in the past. We go here about once a week. Always fantastic service. Amazing food and good drinks. Their taps change seasonally! Their boneless wings are MASSIVE! A meal in itself really. Great restaurant in an area that used to have very few options for dining out. BUT, the interesting cups used for pop have an odd number of sides, in this case 9. We arrive at opening of 11 a.m. order before lunch rush and my ground beef nachos came with chicken instead. Took a long time to hail down waitress for a correction. Not very good anyway. Service was disappointing. Sat at the bar and one bartender walked past us several times and didn't even acknowledge our existence. Since my previous review, I've tried returning many times. The only consistently good thing is their food - service is terrible every single time. Don't waste your time and money at the Blue Heron Grill. The few times I ate there the service was terrible and the food was mediocre. I notice several other people saying the same thing. Here is the kicker: the Blue Heron has been causing those of us who live in the neighborhood lots of problems with their sound system. They refuse to turn down the bass when they have a DJ playing and it is quite irritating for those of us who live nearby. When I have complained, the owner, Chad Wagner, was initially apologetic but it soon became clear that it was all for show and business meant more to him than being a good neighbor. What is ironic is that given all the negative comments, I would suspect they could do without the loud DJ and sound system and just start serving better food with good service and business would take care of itself. Note: I would give it 0 stars but I don't think Yelp will let me do it. read more

My family and went here for lunch when we walked in there were not many people in the restaurant we stood in the entryway waiting to be seated for about 10-12 minutes without being greeted we had to look around for someone to seat us, on our way to our table we were almost run down by an employee that cut me off while I was walking and didn't even say excuse me the service was not very good for the amount of people that were there and my food was good but my mother salad had rock hard black tomato's on it definitely something that shouldn't be served to a guest if you want to go here for lunch go somewhere else read more

I have always loved the Blue Heron Grill, it has been a family favorite forever but lately the quality of food has just gone down. The servers are always kind and timely, but the food has been lacking. I ordered a Ceaser Salad with Chicken. When the order arrived I noticed right away that the chicken was either very old or had previously been frozen. It was dry and flavorless. I pushed it to the side of the plate and kept eating. Eventually as I dug deeper into the Salad I found a hair :( I was really disappointed. My friends meal was perfect, so I'll give credit for that. Fresh chicken on salads should be expected. Worst experience I have had dinning in a long time! Asked for the kids food and drink to be out right away. 25 minutes later my nachos arrived without any kid food. The nachos were cold and we had no napkins for our dinning experience after I asked for them. Lorilee was overwhelmed with her three tables and probably should start looking to retire. read more

My friends and I go here for drinks a few times. The food tastes great - I usually get the cheeseburger with fries. The downside - it usually takes a while for service and being asked if we would like another drink. I was there with my friend recently and was only served one beer and never was asked if I wanted another drink with my meal. I enjoy going here for the K102 and other events they put on. read more

I have been greatly disappointed by both the service and quality of food at The Blue Heron. Prior to its opening I was very excited at the prospect of having a bar and grill type restaurant in Hugo because restaurant options are rather limited here but have unfortunately been unhappy with each visit. The food is mediocre at best and over priced. The drink prices are also rather expensive and for some reason they don't consider Leinenkugel or Summit (both locally brewed) to be "domestic" beers. The last time I was there we had to wait over fifteen minutes for our waitress just to take our drink order and we were the only people in the dining room. We've given the Blue Heron tries but now we will not be going back. Even though it is the closest restaurant to us by far, it is worth a 10 minute drive to have better service, food and prices. read more

This place has great potential yet everytime I visit I feel short changed. The food is okay , the atmosphere is nice. The prices are way to high for the quality and quantity. Most importantly the service is poor. I have been here numerous times (long enough apart that I imagine that the service HAS to be better than last time) and each time been disappointed. Unfortunately there is not enough competition around to give them the wake up call and improve on one of the most important aspects of dining...service. My sister and I stopped in here last night. Great appetizers, the calamari were incredible! Also the $5 margaritas were delicious!! The best part of the night was Brittany our server! We had business in Hugo last night and asked a family member if there were any places to eat there. :-) She directed us to the Blue Heron and it was our good fortune to hit $5 Burger Plate night. For five dollars it was a burger (with up to four "toppings" at no added charge) and fries. Tough to beat. The fries were really good and the burger was good, too. No complaints about the food. Service was good. I would have given it another star if the waitress hadn't asked us if we "want any change back" from the $20 bill we paid the check with. I was too stunned to say yes so her tip was about 25% of the bill. Bad form. What other business asks if you want your change back? read more

