Very busy spot so prepare to wait, but the food and drinks come out fairly quick. Not good for big groups, all little tables, except for one inside. Don't recommend the coffee or at least the banana latte. Matcha was decent. The Cali burrito and the pastor tacos were great! Ube pancakes were good too, not too sweet. Also shoutout to the food runner this morning, she was working hard.
Great local. Nice little place. Reasonable prices. Good food (not excellent). The blasting music was annoying - way too loud. Probably won't go back, but it is worth trying
Visiting San Diego for the weekend and saw this place trending on social media, so we had to try it! We were short on time and the restaurant was busy, so we ordered ahead through DoorDash. I can't speak much on the service, but the space itself is super cute and I'd definitely come back to dine in. My partner and I got Iced Vanilla Lattes with oat milk and Vanilla Cloud, plus the Big Wave Burrito with turkey bacon. The burrito was good, but for the price, I felt the portion and flavor were a little underwhelming. Adding the chipotle aioli definitely helped! The latte was really good, a bit on the sweeter and milkier side, but still very flavorful and rich. Overall, it's a little pricey and parking is tight, but we also visited around 10 AM on a Saturday during peak brunch time. I'd come back to try more of the menu, especially their matcha!
I'm back!! They changed up their interior look and its so cute. I got the same cali burrito and it was delicious and not too heavy. I paired that with their banana matcha which was okay, like a 6/10 felt too milky. The seating here is always rough at around noon. But we walked by again around 2 ish and it was less crowded. A staple if you're near the area!
The place is very beautiful, I love the wooden seating to the side as well as the surf vibe inside and the umbrella seating outside. I got their special, which was the s'mores latte and the marshmallows were great- it wasn't super sweet so add sugar if you like that and it had a hint of coconut overall great I didn't feel sick after drinking either Service and staff were super nice
Cute aesthetic inside and outside. Food was just your typical breakfast, nothing crazy but solid and reliable. Line can get pretty long on weekends and tables are first come first serve. Food takes some time to come out. Lots of younger crowd here, good for girls brunch! Matcha wasn't very strong, would get coffee instead
Teen picked this place off of Instagram. Drove down from LA and found a line but luckily it moved fairly fast! Got the ube pancakes which were very good but the standout here are the breakfast burritos perhaps, the best one we've had and we've had a lot. Great coffees and drinks too. Really busy but managed to find a table at the last minute.
I found Blue Whale on TikTok and was really excited to try it, but unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype. The food was good, but the service and overall experience were disappointing. They seem to have gotten a lot busier from all the social media attention, but they really need a better system for handling large crowds. There was a long line, no clear directions on where to stand, and employees were repeatedly yelling at everyone to line up "along the ramp" even though there wasn't any obvious ramp or signage. If it's your first time visiting, it's incredibly confusing. It's also a first come, seat yourself setup. We ordered our food only to realize there wasn't a single table available, so we were left standing around waiting for somewhere to sit. It would've been nice if that had been explained before ordering. The girl who took our order was especially rude and showed zero hospitality, which set the tone for the rest of the visit. Between the confusing process, lack of organization, and unfriendly service, it just wasn't an enjoyable experience. The food was decent, but not enough to make up for everything else. Next time, I'll just go across the street to the other brunch spot instead.
My family was spending the weekend in La Jolla Shores, and I wanted to go to Shell Beach to see the tide pools. Low tide was early in the morning, so I wanted to get some breakfast first. A photo of the Ube pancakes at Blue Whale popped up on Yelp and I had to try them. First of all, Ube is the food of my people. My parents would often bring back a jar of Ube from some monastery in the Philippines. Plain Ube is pretty tasty in itself. It's funny and good to see it in different forms now. My next favorite might be Ube ice cream, and then an Ube cheesecake I had. These Ube pancakes were good, but maybe a little too sweet with the amount of syrup they put on it. If you've ever had an Ube donut, it kind of tasted like that with some syrup on top. Would I get it again? Yes, but maybe a healthy dollop of whip cream instead.
There is a bit of a line and there is a good amount of seating but it goes pretty fast so if you really wanna sit down, just keep an eye out and take a table as fast as you can but the decor is cute inside good vibes. The people behind the counter were very helpful. Very nice. It was good. I got the best coffee I've ever had in my life here. I didn't even take a picture of it. I drink it so fast. It was a Hawaii honey latte with walnut milk. It was so good. I have no words I want to come back just for this and I would come back 100 times for it. The breakfast was OK. I'm not big on breakfast. Nothing bad with it. Nothing great about it but come for the coffee. Trust me.
So glad we stopped by here. The food was delicious and came out quickly! So quickly, the seagulls grabbed themselves a slice as soon as the box touched the table (make sure to protect your food ). There was a pretty long line, and it was definitely hot inside, but the wait was worth it! The coffee was excellent--probably one of the highlights--and everything we ordered tasted incredibly fresh and flavorful. The ingredients felt high quality, and the food was simple but really well done. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, so you can sit outside if you prefer some fresh air. The inside was quite warm when we visited, so keep that in mind. Despite the heat and the wait, I'd definitely come back for the great coffee and fresh, delicious brunch!

