Sat at the bar toward the end of a Thursday evening. I was struck by the upscale atmosphere of the restaurant, given its unassuming location near a gas station. Don't let that deter you! Okay, either I need to stick to the good places I know and stop trying new places or just stop expecting early 2000 service. I ordered a lemon drop for $8 with no vodka but he did make it right. I was ignored for my entire stay and he forgot about my food, said he would get it but did several other things along the way. I waited for a long time. Overall, it's okay but they need friendly help and make sure to come back to make sure I didn't need anything else because I had to go get Wasabi and other condiments from the sushi bar. Ambience is really good for both hibachi and regular seating area. I was there was hibachi. My friend was there for her first hibachi experience. But our server didnt put up a show, he just cooked our food and did some small pranks at the end. But the cook on the next table did all the usual hibachi pranks, so I guess it was our cook and not the place. But the food was good so we didnt care much. read more

A little on the pricey side at $13-$18 per specialty roll. My bill was $30 for two rolls and a water. The sushi I had was very filling and delicious! The staff were friendly and efficient. I tried the Hawaiian roll and the crunchy spicy tuna roll. I would get either of these again anytime. Overall, it was a good experience. Let me begin this post with The fact that I NEVER write reviews, ever (my husband is usually the one to write if he is dissatisfied). I took it upon myself to not only get on yelp but to also download the app so could save anyone possible from the awful experience we had last night. My mom was visiting the area and we were craving some sushi so we decided to try Blue Ocean. Upon arriving, we were immediately seated at a table. That was the beginning of a completely dreadful experience. It took over 15 minutes after being seated for a server to even greet us. We ordered the spicy edamame and water. The server took another 15 minutes, still having no drinks or edamame (second time to the table with nothing in hand). He finally brought us our appetizer and apologized for the wait; he told us the ticket that he put in was lost and he had to reorder. The edamame was delicious but hard to enjoy without anything to drink! We asked for a second time if we could have some water. Upon the fourth time around to the table, he brought us our water and said he felt bad about the service thus far and wanted to make it up to us by giving us a sake on the house (more to follow on this later). For dinner we ordered the California roll, the spicy tuna roll and the spicy tuna roll. It took another 30-45 minutes to bring out our food and each roll was brought out one at a time. The first roll that was brought out was the California Roll which was pretty good. The food went down hill from there. Next we were brought the spicy tuna roll. On first try, it was room temperature and tasted super fishy and pretty unbearable to eat. The final roll, spicy salmon was brought out and it literally took everything in my power to keep it in my mouth it was so gross. It tasted even worse than the tuna roll. The fish did not taste fresh at all and once again left a horrible after taste. It would have been nice to rinse my mouth out with water, but yet again, my drink was never refilled. Once we were done eating, the server brought out my free saki that was promised...I don't know about anyone else, but I prefer my saki prior to my meal not as I'm asking for the check. We did not finish the sushi and told the server that it tasted off. He returned to the table quickly to tell us that the chef said he would not do anything about this since they received that fish this morning. In my opinion, if a customer has a complaint or concern about food/service a personal visit from the manager should occur. This never happened. To sum the experience up, food was horrible, service was even worse. You go to a restaurant for the food and return for the service. Unfortunately I would never ever return for either. I work at a hospital and the sushi that we serve in our cafeteria was better than this (which says a lot). Save yourself a trip and go elsewhere!!!! read more

