Such a great place to escape the storm. Very nicely decorated. I enjoyed the outside feel and being able to hear the rain hit the roof. I had the seafood chowder and it was the best chowder I've ever had! It had haddock, salmon, mussels and scallops and came with a biscuit. The large was very filling and I was not able to finish it. My brother had the haddock dinner. Looked good with breaded haddock and very well seasoned potato wedges. They also had a few plaques that stated they won a few PEI chef competitions. Waited 2.5 hours on our only night here and then told another 30 minutes. Nice spot but don't waste your time waiting.

We checked in from Yelp for a family of 5, arrived about 30 min later, expect a 20 min Waite, then proceeded to wait about an hour to be seated. It was a little rainy and cold, the servers theorized that people were ordering lots and not moving quickly. The smoked charchucherie board was amazing. Also enjoyed the linguine. The mussels were very good, too. We decided to try dessert - had the chocolate potatoe cake, strawberry swirl cheesecake and chocolate peanut butter cake. They were all good. Staying in New Glasgow Highlands RV PK. Arrived late and needed good place for dinner. The owners gave us a few options including this place. Now we are from San Diego, CA and wife is gourmet cook. Had no real expectations this time of season. We loved the whole experience. The halibut was the chef's special and excellent. The mussels were tops. Even the beer on tap and my wife's chard were good. And despite the fact that we had to wait in the bar for a table, the young attractive hostess and cordial bartender made us feel like royalty. We went close to the end of their season so they had the heating lamps on but still a bit chilly but very cozy but the view was amazing - not busy at all when we went at arouncd 5:30pm but lineup started shortly afterwards. Staff was super friendly and always ready to help. I highly recommend the seafood chowder - more like a stew, delicious and filling. The haddock and desserts were all really good too. We had a disappointing evening recently at this restaurant. We were required to wait for over 30 minutes, though a group which arrived after us and was not on the waiting list was seated before us. The noise level in the restaurant was far too high for conversation. The haddock coating was too salty, the bubbly bake was too sparse on seafood, the Caesar salad was too mayonnaise-y, and the bruschetta had no flavour. The servers seemed to be in a rush to get us out the door. Plates, utensils and silverware were removed as soon as one of us finished, even though the others were still eating. The server reached over in front of those still eating in order to gather up dishes. The diner had to put her fork down and lean back from the table to let the server reach across the table. There was one staff person who stood at the front watching all the diners and reporting over a headset microphone when tables were finishing. Overall, the food was so/so and the ambiance and service were rushed and uncomfortable. I've dined here before and this time was far less enjoyable than previous experiences. Hopefully they will work things out as the season progresses. read more

We returned to Blue Mussel as soon as we could on our trip this time! I had the chowder (DUH) and the vegetarian quiche. Both were so fresh and wonderfully delectable. Also ordered at the table: mussels, lobster roll, seafood bake. Everyone loved EVERYTHING. (You know when no one is speaking...) While the food was solid the service lacked We waited in line for a table for longer then they advised but I cannot really complain about that as it is too much out of their control. The real issue was once we sat down and ordered the time it took to have our meal served was unacceptable. While the apps came in a reasonable time period the time between the app and the main course was close to 45 minutes. When we mentioned this to our server she seemed to disappear. When we asked for the manager her comment was when you wait that long for a table you should expect to wait that long for a meal. Odd comment. Also all of the tables around us who came after were not only served before us but had completed their meal In the end the manager did comp part of the meal ( which she should have said at the start once she was aware of the concern) and they did apologize but frankly it took to long and seemed a bit disingenuous. We tried to get a seat the night before but the wait was 1 1/2 hours. That was the first clue that this was a special restaurant. Today, after kayaking all day, my girl slipped in and found a table for two! Only a brief wait for a table this time. Honestly, it would have been worth the 90 minute wait the night before. The food here is simply amazing. I enjoyed the scallops and my girl tried the lobster Mac and cheese. I have never had better scallops. The quality of the product and the way it was prepared was excellent. We both added the home made potato salad. This was interesting. I was expecting potato salad the way my mom used to make it. Nope. It looked like a ball of mashed potatoes. And it tasted great. We finished the evening with blueberry pie. It was not sweet at all and that was a good thing. It allowed me to taste the berries instead of sugar. The owner spoke with us and gave us some insight into the takeover of the restaurant. If you are anywhere near North Rustico harbour you really should eat here. read more

