This rating is truly a 4.5 stars but I can only give 4, which is a world BETTER than my initial 2 star review here! I do love a good 180 turn around story and let us begin with my Waitress Kim. She is an outstanding part of this establishment. Her area had a good amount of people to take care of upon my arrival and I seen her zipping around and double backing to check on the food and customer satisfaction amidst running food to the tables. She was definitely on her A-Game!! Even my own experience with Kim was a good one, she is polite and friendly too. I went with the Kizl's Super Slam, which my tray was filled with hash browns, 2 fried eggs, white toast, 2 pieces of French toast and home fries. I added a side of kielbasa and also a side of extra crisp bacon. My bacon was cooked to perfection. Crispy with low sodium flavor. Had a hickory kick to it, could had been maple but I was so in the moment of the crispiness, that it didn't even matter. Even my kielbasa was cooked to appreciation. Kielbasa is a greasy little boo thang and so I warn you to be careful with this one. Decent flavor overall and a lovely snap on the skin, which is always a win in my book You can't really destroy eggs. I added some salt and pepper to mine and they were just fine but I can say that my French toast was nice and soft, with a hint of cinnamon lust sprinkled about and buttery. Add in some sweet syrup and your mouth is a happy one. The toast wasn't over cooked. Soft and crisp, buttered up; whereas all I added was some jelly for my belly and BOOM. Whatever toast heaven this was, I was in attendance for. My home fries were also soft and the potato was fresh. Again, not overcooked to the point of being dried out but checked and adored upon that grill. Nobody is to blame here for they were good. Hash Browns, though having a decent addition of onions and some green peppers just didn't do it for me overall. I could not put my finger on the overall flavor but it was enough for one and done fork full. All in all, my experience here was BETTER than last time. Excellent Job!! read more

Been a while since we have been to Kizl's because we were not happy with service quality but decided that today we would give it another try. We were pleasantly surprised. We walked in and were quickly seated. As soon as we were seated the staff approached with drink and food orders. I ordered one of the breakfast specials the huevos rancheros. It not only was picture perfect but also tasted amazing. Every ingredient tasted fresh and delicious. And when the bill came the next surprise was the reasonable pricing! Been back to Kizl's a handful of times and figured I'd give another update. Since my last review I've not had a good lunch or breakfast from there. The one lunch item I got from them was a roast beef grinder and the meat had already turned. Not what I would expect from a any restaurant. The quality control is severely lacking at Kizl's it would seem. The past few breakfast orders I've placed were lack luster. The omelets have always been mediocre. Even the corned beef hash today was just a salty, mushy mess. Home fires are just not good. Taste like they are boiled ahead a time. Frozen then thrown in the pan to brown. Very odd flavor today on them too. The toasts was nearly dripping with butter. French toast was just ok. I don't really know what's wrong with Kizl's but at this point I don't think I'll be going back. Not when there's other, better and more consistent places out there like Riverside Restaurant and the Hangry Fork just to name a couple. read more

Love this place to pieces! My boyfriend and have gone every Sunday for over a year now and always get great food, great service, and don't need to tell the servers what we want to order anymore they are so attentive to our usual. The owner is super kind and all the servers are amazing, including Ashley the server we are usually with, she does an amazing job every time we are there. Hello, Joe Turbo here. This family restaurant has been at this location for quite a while. I had been here years ago, met the owner/chef, who made pierogis every 2 weeks or so. If you were lucky you got an order. My brother (God Bless his soul) and I had stopped for breakfast. We talked to the owner (now retired) and he went to the kitchen and brought out a Polish Plate. (I don't think he even charged us for it!). Wonderful, like mom used to make. I had heard people from out of state would come here, but if Kizl's ran out of pierogis, they turned around and went home. Too bad they did not stop for the Philly steak grinder, which I have had many times. Always a tasty delight. Way reasonable priced and delicious. Our waitress may have been on something or super tired as it took a while to get our drink order and she seemed out of it. After placing our order we waited about 20-25 minutes for the food and still nothing. We decided it was best we leave and go somewhere else. We observed a gentleman come in way after we did, get his breakfast. Not sure what was going on as the hostess apologized as she thought we were already served. I am pleasantly surprised. I read the Yelp reviews and I was unsure if I was making a good decision. Really quaint and pretty restaurant. A lot of pop art displayed around the restaurant and the booths are shaped like seashells. I had the nicest waitress. She was very accommodating and super friendly. Everything was prompt and served with an upbeat attitude! Prices were super fair. Two breakfasts and two coffees came in just under $20. I would go as far to say that the prices are family friendly! I would think this place is a good option for people visiting Lake Compounce! I had the apple pancakes and Canadian bacon! Both were very enjoyable. First time there after passing it for years. Looked online and photos of inside looked like it was in decent shape for being there so long. We were seated and I proceeded to the ladies room and walked into a disgusting mess. The floor was covered in murky water leaking from the bottom of the toilet and there were dirty saturated paper towels surrounding the base. There was no toilet paper and when I went to wash my hands, there was no soap and no paper towels. The sign over the sink said staff must wash hands, but that would be without soap? I'm sure staff must use the bathroom at some point during the day and obviously don't have proper supplies to clean their hands and then they serve the customers? Back at the table, our sweet young waitress puts down our utensils wrapped and secured in a napkin. We open them and each knife from a separate bundle had food smeared on it. Out of two forks, there was one that had left over food stuck between the tines. I told the waitress about the bathroom and she said, "Oh, that always leaks like that", and then showed her the silverware and said we were leaving. She apologized, but of course, we told her it was not her fault. I'm wondering if there is a health inspector in Southington and why they would pass the restaurant with toilet water constantly flooding the bathroom floor, and people having to walk through it and not considering that a health hazard since, according to staff, it is a daily occurrence, and why the owners can't call a plumber and fix the issue. Shame on the owners and Health inspectors for not caring enough about the potential health hazards in that deplorable bathroom and not making sure their dinnerware is properly sanitized. I can't imagine what other hazards are lurking in that kitchen! read more

