If you like sours and a relaxing atmosphere, Blue Owl is the spot for you. I recently planned a tour here as part of a bachelor party and the Blue Owl team was fantastic! Communication was great and the head brewer, Jeff, made sure our group had a great time. He was extremely knowledgeable and we couldn't seem to stump him, no matter how technical we got with our questions. We tried pretty much everything on the menu and couldn't find a beer we did not like. The sour double IPA, which happened to be blue, was a bit intimidating at first, but had a great flavor to it. Cool & the Gang was another crowd favorite. Blue Owl hit the nail on the head for us sour beer nerds. The only reason I am giving this place any stars is because the beers were exceptional (especially if you love sours). However, the service here was trash and the lady with the tattoos and colored hair working behind the counter was insanely rude. My friend and I decided to visit this brewery on Christmas Eve since it was one of the few spots opened till late that day in the city. Once we arrived, we noticed a few other guys at the brewery. We asked the lady at the counter if it was okay where we parked, as we did not want our car to get towed or ticketed, however she made us feel incompetent about not knowing for sure where to park. We are from out of town and simply wanted to confirm. I also had asked her between a few options which beer she recommends, and she gave me a disgruntled look and said she likes all the beers there. Very helpful... My friend and I placed another order for a beer and charcuterie board after our first round of beers. The lady seemed really angry at us for placing another order. Not sure why. I did not think there was a limit to how much we can order, especially given we had only placed one beer order each the first round. The brewery wasn't even busy. By the time we placed the second order, there were only 2 guys at the brewery, who she seemed to be a lot kinder/friendlier to and laughing along with. My friend and I were sitting outside, but whenever we came inside, the lady seemed to have an attitude and did not answer our questions/made us feel unwelcome. My friend took her second beer order to the outside seating area, and as I was about to bring my beer order and charcuterie board out, the waitress rudely said "Merry Christmas," outright rolled her eyes at me, and ran to close the outside patio door where I was about to head out from with my beer and food. So, I had to use the other door to exit. Such a weird turn of events. Even my friend who was outside was wondering why the lady quickly ran to the door to close it as I was trying to head out through there. It was so odd, and I truly did not understand the hostility the lady had towards my friend and I. It seemed like the lady did not want us to return inside (probably because she was too busy talking to those 2 guys at the counter, and did not want us "interrupting"). Really not sure what she had against us. Also, the charcuterie board she made us barely had any cheese in it, and she skimped on the other items on the board as well. She really had it out for us for no reason. I guess the lady was angry about working a shift on Christmas Eve... I don't know, but that is not an excuse. We did not feel welcomed at the brewery, and the lady really made us feel like she was obliging us. We were being nothing but kind and respectful and were really excited to visit this brewery as we love sour beers. A paradise for sour beer lovers! I went to Austin in 2019 and came to this brewery and when we were planning a return trip in 2022 I knew I HAD to come back to blue owl. Instead of flights you can purchase a glass and get 4 FULL POURS for $22. Plus I get to keep a glass from an awesome brewery as long as it survives the plane ride home. I tell everyone about checking out this place when they visit the city. Love that they scale the tartness levels of all the beers too so even if someone is iffy on sours, they can find the less tart options to enjoy! read more