I wanna give you all five stars. I wanna give them to you SO BADLY. But I can't. Because your staff is the most ornery bunch of people I have ever been in contact with, ever. And I come from a stifling Asian family, so I know ornery. Let me just say that I have never had a bad meal here. Ever. And I eat here on the reg - even though it's in a completely obscure location (off of 121 and Macarthur exit, in the shopping center of a friggin 7-11!!), I still find it to be worth the trip. Interior: KINDA WEIRD. It's not like "Oh I question the integrity of this place" weird, but it's definitely a little off. First off, it's always really dark inside, regardless of time of day. And for a small restaurant, they have very high ceilings... WITH CHRISTMAS LIGHTS IN THE SHAPE OF A STAR. There is table seating, a sushi bar, and a bar-bar with a modest TV. Pretty standard set up. Oh, and they have a lot of ships everywhere.I mean, I like festive garb, but I'm just confused about the theme here. But hey, Blue Ocean, you do you. Twinkle twinkle. People and staff: Everyone eats here. I have seen business dudes with ill-fitting polos and work ID's strapped to their hip to gym rats and raging alcoholics. It's primarily run by what a married couple. The sweet, docile man behind the bar is the husband. He always remembers me and my drink of choice, and his wife runs the floor (and it seems, the marriage) with an iron fist. She's not as friendly as her husband, but she HUSTLES. And has clearly taught her staff to do the same (not a lot of small talk or smiles from servers, but I can live with that). So good for them for finding each other! Then opening a restaurant! Vittles and libations: Fresh, solid selection, and consistent. Full bar. Service isn't lightening fast, but how can it be when you're serving sushi and doing it the right way? Conclusion: It's good food and sometimes good food means you have to deal with a shitty staff to get it. There are worse things in life. You know, like genocide and shit. read more

First time! So fresh and delicious! Went there with a client who has been there many times before and who "loves sushi". I love me some sushi too, but I wasn't prepared for this. The fish is incredibly fresh, the options are plentiful and creative, and the presentation! Well, for example the smoked salmon sashimi came out-2x2 inch slices of buttery deliciousness arranged on the plate like a rose with a palm leaf accent. The rolls themselves were so on point: not too much rice, just enough to hold it together. Inventive combinations in the rolls and sliced just thinly enough so that each bite held together but not so thickly that you had chipmunk cheeks wnen eating. Lovely decor and atmosphere. The owner came out and introduced himself to us and he was a very gracious guy. They also have some other asian specialities such as thai, so when you go, explore! We will absolutely be back. This place is horrible!!! Don't give them your business, even if there is a Groupon. Get a refund. First we were told to come back in an hour by the hostess because we had no reservation and since we wanted to sit and enjoy at the hibachi grill and told her exactly that, we agreed. When we went back, Ivona (or at least that's the name she gave us) asked me if we had a Groupon, she then told us we'd have to wait for another half an hour or so to sit at the hibachi grill!!! Unless we wanted to eat right now, then she'd sit us at a regular table and bring the food over from the hibachi grill. I can't believe they would treat any customer this bad. Food: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Service: 2 Price: 3 The food was amazing. Everything I ate seemed very fresh, and they had some good specialty dishes. Their fried rice was really good. The rice was cooked perfectly, it was seasoned perfectly, etc. What you get for the price just isn't great. We ordered eggrolls for $6, and it was 6 itty-bitty bite-sized egg rolls. The fried rice was probably twice as expensive as it should've been--$12 for a fairly small portion. But it tasted so good, I would get it again anyway. The service was pretty terrible. We went in for a "quick" lunch and after 45 minutes, didn't even have an appetizer to eat yet. It seems like every time I went to take a sip of my drink, it needed to be refilled (STILL). We were there for over an hour and that was after rushing the waiter, talking to the manager, paying as soon as the food came, and taking half of our meals to go. Ridiculous. Six of us were eating, all on seperate checks, and gratuity was already added. We were sitting at the bar. Just seems weird. Yes, I'm a self-proclaimed sushi snob. It takes a lot to impress me at a place with the word "sushi" in it's name. And as it should. Eating raw fish can mean you either spend the night with a full tummy...or on your bathroom floor. I've experienced both and surprise, surprise I rather be full. With that