So our food is was great no complaints but we did order hash didn't come. We had to ask for it. Didn't receive any toast with my omelette even though I was asked what bread I wanted for my toast. Great family friendly place! The interior is a bit outdated but typical for a diner. The booths are big enough for car seats and for a good amount of people in them. The dessert case features huge, delicious looking pies and cakes topped with fresh fruit. Our waitress was so kind and understanding when it came to my wily toddler. The prices were fare for my two meals; $5.25 for a healthy tuna salad with a great house vinaigrette plus $3.75 for a 2 Egg Breakfast that my toddler loved. I will say that it's an abomination for any institution offering pancakes or French Toast NOT to have the option for real maple syrup. You can use butter and honey instead, but it isn't even close to a fair substitution. Seriously dudes: GET SOME REAL MAPLE SYRUP! The corned beef tastes better than it looks, which is like Spam squeezed out of a toothpaste container. Every time I pass by, this place is packed. My fiancé wanted something for breakfast, so we stopped in. There was a sign that said to wait to be seated but the hostess pointed to a booth in the back or told me I could sit anywhere on the other side. What's the point of having a hostess if they don't even walk you to your table? The prices are fairly low and that's certainly for a reason. The rye toast wasn't very good, a very mediocre and bland rye bread. The home fries were beyond bland and under seasoned. Service was also very lacking.. I want to like this place. Its got the right resume, serves the right stuff, and several of the people are the right people. There's a woman behind the counter, dark brown short hair, who has always done the right thing by me. When she's seen me standing for too long, asks, and finishes any order that's been sitting, waiting to be finished by the one taking the order. And, that's the problem. There's another woman in the take out area who constantly takes my order, then leaves me hanging. I'm a contractor. Time is money. I get take out 'cause I don't have time to sit there. I enjoy some of the stuff they serve, and I like diners. But, she takes my order, and... then forgets me. The woman w/ dark short hair always finishes things. My contact at my contracting company took me here for the first couple times we met, sat in the restaurant area. He grew up in Bristol, and he's fine w/ the place. And, as mentioned, its convenient. Hey, its right across the street from work; must be quick, right? Well, 40 minutes into sitting there, the server told us they were out of what I'd ordered. Straw... that... broke... camel's... back. Most recently, we went to "Smokin' w/ Chris." Its farther, but... its the right thing. Fast service, great food, great service, and much better ambiance. We'll trek the extra mile or three. And, I'll still be back at or about the same time it takes to go to Kizl's. read more

One of the most-descriptive Yelp reviews I could find for this place said that the food "arrived at their table piping-hot". I couldn't agree more. This place seems to be largely unchanged (except for their # of tables) since the 50s. There was a unique mismash of polish, italian, and american offerings on the menu. If you come looking for large servings of comfort/diner food you will not be disappointed. There will be no garnishes or nuanced flavors, but sometimes you just need things to stick to your ribs. read more

I'm giving 2 stars because the waitress was very nice and understanding. Whenever I go to a new breakfast place, I order corned beef hash and eggs over easy but I didn't order that at Kizl's because their hash has green peppers in it. I've eaten lots of hash at lots of places and never have I seen green peppers in hash...ew. So I opted for their Eggs Benedict. It was bland. The sauce should have been Hollandaise but it was white and more like a gravy you'd find with sausage and biscuits, very floury tasting and the sauce was thick and congealed. The eggs were poached good but the English muffin was rubbery and hard to cut and chew. The homefries were deep fried and crispy and honestly, the only good thing on the table. My husband ordered Texas French Toast. First, there was nothing Texas about this French toast. They were slices of regular bread. His French toast LOOKED cooked, had a nice grill color, but the middle of each piece was raw. Like, completely raw with beaten egg mixture. My husband NEVER complains so when he does, it's legit. We alerted the waitress and her response was "I hate it when the cook does this!" Ok, so obviously it's a common occurrence. The plate was sent back and took at least 20 minutes to get a new one. Guess what???? Yup, you guessed it....still raw. Actually worse than the first plate. It was suggested to my husband to eat around that raw, to eat the more well cooked edges but my husband said no, he'll just eat the sausage. The waitress was nice and took the meal off the bill. I never really travel this way for breakfast, but went w/ some friends who live in Southington. Kizl's is an interesting place. As soon as I walked in, the lady just pointed to a booth and said- go ahead.. OK don't mind if I do? LOL- The selection is great, and this is just a standard diner type place. Greasy spoon for sure. I was talking to my mom on the phone today, reminiscing about the long drives my family would take to bring me to and home from college. Bristol, CT was approximately the halfway point, and inevitably the point in the trip when my parents and I were restless and eager to get out of the car. On one of the first trips, we decided to venture off the highway in search of a restaurant where we could go stretch out for a bit and get some coffee and non-fast food cuisine. We stumbled upon Kizl's Family Restaurant, and we enjoyed such a lovely late lunch. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a self-proclaimed chicken salad aficionado, and theirs was really good. The servers were friendly, it was clean, food was fresh, and coffee was strong. Needless to say, on the next trip, as we passed a sign for Bristol, someone suggested, "Hey, remember that place Kizl's? Let's see if we can find it again." This happened again and again, and even on a couple of non-related trips in which we had to drive out of our way. There was just something about this place!
