I would have loved to review the food but we got up and left before we even ordered. I arrived around 10:10am on a Wednesday, and there was no one at the host stand. After a few minutes, I peeked around the corner and saw no servers on the floor. At nearly 10:20am, a server finally came to the front and apologized for not noticing anyone was waiting to be seated. Ok, fine. It happens. Plus my friend that was meeting me hadn't arrived yet. I had requested to sit outside but apparently there's a bee problem on their patio so they've halted outdoor seating. Instead, the server sat me at a booth, which was pretty cozy, but I noticed there were dirty dishes all over the restaurant, which wasn't super busy at the time. Not a great look. The menu looked pretty inviting, and I saw some fun looking coffee drinks on their Yelp page, so I was still hopeful at this point. Once my friend arrived, we intended to order some espresso, and the server then informed us that the only options they had were coffee & iced coffee, despite espresso and "Specialty Beverages" being listed on the menu. Frustrating, but not the end of the world; we expressed our disappointment and requested a minute to regroup. We decided to order food and go elsewhere to grab a coffee. Welp, the server walked by our table a number of additional times to haphazardly clear other tables, seat other guests, fail to notice us trying to get her attention, and then completely disappear. After waiting for almost ten minutes, we stood up, looked around and no servers were on the floor, while a number of unhappy guests waited at the host stand. It was as if the waitstaff had completely given up. If they are understaffed and overworked, I feel for them. However, this situation was absurd, and whoever owns this business really needs to work on the service and management, or this place won't survive in the current environment.

Went to Blue Plate Kitchen twice. We went early on a weekend and were seated very promptly-- the place is clean with typical diner vibes, no frills. I ordered the smoked salmon eggs Benedict both visits. The first time it was heavenly-- the latke was just the right thickness, well-seasoned and fried to perfection. The hollandaise sauce was the best I had ever had. But the second time around, the hollandaise was grainy and obviously split and the latke was extremely thick which I wouldn't mind if it wasn't doughy in the center somehow. My partner ordered the corned beef hash and enjoyed it, it was a good portion and had a nice brown on it. He also ordered the cheddar grits which were a skip-- extremely watery, small portion and if you order bacon on top (for a dollar surcharge) they put about 3-4 small crumbles. I wouldn't mind go here again but I had some inconsistency with the food, though when something was a hit it was good. Overall a positive experience and I would even try ordering the eggs benedict again to just have that amazing hollandaise again. This would be a nice place to get breakfast or some casual drinks and dinner with friends.

Corned beef Bene with gel eggs instead of a poached. Art of Hollandaise - Corned Beef

Inexplicably terrible. I've had more coherent dining experiences at gas stations. We use to be regulars. Food, service and drinks were excellent, but the new ownership is entirely committed to erasing all of the positive experiences long term patrons still desperately cling to as they begrudgingly give it "one more chance". The service moved with the urgency of a hungover sloth clocking in for community service. Drinks took 20 minutes, presumably because they were being sourced from a distant spring by mule. The food arrived an hour later looking like it had lost the will to live halfway through. My boyfriend's bagel was cold, but the salmon was hot -- a culinary paradox that suggests nobody in the kitchen has ever met before. My plate was blisteringly molten while the corned beef Bennie itself was fridge-temperature and aggressively lacquered in what can only be described as hollandaise-flavoured regret. The "corned beef" tasted like it had been shouted at rather than seasoned -- burnt, greasy, and sulking. While we were delicately negotiating which parts were safe to consume, a poor soul collecting a to-go order mentioned they'd already waited 30 minutes past pickup time, only to receive food that was ice cold and stale enough to qualify as archival material. A server whisked it away, returned two minutes later and proudly announced, "I microwaved it". Then they slapped down a check and fled before the customer could form a complete sentence. It's not so much a restaurant as it is a social experiment on how long people will sit in polite disbelief.

    Industrial look of interior

I've been to Blue Plate Kitchen several times and I'd say it's a 4-5 star place. However, it has been a while & the interior needs some sprucing & cleaning up. The industrial look of the restaurant is great, but get those floors fixed & cleaned! We were there mid morning on a Friday for breakfast. Not many customers, so why was service so slow? The servers were very nice; it just took a long time to get even a cup of coffee. Food was really good. I had scrambled eggs (I asked for them to be soft & they were). Grits were good too. My husband had the kitchen sink skillet. Very good except the potatoes. The pieces were huge. So - I'll come back in a while and see if I can rate 4 or 5 stars again.

Ambiance inside and out is inviting! And they welcome you with a complimentary bread pudding, that was spectacular! My food was delicious; I had the Vegetable Hash w 2 eggs and a potato latke on the side. My sister-in-law had the Turkey bacon, avocado, turkey bacon wrap and said it was just ok (she wouldn't order it again, and expected the wrap to be grilled). My mother ordered 2 eggs with whole wheat, lightly toasted and received burnt toast. The replacement toast arrived quickly though. The wait staff was very pleasant. A last complaint has to do with the napkins... all they had as a dispenser on each table. The napkins are approximately 8 x 6 inches & do not cover your lap.

Enjoyed a brunch at Blue Plate Kitchen with family. The wait staff was friendly and helpful in choosing what to order. Super casual and great for groups!

Don't bother me this ice water is outta this world.