Just absolutely phenomenal beers! Was my first time having some sours and it was definitely on of the best experiences I've had at a brewery. The interior is decorated quite nicely and you have a window right into their distillery in the back. There's some outside seating on some cushions with doggie bowls if you want to bring your dog. The beers are phenomenal! Its $15 for the classic sized glass and 4 pours. All the specialty rotating ones I had were A1. Super tasty and nothing really overpowering. Blue Owl has some of my all time favorite brews - in my opinion there's nothing as drinkable and enjoyable as a sour beer on a hot Austin day. I've had Blue Owl cans at bars all over Austin and buy them at the grocery store fairly regularly, but I wanted to check them out at the source. I came here on a Saturday night with a bunch of friends - I'd call the atmosphere understated but pleasant. Reasonably small outdoor and indoor seating areas with stools and tables but not much else to report, but that's OK, the focus is on the drinks. The way it works is you'll buy a drinking glass or cup that's yours to keep, and get a set number of refills depending on your selection. I'd imagine most folks interested in a tasting will opt for the 4 refills for around $20 - the glass at this price point is not quite a pint but close enough. Unfortunately, the option for a single beer is close to $10, so this isn't really a spot to enjoy a casual drink. It also makes it harder to recommend returning here regularly. That being said, the beers I tried from the tap were excellent. The folks pouring our beers were super friendly, and didn't mind the crowd and a bit of noise we brought with us. If you're a fan of sours and looking for a pleasant way to spend a couple hours, check this spot out - I have no doubt these beers are about to blow up around the country. read more

I think we got there at the right time because we were able to secure a seat inside where it was considerably cooler than the outside seating. The main draws are that its in a cool neighborhood, i like that the beers are highly alcoholic. Also their patio is dece, but it could use more seating. The big gimmick, which I find annoying, aside from the sour beers buying a glass when you to get a drink. When you buy one, you're basically comitting to four 12 oz. pours and possibly coming back in the future. There are other sizes, but the 12 oz. Is the best value and it feels weird drinking beer from a shot glass. You can bring a glass you already bought, but overall its annoying to bring a pint glass to a bar. They brew the sours with other beer varieties that some may enjoy more--hefeweizen, lager, IPA, you name it, they make it. It's called sour-mashing here at Blue Owl. I KNOW. I was drawn to their extensive menu and had the opportunity to try two that night. I love hefes, so went with the Litte Boss, which was a session wheat sour. VERY crisp and refreshing, almost like a lager, and exactly the perfect start to my beer tasting here. The great thing is, ALL beer drinkers knowledgeable or novice, can figure it out. Their menu has a timeline that tells you what is lighter on the palette, and what might be harsher. Their Little Boss was on the clean/light side, so I knew that would be a great starter...and it was! I also chose the Hop Totem because it was an IPA sour, and it didn't actually have as bitter hops as I thought it would. It was not as bitter, but the sour taste came out more for me...so I preferred their Little Boss more. We stood at their standing tables, as all the other tables were full. It was a weeknight - and it took me 20 minutes to find a place to park on a side street. I walk in the Brewery - and there are 2 other people there. So, not sure what was going on parking-wise. Unfortunately, for reasons I don't quite understand, even after they attempted to explain it - one cannot order a tasting flight of beer. Something about the type of liquor license they have. It made no sense to me. All other craft breweries are serving tasting flights - and you can't. So one pays $14.00 for a "glass" and then they fill that. You get to take the glass home with you. Problem was - I wanted to taste everything and was driving - I was definitely not going to drink a full glass of each beer and then drive. I'd be snockered! So I paid the $14.00 and asked them to only fill the glass about one third of the way up - that way I could taste everything. I tasted the following Sours: Professor Black Cherry Stout (6.1% ABV) (3.75 stars on Untappd) Hop Totem IPA (6.7% ABV) (4.25 stars on Untappd) Admiral Gravitas Imperial Stout (9.0% ABV) (4.25 stars on Untappd) Van Dayum (6.1% ABV) (4 stars on Untappd) Wee Beastie Wee Heavy (8.0% ABV) (5 stars on Untappd) I enjoyed everything I tried! A brewery that does only sours! I was so happy to find this place while exploring East Austin. You know, it's been a while since I walked around a neighborhood without my phone constantly telling me where to go. This time I did, and Cesar Chavez led me here and to so many other amazing spots! You walk in, order a glass that you get to keep! And then you get 4 beers in that glass! The best part? If you are like me and get the cool goblet at 16 oz. you can't drink that much beer at once. You can keep your tasting card and come back for the other 1 or 2 