said, Blue Ocean is one of the BEST places I've ever had sushi. Sure it's in a weird strip-mall location next door to a 7/11 and car wash....but trust me it's not what it looks like. I like to call it a hidden gem. The atmosphere is great for date night or girls night out....nice low lighting, a waterfall wall, white tablecloths, a HUGE, beautiful bar...and most importantly a packed house. You know it's going to be good when you ALWAYS have to wait at least 30 minutes to be seated. The staff are all super sweet and very attentive. My drinks are always full and they give you updates on how your rolls are doing. How sweet. There are tons of specialty rolls....I've never been disappointed with any of them. The fish is always fresh and the rolls are very beautiful and creative. Of course they have all the usual rolls and sashimi...all also nice and fresh. You can't go wrong at Blue Ocean. So the next time you're craving sushi, and don't want to spend an arm & a leg....travel on down to Lewisville and check out Blue Ocean. I usually frequent Daan Sushi in Grapevine, but decided to try this place based on the positive reviews on Yelp as well as the closer proximity to my house. Based on my experience, I will be sticking with Daan in the future. My major issue was with the sushi I ordered, which was of extremely poor quality. The tuna used in my spicy tuna roll was noticeably "off" to the point that I could not finish it due to the revolting aftertaste. I couldn't belief that any sushi chef would actually serve this to a customer. I think that really says a lot about the care these employees are putting into their food and their service. I also ordered agedashi tofu, which was generally good. For those of you that have not had this very traditional dish, it typically consists of small pieces of lightly breaded tofu served with a "dashi" based dipping sauce. A few problems with Blue Ocean's version. First, the tofu pieces were enormous, making them difficult to eat. To me, this is just indicative of lazy cooking. The accompanying sauce tasted fine. At Blue Ocean, they serve this dish with a pile of sauteed jalapeno and scallion on top. The result is that the crusting on your tofu is ruined before it even makes it to your table. My entree was simply disgusting. I must emphasize here that I am extremely non-picky eater and like almost anything. I ordered lemongrass chicken, thinking that sounded like a nice flavor for chicken. The amount of lemongrass on the chicken was crazy! Extremely overpowering. Whoever prepped the dish had not prepped the lemongrass properly, as hard pieces which aren't intended for consumption were included in the sauce. I was picking these out of my teeth for hours. I did find it slightly cute that they shaped the rice into a fish (complete with a green pea for an eye), but that wasn't enough to save this abysmal creation. Whoever created this dish has no business cooking professionally. That's my two cents. Perhaps there are other, lovely dishes on their menu, but for me it's three strikes, you're out! read more

You got your trendy upscale places or the budget sushi places or the one with asian fusion flair. Blue Ocean fits along the lines of trendy upscale that is similar to Blue Fish. Our server was great and made recommendations for us. We ended up ordering the Killer Roll, Spicy Salmon, and Cajun. According to my friend, the Cajun came out really different from what he was used to. Nevertheless, we both loved it. The place wasn't too loud and the lighting was dim, but enough to not kill yourself tripping over anything. The ambiance was good. The best part about this place was the sushi was never sloppy. The fish was so fresh I'm sure they jumped out of the water and hopped right onto the bamboo cutting boards for the master sushi chefs. So with the combination of good service and superb taste, it receives 5 stars from me! read more

This place is great! I've been a customer for a good 2 years. The only complaint is the service sometimes. All the years that I've been going, they are always short staffed. The owners wait tables and the lady owner doesn't seem like a people person. The sushi is fantastic! My favorites are the Mt. Fuji roll (not on the menu) THAI iced tea (not to be confused with Chai tea) and the fried bananas with honey. Great quality seafood. Full bar. I used to work on the adjacent corner and would walk to Blue Ocean for lunch occasionally. Something kept me coming back, but it probably wasn't the service. I've noticed the service is better for lunch than dinner. I will say that they have REALLY nice hot green