Under new ownership and management the menu has changed and definitely not for the worst; just simpler and still very creatively comforting. We were able to sit outside on their private patio with our pup. Our server, Nicole, took great care of our pup and us. We enjoyed a couple of beverages and burgers. Mine BPK Classic burger super charge with a fried egg and crispy bacon and side of park fries. My wife Salmon burger with lettuce tomato and sauce with a side salad. Both plates nicely filling and no complaints, except our pup would not eat her French fry, Salmon an entirely different response. Please visit the BPK it is a nice causal lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch experience. Oh! I almost forgot, there's a special Family Catering option for takeout, call for more details.

This was a delicious brownie explosion cheesecake!

This is where my favorite friend and I go for breakfast or lunch--sit inside, sit outside, it's always comfortable. The most recent visit we were carrying on the tradition of a dear departed friend of having dessert first (because life is uncertain)--the brownie explosion cheesecake was REALLY delicious. Then we both had a bowl of tasty onion soup. Our server did not question our unconventional choices. Cheap and cheerful! I'm happy this place is closeby.

I tried to give this place twice to leave a good impression, but each time the food was mid and the service super slow regardless of restaurant capacity. Steak extremely overcooked, especially when the order was medium rare... don't offer steak if you can't cook one. Sauces were oily and split, generally lacking of any flavor besides salt. Only time i've ever sent food back and trust I didn't want a re-do. French toast was decent but the plate came covered in syrup and carelessly presented. On their busy days it's generally too loud to hear yourself think, tables are over crowded, service is beyond reasonably slow. Overpriced ihop food.

Mexican bowl with jalapeños. Plus the remains of a delicious blueberry pancake.

I walked into a very busy place. I had Laura as my waitress and she did vey well. As you know - I hate to read the menu I always like when I'm suggested what o try. I want something thy know us good. Ms Laura did a great job with a single blueberry pancake and a churizo Mexican bowl. Everything was hot and quick. I was very impressed with the staff. The girls were friendly, attentive and professional. I will go back.

Absolute crap. I got the corn beef hash and it was the worst - overly greasy and tough. If you can't make it get hormel.

Prices are reasonable but the food...the food is OVER THE TOP!!! I've been back 4-5 times since being introduced to it and I already have a fav - a sautéd shrimp bowl, hold the rice, double both the crack-n-cheese and sweet potatoes!!! The shrimp are HUGE & slathered in garlic butter! There's nothing wrong with the rice, but I'd rather fill-up on the crack (Mac) and sweets, both of which are OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! The service borders on brown sugar sweet, the food comes up fast so you're not kept waiting. Their food comes up in paper bowls with a clear plastic top so you can see exactly what you're getting while maintaining 75-85% recyclability!!! All in all, they've earned (& continue to earn) my highest marks. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!! One foot note: Because all their food is made fresh daily, when if something runs out, it's out for that day. So, if you want to have dinner and you're coming by 15 minutes before closing, you might want to call ahead and see if they're out of anything you're jones-ing for!!!

Food: 3.8/5 Service: 3.4/5…read moreAmbiance: 3.7/5 Value: 3.6/5 The Charles is a nice upscale restaurant on Main Street in Wethersfield which opened in 2020 and quickly made Connecticut magazine's list of best restaurants. It is inside an old house of some sort, so it has a charming ambiance. They have a small parking lot so the spaces are a bit tight. Then, although we were on time for our 8:15pm reservation, we found out that they didn't have a table for us on the main floor, which is bad because my parents have mobility issues and cannot climb stairs. They asked us if we would be ok waiting five or ten minutes. Sure, that was fine we said. The host was very reassuring and he let us know that the corner table near the fireplace was finishing up and he'd get it bussed promptly. So that was good. But after we sat down we experienced service issues. Many items were unavailable. No orrechiete. No crab cakes. No sirloin special. It was weird. We hadn't arrived that late, on a Saturday night, how could so many dishes be sold out/unavailable? We ended up going with the scotch egg $11 and butternut squash arancini balls $12 for appetizers, which were both great. The scotch egg was a decent size and came with a mini salad. The arancini balls were small, but the truffle gorgonzola fontina cheese filling was really nice. Entrees were not bad. My Berkshire pork chop cooked medium was tender enough and had decent flavor. My Dad's veal ribs over mac and cheese were really good. My Mom's wagyu burger was tasty and my sister's salad was satisfactory. However the cost of the additional protein to the salad seems high (Grilled Chicken +14 / Seared Salmon +16/ Grilled Shrimp +21 / Churrasco Steak +24). The drinks were well made, but took a while to get to us. The "Charles... In Charge!" with old forester bourbon, montenegro, spiced cherry bitters, luxardo $15 was a hit. My Dad enjoyed his $17 Manhattan made with Angel's Envy bourbon. My $11 FreeBird mocktail was refreshing. Yet, throughout the night we found it difficult to get our server's attention. All four dishes did not arrive simultaneously. We had to flag someone down for more silverware after the appetizers were cleared. Right at the end when we were ready to pay, she got tied up listening to a couple at a neighboring table tell her a story or something. This must have been quite a yarn because she was totally enrapt and oblivious to our needs. We started wondering whether our table was actually her responsibility or not. Finally she came by and we let her know we were done, no dessert or after dinner drinks, just the check and a few boxes for takeout please. This was a new restaurant that we hadn't tried before, and maybe I took a risk by booking it for my Dad's 89th birthday, which was supposed to be special. Our experience was okay, and maybe we'd go again in the future, but there were too many more ups and downs this evening than I would have liked for a special occasion. I am rounding up to four stars overall, even though on this particular evening I didn't think each individual component met that mark exactly.