Stopped in for lunch. A couple, we ordered one lobster roll and one lobster dinner. The lobster dinner was superb and very artistically arranged. The lobster meat was very fresh and sweet. The lobster roll had a generous amount of lobster meat but it was in mayonnaise and lemon so it had a somewhat sour taste. We cleaned both plates. After we were finished the owner came by and asked us how we like our meal. I mentioned that we loved the lobster dinner but were a little disappointed with the lemon juice in the lobster roll. He immediately took the roll of the bill. That act, combined with our view of many very appetizing plates going by while we were waiting for ours convinced me that this was a first rate restaurant. read more

This was such a lovely restaurant by the beach and along the scenic route of PEI. It was highly recommended from our hostess in the bed and breakfast we stayed at, so we had to check it out. The food was really good, the best chowder we have had in the 5 days of our vacation. The owners are really great and genuinely care for the food. The menu was heavily based on seafood. We had a little bit of everything, like the chowder, fish cakes and the lobster wrap. Everything was good, but boy, I felt like I should have just ordered 2 chowders instead, its hard to share when its so good. It does come out a little hot and I burned my tongue trying to eat it. Though, their drinks menu is a bit limited and not much of a cocktail selection. The most interesting item on the menu was a Chocolate Potato Cake which was a rendition of a Chocolate cake but flour is replaced with mashed potatoes. Crazy that this place isn't on Yelp yet. Anyway, Blue Mussel Cafe seems to be something of a shellfish destination in the 'Green Gables' area of PEI - if perhaps a SLIGHTLY off the beaten path destination. I had very mixed feelings that evened out to still being overall very positive. The location really can't be beat in my book: considering how otherwise touristy this part of the island is (just minutes from Cavendish/Green Gables and the Nat'l Park), North Rustico Harbor has a relatively utilitarian, seafaring vibe. Lobster pots and clunky-looking deep sea fishing tour companies rather than faux Avonleas and t-shirt shops. Rustic even, but with all the charm and bucolic bliss one expects of rural PEI. The restaurant itself is nothing much aesthetically, but its nestled comfortably in amidst this, on a little marshy inlet of the harbor looking back toward the incredibly picturesque village of North Rustico. Food-wise, the place comes highly recommended in the guidebooks and stuff, and I can't say we were disappointed. That said, they had "just run out" of a surprising amount of things for 7:30pm (including a delicious-sounding halibut steak and the strawberry shortcake they're known for). But we had the grilled salmon (the last one!) and the scallops - both were solid, the salmon in particular was great, as were some truly excellent oysters we had to start. The local wine was only decent, particularly at $9 a glass, and the "local beers" included a few decent choices from the Maritimes (but none from PEI; our server said there were no breweries on the island, which we'd learned first hand in Charlottetown the previous day is not true). Regardless, overall a delicious and filling island dinner in an amazing, beautiful location. Not a huge 5 star guy but wow. We stay in NR 2 weeks every year. This was our first time here, can't believe we didn't discover this place last year. We heard the location had gone through a few owners so we weren't sure how it would be but the menu looked interesting and I was caught by the simple branding. Great greeting staff. Seems like whomever is floating can take care of the table in all aspects, drinks, greetings, etc. our waiter was just perfect, very helpful, and very good at what he does. The owner was making his way around the tables talking to everyone for a few mins. Turns out we have our original growing up place in common. I'm in the seafood industry so we chatted and geeked out on the seafood details. I really hope he makes it with this place, branding is relevant and perfect for the location, great alternative to the over priced meals around the corner. My meal - chefs famous linguini. By far one of my top 5 meals in my last 5 years of travel. The musses were insane for how much you got for the cost. The beer choices of locals were perfect but the night aw made at my entree. My wife had the haddock and as new englanders said it was the best she's ever had, mainly the light breading coating, the owner gave us the peek-a boo of how they prepare the haddock. Minimalistic but on point. Can NOT wait to go back and will be our annual go to. Really hope he makes it he's hooked us. read more

