Ever seen Once Upon a Time in Mexico? Remember the part where Depp is talking about the pork being too good and therefore having to kill the cook to maintain the balance? That's sort of how I feel about this place. During my first trip I got the bacon cheeseburger with light mayo and mustard. Bacon was crisp, m and m were kept to a minimum, burger was pink in the muddle and the bun was nice and toasty Second trip I ordered steak and fries. Two patties with grilled onions and jalapeños and smothered in cheese with a side of fries. Right amount of spice with the peppers added a bit if seasoned salt and got damn. I fully understand Depp's need to shoot the cook to maintain the balance. This will be one of my regular stops when working in Amarillo. Btw, the comment about shooting the cook was in jest. Last minute craving for a burger led me and some friends to Blue Sky on Thursday night. The place was PACKED. I couldn't believe how crowded it was for a Thursday. We could barely get through the front doors and even when we did, we needed to walk around and find the end of the ordering line. Try to grab one of their menus while you wait so you're not the n00b who's at the front and has no idea what to order. After about 20 minutes or so, we finally made our way to the cashier. Whew. I ordered the Double Burger ($6), which is exactly what it sounds like - two patties of 100% ground chuck that's fresh and hand formed. All of their burgers come with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions. It's YOUR job to tell the cashier if you don't want something on your burger and whether or not you'd like to add grilled onions, jalapenos, or green chile. My perfect burger had no mustard or onions, but I added some grilled jalapenos. They mince a couple of jalapeno peppers up and then throw them on the grill for a while. It makes the flavor of the pepper less spicy and more.. smokey. The burger was downright delicious. They use bread that's specifically baked every morning for the restaurant and its an excellent addition to the burger. I also ordered a large order of their freshly-cut french fries ($2.39). These are Idaho #1 potatoes that are cut right there in the restaurant. They were really tasty, but were SUPER greasy and not cooked the way I like. You can tell when french fries are not fried in hot enough oil. They come out really limp and soggy. These were basically a heap of soggy, oil-soaked french fries. Tasty, but I felt really gross eating them. My wife ordered the hand-battered onion rings ($2) and these were even more disappointing. They were not so much "rings" as they were.. onion shavings. Tiny, thin "shoestrings" of onions that are covered in batter and deep fried. I didn't like them at all. It was more like you were eating a pile of batter that had a little onion in it. Ew. Give me REAL onion rings, the thicker the onion the better! All in all, this place is a burger destination in Amarillo for me. I just wished the french fries were crispier and the onion rings were actually onion rings. I had the green Chile burger and hubby had the bacon cheeseburger. Kids had a hotdog and grilled cheese sandwich meal. The fries were hand cut with skin on which we all were not a fan of. With all the reviews of needing to try this place, we gave in because if you've never been to Amarillo, there's not much within hotel distance but the common fast food places, which all pretty much have 1 or 1 1/2 stars. (McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Braum's, Sonic, Whataburger). We didn't eat at any of those either. For $47.00, I was only impressed w/the burger I ordered. I noticed a review on here from someone saying that the burgers and fries were small!? Um, not in my opinion or my husbands and the mini burgers we ordered for our kids were perfect size. I actually wish we wouldn't have ordered the 3 shakes, I've had better at Sonic. Would have been more satisfied w/some ice water or something from our hotel instead. Fries were nothing to rave about and one large order would be suffice for 2, or in our case, probably our fam of 5. I literally ended up throwing away a whole order of fries and more than one full shake. My hubbs said only one person was working the register while seeing about 15 people handling the food. He also said the woman at the register wasn't helpful when he was trying to decide what to order so I would suggest figuring it all out before you go if you are visiting from out of town. read more