tea! It's probably the best I've had at a restaurant, probably because they infuse it with orange and serve it with a fresh slice. And... they have a full bar! Their lunch bento box is usually pretty good. Other than that, they have pretty decent miso soup, great edamame, tasty seaweed salad, and a wide variety of fish for sushi and shashimi cuts. The spinach roll and the jalapeno roll are probably my favorites of the veggie rolls. I highly recommend trying the Atlantic Salmon Special, the Black and White roll, Tuna Tataki, Wasabi roll and the Panic roll. The Lone Star roll is also pretty good, but how couldn't it be with a name like that? They also have the Vietnamese style vermicelli bowls, and they are amazing! I don't think their menu says this, but IF YOU ASK, THEY WILL MAKE ALMOST ANY DISH VEGETARIAN :) Pretty sweet! read more

We've been coming here for over ten years, and have watched it develop and morph into what it is today--EXCELLENT! Don't be fooled by its strip-mall exterior. Walking through the doors instantly transports you to a trendy restaurant you'd be proud to treat a client, a date, or even yourself. A full, top-shelf bar, nice wine selection, and now a hibachi! The ambiance is just one of the reasons you'll love it here. We love the sushi and sashimi made by very skilled chefs. The basic California roll is even a step up from most other restaurants' offerings. I always make it a point to enjoy the spicy rolls, as well as fresh yellowtail, tuna, octopus, and salmon sushi. Came here on a Friday night after a long discussion with our realtor. We put in an offer in a house and decided to celebrate and enjoy a hibachi meal here. We got here at 8:30. They do allow reservations but we just took a table. There wasn't really a wait. AMBIANCE: It was quite packed though. It seemed like a lively crowd. As you enter there's a sushi side and then there's a bar and then there's the hibachi side. The restaurant is very nicely decorated its very flashy. Everything from the poles to the tiles on the wall are shimery or shiny. It seemed very trendy clubby. Regardless i like the decor. It's very nice. The bathrooms are pretty clean and well kept up too. They're just in a strange spot. They have these curtains covering the bathroom. In which i was afraid to touch because i'm semi-germaphobic. SIDESTORY: We were seated rather quickly and sat at the table with 2 other couples and a lady with long hair in a pony tail wearing a Dallas Police tshirt. She was an interesting character. We put in an order and asumed she was with the older and more plump couple as they were talking. Ten minutes later we just heard that she told them they were boring and stormed off to the bar. It was the most bizarre thing. When the waitress came she had mentioned to the table that she apologized and she's a regular here and she tends to do that. She said she's been here for two hours drinking by herself. Yep bizarre. So look out for this lady. FOOD: The chef came and did his silly knife and flipper tricks. I was starving so IDGAF. I wanted him to hurry up and cook our food lol. She ordered the combination Filet and lobster and I ordered the Filet and scallops. Both cost about 30 per person. Not sure what these cheapasses are complaining about. Albeit, the chicken is overpriced; i would just opt for 5 bucks more and you get the good stuff. Seriously this isn't Rachel Ray's 40 dollars a day. Anyways, every entree came with soup and salad so you really don't need to order an appetizer unless you're with a group of people. Both the soup and salad were pretty tasty. The soup wasn't the cheap broth you get from a powder packet. It has what seems to be a bunch of crispy rice put into the soup and it had thin sliced mushrooms topped on top. The flavor of the broth was really tasty. It was very clean tasting broth. Probably chicken. The salad was alright it looked like the organic salad box you get at Costco. Regardless an upgrade from the kraft pretossed salad. The dressing was a bit bad but i didn't care i plowed through it since i was starving. Every entree also comes with a side of vegetables. They were a bit overcooked (i'll discuss our chef in a bit) but well seasoned. My scallops were the saddest most thin scallops I've ever seen. They probably took a beautiful 2 inch thick 3 inch round scallop into several 1/4 inch scallops. I guess you have to cut food costs somewhere. If you can remember to sit at the right side of the grill. You get served first. This could mean if you're a hungry guy like me you get more food. In which i did sometimes. We got our filet and we both agreed it