We stopped by this place for a quick breakfast. This place has a very casual, coastal charm where customers can just walk in and place their orders before finding themselves their own seat. The area can get a little cramped, making it harder for larger parties, but I found it to be a wonderful stop for a smaller party of 2-3. They offered a seasonal strawberry matcha, which I really enjoyed! We also ordered their ube pancakes and big wave breakfast burrito, which was the perfect amount to share. All in all, I really enjoyed this place and would love to return to try their other menu items. read more
Such a cute beach brunch spot! What we ordered: * ube pancakes * morning sando * big wave burrito * breakfast bowl (farro, arugula, mushroom, hummus, goat cheese, egg) * Christmas in Hawaii (macadamia coconut latte special) * the Grinch (matcha w/espresso special) The morning sando was so good and such a satisfying, savory breakfast choice. I loved the hash brown that it came with! Ube pancakes were good, but i really wish the ube flavor came through a little more. Vibes here were so cute, and it wasn't too difficult finding seating after ordering at the counter. Super cute spot, definitely will come back for some build your own acai bowls! read more

YUMMM everything I wanted in a breakfast sandwich. The sourdough bread was so perfect and the eggs were perfectly cooked. The hashbrown on the side was a little random, but delicious! I just wish it came with a sauce to dip it in, but maybe I should've asked. Will def come back. read more
I was really excited to try the ube pancakes but unfortunately was not really able to taste the ube. They prepared it with too much syrup so it was soggy to eat. The inside was really nice and well decorated. I wouldn't recommend going during busy hours bc there's not too much seating. I was only able to sit in the barstools with a very small eating space (it was probably just meant for casual goers with drinks and not full meals). read more
I went to Blue Whale this afternoon. We ordered the strawberry matcha latte & Açaí bowl. The açaí bowl was a standard açaí bowl - very sweet but good. The strawberry matcha needs some work - it was light on the strawberry & the matcha tasted really watered down. The place itself is cute but for the price & quality of items, this self serve experience didn't hit. The experience with the staff wasn't terrible but wasn't good either. was craving a lobster roll one day when i was near the beach & i found this place & called in to place a to go order! i got the lobster roll which was more so a sandwich, but it was FILLED with lobster & it was served with fries, but i was not expecting an entire other box STUFFED with fries! for under $25 this was so worth the money & filled me up read more
This was an undeniably adorable store with pretty solid food. I visited on a Saturday afternoon, and it was packed. I ordered before finding a seat. Since the inside was so crowded, I snagged an outdoor table after a long wait. Since the restaurant was bustling, there was quite a wait for the food. I was so excited to order the Ube pancakes, but it was already sold out at noon. I ended up getting the Big Wave Burrito and the Classic French Toast. Both dishes were good, especially the French toast. The brioche used was fluffy and light. The raspberry compote tasted fresh, and the dollop of whipped cream was a great pairing. The burrito was unremarkable but solid. Both dishes were smaller than expected. I wish the serving sizes were bigger, especially since the burrito was $15. The service was understandably slow since there was such a long line. I hope to come back to try the Ube pancakes, and overall it was a good brunch. read more

I feel like this place started off small and grew exponentially in popularity and need to make accommodations to reflect that. It would help to have a server/hostess help with seating because it's quite difficult to find once you order. People who hadn't ordered yet would "reserve" tables by putting their bags on it which I don't think should be allowed. The food is just fine, I got the breakfast bowl and just felt like I was expecting more. It just felt like some random ingredients thrown together, especially the plain arugula. read more

