I wanted to try something new for sushi so I met a friend at Blue Ocean on a Thursday evening around 7:30. Be prepared to circle around a dozen times or park at the car repair shop next door! This placed was packed full. Parking is scarce! Upon entry I was greeted right away. The entry area is small and nowhere to sit if waiting on someone. Your option is the bar. Once my friend arrived they asked if we wanted table or hibachi. Immediate seating for hibachi, waiting list for table. We opted to wait. That wait lasted about 30 seconds. Lol. Got a cute little table by the window. It was pretty noisy as it was so crowded. Tables were pretty close together. If I was inclined to do so i probably could have read the screens of the neighboring tables phones. Cool menus with awesome drink descriptions. I opted for wine, my friend a mixed drink. These drinks didn't come until well after our food was delivered which was very annoying. The waitress blamed it on the bartender. Great selection of vegetarian rolls. My friend had never tried sushi (crazy right?) so i picked the jalapeño roll for her which was deep fried with cream cheese. She loved it! I chose the black shiitake roll which I had never seen and it was amazing. New fav. We also got an asparagus roll to share, nothing special, very bland actually compared to ones I've had. Seaweed salad was as expected, hard to screw up but I'm sure some restaurants manage to. We stayed at our table until closing (10:00) and by that time it was way less noisy so easier to converse. I didn't get a peek at the bill since my friend paid but everything seemed reasonable. I'll probably go back at some point but it's 45 minutes from me, so not anytime soon. read more

Mega Delish! Even the raw stuff! lol I had a Bento Box lunch special one day - lots of food, very yummy - I was forced to take a very long nap afterwards. Another time I had the lemongrass chicken. It was crazy good! Very spicy - I started sweating, but in a good way. Plus, enough for dinner. Oh, and I had an Sweet Dream roll too. Now this was no chinsy 6 piece roll.. this was like turbo 20 piece roll (ok, slight exaggeration, but Im pretty sure it was a foot long.. and not $5). Good sushi, fantastic service. Even though the fiance and I dropped in on an extremely busy night during the holiday week, our server John made sure we didn't get lonely. Our refills came promptly, and our food served the way we liked it. He made the recommendation to have our edamame served sichuan spicy style...and it was addicting! After licking our fingers clean, we partook of some tempura shrimp. We received 5 prawns, and while I was happy with the amount served us, I found the batter too heavy. With appetizers out of the way, we proceeded to devour our sushi dinner. While I found the nigiri mackerel merely okay (too much marinade made the strong-flavored fish too mild), the rolls that followed mostly exceeded expectations. The Hurricane roll is the salmon version of a Volcano roll, and it was the tastiest of our selections--served hot, it was perfect for a cold winter evening. The Coppell roll was the oddball choice, since it was shaved beef rolled around mushroom drizzled with a dark sweet sauce--different but memorable. Only the Desperado roll seemed to border the mundane, registering on our tastebuds simply for being medium spicy. Did I mention the excellent service? Friendly and cheery, our server John was quick on the refills and made regular check ins, despite the busy holiday rush. (Perhaps they should keep their holiday staff hired on throughout the rest of the year?) We both found the dining room nicely decorated and quite cozy. The bar area takes up about a 3rd of the space, and it seems Blue Ocean isn't shy about their wine collection--judging by the small bank of bottles in the corner. The obligatory glass waterfall adorns the front door and a fish tank housing some nice looking specimens sits in an opposite corner of the room. The place is casual enough for lunch yet fancy enough for dinner dates and special occasions--though I think they'd do better without the techno music vibe. We promised John we'd be back to sample more of the menu--which appears to have many selections inspired by Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese cooking. read more