needed more seasoning. The lobster though was amazing. They put some kind of butter sauce in the lobster to make it taste awesome. The scallops were very tasty and with the touch of lime it didn't have too much of that fishy taste. SERVICE: Service was alright. The cook was a bit of a pyro. He threw on a bunch of oil and started a huge fire. Everything tasted a little burnt canola oil at the beginning when he cooked the fried rice. He seemed to have overcooked the vegetables a little too. And also, we're lucky we have no food allergies; because he cross contaminated and cooked the beef, the vegetables, the lobster tail and scallops all together. OVERALL: Overall, this is probably the best independant hibachi place that i've been around the area. The food was pretty tasty and it was of good quality. We have yet to try the sushi. I would like to try that next time. And as for a tip: Be sure to check groupon.com we found a 15 for 30 groupon for this place. Made our total bill around 45 bucks sans tip. I love sushi. When I saw their sign for 2 for 1 sushi at lunch, I was down. The place is very nice inside, standard sushi bar setting. The hostess/waitress was okay, not overly friendly but passable. The 2 for 1 only applies to Nigiri, not to rolls. I didn't care, but I know a lot of people think of sushi as California rolls, so I thought you should know. Instead of getting 2 pieces of Nigiri, you get 4. So, we tried the Blue Fin tuna, Unagi (my fave), Ikura (salmon roe), Squid, and the seared tuna. They were all very good, except maybe the squid, though I am not a huge squid fan. The Unagi was awesome! So far so good, but it gets better. We saw a table have a small tower of food get mashed together next to their table. Picture table-side guacamole at a Mexican restaurant. We ask and it is a "Tuna Tower". Basically, it is a 4 story tower with layers of Tuna, Crab, Rice, and Avocado...topped with a bit of caviar. Well, we had to try it. The "Tuna Tower" is superb. The flavor is awesome, a big hash of fresh ingredients. It's a bit pricey at $16.95, but everyone loved it and it will be a "must" every time I go back. Overall, great restaurant. The service is kind of snobby, but good food cures most woes. Definitely go M-W at lunch time to get their 2 for 1 special if you like Nigiri. read more

I'm not sure where the bad reviews came from but I had a terrific dinner here. It's a pretty big place for a strip mall kind of place and the layout is good. They have a formal sushi bar, big central bar and a whole area for teppan. If you like American style sushi rolls, they have a really eclectic assortment of different combinations and the two I tried were excellent. The yellowtail, which I rate every sushi bar on, was perfect. The spicy tuna hand roll was like a big snowcone of crack. Good miso soup, good Goya dumplings....everything was excellent. Yeah sorry rich white folks this ain't it! Came here for new years eve with my bro and sis inlaw and we were greeted with "You have a reservation? Cause the the hibachi tables are full...." NOT!!! It was after all two for one sushi tonight according to the menu and website. Another couple was sat with us and they order sushi as an appetizer. The usual soup and salad comes out. Out comes the hibachi dude,chef whatever you want to call him ten mins later. It was probably one of the most lack luster cooking performance I've seen. The food at Benihana's might suck, but at least they put on a show. Everyone at our table seems to agree. Everyone got heir food except the wife, she didn't get her white rice and I'm still missing my sushi. Finally while the others are almost done the waiter comes out and tells me "I'm sorry we are really busy tonight the sushi will be right out" I'm thinking to myself man there is over a billion of you guys and over two billion of my kind ( I'm half Chinese, half Indian btw), you couldn't get a few more imported? I mean shit everything else comes from china these days. Finally my sushi came out. The cucumber roll was the size of a nickel roll cut into six pieces. Fell immediately appart because the rice was warm. The unagi was just right and the tuna smelled really fishy and tasted old. Of course I didn't get double the pieces as advertised. When I asked the waiter about it I got a shrug and a get the frakk out of here look. As you can tell I had a great experience. For real sushi lovers avoid this place, for hibachi lovers avoid this place. For everyone else that likes to be seen in cool places, put on your fancy clothes and keep on shoveling this stuff down your throat you keep calling great food.
