Our first order of business in Vernonia was to get our Greek on, and where better to pop in for lunch than the Blue House Café? Blue is definitely the operative word when it comes to the interior décor: everything from the walls, to the seats, to the little bottles and glasses on the mantle over the counter share a deep, radiant cerulean hue that creates a nice, casual, welcoming ambiance. I like it. Instead of table service, ordering is done at the counter; grab a table of your choice (indoor or out; there's a little patio up front, and on the side as well), and your order will arrive in a reasonably short amount of time. My wife and I split the Dolmades platter, hummus with pita bread, and a side of beef/lamb with tzatziki. The Dolmades were thankfully fresh, handmade and delicious: too many casual Mediterranean places skate by on the canned stuff, which is vastly inferior to the real thing. In fact, these were the best I've had anywhere. Similarly, the only flaw with the hummus and the meat is that we ran out of them; we would have ordered more, if we weren't stuffed already! True to the name, you can order all manner of coffee, tea and espresso drinks here, as well as a small selection of ice cream, pastries and other desserts (baklava!). Other available beverages include a complimentary water station, seasonal lemonades, and alcoholic options such as beer, wine and...gluhwein? Okay, *THAT* is a little out of place, but I do enjoy a mug of the stuff on occasion...but usually only on a cold winter evening. I couldn't see myself sucking one down on a hot midsummer's day, as it was during our visit. But hey, to each their own! Despite being swathed in sapphire and absorbed in its azure ambiance, it's impossible to feel blue after dining here at the Blue House Café! Although our experience in town is limited, there doesn't appear to be a finer dining option anywhere in Vernonia. Very recommended, all around!

    Love the indoor bike parking!

Great food, great service, and indoor bike parking. Kids loved it too, especially the crepes and drinks. The Gyro was fabulous!

This place is so cute with excellent food. Smells awesome too (zattar)! The service was excellent and it was the perfect birthday brunch for my beau!

    Mezza sampler.

We were able to try a wide variety of dishes, and every single one was exceptional. I have dietary restrictions (no onions or garlic), and the kitchen and staff were incredibly accommodating. They prepared separate versions of several dishes for me without hesitation, and I never felt like I was getting a lesser experience. It's rare to find a restaurant that can accommodate food sensitivities so thoughtfully while still delivering incredible flavor. The food was absolutely delicious from start to finish, and the service was impeccable. The staff was warm, attentive, and made our birthday celebration feel special without ever being overbearing. Everyone in our group left talking about how amazing the food was. We couldn't have asked for a better meal or a better overall experience. Mediterranean Exploration Company has definitely earned a spot on our list of favorite Portland restaurants, and we can't wait to come back.

It ended up being a great spot. The ambiance is great and the bartender was pleasant. They have a seasonal menu, which assures me that we're going to get the freshest produce possible. We started with the Labneh & Confit Butternut Squash. It was fine, but not my favorite dish of the night. The labneh was more like Greek yogurt than cheese, which isn't a bad thing, but I would have liked a little more saltiness. The Harissa Spice Shrimp, on the other hand, was fantastic. Definitely the standout item we actually ordered. The Baked Eggplant was good too, although it didn't quite wow me. I think there was some mix up, as we were first served the Roasted Eggplant Dip. We flagged the server down to say it wasn't what we ordered, but they let us keep it. Boy were we happy about this! It was the best dish of the night (and a must reorder). The pita to go with the Labneh and the Dip was excellent too. Piping hot and just right.

We were warmly greeted when we arrived. The menu is a little confusing for vegetarians, but we figured it out. Basically you can pick whatever is on the menu and choose what protein you want on it. We really wanted falafel however it's no longer available. They use a pea protein instead. Minus a star here as I think the pea protein while tasty, really changes the dishes we had. I had a shawarma wrap, SCW a gyro and we also got an order of hummus which came with pita. The food itself was good. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The tomatoes stood out for me as better than usual. The pea protein was tasty but added a different flavor profile than I was really looking for. When you want falafel it just doesn't taste the same. The hummus was good as was the pita bread. The service was great. I enjoyed the meal but I would not seek it out again simply because of the pea protein option. Of course it's great they offer a meat substitute but it wasn't something I would seek out for Mediterranean food.