We went to Blue Whale for the first time this morning for a Friday brunch date after I saw it on Instagram. Cute but very small cafe with only a single stall bathroom inside. It's definitely a more casual beach cafe that's maybe meant more for a quick bite / to-go orders because there isn't a lot of seating inside or outside. Luckily, I grabbed a table as soon as someone left. I saw a lot of people standing around outside waiting for a table because there were several customers on their laptops with just a coffee, taking up the tables with several unused chairs. I counted 4 separate tables near us with just one person sitting at each of them, not actively eating or anything. I'm all for doing work at a cafe, but I always think it's rude when customers sit there for a long period of time (not even sipping on their coffee anymore but just using it as a token to stay at their table) to do work while there's a growing line of people actually trying to sit & eat the food they just got. Perhaps a Starbucks or a larger cafe with a designated work area is better suited for that. I did overhear one of the employees ask one of the girls to move / give up some of the chairs much later to allow others to sit, but they may need a better system for enforcing this especially on busy weekends. You order and pay in advance at the counter, so you'll just have to base your tip based on that short ordering experience. They bring your food to the table, but we didn't receive extra service like bringing water to our table or asking if we need any condiments. If you want water, then I suggest asking for it with your drink / food order. Our table outside also wasn't wiped down after the last person before us used it. Onto the food! I ordered the Ube pancakes, and my husband got the morning sando. Both were delicious, but my pancakes got too sweet for me after eating half (gave the rest to my husband). Decent cafe as long as you can snag a table. I've been to the other two popular cafes (next door and across the street) this month, and I think I prefer those due to the full service & more seating (even on busy days). read more

Been here to try but closed on New Year's Day, so we went to here again the other day and it was such a memorable experience. When the Seared Ahi came out, I was surprised by the visuals, quality, and taste. The tuna was fresh and cooked nicely, the veggies that came together were so good. I honestly didn't really expect that grade of food quality bc I thought it would just be like a cafe breakfast. But all the dishes we got were amazing. read more
Went for brunch and it was amazing!! The breakfast burrito was the best one I've ever had. It had a crispy hash brown inside, soo much avocado, and came with a fresh salsa on the side that made it even better. I also got an iced gingerbread latte with oat milk and loved it as well. This eatery kept popping up every time I opened Yelp the past 5 days since I'm visiting in San Diego. The photos and reviews were great for a day after Thanksgiving meal. The block it's located in has many places also packed with customers in La Jolla, an upscale neighborhood. We ate outside on a table on the sidewalk with many others. The unique offerings were hard to resist. We both had tres leches lattes. Doc had a lobster roll and I had a Thai steak. Both of ours came with the crispiest of fries. Mine had a savory green sauce on it with something like furikake on it and delicate leafy greens as garnish. The workers kept checking on us with genuine smiles. They were happy to hear our meals were excellent. read more

The aesthetic and plating of the food made this restaurant look really appealing, but overall, the experience was just alright for me. First off, the order first then find a seat system is pretty inefficient, especially at a small restaurant, on a busy afternoon. What if you order, and there's no seat available by the time your food is ready lol... not ideal. For our meal, we got the Breakfast Bowl, Crying Tiger, Kyoto Matcha, and Mango Tajin Smoothie. Right off the bat, I'd say this is not the place for Asian fusion cuisine. I expected something unique, but honestly, they should just stick to American brunch food. The Kyoto Matcha was so disappointing. They really threw a Japanese word in there to make it sound authentic, but it was the most watered-down matcha ever. I'll attach a photo of the matcha lattes at the counter because... why are they all the same drink but different shades? And you can literally see the grainy texture--I'd rather get matcha from Starbucks. BUT they were kind enough to make me a different drink upon request, so I got the Tulum Tropical instead--and it was so much better. The Mango Tajin Smoothie was also delicious. The Breakfast Bowl was okay. The ingredients sounded good, but after eating the egg and two oyster mushrooms, I was basically left with a bowl of farro. It definitely could've used more protein. Luckily we had the Crying Tiger, and we ended up combining the two dishes for a better flavor experience. On its own, the ribeye was tender, and the aioli paired well with the fries. Overall, it was an okay spot. I think their acai bowls would probably be a hit since the smoothies were great, but for breakfast or lunch? I'd go somewhere else. read more

What I ordered | Crying Tiger Ribeye + Kyoto Matcha Latte with Oat Milk Taste | the ribeye had a flavorful nam jim jaew sauce. and they ask you how you would like the meat cooked. the fries had this green cilantro sauce with a little kick. also great flavor. the kyoto matcha got a bit overpowered by the oat milk to me and its not sweetened. probably good to ask if they have any syrups or sweeteners. Service | our server who took our order was very nice and also gave me a cup of water without the lemon/lime infused for my dog. the folks bringing out the food were also friendly Parking | Street Notes | dog friendly! you order first then find a seat. they have indoor and outdoor seating. have breakfast and lunch options. need to come back here! cute spot for brunch! read more