The food is probably good but we didn't actually eat there despite wasting a good hour and a half of our time. We were told the wait would be about an hour. An hour and a half later, we were told it could be another 35 minutes, maybe. We had two kids and had waited long enough. How long have they been in business? If it's going to be a 2 hour wait, just say so upfront so that people can set expectations and not spend their limited vacation time waiting around for a table. I can understand being off by a bit, but being off by an hour or more is not acceptable. My family used to own a hotel so I fully understand the impact no show reservations can have, but a business needs to consider the clients needs as well as their own. By contrast, The Pearl takes reservations but also takes a credit card so they can charge the no shows as it has a significant impact on their business. There's no reason the blue mussel Cafe couldn't do something similar rather than only considering their own preferences. read more

Incredible place. The mussels in traditional wine and garlic were amazing. Their pastry chef Helen deserves a 5 star rating for her fresh PEI blueberry pie and also her pecan pie. I heard lots of good things about Blue Mussel Cafe and signed up for Yelp to learn more. Sadly, the "Good for Groups = Yes" is misleading. The cafe won't sit parties of more than 6. I learned this the hard way when I showed up on Saturday with my guests. We were 9 in total and were told we'd have to be split into two tables and those could be at opposite ends of the restaurant and sat at different times. Fair enough, I understand you take your chances when you can't make reservations BUT I reached out to the cafe several days in advance by email, phone and Yelp and did not receive a reply from any of my inquiries to double check the "Good for Groups" rating of "Yes." All was not lost, we found alternative dining arrangements elsewhere and thoroughly enjoyed our evening. It was the highlight of my weekend. Must go -- have 5-star review to write! read more

Visiting the East Coast for the first time. Blue Mussel was recommended by multiple sources. I cannot tell you how fantastic this restaurant was.......but I'm going to try. Also in my tips the first thing you need to know is there is a long wait all the time. If you are dropping in make sure you add an additional 90min before you sit. Blue Mussel and Yelp figured that one out and you can add yourself to the wait list remotely, which I would highly recommend. The service was absolutely amazing (if Sebastian is back from University, you'll be lucky to have him). Food quality was over the top and portions were fantastic. Favorite place on PEI! Went for a week-long vacation all across the island and did our best to eat as much tasty food as possible and this ended up being our favorite (everything we had was delicious) so we went back a second time. Tried the pan-fried fish, alfredo with both the scallops and chicken (get the scallops - but I'd try the veggies next time I went), classic mussels, seafood chowder and pork belly sandwich. Other notes: service is overall excellent. I'm pretty certain we had the owners son the first time we visited and he was *excellent*. Second time, we had a local kid from down the street. Meh. Ignored us and focused on the locals. That being said, there was a bunch of other staff that cleared the table and brought the food to us so we weren't ignored, just not able to connect with our main server. The atmosphere is perfect. You'll have a view of one of the bays from wherever you sit so it can get pretty windy, depending on where you sit. There are blankets for you to grab all over the place if you want to warm up! This is the second time that I have been to PEI and the Blue Mussel Café was at the top of my list to visit again. We had actually gone twice for lunch during our visit. While the first time was excellent, the second time definitely left me not wanting to return. Even though our experience was not how we would have hoped the food was still delicious. We had gotten there shortly after they opened and when we requested to sit by the window, the hostess seemed a little annoyed that we would request that. Especially considering it wasn't busy and there were quite a few empty tables throughout. Next our server almost immediately came up and asked us if we were ready to order. We had only been sitting down for a short period of time and asked her to come back. Within a couple minutes she again was back asking for our order and we had asked for a few minutes again. She had then walked to the bar and came back asking a third time all within 5 minutes. I finally tell her that we will put our menus at the end of the table when we are ready to order. Once we ordered and ate our food, our plates were picked up almost immediately after we finished. I fully respect that the Blue Mussel Café is a busy place and recommended by locals so table turnover is very important to give as many people the experience as possible. With that being said, there is a much more appropriate way to move tables along. As a customer coming in with the possibility of waiting and knowing that the meals are higher priced, I feel like I should be able to enjoy myself start to finish without having someone hover over the table constantly and rush me out the door. read more

There's so many things to like about the restaurant. We went for lunch on the way to Cavendish. Location is great. It feels so relaxing being in there and I guess the area is quite popular since I saw cars from all over US and Canada We ordered the lobster dip for a starter and it was really delicious. I forgot the name of my dish but had a bit of everything: fish, lobster and scallops. A real treat! Price is also reasonable for the location and the amount of food you get. I wanted an ice cream but I was full enough to skip. This place is definitely worth it if you're driving nearby read more