I frequently travel to Dallas, TX and the surrounding Coppell area for business and until last week I lacked a positive seafood experience. The sushi here was very fresh and the "taste" of the fish/seafood was flavorful and without after taste. I thought until last week I'd need to only eat beef or chicken in Texas but now I have a good spot. Try the Chef's Special Sushi Rolls Dine at the bar - the people watching and ambiance is better from the bar than being seated. Personal opinion. One of my top two favorite sushi spots in the area! I can't believe I've waited til now to post a review. I've been going here for at least five years for awesome, fresh sushi and rolls. Never disappointed. My brother and his wife are regulars here and I believe they first introduced us, so we go here frequently. Great atmosphere, especially for date night or a girls night out. Gorgeous decor. Techno music at night. Trendy spot. Always packed. Great for lunch too. They've recently redecorated and added a hibachi side, which hubby and I tried once and really liked. Huge portions. As I said, this is a FAVORITE! Great sushi, hibachi, and drinks too! They have some of our favorite Napa wines- great wine and drink selection. Blue Ocean is my favorite sushi place in the Dallas metroplex area. I took my boyfreind and his parents here for dinner and we had such a great time. We sat at the bar since we all wanted to watch football. Peter, the bartender was very friendly and we got our drinks promptly. We decided to be adventurous and just order off the menu. We told Peter to keep the good food coming. So if you want to try something different....just let Peter and Kimberly make recommendations. You will discover there is more to sushi! First of all, they don't use real crab, only imitation crab. If you're going to spend that much for sushi, I think it's fair they should at least use real crab...but they don't. Aside from having a bro waiter who acted annoyed when we asked what the house wine was, I discovered later that they charged my card for a dollar more for the tip than I indicated on the receipt. Undoubtedly some of the best sushi in the DFW area. When asked why they were closed on Sundays the owner replied "because fish markets are closed on Sunday" thus implying they only serve when fish is fresh. I went to Blue Ocean for lunch since they've been pretty well rated on Yelp. I love sushi and Japanese food, so I'm always excited to try a new place. Upon entering, we were given the choice between sushi bar and a table. There was also a sign on the door that there was a hibachi coming soon. We decided on a table. The ambiance was decent, but they should really do something with the ceiling so you can't see the spray on insulation. The menu had a mixture of Japanese, Thai, and Chinese foods. The lunch specials consisted of a choice of sushi bento boxes and lunch entrees. Unfortunately, they didn't have any tonkatsu on the menu. It's one of my favorite Japanese dishes. Instead, my wife and I ordered agedashi tofu for an appetizer, tuna rolls, lemongrass chicken, and black bean chicken. The first dish brought out were the tuna rolls. The color on the tuna was off. We tried some anyway and there was a distinct flavor of turning fish. I don't really understand why. Most restaurants buy frozen sushi grade tuna. It shouldn't ever start to turn unless they've defrosted it and refrigerated it for too long. Next came the agedashi tofu. It was covered with scallions and jalepenos. Now, I understand I'm in Texas and people will put jalepenos on anything, but it just doesn't go well with agedashi tofu. The tofu lost a ton of crispiness from the moisture in the jalepenos. What was left was a mushy mess that was difficult to pick up with chopsticks. Also, the sauce had little if any dashi flavor. It's not agedashi tofu if there's no dashi! The entrees were plain. My wife liked the rice that was shaped into a fish, but I found it a little corny. The lemongrass chicken was hard and became overwhelming after a few bites. The black bean chicken (standard fare at any Chinese restaurant) could best be described as salt chicken. The steamed vegetables that accompanied both dishes were bland and mushy. Service-wise, there were issues. The waitress we had was cold and disinterested. The pacing of the meal was all wrong. The rolls came two minutes before the appetizer and the entrees came four to five minutes after that. There wasn't sufficient time to eat each dish before the next one came out. This may have been because there were only 4 tables filled, but what we were left with was a cluttered table and a diminished dining experience. Usually, I'll give restaurants a second chance if the first experience was negative. However, I don't really see this place getting much better so I think I'll pass. read more

I generally don't care much about service. Oh, I'll tip a bit higher if the staff is friendly and informative. But, typically, I'm there for the food, and if the staff isn't top notch, I barely notice. I noticed, here. Our waitress was decent enough. She refilled our glasses in a timely manner, etc. The floor manager, however, went beyond brusque and descended to all the way to rude. First, she was very peremptory about seating us. Later, she didn't even hide her exasperation when we weren't ready to order, immediately. But the coup de grace occurred when the waitress brought out the wrong sushi roll for me. The first problem: I'd ordered two rolls, and only one was delivered initially. It didn't look quite right, but I wasn't sure, so I had seized the first piece. She whisked in, informed me angrily that the roll wasn't intended for me, insisted that I put the piece of sushi I had between my chopsticks down, and took the plate away. (Did she attempt to reserve this?!?!). I heard her berate the waitress for delivering the roll to the wrong table. After a few minutes, the waitress returned with one of the correct rolls. The other was not delivered until the first roll was long gone and my spouse had also finished eating. The floor manager then asked my spouse if she would like it packaged. My spouse responded that she would. However, while the server took the plate, she came back with both the plate and a box. I don't mind it when restaurants don't box up my food--but to say you will, take the plate, and then bring back both the plate and the box for the customer to package it--well, that's just strange. The food was good. The fish was fresh, the rolls were well executed and seasoned properly. There was good variety on the menu. My spouse was happy with her chicken dish. I will, however, be looking for other area sushi restaurants with staff that show some minimal respect for their customers. read more