I get it, it's a trendy spot with a cute atmosphere and cute staff. But let's get down to the nitty gritty-The service was okay. Our table had not been wiped down before we sat down. The food was only decent. My ube pancakes were dry as heck and they didn't even sprinkle them with powdered sugar to look pretty and cover up that borderline burnt look and taste they had. The vanilla chai honestly tasted like a glass of milk, sprinkled with cinnamon, and according to my friend-the breakfast sandwich was "very mid". Parking isn't a big issue because there's always something even if it's down the street. But yeah, I probably wouldn't come back. read more
A converted house in the village of La Jolla used to be the home of a national juice bar chain. Blue Whale has now taken over the space as a cafe that is open from 8 am to 6 pm. Seating was limited to about 15 customers inside while there were a few round top tables set up on the sidewalk in front of the structure. The two-page menu contained offerings such as breakfast fare (e.g. pancakes, chicken and waffles), toasts, smoothies, superfood bowls, salad, protein bowls, and lunch/dinner entrees. One item drew my attention because it was unexpected. That was the Crying Tiger Ribeye. While it's normal to see it served at a Thai cuisine eatery, I never imagined this cafe's kitchen would have it on the menu. A plate full of charcoal grilled ribeye slices were cooked medium rare to my preference. They were served with nam jim jaew which was a sweet and sour chili dipping sauce and garnished with cilantro on top. A side of french fries covered in pesto(?) was provided in a bowl. The fries were the shoestring type and very crispy. The amount of meat was plenty, however several pieces were undercooked, especially those near the end of the cut. If given the choice, then I would have substituted white rice as a starch instead of having french fries. The staff was really friendly despite looking stressed from the backlog of orders from the volume of customers. Blue Whale is located close to a couple of well-known brunch spots so if those places have too long of a wait, then this cafe is a solid backup plan. read more

Small spot in La Jolla with a really cozy and aesthetic look. We came for brunch but were a bit too late (past 3 PM). The food was a bit pricey but absolutely delicious. I ended up getting the Ahi Poke Bowl, which came with sesame rice crackers unique to this spot, with a yummy wasabi/ginger-ish flavor to the dish. I also tried the Cali Burrito, which was packed with juicy steak and the aji verde crema was addicting. Definitely will be returning to try brunch here! read more

I've been craving Ube Pancakes for brunch, so for my birthday celebration, my husband took me to The Blue Whale in La Jolla. Let me just say, this place was amazing and far exceeded my expectations! The restaurant has a charming coastal vibe--quaint, cozy, and homey inside, with a great option for outdoor seating too. It's the perfect setting for a relaxing brunch. We ordered a variety of dishes to share: the Ube Pancakes (so delicious), an acai bowl (requested without hemp seeds), avocado toast, the Blue Whale Brekky, and a matcha latte for me. Everything was so good, but the Ube Pancakes were by far my favorite--they were fluffy, flavorful, and just perfect. This birthday brunch was exactly what I hoped for, and The Blue Whale has officially become one of my favorite brunch spots. I can't wait to come back. The food, the atmosphere, and the overall experience were all just incredible. read more