Dropped in for super on our way back from the cabin. 30 plus minutes to get our food. Server- Shana M. (as reflected on the credit card slip) was flat out rude and inattentive. We told the manager that the food was slow and she informed us that they were really busy. The kids were not offered ice cream which was a part of their meal. Why do I continue to visit this place? Probably a matter of convenience as there is not a lot to choose from in my hamlet of Hugo. Last Sunday was a prime example of the typical Heron experience. My wife and I were strapped for time, so we stopped for a quick beer and app. After telling the bartender our respective brands, she asked, "Tall or short?" We opted tall. Later, after washing my hands I noticed the less-than-obvious sign advertising Happy Hours specials. Apparently we were in the middle of Happy Hour and short droughts were $3. So, instead of the bartender informing us of the special, we paid $6.75 for 22 ounces of beer when I could have had 32 ounces for $6. Thanks. The most iconic thing happened next. When I picked up the never-absorbent cloth napkin from my table, the knife fell to the floor just as a empty-handed server was about to walk by. I got up and retrieved the knife while she stood there waiting for me to get out of her way. There was no, "Let me get that for you", or even a "Let me take that for you", or even a proactive, "Let me get you a new one". This cannot be excused due to being busy, there were 15 people in the place and the bartender was spending twice the time cleaning as serving. Please, please someone open a new place in Hugo that offers reasonable service and prices. Heron is about 30% more than you would expect elsewhere. read more

A good place to grab lunch or appetizers if you are in the general area. Overall, the dishes are generally overpriced. In general, I would classify the food as "a notch above traditional bar food." The patio is nice, and the beer selection is above average. It is one of the better places to meet people between Forest Lake and Shoreview, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. read more

Everything was good EXCEPT the salmon. Seriously not good. Which surprised me cause I make terrible salmon and this was on par with mine. I never thaw mine cause I'm in a hurry and it comes out thin and dry and chewy. So does blue heron's. Surprisingly they say it's one of their specialties! Mom and step dad loved their pasta dishes so I guess your safe with those options. Loved the warm bread and butter and crab cakes. Comfort food mmmm. Three times and they're out. gave the locals a fair shot. Terrible food, awful and uncomfortably loud atmosphere. We did have awesome service from the waitress tonight. They need a real cook, you certainly pay enough for all of the menu items! Cheese curds not done, pot stickers too done. Our group tried candied salmon, the walleye and a pasta dish. Salmon was a lump of brown sugar (not exaggerating) and was rock hard, overcooked, mostly inedible except the very center. Pasta dish had sickly sweet brown syrup around the edges and the taste clashed with the cream sauce. Walleye looked like the just took it out of the frozen food section next door and then overcooked it. Mashed potatoes were strange and sweet. Will not be back. read more

My four year old was yelling that she was hungry the whole way up the interstate - so we saw the restaurant sign on the interstate and decided to stop here for something different. I ordered a French Dip and my wife ordered a pasta dish - tortellini. The good : my wife's pasta dish was great and she told me it was really nummy. The cons: My French Dip had the most solid, stale bun I ended up picking the meat off of the sandwich and dipping it in the Aus Jus. It was so rock hard (like past crouton style) that when the waiter stopped to ask how everything was I picked up a huge piece of the bun and hit it repeatedly (thud, thud). He said "Stale"? A complete rhetorical question. I worked in restaurants for almost a decade and I told him not to worry about it. I also upgraded to the onion rings that arrived cold, soggy, and dripping with fryer grease. Nasty, I ordered a side of their special "sour cream" dip and it arrived runny and not at all sour-cream like. It was like someone went out of their way to make it gross. Regular sour cream would have been great, but this stuff tasted like it was yogurt mixed with ranch mixed with water into a thin, tasteless cup. After a bill of almost $60, we left. I left a tip but not a great tip. I left $8 which isn't great for a meal that was more than $55 before tax. As others have posted, our waiter told us when we asked about the items, that this was only his third time as a waiter and didn't know, but could find out. Go to Applebees; predictable but boring is a lot better than overpriced hit and miss soggy crap. Will not go back here... ever.... Three draught beers cost us $21 - which was a significant add to our beer, but all in all, still not a good deal or some place I'd take a date after I dump my wife three years from now. Each time we've visited, the food has been great. We hosted a few birthday celebrations at the Blue Heron Grill and the staff was phenomenal. 1/13/17 Ate here with my husband . He ordered the fish and chips the fish and fries were very greasy. I squeezed a French fry and the grease dripped out. Also the fries were tasteless I ordered a burger and the meat tasted so funny that I didn't finish it. The service also was not good . It's a shame what they charge for this awlful food. When we left I kept eating mints to get rid of the grease taste in my mouth. My mouth felt grease coated the rest of the day. read more