that you maybe couldn't do at visit #1! I think the limit is about a month between visits, but I'm not sure. Honestly, we came here 3 times. One time we didn't have our tasting cards so just did 4 tasting size glasses. Yes, we are big fans and came back to Indy with 4 glasses! For $16, my friends and I each got a normal sized glass to take home and 4 pours of any choice (you can do 8 half pours). There are also different types and sizes for glasses, so you could opt for a bigger or smaller glas. Beer/Sours: Great quality drinks with a wide range of flavors. We loved coming to Blue Owl Brewing!! When we came, they only had the patio open for drinking at the brewery due to COVID, which was nice and very comfortable. We ordered a glass and got 4 beers with the glass, if you are not able to finish your 4 beers, they will let you take the extras to go in cans! I believe the size we got was $20 per person. They had about 3 different options for sizes of glasses. The girl said we could even share one order if we wanted less beers per person. I love all the options of the beers (they are all "sour" and DELICIOUS)!! My all time favorite that I tried was the Jubilberry! A truly unique brewery, Blue Owl specializes in sour beers. I'm not a huge fan of sours but found myself liking the offering more than I thought I would. It's a worthwhile stop on the grand brewery tour that is Austin. The long and short of it: 1. Beer. Sours. Sours of all kinds. Less sour sours. More sour sours. IPA sours. Fruity sours. While they specialize in 1 specific kind of beer, each one I tasted had its own distinct flavor, and each was different from any sour I had ever had before. I'd recommend Blue Owl even if sours aren't your jam, just because the beer is so unique. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy this style. 2. Tasting. Different from most beer tastings we did, instead of selecting a beer or two, you select a glass size. They then offer you 4 pours of your choice in that glass, and mark it off on your scorecard. A bit different, and we enjoyed it. 3. Price. $12 for a half pint, $15 for a full pint and 4 pours. That's a pretty damn good deal. It also allows you to mix and match your beers to try the ones you want. 4. Atmosphere. A pretty standard brewery atmosphere. You can chill at the bar or head to where the brew tanks are so you can drink your beer surrounded by more beer. Nothing special, but a nice place to grab a brew. I didn't fall in love with any of the beers I had at Blue Owl, and probably wouldn't order any in a bar. But that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy visiting the brewery or the beers I had. Cutest brewery in Austin. They currently have four sour mash beers on tap. I'm not the biggest fan of sours, but I really enjoyed the Sour Pale Ale and the Sour Session. (I'm also not a fan of stouts, so the Sour Cherry Stout was not my favorite). The brewery itself is right on the other side of the glass in the tap room. The tap room is cute. Lots of seating and tables. Blue owls everywhere. Little terrariums on the tables. Even the bathrooms were cute. Seriously. They sell great merchandise as well - I really wanted one of their shirts! The staff is great - very helpful, very nice! Heads up: I don't think they have a license to sell liquor, so they can't just sell you a beer. All they can sell is a glass (which - surprise, surprise) is totally cute and then you can try all four beers once in your glass! All in all, a really great brewery experience! I really enjoy Blue Owl. Their beers are all sours so it's not for everyone, but I dig it. $15 gets you 4 generous pours and you keep their adorable glass. They give you a piece of paper and mark off the beer you choose until you've exhausted your 4 pours. I actually find that's perfect for sharing with 1-2 other people if you've already been drinking elsewhere (such as Hops & Grain, which is walking distance). As far as I know, they don't have any other options if you're just looking for a single pour. There are 4 mainstays and 4 seasonals the last time I was there, so you've got some decisions to make on which 4 you go with, but I'm not sure how frequently the taps change. The decor is also great. Blue owls adorn the entrance, of course. I'm also a sucker for the cute little succulents on the tables. There is water available near the entrance if you need to rehydrate. Buyer Beware!! You don't get to have a choice in whether or not to buy a souvenir beverage receptacle :( Unfortunately, Blue Owl Brewing doesn't sell beer. It sells cups and glasses, which come with beer in them. I paid $9 for a cheap blue plastic souvenir cup in order to get one beer. I was traveling