Very unassuming on the outside, in a strip next to a 7-11. Inside is really nice and the ambiance gets better the later it gets. We arrived at 6pm, left at 8pm. Surprisingly busy on a Tuesday night considering they do NOT have a happy hour. Food and experience were okay. Not Benihana; slightly different. They do extra to entertain the kids but get right to business (with a little fancy flipping of utensils) for the adults. The flavor of the fried rice was very typical of a chinese restaurant, good, but familiar. Salad was decent (although I wish I had a knife to cut the large leaves), and the soup was decent as well. I got the filet and shrimp combo. The chef cooked the filet medium as requested. The meat is tossed with a sauce and some garlic/herb butter. Typically I'm a purist with my steak (butter always being okay), but I like to try things the first time as the chef intended. It was good. Actually, I was pleasantly surprised. Shrimp were tasty with both the lemon and the butter being noticeable in every bite. Steamed veggies were good also. Now, the bill is another story. First, we got another table's bill; no worries, it happens from time to time. Second, gratuity was added and there were only two of us (yes, only 2 at our hibachi grill)! Third, the Groupon we used caused confusion with one bill, so we requested it be split, and indicated exactly what should be charged on each ticket. This was not done right either. *sigh* My advice? Always ask for separate checks. TRUST ME! And beware of automatic gratuity!!! read more

Not the place to go if you want to support small business while social distancing during a global pandemic. I went in March before the ban was lifted, the bar was completely packed and being served while floor staff were not wearing gloves or masks serving patrons. Owners did nothing when drunk patrons started harassing and threatening me for wearing a mask. Came in today with my bf. Only came here because it was near Costco and I yelped a few places in the are and this place had the best reviews. The place was pretty busy for a weekday. We were seated promptly. What we ordered was yellowtail in ponzu, pork spring rolls and beef tataki. I could have lived with out the pork rolls. The yellow tail I will say was my favorite because it was smothered in chopped cilantro. I gave it a kick by asking for sliced jalepenos and siracha and it was over the top. The beef tataki was excellent also The sauce was a little on the sweet side but the beef itself was so tender and delicious. Will go there again! The service was pretty good there's nothing I would complain about. He did drop the warm towel on the floor and said he would bring a new one but never did but it was ok I didn't need one Anyways. Blue Ocean has consistently great sushi. The variety is pretty extensive and they have lots of specialty rolls that are great. Beef Tataki is a favorite but you need someone to share it, too much for one. A couple of other great dishes are the "Shaken" Beef and the Shrimp Tempura. Some specialty rolls I particularly like are the Volcano Roll and the Firecracker Roll. What kept them from getting 5 stars is that the service is occasionally slow. Don't go in a hurry, breath and relax and you'll enjoy your experience. read more

Kim is the owner and she is the sweetest lady and always knows us by name. the food here is also incredible! if you want a nice sushi roll it is going to be expensive. between $8-18. but honestly who wants cheap sushi. little risky... I ALWAYS get the (bun thit nuong). trust me when saying it is the best creation god had put on this earth. it had pork in it and it is on top of noddles with lots of stuff in it. and I also ALWAYS get the ahi tower. there's is the best than any other places hands down.(trust me when saying I am a hugeeee sushi fan) and I ALWAYS get the spider roll. I love fried tempura and it just overall very well made. I have been to this restaurant three time and will continue to return. First of all, if you get there early on an evening, there are no crowds and the service is fast and attentive. Second, the drinks are always good, with a great list of Japanese beer. Third, the food is great. The menu is a combo of sushi, seafood, Thai and Vietnamese. I have always had great meals with sushi and sashmi, and my fellow diners have enjoyed the bun and Pad Thai. Excellent spring rolls and egg rolls and wonderful dishes like Blue Snapper. A safe bet is always the Spicy Tuna Roll, where you get 10 pretty large pieces. You are always safe to order any of the tuna, salmon, snapper or eel. The tuna tower is amazing but I was disappointed by the Tuna Poke on the appetizer menu. Each time I have been there, I have had excellent service and drinks were prepared very well. Prices were average for a sushi menu, which many diners are shocked from. Keep in mind that sushi IS expensive, which is not unusual. The restaurant is on a corner in a very unusual spot. Look for the 7/11 and you have found Blue Ocean at the Freeway and MacArthur. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more