I try to look for unique and tasty places to eat when I'm on the road, and Blue Sky fit the bill beautifully! As others have mentioned, you place an order, you get a number, then you grab your food - it's very similar to Five Guys and similar burger shops, but the quality of burger is, I think, a notch higher. (After all, if there's one thing you can get in Texas, it's good beef!) I agree that the green chile burger is excellent, but I was a little disappointed to find the chile sauce served on the side instead of on the burger directly. On the one hand, it mean the bun was a little firmer. On the other, the flavor didn't quite blend in. I also really enjoyed the side order of fried jalapenos - if you are in the mood for some fire eating, these are a great side! I went with a shake to finish out the meal - thick, rich, and so firm that you almost need a bubble tea style straw to really get a handle on these monsters. We recently drove through Amarillo on a road trip, and grabbed some Blue Sky for lunch. We called in the order (quoted 10-15 minutes) and it was ready when we got there. [They have a drive-thru window, but from what I could tell, it's only for orders that were called in - you can't just drive up and order on the spot.] Hubby and I both got cheeseburgers. He got a chili cheeseburger and the chili was in a separate container, so he had to add it himself, which was actually smart so it didn't get soggy and he could control the amount. I got a bacon cheeseburger with added jalapenos, which were also in a separate container. Both of us agreed that the burgers were really good and we'd order them again. We also ordered a 1/2 and 1/2 order of fries and onion rings. The fries were limp and greasy. The onion rings had a great batter on them, but they were more like shoestrings than rings. They were also on the heavy/greasy side. Not that I wouldn't order them again... Overall we had a good experience here and will stop again next time we're in Amarillo. read more

This was an interesting place to eat. I ordered ham and cheese bekah ordered the chicken sandwich both were really good and Too big to finish. We also shared fried mushrooms we loved them so good! I would suggest sharing if possible. The best part of this meal was the Coconut Tea. Never had it until now. My daughter and I loved it! This was a delicious spot for a burger while traveling through from NM to OK. Conveniently located off the interstate, I was happy to find a local spot to have a meal that was easy to get to. They were super busy during lunch on a Monday, and I could tell lots of locals come here regularly. There was a line that moved quickly. I like how easily you can customize your order. Even picky burger eaters will love this place! The burgers are juicy, fresh, and full of flavor. The buns practically melt in your mouth. We stopped in here while driving through Amarillo on a long road trip and were so glad we did! Their burgers are not your typical quick food burger. As in I would go out of my way to eat here and will plan to stop in Amarillo for sure on our next road trip. Delicious!! I found this place on Yelp and could not wait to try the jalapeno rings! I would have given this place 3.5 stars if I could. I ate here at about 3pm in the afternoon and so it was pretty quiet. I placed my order, green chile cheeseburger and jalapeno rings at the counter. I am very glad I got the half order or rings - I think that even 4 people would struggle to eat a whole order based on what I got! The food was ready pretty quickly (you look for your number to appear on a screen) and was very hot & fresh. The rings were very good, crunchy, pretty spicy and a decent ranch dipping sauce. The burger was decent, just nothing special honestly - if you have ever eaten at Blake's Lotaburger in NM then it was like that - they serve their green chile in a cup on the side of the tray and it is almost a sauce, it was very flavorful and it wasn't an issue to spoon some of the chile onto each bite of my burger. The prices were reasonable and I would for sure stop by next time I am in Amarillo or Lubbock. read more

To be clear, this review is from a vegetarian stranded in cattle country! Was perusing Yelp reviews trying to decide where to have dinner. Instead of a link to their menu, there were (tiny) photos of the menu that were impossible to read on my phone. So I called and asked if they had veggie burgers and was told yes, they did. Upon arrival, I couldn't find evidence of any veggie burgers. Turns out they serve a bun with all the condiments and call it a veggie burger! This reminded me of being in high school and going to Burger King and ordering a Whopper, hold the meat (but I was joking!) oh well, the sweet potato fries were tasty and there is a decent selection of bottled beers. Fantastic burger joint. Simple and delicious. My wife and I got the bacon cheese burger with green chillies, very tasty. The kiddo got 2 mini cheese burgers and fries, way worth the $4.99. Their burgers do come pink in the middle which is great for us. Fries and onion rings basket was great too. Only negative was the sweet potato fries needed salt, but that's okay the burgers more than made up for it. I wish it wasn't only in Armarillo, moving to Dallas, TX, I would love to have a local joint that I could go once a week and know it is going to be amazing. Recommend the call ahead and to go option. Fantastic place with excellent service, tasty food and a great friendly, local-feel atmosphere. You got to know something about me before reading this review, I like my burgers plain and dry. I only eat them with cheese (American) and ketchup, so I base the burger off of that and nothing else. The burger was overall decent, a little overcooked for my taste, but nothing that would prevent me from going here again. I enjoyed their onion rings, my favorite kind. The long crispy kind that has more breading than onion on it! Other than that the atmosphere was family orientated, a long line that seemed to grow as the night wore on and it was loud. I had the fried jalapeños as my side and they were excellent. We had a big group - hockey team and we were able to get in out fairly quickly.