to Austin by airplane (during the weekend of the TSA meltdown at the airport) and don't have room to carry around a cheap plastic cup, much less a glass. If you think you might want to drink two beers you have to upgrade to buying a glass for $22, which then entitles you to two beers, at $11 each. One of which comes in the mandatory souvenir glass -whether you want it or not- and the other in an even cheaper clear plastic cup. If you want to share four beers with friends you have to buy the largest glass for $32 (I may be off slightly regarding the price) and they will give you a souvenir glass and three, even cheaper, plastic disposable cups. You can also choose to refill the same glass four times. In any case this will cost you $8 per beer which is the cheapest options if you're looking for volume. Please note, you are not allowed to bring your own reusable glass/mug/plastic cup and buy the beer. Because, this place sells cups and glasses. Not beer. The beer is a byproduct of buying a glass. From an environmental perspective, this is not a responsible business model. Stop selling plastic cups and start selling beer. Get a dishwasher so you a can re-use your glass inventory. When you go to a brewery it's usually because you want beer. Not a glass. If you do want a glass you can pick one up at the gift shop. Honestly, my friend and I should have walked out after learning of the cup-buying scheme, but we had just walked two miles to get there, and watching the confusion spread over the faces of thirsty consumers who came in after us was priceless. Locals with B.O.B. growlers didn't seem to mind. I have no idea what a growler would cost, or how many,even cheaper, plastic cups it comes with. We won't be going back unless they start selling beer instead of glasses. The business model didn't sit well with either of us. Granted this is a subjective observation. One star for the server as she was polite and seemed a little exasperated in explaining the business model. One star for the beer, they have some good flavors here. And one more for the atmosphere as it had a nice vibe. Seriously, this is not your Bud crowd (yay!) and the people there are serious about making stand out and unique beer. Sour sour sour. I love sour beer. This place does it for me and more! Unlike other breweries, this place is really small. It is practically a bunch of small tables and some outdoor seating, so keep that in mind if you're going to meet a bunch of friends. When my friends and I arrived we were greeted and explained their ordering process. Essentially you order a glass ranging in three different sizes. Then you get to fill your cup 4 times, whether to try different beers or stick with your favorite one. It is quite simple, affordable, and awesome. Little Boss - My least favorite but still good! It was a bit too light for me and the least sour of the bunch Spirit Animal - My favorite out of the bunch. When we were walking over to this place from Lazarus brewing my wife said, "I think they only have sours". I was like no way, I will just grab an IPA or something... Oh man was I shocked to see that they literally only had sours. With that being said let me start this shockingly high review for a place that only has sours by saying... i do not care for sour beers. So a 5 star coming from a person who doesnt enjoy sours should say something. I loved everything about this place. This place is in a cool location, has a great logo, has great aesthetic, and a really cool flight idea. If it wasnt all sour beers... I would live at this place. Let me explain how the flights work here. You pick your glass size... If I were to guess I would say 4oz, 8oz, 12oz... but honestly that is a guess. Then you get 4 samples in that size. You bring up your sheet, they check off the beer and you sample it. Oh and the best part is that after you are done you get to keep the glass. Oh and the prices are not crazy. I want to say it was $6, $8, $10, but that might also be off. This is definitely one of the coolest strategies I have seen for flights at a brewery ever... Oh and the glasses all looked really neat for sure. Now onto the beer. Like I have mentioned multiple times already, I am not a fan of sours, but I liked the initial flavor of most of these beers. We had the wee heavy, the red, the earl grey one (lazarus colab), and the cherry stout. Everything had a great crafted flavor, until I hit the sour note. I relied on my wife to drink most of these, but I was very impressed by everything for sure. And my wife was happy with everything as well. I would suggest anyone in Austin come visit this place for sure. Definitely worth the trip and more so if you like sours!! read more