I saw them on IG and that's how I learned about them! I was down in La Jolla Cove and decided to stop by knowing they just opened up. Since I had a picnic already I wasn't hungry for food. I was feeling hot so I decided to get the iced tres leches latte. (With 2% milk). I don't know where I went wrong, it sounded really promising. This latte was 50% tres leches syrup and then the milk -- not particularly "curdled" per say but it separated in the drink. Kind of like when you get almond milk in your latte? I'm pretty disappointed and I could have mentioned it to them, but I really don't like being that kind of person especially since they were pretty busy! The workers were really nice and the owner I believe was running around helping out. It was lovely to see an owner pitch in with the business. The theme of the place was really cute & I loved the little lantern tea lights on the table. They had a good amount of seats inside. Two tables for 2 people seating. And the other tables were for 4 people. This would be a great spot for groups! Also, they had several tables outside! I saw a few people on their computer, but personally I wouldn't want to see this place turn into a spot where people are on their computers for hours with their notes spread out on the table. I liked that they offered water that's infused with lemon and lime I think? It had ice in it too, which is crucial for yummy tasting water. In addition to coffee & tea, they have açaí bowls, salads, burritos, hamburger, chicken, pastries, smoothies, toasts, etc! So, I wouldn't go back for the coffee but I'd definitely come back and try out of the other items out from the extensive menu. This place is ok. The place is very small so seating is limited inside and outside. You order at the counter, you get a number and then you find your own seating. The place is best for small groups of 2-3 people due to the limitations. I recommend sunblock and a hat just in case you sit outside because shade is also limited. We ordered the Acai bowl and ube pancakes. The Acai bowl was good. The ube pancakes were good but wouldn't order again because it was a bit on the dry side. The pancakes took awhile to come out. My partner was almost finished with his bowl by the time my pancakes arrived. The utensils were also interesting.... they were a weird shape and very scratched up looking. Loved every single thing! The vibe is everything, the food was so fresh and delicious and the matcha was so good that the next morning I walked across the street after dining somewhere else to get another one!! My daughter and I stopped here during one of her flag football tournaments and she even said it was the best food we had the entire trip! The service was awesome! Took my friends who were visiting here and it did not disappoint! The guy who helped us in the front was super awesome and subbed the fries for salad and also recommended the matcha with a little bit of coconut and macadamia nut syrup and OMG it was amazing! Definitely going to be back to work and grab a bite. read more

A cute little spot- the breakfast burrito was delicious however the Ube Pancakes were horrible. I appreciate that they are gluten free however they completely crumble(very dry and needs xantham gum or something) when trying to eat them in addition the flavor is off. The coconut whipped cream on top was delicious and they looked beautiful though. read more

I got the burrito and it's fire def beach town vibe I honestly forgot which latte I got but it's so good(prob the lavender one). it's pretty packed tho and it's a little bit on the pricey side (for a college student) but expected for La Jolla.Also, the ppl who work there were super nice. Food and ambience is nice. Walk in, grab your own table and order up at the counter. This place gets pretty busy during brunch hours on weekends so plan accordingly. We tried the lobster roll, chicken & waffles, cali burrito, and the lox toast, food was good, the matcha was meh. read more
Love this new cafe! Blue Whale is a great place for brunch, lunch, a quick snack, or just stopping by for coffee. Located in La Jolla. The vibe is very coastal chill, which fits the location well! There's a good amount of street parking and some spots right in from of the cafe. Very dog friendly and the staff are amazing! So accommodating and friendly. Ube Pancakes - Flavor of the pancakes was great, although the texture was a tad dry. The whipped cream was divine and the fruit and coconut were a great addition! Chicken Teriyaki Bowl - This was a bowl with rice, roasted broccolini, avocado, some furifake, and we added the marinated chicken! I believe base price for this bowl is $11 and the addition of chicken was $6, which is a bit steep. Flavors were great though and really enjoyed it! Crying Tiger Ribeye - A well cooked steak with crispy fries! The aioli on the fries was nice and creamy. The steak didn't have much sauce at all so I'm not sure if that's how it is or if sauce was missing. Nonetheless, a delicious steak and fries combo! Build Your Own Bowl (not pictured) - Tried the mango, coconut, and passion fruit bases and they were delicious! Loaded with fruit and granola, the bowl was great! I got the small bowl which was $12. Drinks: Tres Leches Latte and Kyoto Matcha - The latte was delicious! Note that the matcha latte does not come sweetened! It's pure matcha and milk so make adjustments if needed. :) A true gem in La Jolla! Will be back for their açaí bowls and lattes and to try their other food items. Delicious food and warm services! On my recent trip to La Jolla, I made it my goal to sample wonderful restaurants the region has to offer. This restaurant came up very highly rated in Yelp, and I decided to give it a try. Located in the popular hotel/dining district in La Jolla, this cute little restaurant appears to be family owned. There are sitting areas both indoor and outdoor, and the ambiance feels cozy and intimate. For breakfast, I had the Blue Whale brekkie. It came with scrambled eggs, toast, hashbrown, avocados, and sautéed veggies. I loved the assorted varieties on the breakfast plate, and the presentation was beautiful! As for cost, most of the breakfast items are very reasonable. Customers place their orders at the counter, and they can pick up water and use sils on the side. The servers will bring out your food to your table when ready. Overall, we had a wonderful breakfast at Blue Whale. We felt the wait time was a little long, but the food was worth the wait. read more
